This week, I pulled out my oldest quilt in progress and took a stab at FINALLY finishing it! Its spring break, so I have lots of time to devote to it!
English paper piecing is a great technique and I learned a lot working on this quilt--I'd do it much differently if I were to start all over!
I have not included instructions for English Paper Piecing since I'm still finding new ways to improve my own stitching. But! There is a fantastic three part tutorial by Tula Pink on the Fat Quarter Shop RU-vid Channel. I've put the three videos in a playlist you can see here: • English Paper Piecing
💕 Have you subscribed to the channel yet? Its a totally free, easy way to support me and help me continue to grow on youtube and make more videos for you! You can click the red button under the video or click here: ru-vid.com...

I've been quilting since the 70s. I had to step away from it in 2000 when a quilt I did for a book ruined my neck while machine quilting it. Last June, after 3 spinal surgeries, plates and rods, I jumped back in. I finished about a dozen WIPs projects I started some 20 years ago and I've been at it since. Congrats of finishing your WIP!

Congratulations on finishing. I love this style of quilt. I started a hand sewn paper piecing quilt just after my daughter was born 43years ago and I am in the final stages of completing it. If I do nothing else this year except finish this quilt I will be very happy. Loving your videos. Xx

Congratulations on the finish!! Love seeing the old C+S prints. I have a few still in stash. When my son had his wisdom teeth out, he woke up wanting to talk about the Israeli-Palestinian crisis. My husband obliged while laughing. Made the oral surgeon's day. I hope your boy is feeling better.

EPP is my quilting heart. I have 7 epp quilts going along with my traditional machine piecing. The trick is the rotation. Commit to doing at least one block of each epp a month then work on everything else. You can then go back and do whatever you want but my Epps advance by one block a month. Some of them are 18 inches big with 30 plus pieces. You get somewhere. You really do. I often do more but never less. I keep a calendar to keep up with it. I finished my 8th quilt for 2022 yesterday. Onward!

I LOVE EPP as well!!! I work on it all the time. People are always amazed and think it takes more time than it does. For me the time is in the prep work. I always have something ready to go either to be sewn, or basted by my chair and work on it at the end of the day while watching TV. I can't watch TV without something to work on now or I get edgy since I'm so used to having a project. I find it very relaxing and mediative to work on.

Awesome quilt! Kudos to you for persevering to where the end is in sight. It called to mind a couple of WIP's I have in the closet. I admire your tenacity even more because this is a quilt I would never attempt because I hate hand sewing. As I commented to someone once, if hand sewing was a requirement of quilting, I would find a different hobby. But I sure do admire you for tackling it and wrestling it into submission! It is beautiful!

When I assemble a machine-pieced top, I also assemble it in sections. I hate those long seams. I call this method by the elegant (not!) name “chunking” because I assemble the top in “chunks”. Congrats on your finish. Great job!

I just finished my EPP plus quilt also. It’s not nearly as big as yours but I added some large borders to make it a usable size. Bravo!!! Your beautiful epp scrap quilt top is amazing, and best of all…finished! Congratulations!!! Last winter I completed two patient ufo quilts so I know the satisfaction of finishing a project that has been waiting to be completed for a very long time. One of them was my 3rd quilt also, started in 1980! The other was from 2003. Both are finished and now in use. I’m sure you’re relieved to have your top ready for quilting! And you’ve gained lots of insight into the process and how you’d tackle another similar project. Congratulations 🎊🎉🍾🎈

I absolutely LOVE EPP. I never glue baste, only thread and I just pop the papers out leaving the basting stitches in which help keep everything tidy and my seams where I want them. I also make things up in sections and sew the sections up in the end. I don't remove my papers until done, but you can remove them as you go so long as they are surrounded on all sides with sewn pieces (it's just your personal preference). I don't know about your stitching especially since you say this is one of your early projects but I can tell you that my EPP projects are far harder to rip and undo than machine sewn projects. Never under estimate how strong hand stitching is. Typically I tell people if you like doing things like appliqué by hand then you will probably LOVE EPP. It seems to be the sort of thing that you either love (like appliqué) or don't. Anyone looking to learn Sue Daily (among others) have RU-vid videos. There are tons of different methods and you just have to try and see what you like, for example some like glue basting, others thread (like me). Only way to know is just trial and error. Can't wait to see how you quilt it????

5 years to finish a quilt isn't bad. I still haven't finished one of my first quilts. I hand pieced and quilted. I still get it out and work on it between other projects. The quilt is now 32 year in the making. I think this year I will finish it.

I have not (yet) done any EPP but enjoy FPP. A magpie eye can get one into trouble. My greatest love (at the moment) are star blocks, most particularly LeMoyne Stars, so I'm making them all different ways (traditionally) to include scrappy renditions which has been most fun to experiment with. There are blocks and piecing methods to suit all tastes, and in the end they need to go from WIP to WID (work is done)

Kudos to you for getting this top done! I wanted to try EPP but my hand goes numb too fast. I do really like FPP & make lots of small (with plans to try tiny) blocks for ornaments & such. I really admire people who have made EPP quilts. It's a lot of hand work that results in a beautiful piece you just can't get with a machine.

I bet that felt good! When you said how old it was I was like Pffft, hold my beer lol- my oldest project is when I first learned to quilt in 1987.... templates from cereal boxes, hand stitched, the whole nine yards. It ended up being king sized. About 8 years ago I hand appliqued butterflies over bad areas and big squares ( it is a nine patch with alternating plain squares). My road block is that it is entirely hand pieced and I feel it should be hand quilted. It is just so LARGE. I am still unsure if I should hand quilt or send to LAQ. It is good quality fabric I bought while we lived in Japan, so I want to finish it. I should give it to the child I was pregnant with when I pieced it- he is now 34! bahahaha
