Might be an idea to turn the engine over on the lift (no plugs) with the starter motor to check the oil is pumping to that rear cylinder. I'm sure it's going to work this time but it won't take long to rig up some leads to a battery. Amazing perseverance..well done.

If you use Hylomar to seal the engine casings together, you don't need gaskets or RTV. Also if you have to pull the casings apart again it is easier and you never have the problem of stray RTV pieces getting into an oil passage and causing oil starvation.

Another great vid ChiefPep.... have to say I was a bit nervous watching you slip the cylinders down to the con rods thinking to myself 'please I hope the pistons are in the correct orientation' as you fitted the pins. But I relaxed knowing you've rebuilt this engine before and know it very well. Looking forward to the next instalment.

liked the subtitles ( music a little modern ) can i suggest for your tool kit a clutch locking tool ( EBC do one ) so you can torque up the clutch nut correctly , and also a proper automotive ball peen hammer and not a wood work hammer. and another piston ring compressor is needed , you will use it again . very much enjoying the progress , this time all will be well .

Hello, Great your videos, very well even without the translation it is easy to follow. Small question, I redid the segmentation, of my virago 750 1982, I did not need to open the casings and I still have in my kit of replacement gaskets, 5 red o-rings of small diameter (12mm thickness 2mm) which were with that of the lower cylinder ... Any idea of their locations? thank you for your reply.
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 3 года назад
These rings are for inside the engine when you split the gearbox. Also you sometimes find them between at the sidecases. They are seals for oil routes which go through the engine halves. You always can find these anwers at the exploded view www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xv750-virago-1981-b-usa_model8837/partslist/#.X8OOIGhKiUl or your (Haynes) workshopmanual.

Pep, what you did with piston rings seems like an overkill. Check bottom of your cylinders you see it's got a chamfer? Sole purpose of it is to compress piston rings while inserting the piston in.

Hello. I have yamaha xv 750se 5g5 1981 model and now there is head gasket replacement going on. I bought gasket set VG284 and the head gasket thickness is about 4mm. Cylinder track is about 2mm deep. The head gasket material is somekind of white chalkstone I think. Do you know can these gasket get pressed about 2mm or my gasket is too thick? How about cover bolts do I have to by new cover bolts for my yamaha xv 750se 5g5? Do you know are there bolts stretch model? Whats is real torque for cover bolts? Thank you chiefpep 👍
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 2 года назад
I believe I don't understand most of your questions to be honost... Gaskets are supposed to be pressed together. That's why you also need to replace them once used. I have never heard of 'stretch model bolts'. For the torque specifications I always refer to the Hayens workshop manual.

Hi friend, I am having some trouble with the chaing guide (the one that you put in at minute 09:00 ), The rear cylinder was making a ticking noise and after further inspection I have saw that the top part of the chain guide is gone, probably somewhere on the bottom of engine. My question is: I need to take the engine out of the frame to get the cylinder head out so I can replace that guide? Or is there any other way? Also, is that guide hold in place by any bolt? Thank you
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 5 лет назад
That guide can't just be 'gone' or fallen off. It's a pretty short guide. Perhaps you think a top is gone but it's not. One of the two guides is loose on the top and gets pressed by the chaintensioner. That's the round cap that you find on your cylinder with the screw on top. The other cap has nothing under there. You can put your finger in and feel if the chain tension is ok or loose. You press the other tensioner. The one tensioner is being held by the cylinder head. Often a job that doesn't go well instantly or wrong if you put the cylinder head back on for the first time. What makes you think this part fell into your engine?
@garajulfaragaraj
@garajulfaragaraj 5 лет назад
Chiefpep Chiefpep I inspected the rear cylinder further and basically on the right I have a shorter chain guide that is moved by the tensioner and on the right side (side towards the front wheel) should be a longer chain guide that goes into a groove on the bottom of cylinder and on another groove on top of cylinder. I saw clearly that is too short and the top was “broken shaped” so I took the engine cover off and I can see the broken tip of the guide in the lower groove where the guide should sit. So, my question is now: Is there any way to install a replacement chain guide without taking the engine off the bike? Thank you!!
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 5 лет назад
@@garajulfaragaraj yes. In that case you will have to take out the engine and take off the cylinderhead. Hoping you can take out the broken piece. If so, you can put in your new chain guide and reinstall the whole lot.
@garajulfaragaraj
@garajulfaragaraj 5 лет назад
@@chiefpepdesign Hi, as an update: The broken piece is out, tomorrow I'll put the head back after replacing the cam chain guide and gaskets. But I have another question, So on the rear cylinder the left guide (intake side/the longer one) is going in the bottom grove/seat and is locked in place when lowering the head and placing the top of the guide in the seat in the head. BUT what about the right cam chain guide (exhaust side), it is bolted in place on the bottom but it goes into a grove in head as well?
@chiefpepdesign
@chiefpepdesign 5 лет назад
@@garajulfaragaraj no, that one will be pressed and hold to the chain by the chain tensioner
