Great video boss! Subbed! I'm not very "plugged in" (as evidenced there 😅) so I never really heard anything about seasona 1 accept for pretty much what you said. Interesting fact though: the creator said season one was "highly interfered with" by corporate. Apparently most of the school story lines were shoe-horned in by D to make it more like Potter.🙄 damn mouse lol

Yeah it wasn't about her being a fangirl of Philipp it's about how she helped him and how she finds out that the only other human that was ever known to be on the Boiling Isles besides her was the person she hates. It's like when Belos sometimes suggests, they parallel each other and Luz can't emotionally distance herself from that even though she's nothing like Belos
@peep2583
@peep2583 2 года назад
Luz helped him jumpstart his entire plan by giving him the Light glyph which that island was trying to hide from him. It took Luz under a year to find glyphs and made glyph combos from them, it took Phillip decades to find them. She literally fast tracked his plan. Luz constantly blames herself for problems she can't control, idk why ppl are surprised by this.

There’s that in addition to Belos becoming a fully fledged person to her. When she said “no, you’re just Belos,” I interpreted that as meaning that she was upset that Belos is a human, like her, and not just a faceless evil.

I disagree with the point of luz having a bad reaction to finding out about belos/Philip. She is freaking out because she helped him. She is having this reaction because she gave him the last glyph, she blames herself for his rise to power.
@KingBobXVI
@KingBobXVI 2 года назад
Yep, it's not that she feels betrayed, it's that she feels she unwittingly betrayed the isles by making the draining spell possible, for being the one who helped Belos meet the Collector in the first place. I think she's wrong to think it's her fault, he would have found another "sacrifice", and probably would have figured out the light glyph eventually (and was clearly doing fine without it), but it's entirely understandable that she'd internalize it as being her fault, especially given her personality.
@exomancer3632
@exomancer3632 2 года назад
Also, with regards to the whole "say my name" bit, I conjecture that Luz took some amount of solace in the name Belos. Her mortal enemy was part of the fantasy world, and fantasy stories have Villains. But Phillip is of the human world, a much more *real* evil. To call him Philip is to acknowledge that this isn't a fantasy story where the good guys necessarily save the day, it's a real life story. And real life stories are spotty with their happy endings. At least, that's how you could view it through the whole 'questioning the merits of escapism' lens.

I saw a video where someone speculated that Luz is a people pleaser & takes responsibility for things outside of her control. There are lots of instances where she takes full responsibilities for problems that were only partially her fault(some would have happened regardless of her involvement like Eda losing her magic). One of the best showcases of this was "Separate Tides" where she openly admits she thinks she's a burden on Eda's life. I know that sometimes when I was tricked by someone, I felt more at fault (for being a fool) than the actual trickster. Like I should have known better. Luz likely has a similar mindset in that regard. She isn't at fault, but she still blames herself.

What do you mean they flopped with her character? I feel like she’s exactly what they planned her to be. She’s narcissistic and controlling, she used her own children for her benefit. She’s not a good person. My mother was actually eerily similar. She could be bit more 3 dimensional but definitely does not make Odalia a flop of a character. Just an unlikable one. I guess what’s refreshing to me with Alador is that it isn’t a one and done conversation where they go “oh, Odalia is evil. Sorry kids” and everyone has a group hug. It feels like Amity has boundaries and is holding Alador responsible for his part in it. He has to earn a relationship with his children. 18:30 A lesser noticed part of Luz is how much she blames herself, and how she does increasingly grandiose shows of affection to prove herself. This is paired with her becoming prone self sacrifice while she thinks she needs to fix something. For an example we have Escape of the palismen, where after Luz accidentally crashes and gets Owlbert hurt she immediately starts blaming herself for it entirely, she beats herself up over the mistake through out the Bat Queen’s trials and even risks her life to rescue Owlbert. This happens in smaller and background ways, like Luz getting Amity her job at the library back via trials that are obviously shown to have hurt her even if it’s just a bit. Her self sacrificial need to fix things is less noticeable because she’s efficient, she doesn’t really mope or hate herself on her own time instead she does that while fixing the problem as fast as she can. (I wonder if anyone will actually read this?? Well it doesn’t really matter to me, just writing this was fun.)

I think Luz's breakdown in Hollow Mind was less about learning that Belos was Phillip and more about learning that she inadvertantly enabled his genocide plot. While it's true that her contribution was miniscule in the grand scheme of things, Phillip could have easily used someone else to get the mirror, and there was no way she could have possibly known the full extent of his plan, Luz has a track record of blaming herself way too hard for things. So I think it is in character for her specifically to react to the reveal this way.

Part of me gets sad when content creators use other shows to rate a single show. I don't like how the things that make a show or episode great are bogged down for the simple fact that "x show did it first" and nothing else. Yes it can get stale and there no stopping that but that's not the shows fault that amphibia was basically a sister show throughout its entire run time. Which isn't a bad thing, but he doesn't seem to realize that the similarities between TOH/Amphibia are a natural consequence of them both taking inspiration from the classics of the genre. Characters from the "other world" coming into ours is a pretty popular trope - it's been a thing as early as InuYasha. It's like saying that Gravity Falls and Steven Universe are too similar because they both do the "colorful cartoon actually has deep lore" bait-and-switch.

So often people say it's like Amphibia's Season 2, but I disagree- Luz is back with her friends and girlfriend without hesitation, but not her found family. Anne is back with her found family, but she hesitates before revealing them. Just that difference in both the weather and lighting shows a lot. Plus, while Anne is largely in what she wore when her parents last saw her, Luz's outfit has completely changed. She's a new person.

7:45 I disagree. I think that season 2B is rushed, but not in the way you think. I think that rather then changing the plot to fit EVERYTHING they planned, they instead decided to cut filler, use what they have and fit little moments here and there that could have been an entire episode. An example being the jump from luz being captured to IMMEDIATELY going to a fully prepared “CATS”, with steve, which was basically a replacement for another character that’d be revealed later. Also, the breakdown luz had would have probably been more earned if they had more time TO develop the Phillip luz connection. Basically, what season 2b had to drop is character conflicts between everyone that aren’t NEEDED. if someone was planned to be redeemed, they made it easy to redeem them. I personally don’t think it’s a bad thing, as it allows them to have their planned plot, which so far has been AWESOME. Shouldn’t have cut S3&S4 tho disney :/

I was watching every new development, every major twist, every Lumity moment with a community, one that is incredibly considerate and respectful, mind you. It's just a different sensation than watching an entire series in one go on some streaming service, ESPECIALLY with the hiatuses. Those were hard at first, but really gave us time to sit and think on what this show was gonna do next. I haven't had this much fun with a season of television since The Mandalorian season 2, and you KNOW how good that crap was. Looking forward to the finale more than ever! Going from his power hungry gimmick in season 1 to him being given abandonment issues and appreciation for his family, and really focusing on him feeling alone not knowing who he is, to then finding he is the freakin LAST TITAN, and not having the same ambition for all powerful tyrant-ness / still feeling alone as the only titan as well as still having a loving family is just perfection imo. Okay but clouds on the horizon explicitly tells us that every interaction Alador has with Odelia is a careful dance meant to cater to her whims and interests in a way that would allow the kids to keep being normal kids as much as possible, so of course he pitches Amity keeping her friends as something that's good for the family in the long run. Also at that point he fully believes that despite her often terrible means, she has their family's best interests at heart and so the ends justify it all. And I don't see him as being completely absolved, just that his efforts are seen and respected. No one is rushing to crown him dad of the year for finally doing the bare minimum, but I think these kids are mostly just glad that there's at least one more adult willing to listen to them.

"the connection between Philip and her has already pretty much been severed" except it wasn't. We see in them's the breaks, kid that she's still reading his diary and learning his glyph combos. We even have Eda commenting on it saying that she doesn't like Luz still thinking about that creep. And while she doesn't defend him, she's quick to simply change the subject by saying she misses her mom. (not saying that she wasn't genuine about that, just that she clearly didn't wanna address that statement for too long.) And I'd even argue that earlier in hollow mind, when Eda asks her about Belos "and who is he, really?" Luz has this almost guilty expression on her face. Now this could just be me reaching, but I feel like she might have gotten a hunch at that point based on the information she had, but it wasn't something she wanted to confront. Regardless of whether any of this was the intended interpretation or not, I think deep down Luz was never gonna be able to let go of the idealized version of Philip that's lived in her head, ever since she started reading his journal and perhaps even before, when she first heard of another human having been on the isles. And as we know, her problem with separating the fanciful version of people and events in her head from the reality around her is pretty much the entire point of the show, so this breakdown is actually very fitting. But again, that's just how I see it

I had a couple different ideas about the scene with Alador and Odalia in 2x02 back when the episode aired, and the one that I think ended up being right is this: I think Alador’s motivation for letting Amity continue hanging out with her friends was primarily to make her happy, but he framed it the way he did so that Odalia would be convinced. In 2x20 when he tries to push back against Odalia by suggesting they reconsider working with Belos, Odalia counters that by suggesting they have the kids start playing a more active role in the family business. The way she phrased it and the expression on his face gave me the impression that she has been holding this over his head for a while. As for the flashback thing in season 1, I think the writers maybe didn’t fully know which direction they wanted to take the Blights.

Absolutely. Nothing. Granted, they didn't exactly have a way to get back then and there, but the show could have done better at keeping the plot alive, instead of dragging it to a screeching halt. Dana and her crew, however, have made a way to work their shortened runtime to their advantage, allowing for a (hopefully) more tightly written and well-executed finale. These are just my options. And, for me, everything they've done with him has also served to make him a family member and not a "group pet", even as far as him calling Luz sister and Edas parents calling King their grandson. I think Hooty remains the group pet/comic relief, where as King graduated to actual in depth main cast character.

Armchair psychologist here, but she has ZERO self-worth due to her being bullied and ostracized in the human world (and probably blames herself for her dad's death) and Camila misdiagnosed her problem as "being too lost in fantasy to make friends" rather than retreating to fantasy as some form of escape for her problems. Combine that with feeling responsible for Eda's power loss & capture, their money troubles, making her Mom cry after accidentally confessing that she CHOSE to stay in the Boiling Isles and is now trapped there, and now helping Belos achieve his personal "Holy Genocide Run" of the Demon Realm... Her character has always been that she puts higher standards on herself than others, she's more mad at herself for being tricked, for not seeing it sooner. Two, while Alador should still be held accountable for what he did, the example you used misunderstood the meaning behind it. It's not him being opportunistic, it's him learning and speaking the language of his abuser to get around things. He knows morals and emotions don't work on Odalia, the ONLY way to get her to listen is to talk business, a way that benefits her.

i always liked king and hooty because they are plus ones. as an oldest child it’s always felt like my path has had to be the perfect story for my parents to tell, and my siblings always felt like the plus ones in that narrative. i never liked being the chosen one to go to college and do what my dad wants, and my siblings have always felt left out of the plot because of their being literally part of the house, or the pet of the show (figuratively lol). i like how luz stops being the main thing so much in season 2, and how king and hooty got their own things, how everyone got their own things.

At around 20:05 he's talking about Alador being redeemed to easily becuase of the whole "she could become a coven head some day" thing but I think he said that to ease the bit- I mean Odalea and distract her from Amity's (in odalea's eyes) less desirable characteristics.

One thing I love about Belos' writing is how he is completely the opposite of all the other cast members. Almost every cast member, including side characters, is designed to subvert expectations. Luz thinks she wants a fantasy world and deep dives into magic, but ultimately what makes her happy and allows her to grow is the connections she makes there. She wanted a fantasy world but she NEEDED a world that listened to her. King is a delusional child who finds out his delusionals are real and its the biggest fear in his life. Eda is presented at first glance as a self interested criminal, she even refers to King as a roommate rather than someone close to her. Yet shes one of the most caring and loving people on the Isles and it was just an issue of allowing herself to be that. Hunter is a dominating and intimidating force, he comes off as cocky and powerful, episode 6 INSTANTLY ruins that image by making him literally powerless and shattering the image of a headstrong guy when hes actually a domestic abuse victim. So many characters subvert expectations and their development serves to show that and how their story before we get to the Isles influences their actions. Belos is one of very few outliars to that writing style. He is consistently predictable, all "twists" relating to him are not even attempted to be hidden, the only real hidden thing is his view of the witches and his final plan. I just find it extremely fitting that the character representing the unchanging and the old order is the character whos written to be predictable and consistently linear.

19:10 but it wasn't just that she idolized him or sth, she also realized that the only other human on the boiling isles never made it back

I agree with you on lumity- I personally really want to see amity be the one to mess up in their relationship, since overwhelmingly it’s only been luz.

14:03 I guess it wasn't until Lumity that I was aware of just how often that's used, MIScommunication causing rifts and drama and the like, time and time again. Part of why I like Lumity so much is that actually showcasing a healthy relationship where they _don't_ immediately jump to the worst possible conclusion after hearing only half of a conversation or any of the multitudes of similar tropes. They understand and accept each other and even when they get frustrated or make mistakes use that persistent communication to make things right. It's so *REFRESHING.* I love them not just as characters, but I love their *relationship* because of how it inspires me to be that kind of person for other people.

I'm not sure if I would call Hunter's arc a redemption one. He never really was a villain, nor evil, he has nothing to redeem for.

I feel it’s kinda a realization arc. It’s hard to call him a villain when he very much was groomed since creation to be Belos’ lap dog and not understand/realize the atrocities that he’s committing or befalling him. His arc is much more a steady realization of the truth than that of villainy to heroics.

It’s nice to see someone cover the pros and cons of the show. I’ve overall enjoyed it and am excited for Season 3 but there are some parts that lack and they’re worth talking about.

What I love about season1 is that it first focused more on exploring the world and the main characters instead of just rushing to a plot. The fact that the first season focused on exploring the world, the different systems and powers and building up the background for future ideas and episodes was amazing. All the things we would have wanted to see in season 1 was focused on, that way season 2 could focus more on a/the main plot

Where you say you don't think the season was rushed, I disagree in the same points you bring up with Darius and Amity's dad. I think we would have had more time with them as the bad guys slowly turned good like Hunter. BUT I'm fine with it to get the season 2B that we did. I'm glad every episode got to the point and built upon each other while also leaving more reveals for the next episodes. Send the The Owl House team some love on social media, they deserve it, especially after having season 3 cut short.

0:45 I kind of feel that way about Amphibia S1 as well. It makes sense to use some relatively filler episodes in the first season to flesh out the characters and get us to love them, then *really* hammer down on the pain.
