Hé Guys,
Here is my first update after the camshaft seizure. I got there pretty fast I have to say. It took me about 6 hours so that’s ok. I know the video is a bit long, but there are a lot of topics to discuss during the operation. I could have splited it in two vid’s, but I thought: hé, you can fast forward it, or pick up the next day to finish watching it.

Guys, really the lower banjo bolt is supposed to have 1 hole. Google them and you'll see. That plug looks like silicone plugs that media blasters use to keep from getting media into places like oil ports. Perhaps your blaster used these. Could have plugged an oil port initially and then blew out but after burning up the cam shaft giving the illusion that everything has been lubricated. My guess. Good luck!

Once that engine is properly set up and tuned it’ll be indestructible. Those are some of the best engines ever made.

Hi Chief Pep, Im glad to see you getting right into the engine repair. I tend to agree with LeT's remarks below regarding oil starvation. There are likely several contributing factors to the seizure of the camshaft bearing. Oil starvation due to a low oil level and perhaps low oil pressure from the pump itself. Additionally you mentioned that you had run the engine without re-jetting the carbs which can cause overheating in the top end. The rear cylinder gets a little less airflow making it the first candidate for an overheating problem as stated by Freddy Kooistra. Unfortunately in your excitement on the test ride you did give it the beans, as I recall you were impressed by the engines power....Ooops! I believe that the piston / valve damage is a result of the cam siezure and not a timing issue, as the engine was turned over after the event in an attempt to restart it. Going forward, perhaps an oil pressure gauge would be a handy investment? Good luck with the fix!

Pep, investigate more, i may be wrong but i struuggle to see how the crankcase banjo bolt with only one drilled hole can supply oil to both lines. Maybe remove both lines and mount them on the bolt and see if its possible.

I love all your videos I'm a someone who had one since 19 90 you going to have to sit down so here's the first thing is the starter some reason Yamaha in the US left parts out on the starter 1981 1982 1983 had the starters that miss and would grind 1984 1985 hall the parts to make the starter right but only 1984 and 85 have outer covers that Mach the early engine but but all covers work but internal parts must be used now the gear box had a low 50th gear same 84 85 and newer had the transmission you wanted now cam shafts 84 85 had th best ones and to oil lines after 86 and thoil line where made bigger and oil pumps all oil line that ran to the cams I have a xv 920 1981 bore out to a 1000 and 10 to I compression it will go 130mph also had the same engine in a gocart that engine would Rev out to 11 all day I have videos of it in action hope that helps I love my bike it so rear chain dive it weights 465 lbs

Hi Chief PepI just watched this video and the last one as i am playing catch up. I cant help you with your engine as i dont know that engine BUT I would like to say you are an insperation as you were so down with in the last video but said you would do all the work and in this video you are happer and getting the job done. You are just great and i know you will sort out the problem.

I worked on viragos engines and can tell you that plug is nothing stock from a yamaha virago.

It's interesting to see how different the virago engines are. I'm learning a lot. Mine is a tiny 125cc that's giving me endless headeaches, and we just remove a few wires and bolts, then pull it straight out of the frame by hand haha.. And oil for the camshaft goes up around the cylinder bolts.

Just kidding you will still be the winner, I still have my tank, fenders and covers at the paint shop and I don't even have the rear shocks ready yet. Man it's a bumber having to take the engine back down, but your an excelent mechanic, no doubts you will get her back up and running in no time

Hey Pep! Great to see you looking positive again. Thanks for the update on your engine diagnostic work. I hope you are spending less time video editing now ... :-) About the plug, you have made so many videos, maybe one will show the plug in place when you put your engine together? It could have been from the blasters rather than powder coaters. I am sure the cam seizure is from oil starvation. I would have thought oil being present as you have seen in the head is not the same as having enough oil pressure to 'float' journals in a plain bearing. Even so, it is astonishing to me to see this because camshaft bearings are not under very much load. Is there an internal drilling in the head that takes pressurised oil from the feed to the plain bearing? If so, see if you can blast it through with an air line.

Perhaps it was from the other start with depleted oil supply. It could well be oiling fine now, Cam might have gotten galled on that other start. Hung a valve open long enough to get tapped, doesn't look terrible. Hope you find the root cause, thanks for sharing your woes we've all been through that stuff good job on staying after it.

Sorry man. That’s rough. My engine wasn’t pumping oil either but it’s a bad oil pump but good tips on drilling the holes on the banjo bolts. Hope you can get it going. Good luck

The virago oil sight glass is read when bike is parked on centerstand. Drilling oil bolt feed holes sounds like most reasonable preventitive maintenance modification. I would only drill the oil feed holes tiny amount larger. I'd use a pinvice to hold tiny drill bit and turn by hand. Seeing oil at cylinder head is not evidence of proper oil pressure or functioning oil pump as they can work intermittent. So if oil pump is faulty no matter how much oil you have. It should run on one quart or two even if low. But, I do not know if pump position favors more full.

That bottom banjo bolt only has one hole Pep but has two lines attached to it, that is definitely not right.

Hello thanks for the video i did a custom for me and after i restaure the became 100 miles the cramshaft broke i did nt know why exactly . I repare it. but i ll change to put bearing , it s more logical , thanks for your video.

If the oil level was really low, it could be that the engine was overheated. The rear cilinder is the first victim when this occures. And the valve timing was wrong, that is why the valve hit the piston. Because the damage is so little (lucky you), the valve is still intact and doesn't need replacement.

No timing was perfect but the valve stayed in place due to the cam which did not rotate anymore

That camshaft seized in the bushing as it should come out by hand...plus the fact that the valve contacted the piston should make you weary about that valve guide.

When looking at 12:30. How can the 2 lines to each sylinder be fed by the bolt, having the 2 holes set in the same hight!? As someone else said, check out this.. and remember that sometimes the manuals are having wrong! ..or several and different parts for ALMOST the same mod. Bikes.. Great to see you went on this problem so fast!! Big admire for you there!! :)

Crankcase double banjo bolt should have 2 holes, someone has mixed them up, first head bolt you removed had 2 holes...

I will take out the banjo of my donor engine. Very curious what I find there. Strange thing is that the aftermarket/spare banjo I can order on CMSNL also just has 1 through and through hole... We will find out in the next video!

so i was right, valve said hello piston, slack cam chain jumped a tooth timing out etc that was the noise you heard in that respect you are a bit lucky, it usually holes piston bends valves badly and can trash the cilinder head. diddent guess on a siezed camshaft though !!

Hey Pepijn, two things: 1. You mentioned that you filled almost 4 liters of oil. Normally the engine takes around 3.1liters with filter change (atleast the 920 does), so it probably wasn't "not enough oil". The sight glass is lying to you now. Firstly, it needs to be checked when on the center stand. However, because you changed the front shocks, AND you changed the rear shock, the bike sits differently from OEM (even with the center stand). How do I know? I made a 920 cafe racer. 3.1liters of oil is way above the sight glass, this means that there is no break in the oil level that you can easily see. So it can be interpreted as empty (when oil is clean) or just black (when oil is old). 2. The voltage diagnostic video that you posted earlier. You daytona velona gauge has a built in voltmeter, just use that, works perfectly to see if its charging or not.

If the motor it's completely rebuilt or side covers are removed, at the first filling it needs aprox. 3.7 liters. I don't think it matters the suspension changes as long as the engine stays horizontal.

I assume you checked your timing but do it again. Your valve should not be touching the piston (which you already know) unless your timing is off. I spent a lot of time researching that subject when I was rebuilding my xv920 and these virago's have a wearing timing like 185 degree if I remember this correctly. Also, I had to use a similar method to remove the pin that holds the cam shaft, but the actual camshaft should come out without any use of tools. I say your camshaft was seized pretty well there.

Thanks for your concern. Timing these Virago's is my specialty. See my previous video's. The valve touched the piston due to the fact that the cam was stuck and the valve could not go anywhere. The piston did go up and down but the cam stayed in place... That's the reason... Thanks!

That plug looks like something from powder or paint coating .was parts powder coated or painted some where ? what particles if any can be seen in the oil pump pick up strainer ? also the rocker spindle should just pull out with ease ( its been getting very hot ) rocker arms and cam shaft are cooked for sure , change all , and new tensioners if they are cracked,why no oil delivery to these parts i wonder ? the oil feed to the rear ( exhaust ) rocker spindle must be looked at . change the valve for another ( used is ok ) and the marks in the cylinder barrel appear to be above the ring line so will be ok piston will also be ok , i have run much worse !! it is possible to follow the oil as it pumps ( remove spark plugs and spin motor over on starter ) oil line bolts a bit slack and oil can be seen coming out at gear box (retighten )then cylinder head . with the rocker caps of oil can then be seen pumping through to the rocker arms and cam shaft .I was with you all the way on the strip down , ive been there many times with XV 750 and TR1. you also might want to upgrade to ratchet type cam chain tensioners ( late model XV or TR1 ) i have done this , original coil spring type can and will stick , the XV will live again .....

the xv motors have a oil level warninglight (not oilpressure) and its werry sensitive iff you do fast cornering ore accerlerate heavy upphill the red light can go on so iff u conect electric correct forget about low oillevel

In haynes manual the recomend after owerhaul start up the engine let it idle and losen the lower oilfeed bolt first check for pressure and then after each on the cylinderheads ( bleeding)

Will check with one of my donorbikes... But 'wrong?' Only one type fits. And the holes seemed drilled correctly (rather than what sometimes happenes according to the forum)

Sorry to keep posting but this bothered me, I went to the virago tech forums and researched your cam failure and the general opinion is that the banjo bolt was incorrectly drilled, they did agree that there is only one hole in the lower bolt but then mentioned that the crush washer between the 2 oil lines was notched to allow oil flow to both lines. Also they had pictures of the bolt with the correct drilling and it looked much larger than the hole in your bolt. The moderator on that forum said that the bikes with the incorrect hole size all had cam seizures around 15-20,000 miles Not trying to pester you, just hoping to help. Good luck!

I study this topic daily since the seizure. I even mention it in this video. We've read the same topic I think. Next step will be: first to compare the current banjo with my spares (from my donor engines). Then to see if the banjo needs drilling. Because you've also might read that too big is not good. 4mm has to be the size. But it's not the horizontal holes that need drilling it's the vertical hole. Thanks for your involvement!

Guys, can you share the forum link? Need to investigate this topic aswell as my engine has had some sort of cam oiling failure too in the past. Previous owner changed the camchain and lower camchain sprocket and the chain guides. He also did the cam ballbearing mod.

Hee Chiefpep... Vervelend voor je. Ik heb dat forum ook doorgelezen en heb ook 2 tandwielen liggen ter vervanging van die lagers... Weet alleen niet meer welke kant op ik de bout van de nokkenas moet los draaien. Is dat tegen de klok in of met de klok mee? En is bij beide cilinders hetzelfde? Is wel belangrijk voor ik de bouten met een pneumatische sleutel ga losdraaien... Gr Ron

the small hole is on the inside of the union bolt only drill it a little bit (less pressure bottom end) never seen the rubber , does the engine have a high pressure release? there also a place where you can add an oil pressure gauge (near the start motor)

@Chiefpep hi chief pep... did you change the bearings??? Can you please tell me where did you bought them?? My virago's engine got stuck. I put off the side cover and I got to move the crankshaft, then I started up and after a few minutes i heard a screechy noise and immediately the engine died, and got stuck again. I previously checked the oil level, all oil l lines even oil pump and everything was correct. So watching your video I thought that my problem is inside the camshaft. Or if you have any suggestions I can hear you. Thanks

hey according to haynes manual after overhaul off engine check oilpressure loosen the lower oilfeeding bolt check fore oil and there after each cylinderhead. thats the only way to see iff there is oilpressure

Hey, its a long shot, but have you considered that the exhaust configuration around the rear cylinder may have contributed to the overheating/seized camshaft? I only ask because my exhaust configuration has similarities to yours [though still very different!]... just a thought

In British English, we use debris for lots of tiny broken pieces too. "Shards" also. "Swarf" for when it is metal shavings left over from the manufacturing process.

That valve looks white .you think it ran to lean an overheated that head an stuck cam seen that happened before. That plug looks like a powder coating plug like some other guys said

Wow! That's a good one! A plug from the Wetblaster...! The engine is wetblasted not coated or anything. But they use these kind of plugs I believe aswell... And... perhaps that held a hole closed for the oil consumption to go somewhere...

HI Chiefpep, could you already figure out where the rubber with nr 1 on it was for? I think you had a brand new engine body and the rubber was forgotten to take out before assembling the engine. Knowing that those rubbers are being used to keep paint out of holes during a paint job of machine frames. It could have been forgotten. 2nd suggestion.. If it is a common problem that the holes of the split oil line screws are too small then why not drill them more open .. ? Twee duimen en alle tenen hoog voor je goede en leuke videos!

Thanks for your comment! Haven't you seen the video's which follow? The plug must have been there always instead of the original oil relievevalve. It's some sort of 'modification' some people make. But not a very healthy one apperantly...

Hello, I was wondering if you had to remove any snap rings when removing that timing cover? I removed one out of there somewhere when removing the timing cover to drop the engine and still have it sitting here after putting it back in... Looked through the service manuals and have been searching online and watching videos like this but I have not seen anyone mention it. Update : it goes on the back of the shifter to hold it on the shaft.

@@chiefpepdesign It was not a part of the timing cover, and I probably didn't need to remove it at all. The snap ring I mentioned was behind where the bottom of the foot shifter slides onto it's shaft, not in the timing cover. Thank you for replying!

good I would like to know I have a yamaha virago 920 cc from the year 1982 I have doubts as to gasoline, do I need to mix it with oil? Do you know what type of mixture?

The oil passage bolt that you removed first looked like it had 2 lateral holes in it , the passage bolt that you removed from the bottom only had one. The lower bolt was feeding two oil lines the upper only one, could they have been reversed ? Just an observation.

Really interesting observation. But unfortunately you can not be interchanged. The lower one is longer and is another size. It won't fit in the top. Thanks!

@@tonyclausen8106 I wish that would be possible. Then we would probably have found the cause. I will change union bolt just to be sure from my donor bike. But it only fits there. Way smaller. I will take your comments to the next video. Thanks.

No. They are different. The rear has number 1 on it. Front has number 2

My xv1100 takes 3 liters without filter replacement according Yamaha, should it be overfilling the engine oil by 1 liter harmfull?

Yes. Overfilling it with 1 liter will be very harmfull. The lower end of your crankshaft will constantly touch the oil and start 'milkshaking' it. This could cause serious pressure in the housing and imagine what could happen... Take so oil out!

At 11:30 that bolt has 2 oil feed holes but the one from the gallery only has one hole. Is that correct and if so how come?

dont change bearings, shell bearings are needed for strength. Ball bearings are weaker. Check oil pressure by spinning with electric/air wrench. Sounds like you had enough oil to operate even though not full. Rubber plug didnt do anything just laid on bottom.

The bearings they recommend are industrial bearings for way more intense operations. Operating these cams would be a walk in the park for them. But good heads up. Thanks! 👍

@@chiefpepdesign hi chief pep... did you change the bearings??? Can you please tell me where did you bought them?? My virago's engine got stuck. I put off the side cover and I got to move the crankshaft, then I started up and after a few minutes i heard a screechy noise and immediately the engine died, and got stuck again. I previously checked the oil level, all oil l lines even oil pump and everything was correct. So watching your video I thought that my problem is inside the camshaft. Or if you have any suggestions I can hear you. Thanks

Then which one should it be? It's the only one that fits there... The upper ones are a different size. Next to that, this one is exactly the same as on the CMSNL page...

Upgrade bolt where is holes for both outlets. I dont think that cause this problem but it helps oil flow especially if banjo bolt is tight in banjo.
