Today we will look at Dragon 6578 -- StuG III Ausf.G May 1943 Production mit Schurzen. This kit builds up an excellent Kursk-era Sturmgeschutz. In this video I will point out any issues I encountered with the instructions, fitment of the parts, level of detail, and also historical accuracy of the vehicle.

DISCLAIMER: I am not paid to promote any specific products or brands; I just use the products I find work best for me through my experiences. There is no reason for me to promote a bad product, as then I would not enjoy using it, not like the result on my model, and not be proud of publicizing it in a video. There's also no point in me doing this to keep up relations with a company if the only benefit would be getting more of the same products that I didn't like. I have not used every product out there, but from what I have used, I keep using the products I like, and that's why I use them in my videos. You can use whatever other products you would like to and you can feel that they are better - that is your opinion, and is perfectly fine by me, thus I hope that feeling is reciprocated.

A couple of comments. 1) We must remember, that even if a new feature was introduced in month X, it does not mean that the whole fleet changed over night. First the old parts were used up. Our Finnish Alkett StuGs from May and June 1943 still had the plain pipe fendersupports and the rotating cupola with the plated-over part to the front. So, boys and girls, stop looking at your books, and start looking at your StuGs... Reference pictures rules! 2) Dragon offers a somewhat incorrect rear interlocked plate (shocker!). The edges are not square, but heavily slanted. The build itself is very nice of this kit (that I myself rejected as too inaccurate for out of the box building...) :)
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 2 года назад
Yes, that is true with the fender supports. Maybe I wasn't clear but I mentioned that you might as well use these new parts in the kit because they're cool. But the older parts G33 can also be used for sure, since most features were introduced "transitionally". And I know what you mean about the rear hull interlocking edges being a little too square in the kit.

@@Panzermeister36 First of all ... Sorry for my bad english. I'm Swiss. I agree with the comments from Andreas Lärka. When ever a change startet in the building factory's it took some time until the complete production was "clean". For examples the strait welded Engine Deck/ interlocked Engine Deck: Alkett : until June 43 / from Mai 43 Miag : until June 43 / from March 43 or in your words, the small accsess hatch ( circular hatch for draining engine coolant): Alkett with hatch until June 43 Alkett pluged an welded until June 43 Alkett with out hatch from March 43 Miag with hatch until July 43 Miag with out hatch from July 43 The same with the small trailer towing pintle: It depends if you are building a StuG from Alkett or Miag. And if Miag, what type of StuG from Miag. Because the Miag StuG's based on the MAN Fgst. had a small towing pintle. But not a pivoting one. So far you are absolutely correct because your build represents a Alkett StuG. Form of Fender Support Brackts : Pressed Steel Fender support brackets = Alkett Tubular reinforced with triangular steel support = Miag And there are many other small details to look on, depending on what factory had build the StuG you want to build ;-) All in all you did a very good review to point out the main points and you sayed nothing wrong. But you simplified things and i think that is absolut OK. Most modellers will build the Kit more or less out of the box and to be honest, every body will see then a StuG III Ausf. G in a early version. And for the most people/modellers this is enough. Because the enjoy the build, painting and weathering process. Excessive rivet counting is only a minority. With that in mind.... happy modelling and i'm looking forward to your next video ;-)

Are you Mr. Zimmermann from the Müller and Zimmermann Sturmgeschütz Vol.1 and 2 books? If so, I am a big fan of those books; they have been very informative for my interest in this vehicle. Thank you for your comment! Yes, my comments are to build an "idealized" version of the vehicle. As you know, hybrids and transitional vehicles are common during the introduction of every new feature, so not all the new details and changes I pointed out with this kit for the May 1943 version are required to make it "historically correct". There is always some wiggle room. Again, thank you for your comments. I have pinned these at the top of the video so others can be informed by you and Mr. Lärka.

Only reason I watched this video is because I'm a fan/subscriber of Panzermeister's work. His knowledge of tanks in general is helpful and I appreciate his opinion. Dragon's customer support is one of the worst I have experienced! (Kit # 6365) That was 6 years ago and I have not supported Dragon ever since. Their loss.
@DieselxRobot
@DieselxRobot 2 года назад
I haven't heard much of Dragon in recent years. When I first started modeling around 8 years ago they were pretty much the biggest name in high detail armor kits. Now I feel like there are a lot more companies that have taken over in that area.
@TheRustyrambo
@TheRustyrambo 2 года назад
They are still the best in Tigers and Panzer 3s and 4s. RFM Takom and Border are close, but not there yet.
@wenyidong8563
@wenyidong8563 2 года назад
An interesting side note is that unlike Trumpeter and Takom, Dragon does not have its own factory. As a result, Dragon has to stop the production when the contract with one factory ends, and most of the time Dragon is looking for a qualified factory to continue their production (as people found different series of dragon kits have different types of plastic). I think this is partly why Dragon kits are rarer compared to other companies'. Also, Takom's factory also accpets orders from other companies like RFM and Boder as they don't have their own factory.

I'm building there stug 3 ausf B the recent release one that too is very nice it's funny that not 1 sprue has stug 3 ausf B on them lol it's all panzer 4 stug n Brumbar etc on them! So must all be from parts of old kits they managed to make the new 2019 stug ausf B with! I got a load of rare old new stock dragon kit's last week for £40 each absolutely amazing! The sdk 251s 3, 3 in 1 kits with all the extras and figures the Geschutzwagen Grille the bergtiger on the ferdinand Hull to many to mention but one of our old modeler's passed away and his wife held a private auction! It's amazing what's floating around people's attics still! I got 4 Tamiya famos too the tank transporters! Something satisfying about correcting Dragon's kits though eh! Atleast you get alot of the correct parts on other sprues! Its a nice build mate 👍 The same kits in the Syrian 6 day war Box! I used this kit to correct das werks reissued dragon kit they brought out earlier this year!

An older type of muzzle brake was standardly used for the Early type, this your added metal gun is for the Mid version. But it is clear that the tanks that lasted longer had various modifications, including "Schurzen".😉
@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 Год назад
The type of brake I added was introduced in May 1943 which fits the time period. I verified this; there is an original condition May 43 vehicle in my local museum. But the early brake was still used at this time as well.

really informative build review basically every detail covered! why DML added those awful DS tracks... well we do actually know. Anyways something about DML kits I really like is that they are so crisp and look great when built up. awesome work Ewan ! What is the gap behind the mantlet where the gun enters the hull? is that feature of Stug III or simply because it is dry fitted at the moment?

The new kits from Takom Blitz are pretty good. Personally I prefer these Dragon kits, such as 6578 here, or the new Rye Field Model kits but they are more fiddly. It depends on if you are a very experienced modeler or if you just enjoy a straightforward easy project.

@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 2 года назад
I usually look at books for specific details, though for free you can look at www.andreaslarka.net/ for a breakdown of StuG features over production periods. As for the Das Werk 1/16 kit, I don't think I will be building it as it has a lot of issues and the detail is poor (it is an upscaled version of the 1/35 Takom Blitz kit which already is a bit simple on the details in 1/35th scale). I'll probably go for the 1/16 Trumpeter StuG kit coming out in a couple of months.

Will you show us how you airbrush this? I love watching you airbrush you are wery talented, and I love how you film how you mix youre paint in the airbrush cup. Its so satisfying to see the Tamiya paints get blended with thinner and mixed up. I have learned from you the best thinning ratio, thinn paint sprays perfectly with no overspray. Have you tried the new Tamiya lacquer thinner with retarder in? Its wery good you might get even smoother results than with their basic laqcuer thinner because the paint gets a little longer to self level.

@Panzermeister36
@Panzermeister36 2 года назад
Dragon 6365 is basically the same kit but a slightly earlier version. So you will only have the early fender supports G33 (no new parts L4 or whatever), you will not need the C-hooks I talked about (kit S-hooks are fine) and you will have the 50+30mm bolted hull front instead of solid 80mm plate (so you won't have to worry about filling the interlocks). Overall, it builds basically the same vehicle, but without the couple of struggles I pointed out for 6578.
