Finally Bought a Diesel Garden Tractor! 1984 Cub Cadet 882 Joins the Fleet

When I said a few weeks ago that I wanted to find a diesel Cub Cadet tractor to go alongside the 782, I wasn't expecting to find one so soon (especially since I just bought the 318). But I managed to pull the trigger on one just a few days later. I guess that means I'm in with the "cool kids" now. I'm no stranger to diesel engines, and I've operated and been around a lot of diesel garden tractors, but I never owned one and finally decided to venture into that side of the hobby. This will be the last garden tractor I purchase for a long time...need to put a cap on my collection as I already have enough projects and don't have enough space for more tractors. If I purchase another one, I'll have to sell one of my existing four, but I don't plan to do that. I think the "big four" make a great team together.
Two weeks ago, I brought home a rare 1984 Cub Cadet 882 diesel, with a 44C mower deck, Trac-Vac system, QA42 snowblower, wheel weights, and a box of spare parts, including chrome baby-moon hubcaps. The tractor came from Danville, PA and was owned by the same family its whole life, used for mowing and snow removal. The tractor was for sale on Craigslist all winter, then the post expired and it resurfaced a month later with a lower price. I made the seller an offer, and he accepted. Jimmy (JohnDeere318Guy) and I headed out to Reading, PA to pick it up. The tractor was well-maintained by three generations of the original owner's family, and the seller didn't have room for it on his property, so he sold the whole package.
The tractor supposedly has about 550 original hours and recently had a new starter, key switch, fuel pump, and belts installed. The 15-HP Kubota D600 engine starts hard when cold (pretty common issue with them), but runs flawlessly. It mowed very well until the deck belt tensioner spring broke, so I will replace that. It needs a couple odds and ends...I plan to upgrade to a high-torque gear reduction starter, solenoid-controlled glow plugs, and a new battery with stronger cables in the future, to help the hard-starting issue. This tractor may also get a cast iron rear end swap in the future, since the aluminum CCC transaxle makes the rear end very light. Eventually I will be swapping the 3-point hitch over from the 782 as well, and I'd like to find a nice set of Super Lugs and V61's to put on it to match the 782. They will look like twins. And no, I will not be turning up the pump or adding a turbo...trying to keep this one fairly stock. 882's are hard to come by and this one was taken care of.

Sometimes life gets in the way and things change. Unfortunately I had to send this 882 down the road, but I made sure it went to a good home. My buddy Mike Hutchinson owns the tractor now and has some videos of it on his channel, Mike's Cub Cadet World. Go check him out and give him a sub to see more videos of it! ru-vid.com/show-UCQIml-Uyrl4czPWrRGOgfeQ

That's a very nice original example of one of these rare tractors! I must admit I like the yellow and white paint scheme. What is nice about the Deeres with the radiator in the back is there's a radiator grass screen on top of the full belly screen. Makes it easy to clean but having the radiator in the front is nicer for cooling purposes. Runs pretty good!
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 4 года назад
I think the radiator grass screen is commonly overlooked on those tractors, a lot of people forget to remove them and clean them. But it definitely helps since that radiator is pretty restricted.

The 882 has a fine radiator screen that slides down the front. Open the hood and it slides right out the top. These things will definitely run hot if the screen is plugged with cottonwood, etc.

Technically that engine is still in there backwards, just like the engines on any other Cub Cadet. Due to the direction of rotation of the hydro pump. The fan actually runs off the flywheel side of the engine, and the driveshaft, alternator, and I think the water pump as well run off the true front of the engine. Thats also why the thermostat housing is at the “back” of the engine as well.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 4 года назад
Good point. Those hydro pumps were made to turn either CCW or CW depending on application, so I guess it's all relative. Either way, I like having the radiator up front rather than in the rear.

Haven't seen a D600 in a while! Its tiny compared to our newest engine, the S7509 7.5L Inline 6! The modern day version is the Z602 2 cylinder or the D722 3 cylinder. We used that engine in the G5200 garden tractor long time ago. I can help you with workshop manual if you ever tear into it. Our engines usually run pretty cool, some of our older ones didn't even have waterpumps. They just cooled with a thermosiphon. Nice find!

@TheSaturnV

22:50 Just so nobody gets confused, the internals of the rear end are still the same, just the center section of the case is aluminum vs cast iron. The main disadvantage is the loss of that extra weight right at the rear tires. The 3-point hitch is made up of a pretty heavy duty box that bolts directly to the frame. I left the aluminum rear end in mine and have used it very heavily to box blade and bust up tree stumps. What you have to watch for, is that the bolts attaching the rear end to the tractor don't back out and do damage to the aluminum housing. Other than that, they are plenty rugged.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 4 года назад
Thanks for the clarification, I should have been clearer in the video. The aluminum housing takes so much weight away from the rear end which is not good with the heavy engine up front. But the fine-spline axles used in the aluminum rears are superior to the axles used the cast iron rears. Someday down the road if I don't end up doing a cast iron rear swap in this tractor, I will most likely add a pair of Xtreme Motorworks axle braces to keep the axle housings from cracking or losing their bolts.

It’ll be getting a turbo and probably a custom paint color of some sort. Deere belts tend to last the longest. I've had nothing but trouble with the Kevlar belt that's currently on it...it doesn't fit the pulleys (which are grooved differently than other brands of mowers), and just randomly comes off while mowing. The Deere belts are cut at a specific angle to fit their pulleys tightly, and are usually pretty durable as long as the tension is set properly.

I like them both equally. It's hard to choose a favorite, but for sentimental reasons I'd have to say the 318. It's nice having dual brakes and power steering on the 318, but that doesn't make the 882 a bad tractor for not having them.

Here's a quick to do list for that bad boy: 1 - Glow Plug Upgrade 2 - Starter Upgrade 3 - Make sure it has the extra ground wire installed (There's a TSB on it) 4 - Glow wire bypass/starter relay mod I did these mods over a period of a few years and I wish I'd done them all at once. I don't have anything beefier than a run of the mill battery and my 882 cold starts up right away with just around 7-10 seconds of glow plug. I'm interested in the QA42 blower, let me know if you'd be willing to work with me to ship via Fastenal.

Would a diesel engine like the one in your cub Cadet fit in my international Cub Cadet 782?
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 4 года назад
I think it could be done. The mounting cradle and driveshaft are much different than a regular 782, plus you'd have to find a battery tray to put under the hood and a rear-mounted fuel tank since they are mounted opposite of a 782. The parts are not exactly easy to find since there aren't many of these diesels being parted out. You could probably use a smaller 2-cylinder diesel to get around all of that, however.
@dynastar3759
@dynastar3759 3 года назад
15 horsepower goes a long way in a diesel. Kubotas are way easier to work on than some Deeres. I found that ford diesels (lgt14 and 16D) are very easy to maintain and work on and will do everything a Deere or kubota will do.

@MichaelTJD60

It should be on the left side of the engine, down below the injection pump. It's not in a very accessible spot without having to remove the left side panel, I wish they had made it a little more accessible. The dipstick cap is a thin wire loop instead of an actual oil cap, so that doesn't make it easy to spot either.
