Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Brewster's Millions Of Rants with Fingerpicking In The Dark. As I shared here on RU-vid and also on Facebook, the power was out here for nearly 48-hours, and during that time I found myself sitting in the dark by candlelight, playing acoustic and nylon string guitars and music. This is directly related to what you'll find hiding in this episode - so let's dive in!
The fingerstyle workout featured in this lesson was something I wrote back when I was in high school, while taking classical guitar lessons from an instructor at a local university (with Mr. Renato Butturi). To be honest, I hadn't thought about or played through this piece in a very long time (a few decades ago), and this idea came back to me during the recent power outage, which was totally a déjà vu moment, to say the least.
The exercise itself contains a simple five chord progression based in open position, with a few extensions/alterations added to those chords, but the real action is what your fingerpicking hand will be doing throughout, as there are various arpeggio rolls, plucked octaves, leap-frog string skipping movements, and much more. I distinctly remember putting a number of the fingerstyle motions/movements into this exercise that I was working on at that time, which makes this idea a great fingerstyle and arpeggio-based workout, warmup, technique boost, and more!
Needless to say, if you've asked for more classical/fingerstyle lessons and material, are a guitarist looking to improve their fingerpicking technique and ability, are looking for something completely different to work on, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

This is great, David, I play nylon string fingerstyle exclusively (been learning flamenco since the pandemic) so I love collecting pieces like this to practice on. I love having made the switch to nylon. Now when I travel I don't even think about bringing a guitar, I just buy a cheap nylon string at a thrift shop and sell it back before I leave. So much happier like you said with the simplicity and the fundamentals that playing fingerstyle engenders. Thank you my RU-vid guitar teacher!

Awesome piece here David . I have a Taylor 110-e guitar I keep next to my bed on its stand , and cannot tell you how many times my wife wakes up , middle of the night , catching me “ noodling around on it “ when some random arrangement gets stuck in my head & I just gotta work on it until I figure it out . I find that playing by feel without seeing what I’m actually doing has helped in many ways . Anyway thanks again for all you post & share with us , and hopefully will see more of your acoustic abilities in future . 😎👍

Very cool piece. I find it interesting that some tunes I don’t play for years & they come back no problem. Others I forget (shortly after learning) & relearn & re-forget. I bet that’s common…

Dave, I recall a 1980s Guitar Player (Magazine) article where Carlos Santana said he practiced in the dark for years, to develop his ear, pitch and technique to make sounds. That's always been good enough for me to do it too .. Love your channel, man. It's the most fabulous guitar channel out there. Your piece has fine emotion, enjoyed it so much.

Wonderful original nocturn composition! Not sure if you have a name for it. `Song In the Dark` might be a good one. I noticed you and other classical guitarist don`t anchor with your pinky on the soundboard yet you still have accurate finger control. Looks like you anchor with your forearm on the guitar top and possibly wrist on the bridge area. Anyways, enjoyed this episode and hope you do more acoustic fingerpicking videos.

My dad is 74 now and he could play about any style on guitar, chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, and I myself play and have damn near 20 years but I can not get that finger picking down ,, but I'm also left handed but play guitar right handed, that may be my problem.

And with an acoustic guitar if you're chording hand doesn't chord correctly it deadens the strings , so you have to chord with some strength.

Try to do a lesson about the riffs and solos by the band Dr Sin of the guitarist Eduardo Edu Ardanuy. They use to open for 80's bands and was the top 10 greatest guitar player in 1988. He has a solo album called Electric Nightmare to check out also all the Dr Sin albums.

Honestly,, I think that style limits your usually awesome creativity, and harmony, I think it would be good if you did another approach, but make it more flamenco, your rock language, and instincts are good for that
