Here's some fun facts about these movies: 1. Peter Jackson wasn't even the original director. He stepped in to save it after the director, Guillermo Del Toro, had to leave the project. Peter also wasn't given NEARLY as much pre production time as he did with LOTR, which he got roughly 3 years for. 2. If you read, pick up, or even SEE the book "The Hobbit" anywhere, it's pretty obvious it can't logically be turned into 3 movies, which Peter Jackson didn't want to do. He wanted to do 1 movie, or 2 at most. WB Studios forced him to do 3, though, meaning he had to start making things up. Tauriel isn't even a real character, Azog shouldn't be here until the very end, Sauron has nothing to do with this, etc. 3.Jackson wasn't given as big of a budget either, so a lot of the scenes were filmed in a green screen room. Gandfal actor Ian McKellan broke down crying on set because he was forced to work in this green prison, and hated it. The crew all threw an appreciation party for him the next day, though!

Sir Ian loves to act with people. In the Lord of the Rings, he got to act a lot with the other tall characters, while the hobbits+Gimli acted together. And then the two vids where clipped together with some movie magic. Also a lot of brilliant dwarf dwarf's + kids body doubles. Here Gandalf is almost the only tall person, so they kinda had to put him into the green screen hell. Of course, that doesn't mean Sir Ian suffering is any less. I just in general see a lot of people complaining about how Sir Ian was treated, without understanding why.

Azog was dead, actually. Only Bolg appeared, leading goblins/Orcs.
@WJS774
@WJS774 3 месяца назад
@@WolfFireheart That is giving far too much credit, it wasn't _just_ the tall characters that Sir Ian acted with in the Lord of the Rings, most of the scenes with the hobbits were done using body doubles or forced perspective instead of just greenscreening it. It was _not_ an unavoidable consequence of the different casts of the two books, but just as much the lower production values and over-reliance on CGI of the Hobbit films.

Kili and Tauriel was an even better romance than Aragorn and Arwen was. At least in my opinion, that is. Mostly because Tauriel's actress was freaking BLAZING HOT in that wig, and that makeup! Also, the idea of an Elf and a Dwarf having a romance is so "Romeo and Juliet" that you can't help but love the idea of it. As for the dragon, yeah... Smaug, and basically this entire movie, is the absolute PEAK of this entire trilogy!

Tolkien fans have a love/hate relationship with adaptations of his work. The Peter Jackson Lord Of The Rings is maybe 60-70% of the source material with some pretty significant changes sprinkled in. But it was a great story and fully immersive. Most of us love it! Then they made so much money off the story the studio said we HAVE to do the Hobbit too! PJ didn't want to do them and kinda got sucked into it. He was planning on one move to cover the Hobbit, (It's a fairly small book). But the studios said NO, it has to be 3 movies! In creating a new story that would stretch over 3 movies, many things from the book didn't fit with the new theme and flow. So the fans were expecting ALL of their favorite parts to be in it because they had plenty of time, but what we got was less source material and lots of things that go against Tolkiens writings just so the studios could get a cash grab. If you take the Tolkien out of it, it's a great story though. So we kind of are reluctant, bitter fans. I like it as a fantasy story. But I don't like it as an adaptation of Tolkien.
@jacob4920
@jacob4920 4 месяца назад
It goes deep into the whole Dolguldore subplot, in a way the original "Hobbit" never did. Those events actually did happen, but none of it had anything to do with the original book. It was just expansive material, ripped out of its' proper place in the timeline, in order to make the trilogy possible, in the first place. But the parts of the three movies that actually are faithful to the source book are AMAZING, and thus I am way more forgiving of these trespasses than most other fanboys are.
@toddjackson3136
@toddjackson3136 4 месяца назад
@jacob4920 I agree, the Dolguldore/Necromancer stuff was alluded to in the books, and we know that's where Gandalf went on his "Side Quest" 🙂. But it didn't pertain to the story the Dwarves were part of. I think the biggest thing the fans take issue with is golden boy Legolas. While he wasn't technically in the Hobbit, he would have likely been present for the interaction at the Mirkwood court. And it's possible that he interacted with the company while there. But then they shoe horned in the love triangle, which would have definitely never happened. Even if it made for an interesting storyline in the movies. Also, the LOTR movies really exaggerated his abilities, but the Hobbit movies gifted him abilities that outdo every single other character or race in middle earth. They definitely leaned hard into the already established Legolas fangirl hype as part of the cash grab. And that is, I think, the biggest thing rubbing fans; the clear, unmasked, sticky fingered, cash grab. The LOTRs felt like the studio were also fans, while the Hobbit felt like greedy extortion 😆🤣.

@@toddjackson3136 That may be. It just doesn't bother me as much as it bothers others. Besides, we have "The Rings of Power" series to show us all what a complete middle-finger to Tolkien fans actually looks like. And that goes a long way to helping me forgive "The Hobbit."

I personally think the first Hobbit movie is pretty great, the second one is a lot of fun to watch, and the third has great moments while being a lot more flawed than the other two. That said, the last entry in this trilogy is probably still going to be very enjoyable for people who don't know the book. I just think that it is a bit weird and forced to make a whole third movie of what is like the last 50 pages in the book. It's like a very thinly veiled cash grab and "let's make it a trilogy again" look to me. I saw it in theaters and was a little bit let down storywise, but it was still a fun movie with great visuals and action. It is still a good movie and not as bad an adaptation as others. So I'm looking forward your reaction to the third movie, your videos are always great fun to watch! :)

ill keep it short but i wanna make it clear upfront, i love the hobbit films. i believe most of the additions are improvements. however this is my issue with them: the way i see it, the book kinda has 3 acts. the first hobbit film fills the first act perfectly imo. from the unexpected party to out the frying pan and into the fire (the eagles), perfect. where it goes from in the films is act 2. which is from queer lodgings (beorn) to barrels out of bound and the 3rd act is from arriving in laketown to the aftermath of the battle of the five armies. theres an argument to be made that the third act ends with smaug and theres a 4th act that deals with the aftermath and the five armies. i was really disappointed that act 2 in mirkwood was so squashed together to make room for the big cinematic battle in the 3rd film. those chapter in the book are ENCHANTING. heres a list of things that i absolutely adored in the books that were cut entirely from the films. gandalf taking the dwarves 2 by 2 to beorn as to not startle him and bilbo realising the exact same trick was played on him, beorn's gorgeous garden, bilbo hearing the mysterious moonlight meeting of bears under the door and seeing the pawprints the next morning before it's revealed that the beornings (all the bear people) were discussing what to do with the growing goblin and orc problem and whether to help the dwarves more, mirkwoods challenging atmosphere, the critters that seemed to haunt them all along the path and the river that put bombour into a coma when he fell in it, when theyre attacked by the spiders bilbo frees a few dwarves who are too weak to fight off the spiders again so he has them chase his taunting voice into the woods while the strongest dwarves free everyone else. in the films the dwarves leave the path by accident but in the books they run from it when they see the twinkling light of woodelves celebrating the end of summer through to trees, which is how theyre arrested and finally while in the palace bilbo spends days invisibly searching for an escape while stealing tiny rations and living in the shadows. i was really looking forward to all that but it just was not there. not even mentioning how in the desolation of smaug we don't even see the desolation of smaug, in the book they have to travel through a barren landscape filled with chard and haunting ruins, thats literally what the "desolation" is. final negative points: the scene where tauriel rubs the plant on kili makes me extremely uncomfortable, i dont have a problem with the romance as a whole, i get the point that it takes up too much time and i definately think its a crying shame that one of the only women in this film is added to end up as a love interest but asside from that i like it, i like that its cheesy, i like that its a thing. my other point is; whys legolas gotta be such a blue eyed dick in the hobbit? it makes no sense that after 2000 years of living he has a complete 180 positive personality shift in 60 years after meeting some unpleasant dwarves from racist facist asshole to a kinda arogant elf whos willing to learn tolerance. makes no sense, why add him if he's not going to act like himself? all in all, the lord of the rings films was always going to be a rough act to follow. they were lightning in a bottle and i firmly believe no film will ever reach their level. thats why i think the hobbit gets more hate than it deserves. ok now to end on a positive i'll say why i do actually love these films still. the way bard was turned from this grubby grim guy in the books to the literal folk hero he is in the films is fantastic. he has so much character, hes so amazing. similarly thandril is awesome in the films (as are his eyebrows) such a compelling antagonist, speaking of antagonists, thorin's dragon sickness was PERFECTLY executed. and laketown in the films is so real. i actually didn't realise until after i watched the film just how lacking it is in the book. also the barrel scene is fantastic and so fun. and it goes without saying but martin freemans preformance all the way through is just perfect for bilbo. imo the best portrayal of any of the hobbits in any of the films. anyway i should stop there because i think i made my past self a liar for saying "keep it short". tldr the hobbit films are amazing, people just don't like them because they want them to be lotr, a feat that is quite frankly; impossible.

I think given a lot of the hate is due to how far it strays from the books and lore that its still warranted regardless of the positive parts of the movie

I love that you loved this movie so much!! I was one of those people who thought this trilogy, especially the conclusion quite mid when I first saw them at the theater. As so many years have passed, my appreciation has grown immensely. After watching yours and others' first time reactions, I now feel the Hobbit trilogy is epic and severely underappreciated. 💘

My favorite part about The Desolation of Smaug is that it ends right before any desolation caused by Smaug.
@spiritloa
@spiritloa 4 месяца назад
Hmm I know what u mean but desolation also means something like bleakness. I can‘t really explain it to you in good words bc english isnt my native language haha. The german title is a bit more fitting i guess. Its called „Smaugs Einöde“ which means „Smaugs wasteland“, but I dont find a better translation.
@DamonNomad82
@DamonNomad82 4 месяца назад
As "spiritloa" said, the "Desolation of Smaug" refers to the once green area that was burnt into a wasteland by Smaug when he first drove the dwarves from the Lonely Mountain and took it over.

Elves exist in the unseen realm as well, as brilliant points of light. He was seeing her in her "astral" form much like Frodo saw Arwen (in the movies) and Glorfindel (in the books) as blazing white angels while they could see into the unseen realm

What I find interesting, is that they changed the race of Azog and Bolg for the films: in the book Azog was the king goblin (a goblin I'm sure of but I might be wrong on the king part) and Bolg was his son

Legolas is not on hobbit book, but they did put him in the movies for connection. He's more aggressive because he's a wood elf, they are like "low key savages" between the elves, as described in the book.

The Hobbit was started as a Children’s Story and it reads that way until you get to the Battle of the Five Armies. The controversy is partly because of Tauriel and the Love Story. When they were filming it in the Chat Rooms I said I didn’t care as long as they didn’t change the ultimate ending. Because the ending was the best part of the book.

YEY! I love these movies!! And I was the same. I had loved LOTR for 10 years (it's still my favourite thing ever) and getting to come back to that version of middle earth was nothing short of an absolute treat! Do i love absolutely everything about the movies? No...but i think anything small i didn't like was made up for by the fact it was a big Peter Jackson middle earth hug! Seeing Legolas again was an absolute pleasure. He is not in the books, but I'm pretty sure The Hobbit was written before LOTR was fully established with Tolkien..and Thranduil (Legolas' father) is in the book..and he's like 3000 years old it makes absolute sense for him to be there. And honestly..this is gonna come into play more with movie 3 but I'm gonna say it...sure...they added a LOT to these movies...but as someone who as read (and absolutely loves) the book...I think it's highly underestimated how much went into making this work as 3 movies. It is also very clearly now for an audience that has seen The Lord of the Rings movies and they take advantage of that. There are of course book/lore appendices which..the film makers know much better than I do...so incorporating events that happened around that time even if not in the book I think was smart. We as LOTR viewers are familiar with Sauron and the ring. Adding that looming threat helps that connection, gives more weight and reason to the future battle. Characters in the movie actually have..yknow...a personality (looking at Bard and 90% of the dwarves), Azog gives Thorin a deeper arc. The book is purely from Bilbo's POV and it's a gorgeous lovely hilarious book but that just doesn't work as well on screen i think they did great. I don't love the love triangle..i don't particularly love Kili and Tauriel...but Kili having his own arc adds weight to his story and I appreciate the effort of adding a new badass female character where there is so few. Having Smaug and the dwarves have a proper confrontation to add some action and to show off the absolute beauty that is Smaug makes total. Ties the dwarves in a little more and not just Smaug having a tantrum over a cup going missing and going off to burn a town 😂. Anyway I'll stop fawning now. Excited for movie 3!

Benedict Cumberbatch's performance as Smaug is definitely a high point, he totally nailed the character. Best dragon I can think of in films. The big fight scene was awful though, was a terrible scene in general, he's a damn _dragon,_ there is a very good reason why in the book they _didn't_ fight him at all, let alone trying to kill a _dragon_ using _fire._ 🤦 Not to mention probably the worst CG job I've _ever_ seen on the molten gold. And they made _far_ too much of Legolas, Orlando Bloom having a cameo like Ian Holm and Elijah Wood did in the first one would have been great but instead they basically made him another main character. He has a significantly _bigger_ part than most of the dwarves! 😡
