Finding Low Premium Gold Coins

If you're looking for low premium gold coins, you don't have to settle for old, 22K European coins. You might actually have better luck talking to your local coin shop to find certain modern, government-backed gold coins for far less.
This video covers the topic of finding the lowest premium gold and takes a close look at the American Liberty 225th Anniversary Gold Coin.
NOTE: I am not a financial planner. I'm just a guy on the internet, talking about precious metals. Always do your own research before buying gold or silver.

Nice pickup. I’ve been picking up the gold Commemorative’s which no one seems to like for close to spot on EBay. It’s a good way to stack as long as you realize that you are probably only getting spot back when you sell them (at least to an LCS) even in the OGP. Thanks.

Thanks! I talked to two LCS owners lately, and both were only giving spot for Maples right now as well. So if you can get a cheap, good-looking coin with a face value from your country’s mint, it seems like a smart play! Cheers!

The coin never really took off. I remember reading the comments when the mint was asking people what they thought about the different designs. The comments did not favor any of them. Most people seemed to see it as a political SJW attempt at moral posturing, and not a sincere statement.

The 2021 St. Helena gold Queen's Virtue's coin (@ about 5.3% over spot) and the 2022 gold Czech Lion coin (@ around 6-7% over spot). Thanks, you have been adding more videos lately, keep it up! I would like to see a video on your thoughts on gold storage and insurance you have on your stacks. I just bought my first coin yesterday, 1 oz gold eagle, and now I am wondering the best way to store it. Another video that would be useful would be the process of selling it to a coin shop or online and the economics involved. From my limited understanding you buy they coin at time period T. The price is Spot@T + Premium + shipping. When you go to sell, you basically get none of the premium back? So the sell price would be Spot@T1, meaning your profit would be Spot@T1 - Spot@T - Premium -Shipping. Having specific examples would be helpful. Thanks!

Thanks, and good recommendations. That AGE is a great coin, and a local coin shop will / should give you some amount of premium if they’re buying it. By the way, I’d keep the coin at home hidden and in a safe (and in a capsule to make it harder to lose). Cheers!

Hi, I gotta ask. Is there some side to things I’m not understanding when I find coins on ebay sold from well known distributors for these local prices everyone speaks of? Like you can get a krugerrand for $70 over spot on ebay, or a maple for 80-90 over spot right now and britannia’s for like 110 over spot. I am able to find coins on ebay for the equivalent prices you’d pay with wire transfer prices on apmex without a problem. Is there some catch I’m not getting? Same deal on ebay… no tax, no shipping, no insurance on 1oz coins so what am I missing? Yes, the direct websites of these distributors offer more pop up deals but overall I’m unclear otherwise why everyone says you’re getting a better deal at your LCS. The most significant reason to have a relationship locally seems to be if your preference is paying cash, which I can totally understand but if you’re gonna buy online, I’ve yet to see why buying on ebay is so unadvisable. Could you explain this to me?
@gsquare6382
@gsquare6382 2 года назад
I don't understand why you dislike $5 US gold commemorative coins because they have 0.24187 oz. of gold. They have the same size, gold amount/purity, and face value of the coins minted in the US when gold half eagles actually circulated. Why anyone would buy less familiar euro coins with really odd gold amounts doesn't make sense.

Really good information. You are very lucky to have bought the high-relief coin for 80 bucks over spot. I live in Central America and only buy Eagles, Maples or Kruggerands. I am really narrow in my gold coin needs. I wouldn't buy a rooster. Liquidity is a primary concern. The coins go into a private vault box right after purchase and I never touch the coin again until its time to sell. I have no love for gold. Its there for emergency's and also for savings. Only. For now, I am waiting for a dip and when it comes I will buy 2 more Kruggerands. They do the job and will be there when I need them later. By the way, gold has higher premiums where I live. We have to pay for transportation and import taxes. Its still worth it because gold has no reporting requirements. Its the last asset we can own outside of the US that gives us complete privacy. Its a must own asset.

I’m really looking forward to the design change and security features, but I don’t know if I’d wait. I’m still buying 1/4 oz AGEs, but I’m waiting on 1 oz AGEs. The only logic in that is that I can buy 1 oz Buffalos instead (but not 1/4 oz Buffalos).
@ASMRPeople

I have to agree the commeritives seem to be some of the cheapest. I bought a few of the 86 Olympic gold coins pretty cheap. It was back when you could get Ebay bucks promotions and use cash back cards so I paid well below spot, but as I recall the base price was something like 2% over spot. Granted you get a weird amount of gold 0.4848 ounces. When investing in a coin I like to seperate out the price from melt. So if melt is 1900 and you pay 2000, you invested 1900 in gold and 100 in coin premiums. That's not to say it's bad to invest in premiums. In the last year silver has double, but as premiums have tripled.

I haven’t picked up any off-weight commemoratives yet, but I would if the price was right. Thanks!
@1redrubberball
@1redrubberball 3 года назад
Weird weights shouldn't be a problem for anyone with basic math skills. Using your example of .4848 oz and a spot price of $1900 (1900 X .4848 = $921.12 gold value), and anything above that is the premium.

@@momocute1505/ The statement is absolutely "TRUE" in the physical sense . . . but, in the commercial sense it's a bit "MISLEADING." Unfortunately, the U.S.A government Mint and subsequent Dealers have learned that collectors/stackers will PAY MORE for a coin that has very limited production (which actually reduces manufacturing costs for acquiring raw material, etc.) and for coins that have been U.S.A. made. It's a self imposed psychological belief by collectors/stackers that U.S.A. minted gold coins are somehow more valuable than equally (quality wise) minted gold coins from other trusted, government Mints. Accordingly, in a sense, collectors/stackers don't truly believe that "Gold is Gold." They are willing to pay the increased price for such self perpetrating belief. On the other hand, I am a staunch supporter of "Buy American" . . . but, that is not at issue, here!

The primary coin shop I buy from charges $50-70 over spot for such coins that come in off the street. I assume they pay melt for everything. I've picked up proofs at the same price. Out of state I just bought two such coins for ~$60 over spot: the Tuvalu Simpson, and an Aussie one with a Chinese dragon. The stuff that dealers hate and can't move is exactly what I'm looking for. If the spot price ever goes up enough to justify selling, I'm not going to care that my stack of eagles brings a slightly higher price. I agree with you.. I have the 1 oz 225th anniversary gold coin and its smaller counterpart the 1/10 oz .. It is a very well struck nice looking coin... I think the reason for its low premium is it is/was viewed as a controversial coin (first black woman image) The mint has not been able to sell its remaining mintage... If they don't melt them down hopefully they will lower the premium ..

I sold them a few years back when demand was lower, and I had a lot of them. I had to sell them one or two at a time, and I was never able to get spot. Selling a few today wouldn’t be anything I’d be concerned about. Poor timing!

How would people that pay a premium on coins think to make money from selling these coins? Simple, these people would probably also sell their coins also with a premium! And that's how people handle and react to buying coins! It's probably the going price of coins now, after the sellers sells the coins at a premium.

That the 125th anniversary coins are still available from the mint show how unpopular they are. I did a short video on it, and I wonder if that has a direct affect on what you thing the real value is if you have a real unpopular coin, even if it is low mintage.

The 100 corona is usually a lower premium than that online. I can see the appeal of a US coin but if LCS only pay melt I don’t see the point of paying up for it vs foreign.
