Finding the Best Slot 1 Motherboard for my Retro Gaming Rig

When I set out to build Retro PCs the top system I wanted to assemble was a Slot 1 gaming rig. This platform holds a special place in my PC Hardware History. However, the challenge was to build this rig on the Baby AT form factor with the best motherboard I could find. There is still a question about storage and what type I should go with.
Be sure to check out the article dedicated to testing the various motherboards chosen for this build.

wow, lovely, this early slot one mainboard collection, I really enjoy seeing those - its right from the beginning from at to atx, and the whole layout speaks a lot more socket 5/7 than later slot 1 boards. its awesome! here in europe, as far as i know, its hard to come by these - most of my slot 1 boards already have the usual atx shape and layout. ty for the video, gosh, i really love this time period, good memories. a lot people really seem to be stuck in the late 1990s - and i think thats a good thing!

Thanks for watching!! I would have to agree, the 90's was a great time for computer hardware. Companies started to experiment with different configurations and the platform matured as a whole. I do have a socket 370 in Baby AT that I'll be doing a video on shortly, it was basically a board they produced to be backwards compatible, likely for and industrial application.

My pet peeve with the board recyclers is the fact that many times on Ebay they do not include the I/O shield with the motherboard............why............why...........why not???
@Hardwareasylum
@Hardwareasylum Месяц назад
To be fair, the I/O shield is part of the case, not the board, it offers nothing in terms of recycled value and more often than not, the person selling the board on eBay (or whatever) combed through a pile of scrap looking for meth money and by then most everything of value had been removed. To be doubly fair, I have seen my fair share of builders forget the I/O shield when building new machines AND, baby AT motherboards had no I/O so there was no need for an I/O shield. Now, to completely shove the knife in and give it a nice twist. WE (everyone who used these products, and the scammers looking to reclaim lost metals) are at fault for the current state of affairs. The only reason we can even find this stuff is because there are people out there too lazy to throw stuff away. In a way we should be so lucky to find bits of obsolete history only to complain about the condition it was found. Of course, the purpose of this video was to bring up an annoyance and how I ended up solving the problem. It doesn't change the fact that it was annoying and that eventually the spare parts will dry up making Slot style systems completely unusable.

my AT slot 1 board i got doesn't work, it's some crappy PCChips one though with some weird chipset i do want something better and actually works that has like a Intel 440BX/440ZX chipset. that pcchips board came with a celeron 533 in a slotket which works fine.

I've been wanting to mess with the Slotkets but, not so much that I want to buy one special. I have Socket 370 boards already which a considerably better. Overall, The late model AT motherboards were largely ignored except in certain markets (OEM) Even the good Intel chipsets and late model VIA boards have quirks. Which I'll be covering in the next video.

Even if those parts become unavailable, just 3d print them

Easier said than done. The P3 version is too complex for a typical retail printer. While the P2 version is less complex the factory fasteners are "one-of-a-kind" and not something you can source. There are ways to make it work, and believe me I looked into all of them. Much like "wargames" the only winning play is to avoid the problem before it becomes one. I am certain that once the parts are gone so will be this platform, it isn't "that" special.

How is the SATA HDD connected?
@Hardwareasylum

Ding Ding Ding!! You win the "best comment" award!!! My plan is to detail that in the next video for this project. But, since you asked, I have an adapter card that attaches to the IDE port. It supports DMA and so far is working perfectly. Which I cannot say for the various drives I have tried.

@@Hardwareasylum Its nice adapter. I have some adapters connected by ribbon cable, but as you said, they are not working always good, especially on old machines.
