I had to learn Russian for this...
TF2 is a game that's been around for over 16 years! In that time, it's witnessed the rise and fall of so many moments in pop culture, and had the opportunity to represent these moments through in-game cosmetics and references. But how many of these references are in the game? Join my journey to try and find every single reference in all of Team Fortress 2.

Comment below! What's your favorite Heavy cosmetic? NOTE: During the Officer's Ushanka portion of the video, I skipped a portion of the recording during editing. The "or he stole it" bit is supposed to refer to the medal on top of the hat, which is the Hero Of The Soviet Union medal! My bad for missing that! 9:20 Not only is it a reference to Misha the bear, but "Misha" is a common nickname for the name Mikhail (the Russian spelling of the English name Michael), which is Heavy's real name.

the Minsk beef falls more under the russian references, with Belarus being apart of the soviet union, there's a similar joke with the Chicken Kiev

Belarus is also a country very related to Russia, they (and Ukraine) share 1 common "ancestor" country, the Kievan Rus', which all 3 claim to be the succesor of. Its also the reason these 3 have such similiar languages, culture and history.

"Why they gave this German hat to a Russian" Well, it's because Heavy looks similar to those gigantic, minigun-using enemies, of course! You can see them relatively early in The Old Blood.

2:08 8:37 In the lore Heavys father fought in ww1 not ww2, which is why the description says "the big one". Heavys father was also a counter revolutionary in the white army during the Russian civil war. Which is weird that many of heavys hats have communist symbols on it despite Heavy and his family escaped from a gulag after killing all the guards.

Misha is actually just what heavy's family calls him. His real name is Mikhail and his family often refers to him as such in the comics.

To note: While the Crafty Hair is the same hairstyle as Guile's haircut from Street Fighter, it is specifically meant as a reference to one of the random hairstyles that male soldiers can have in the original X-COM: UFO Defense (and the hairstyle was specifically a bonus for preordering the 2012 reboot, Enemy Unknown, along with the Area 451 headgear for Pyro and the Vigilo Confido Pin)

Great video! One tip for Engineer, the Cabinet Mann cosmetic is a reference to the song Cabinet Man by Lemon Demon on the Spirit Phone album, in which a sentient arcade machine sings about his life as an arcade machine. This song was loosely based on the Urban myth Polybius, which was an arcade machine that drove kids insane.

2:03 this helmet and the other Wolfenstein promo item(metal body and shoulder plate) look like the armor of Supersoldiers in The New Order(dead soldiers turned into Frankenstein abominations clad in metal armor and armed with either bullet or laser based miniguns). To me it makes sense that Heavy was given these items since he's also a large unit with a multi-barrelled gun that slowly but surely brings doom whereever he goes.

I think Minsk Beef is not conflicting at all, given that the soviet union was still a thing, both during at the time of tf2 and at the time of rocky, so seeing a city that was part of the soviet union and a soviet fighter, isn't too surprising. Edit: also the katyusha is a reference to the song of the same name, which was popular during the war. As for the bomberplane, while that is true, the multirail rocket launcher with the same name is far more recognizable. Additionally, its appearance stems from Soviet-era tank helmets

so the Jayne hat isn't actually a super niche reference. considering that its arguably one of the biggest icons of the firefly fandom. it's a very wellknown part of the show and is still commonly found at comic expos (at least in north america)

Nice video and good choice of hats to cover. There are some hats ya missed, which are references to other franchises but not as obvious as the cross over ones such as The "Big Steel Jaw of Summer Fun" which is a reference to an upgrade seen on the Orks in the tabletop game warhammer 40k. This was mainly chosen to be given to heavy since in warhammer, the orks love big loud guns (Dakka), fighting in melee and share a similar body shape to the heavy.

So, the pounding father, while based on Ben Franklin, is also a reference to the Motorized Patriots from BioShock Infinite, large enemies that cary Gatling guns. And the Mad Mask (along with the Road Rage) reference Lord Humongous from Mad Max 2, the road warrior.

7:10 This might be a reach here, but i believe this "Sandman" hat could be in reference to Nintendo's Punch Out. Where you have to box a character by the name "Mr. Sandman" who is one of the final characters you fight in the games. Naturally, he is big and burly (and also black). As for why not just make a direct reference to the man? His appearance varies drastically depending on which game/fight. And also to possibly avoid troubles with Nintendo since theyre absolutely sue hungry. So the next best thing was to reference the name of the character.

For future reference the Victorian villainy has two references the first is obviously Victor Frankenstein by Mary Shelly but the 3rd style baleful barber is a Sweeny Tod reference specifically the tim burton adaptation which gave Sweeny a Mallory streak like the cosmetic (And obviously the connection with Sweeny being a barber and Baleful Barber being a play on Sweenys actual name in the play Benjamin Barker.)

He forgot about the history damn. Heavy is a Russian, that's true, but at the times it was USSR so, for example, Minsk was a (sort of) Russian city (it's ~1969 in tf2). Also, Ottoman empire was pretty much connected directly to the Russian history. Though making Heavy look like an enemy of Rus is weird. The Katyusha name more likely refers to BM-13, which Russians themself call Katyusha. The hat itself may be a product of misunderstanding, or it's just to reference the fact that the name "Katyusha" was given to the said plane by Spanish people.(both?) Why do i think the name doesn't refer to the plane? Because we have a song "Katyusha", where it's obvious that Katyusha doesn't fly. Warhood is also a reference to the STALKER series.
