Great video Saji! I loved it, except the part where you kicked Kurtis in the balls 30 times and made confess to some unsolved crimes, that was kinda strange
If this is a play on “It’s Morbin Time” and the singing all over the place is the same as Morpheus flying around attacking everything, it’s in the comment hall of fame for me. If not it’s in the HOF for misconstruing a comment.
The first song sounded like it would be in a Disney channel or Nickelodeon sitcom where the main character gets her heart broken and she’s like “I’m gonna sing this song at the school talent show and show Wyatt what he’s missing 😏”
at the very least it’s nice to see these people excited about the songs they’re putting out which makes me feel bad about hating it 😭 I think they just need to find their niche and practice their songwriting instead of like trying to recycle this H&M pop abcdefu thing
i think sometimes its hard bc the music industry promotes this copy/paste songwriting formula. i agree it's also probably because it's their first time writing a song. i go to a music school and some of the ppl i go to school w put out music like this which is objectively pretty good but very same-y, like they just stuck with music theory/songwriting conventions and didn't really add much creativity
and I have been working on the same for the last few months and have been working on the project management and project management project management project management and management management project management project management project management project management project management project management project management project management project management
people seem to really wanna go the abcefu or drivers license road but I feel like by doing that it’s making a new weird genre of music that is literally just “songs good enough for tiktok clips” idk how to explain lol
Honestly this is so true. Songs will sound good for a 20 sec clip on tik tok but the rest of the song tends to be boring or not as catchy as the chorus.
Long standing artists have made this complaint. Their management and labels have specifically asked for them to make songs that would go viral on tiktok. People who are Billboard artists
This is exactly how I feel about a lot of recent songs, just not… enough pump to the music? To make me sit through the whole song. I always have to skip to the good part 😭
As a fellow stutterer I appreciate that you don't edit yours out. I especially appreciate it when it makes it seem like you're just nervous about selling sex toys.
Yesss. I am a disabled US American, and so many people here are ashamed of disability or any kind of physical, psychological, or mental difference. We had a president who was a wheelchair user, and he never let the US public see him in it. We have a president who is a stutterer now, and he tries to hide it and push the narrative of having "overcome" it. Our last "president" mocked a reporter with cerebral palsy for his spasms, and systematically cut funding to disabled services. It is okay to be disabled. Some of us are even proud.
@@the_snailll , disability is both a social identity on a broad level and, on an individual level, an identity and a health issue. It's okay to feel however you feel about your own stutter, and to not be uncomfortable hearing other people stutter. But I do think that you should stop yourself from discouraging other stutterers from speaking and stuttering if you can. I think of myself as a proud neurodivergent person with ADHD and autism, and how other people with ADHD or autism have hated me for it. Quotes that stand out to me are, "ADHD has ruined my life. How could you be proud?" That also led to the individual following me on an online platform and harassing me with negative comments until I deleted my account. tl;dr: personal shame related to disability is normal and understandable, but please do not project it onto other disabled people
@Kelsey Williams what you said is important but also they didn't seem to be trying to discourage anybody??? All they said was they agreed it was good it wasn't edited but it also reminds them of their own. I'm the same way, I appreciate seeing people embrace the fact that they stutter and not edit it out, but it still brings to mind the jumbled feeling I get when I stutter.
@@janeeyre1990 Personally I'd understand and agree with your response 100% if they said "It reminds me of how I'm uncomfortable with my stutter, so I wish he edited his out" but they said the opposite
loved the bit where saji said “ęïkłpœqrčß” and levitated off the ground and vomited blood, and kurtis started singing like shakira and spinning like a helicopter while flailing his legs while his arms do the ganam style dance, that part was really good! A little unoriginal (as drew gooden has done a pretty similar bit) but saji’s take on it was awesome!
feels like thats the listeners job. its like the music industry has an idea of what past summer songs sounded like but they can't capture it bc songs like olivia rodrigos music are being pumped out and bloating the radio
Honestly it kinda turns me off from their music, I know they’re saying it probably for the algorithm or whatever, but they sound so egotistical when saying that. Like it rubs me the wrong way.
I'm only 10 minutes in and saw only two songs, but so far I've got to say their biggest mistake in trying to make "the song of the summer" is making it a breakup song; And I know breakups are something that everyone experiences, but it just seems like they're really trying to be the next Olivia R. (I don't remember) with the overall tune and the yelling vocals Update: yeah, (almost) everyone is trying to be the next Olivia Rodrigo 😭
yeah! i feel like a song of the summer should be more fun. like that song that was the thing in like 2015-ish (?) that was about having a good day or something. it was rhytmic, it was fun, it wasn't emotional or even that complex in composition or melody or whatever, just fun to hum along with and, dare i say, uplifting
I have a personal vendetta against Olivia Rodrigo’s music. Her stuff is boring and has nothing particularly stand-out about it. That’s fine, and true of pretty much all pop artists, but they aren’t usually lorded as being ground breaking and genre defining?? I personally can appreciate when artists blend music styles and take influence from artists of genres they personally enjoy. Having said that, I can’t stand the whiney-ass vocals she uses. This isn’t pop punk, it’s not emo, it’s just annoying. And then ill informed idiots wanted to credit OLIVIA RODRIGO for the so-called “revival” of pop punk???? ejdjskdjsjdjwidk I was in the car with friends the first time I heard driver’s license, months and MONTHS after it had been released, because I don’t listen to the radio, use tiktok, or stream pop music. I remember scrunching up my nose and asking, “wtf is this song, it sucks” and all of my friends being like, “?????? what do you MEAN what is this song???? it’s all that’s been on for the past 3 months.” It was pretty funny lol Long story short: pop music is mindless and bad, which is FINE, it is written to be vaguely appealing the to greatest possible audience, but as soon as you start pretending otherwise? Yeah, it’s annoying lol. Pop music is a capitalist money making machine, and I can’t be convinced otherwise. I’m a pretentious prick and I know it, but at least I have taste ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@ps1hagridoufofcharacter Exactly!! Even better when you can't even tell what the lyrics are and just vibe to the melody; and the melody itself also doesn't need to be anything special, it just needs to sound, as you said: cheery and fun!
i wish everyone just made music for the sake of just making songs they like and letting them become hits by themselves. no trying to become the next "this person" or "that person. they would sound more authentic and unique, songs nowadays almost sound the same.
@@miriones i dont think its a modern problem. just listen to, for example, any of 80s pop groups and idols. like really listen to their discographies. the earliest ones maybe had something going for them, but after that it's the same blueprint (and the same sound) being repeated because it's worked before. trends form. but i do see your point, music (especially pop music) is very commercial. That's the whole point of it, though. the artist needs to make money, the label needs to make money, the radio station needs to make money... it's all a numbers game. the biggest pop idols and groups are very manufactured to specifically appeal to the widest audience. it's cynical and its frustrating, but that's just how it is. i wish it could be different, too, but, well. capitalism i guess.
timestamps for anyone who wants them 6:36 “old ways” 10:31 “B.O.M.B.” 13:42 white boy rapper guy 16:20 “H2hOe” 20:53 “FWB anthem” 25:20 “F U then bleep” 29:18 “cleopatra” 31:43 “plastic therapy” 34:24 “go south” ------------ now my personal rankings: (just a ranked list cause i didnt feel like doing a ten point system) (also it’s just how much i like them not how good of a summer song they’d be) 1. “H2hOe” - like water, it had a great flow! creative lyrics, plus the bouncy beat works really well 2. “cleopatra” - badass lyrics, love the organ sound in the buildup, really adds a kind of holy/regal/powerful vibe, very good 3. “go south” - i don’t typically listen to country but god damn this was catchy…… bonus points for the clever lyrics and, since it’s country, deviation from the typical poppy sound of tiktok hits 4. “B.O.M.B.” - pretty badass, i like the drop, lyrics lock in perfectly with the beat which i like, not too “tiktok music”-y 5. “FWB anthem” - i was pretty iffy on it in the beginning but then it was kinda wholesome so i like it :) also the guy has a good voice, i personally think it sounds kinda empty of harmony but who knows maybe theres a chorus we didnt hear where theres some instruments lol 6. “plastic therapy” - ehhh not a big fan of the whole girl power glorification of consumerism (don’t get me wrong, go get that stuff if you want it, i’m not saying its morally wrong or anything, i just don’t really like the kind of mass support for conspicuous consumption) but the song goes hard 7. “old ways”- pretty generic i think, but not bad, i like the way the lines connect in ways you might not expect at first. i like the old ways line when it happens, not bad at all 8. rapper guy- only reason he’s all the way down here is cause i just liked the other ones more than him, i liked his too it’s just unfortunate that there’s nothing else to fill the gap in quality between his rap and the breakup nursery rhyme below lol rip 9. “F U then bleep”- god this song is like… it’s not even that bad but every time it does that spelling thing i cringe into the next dimension lmao plus i genuinely am not sure i understand the idea behind the lyrics lol, literally just an ABCDEFU copycat but i can still get behind it cause ik how it feels to be rlly excited and proud of a new song you’ve just made, even if it isn’t the best thing ever
It’s nice to see people pushing themselves out of their comfort zone and putting their art out to the public. Regardless of if I like their music. Takes a lot of guts to do that especially on app like tic toc.
To me, this whole new popular genre of music sounds like songs you'd hear in the back of a makeover montage of an old Mary Kate and Ashley movie or something... Like kind of angsty pop rock but like on a younger than teenage level
i don't think the songs are bad, i even think the girl who sang b.o.m.b has some potential to be really interesting, but they all sound so similar. i think they should really define what they want to do and how they want to do it instead of trying to please the algorithm, even if it means not getting as much interaction (though now that i think about it, gathering a large enough following with generic songs to then pursue more unique styles of music isn't exactly a bad idea). every artist should bring something new to the table.
i actually listen to quite a few of her songs but i also know they're pretty mediocre and similar. they're good dance songs to hype myself up, but nothing super noteworthy. i found her though through my favourite musician mothica since they're friends and have collabed. mothica is really good i think, sounds more unique in her recent stuff which is awesome.
I really like her voice, but all her songs are clearly meant to go viral on TikTok, and sound pretty much the same. Then again, even huge artists are being asked to make music specifically for TikTok, so I can't blame her for just trying that strategy.
@@froggy5748 I don't think she is? she says "this is our new anthem" but it doesn't look like she's claiming it - she's just dancing to a song she likes
i like the one at 30:00. its not super extremely unique but its the most unique one so far. like all of them sound good, it would be funny if someone was like “song of the summer!” and then go into heavy nu metal pig screams or smth lol
Amazing video guys! Super entertaining and informative! i loved the part where saji waterboarded kurtis after kurtis confessed to robbing a family of six on november 8th, 1987!
@@ar-yj8lb to add to that, like they mentioned in the video, it adds a lot of preconceived notions about what the song will be/sound like. And when it doesn’t, it’s even more disappointing
upsahl is actually a real musician and she's really great! i saw her live a few years ago and i've loved her ever since, definitely someone to check out :)
Honestly, most of them didn't feel like "songs of the summer" to me. Maybe it's just me being weirdly specific, but a summer song to me should be upbeat and feel like I can drive around a scenic area or run along the beach laughing with my friends to it. Also, that girl with the country song manufactured an accent for the song?? Unforgivable.
Idk if anyone else had this experience but I had a friend who would always show me their music and it was always mediocre or straight dogshit. I always ended up feeling like I was held hostage listening to their music. Then they ask what do I think and I usually make an excuse to dip bc it was just too much. The few times I gave my feedback they never took it into consideration so I was always like ?? That’s what these tik toks make me feel.
i had a friend in high school who was legit insanely talented in music, but even then it's always awkward just sitting there and listening to it lmao - that feeling of being "held hostage" is just universal. the best thing that kid ever did was mod some music into a game so we all just played the game together and occasionally said "this music slaps"
used to have a thing with a ‘rapper/producer’ and went thru what u did only intensified cause he would CONSTANTLY expect feedback from me seeing as how we were intimate 💀 he seemed to value my feedback bc he thought i have a good music taste, apparently it was one of the reasons he liked me so much, but it slowly became an ick and i dumped him lol. like u said, it would always be soooo extremely mid or straight up musically illegible 😭 to this day, he still makes mid music and is a struggling producer living on daddy’s wallet (i only know cause he reached out to me again after breaking up with his long term fiancée 💀💀💀)
that first one wasnt even BAD it was just.... a song. you know? like yeah, thats a song alright! shes not talentless and she clearly enjoyed her creation but its just not........... as magical as she made it seem. anyway im gonna finish the rest of the vid and pray that they arent all garbage! edit: not b.o.m.b being in this cuz i unironically love the singer, she has some good tracks HAHA last edit: okay so like most of these songs arent even bad! nice to know my ears arent ruined!
KURTIS CONNER? I remember when you had less than 50k subscribers, which wasn't that long ago, and now you're collabing with Kurtis Conner? Congratulations man!
Yeah they're all cool with each other it's a commentary community- the editors and commentators are all friendly and chill together is this why everyone saying they're proud of him I'm proud of him too, but this should be a normal natural occurrence. He should be able to get people as cool as kurtis on his channel all the time because he's just as cool.
I don't know it seems backhanded to congratulate him on having a video with somebody because the other person is a bigger RU-vidr I didn't even go into this video thinking about it I was just like "oh cool people I know both of good for them"
It’s the way they so confidently say “this is the song of the summer! Try not to get too excited” or whatever with their not even mediocre pop shit. That’s what makes it soo cringe. The overconfidence
I just wanna say, I found your channel recently and I adore the things you do. You're incredibly funny and a big inspiration to me. I'm really excited to watch this video. Thank you.
Such a cool video!! I really liked the part where Saji shined a Lazer in Kurtis's eyeballs and slapped the shit out of him while screaming "WHERE IS IT"!?!?! while Kurtis cried "I'LL NEVER TELL! IM NO SNITCH"! And then Saji kicked him until he bled to death😍 it was SO cool!🥺💖💖💖
Look there's nothing wrong with confidence and bring proud of what you put out, but anyone who says "Guys I just made THE song of the summer" just sounds conceited to me and makes me cringe.
I love Upsahls music, I’ve been a fan before she was an artist. I followed her on TikTok and was obsessed with her taking memes and singing over them, she was one of the first people to make those type of videos. She’s so cool.
These aren’t bad songs they just feel very copy and paste and remind me of like 50 different songs I’ve heard before. Also they sound kinda out dated like they’d be great for like 2018/2019 but now the sound is a little different
You need better coping skills. If they do anything you don't like you'll be disappointed to such an extreme because you choose to emotionally rely on two random men you don't know
You should watch Donald Glover's comedy bit on artists appreciating their own content. "Artists aren't allowed to enjoy their own work. You would never tell a chef that made himself dinner, 'oh, feeling cocky today, are we?" Or how about a seamstress that made her own dress? Why does that change when someone gains more commercial success?
@@artisticbeautybyhanako6801 It's really just music and movies though, I think that it's because a lot of people don't like hearing their own voice/seeing themselves, so it's weird when someone actually does.
@@saranlinx9301 you can enjoy the things you make but just seeing someone viciously banging their head to a song that very much doesn't deserve it feels weird. They will make the most boring song that sounds exactly like 50 other songs on TikTok and then make a video banging their head to it. A good way to promote your music on TikTok is to do something like make a music video (which you can do pretty cheaply in this day in age) or just simply film yourself singing it, not just listening to it. The way they promote their music is atrocious.
I wasn't expecting it, but i really loved the fact that you just listened to and fairly rated the songs, i'd love more content like this. Also the part where you french kissed Kurtis was pretty weird but overall good video.
Something I don't like about songs where people say they might have made the song of the summer: it's always about romance. It's always about a partner or a break up or a one night stand or something like....idk I guess there was so much of that for so many years that I'm kind of burned out on it. Maybe if the song tried a different sounding way to sing about those topics? Like they try the same kind of sound for it all and it isn't fun anymore or that distinct. idk they aren't even bad songs! But they're songs that make me feel like they played so many times for a decade that I immediately tune them out like I'm in a store
WHEN I TELL YOU I SCREAMED WHEN I SAW THE AMOUNT OF SUBSCRIBERS, AND VIEWS YOU HAVE- I'M SO FUCKING HAPPY THAT YOU'RE GROWING!!!!! It's just so cool to see bigger south asian youtubers :)))
I like some of these but if you’re calling your own song the song of the summer you’ve already lost, a song of the summer cannot be manufactured, it must be naturally EARNED
My song of the year 2023 is definitely "free me" by anees, it's just an upbeat, groovy selflove anthem and is the most fun song to listen to I've heard in a long time.
aritzia is really popular in the US rn mainly like clean girl aesthetic you can find them in the US and not just major cities, so kurtis wasn't that wrong
i absolutely NEED kurtis to know that aritzia isn't just in canada i know a lot of people order it online in the U.S. too but the whole thing led to his identity crisis and i just need him to know he was right the first time
the thing about the one song being released in september is so funny cause like it will be summer in the southern hemisphere so technically it is still the song of the summer 😭😭😭😭
