I just saw this and got out my Hourglass Ethereal Light finishing powder and used it over the top of everything. What a beautiful difference! I have had this powder for a.few years and never knew what to do with it. Thanks!
Finishing powder is a product that I think everyone needs. This probably sounds picky or snarky, but I’ve refused to have my makeup applied by an MUA who doesn’t use finishing powder. That’s how important it is to me. I discovered its importance when I was studying makeup application for film and photography in general. It can make a huge difference.
@@buvneshwarisharma3045 I recommend trying both ways to see which way you prefer. Some like it prior and others after. There are no rules with makeup :)
Charlotte Tilbury is still my favorite finishing powder, but a more budget friendly option is NYX Can't Stop Won't Stop Mattifying Powder. Even though it says "mattifying", it's actually a more natural, almost satiny finish but without shine. After spending a lifetime with oily skin, I just can't bring myself to use any of those "shiny" powders. I tried, but they make me want to blot my skin almost immediately, LOL!
This is the Best. Tip. Ever! I’m 56 and almost always use a finishing powder (and you were actually the one who taught me the difference between setting and finishing powders years ago!) I think you nailed it. The older I get the more finishing powder helps me!! It’s the secret to a more blurred look (and helps tone down my blush which I tend to over apply! 😂) Plus, I still have oily/combo skin and must set with a matte powder, but I can use finishing powder to bring more radiance back to my face. The MAC is my favorite, too, but I also do okay with Hourglass, and Chantecaille.
This has to be one of the most educational make up video I have watched! Most of us out here are not make up experts. We may know our skin type and undertone, but the intricacies of make up can be overwhelming. Thank you for making it so easy to understand. I have the hourglass tiger palette and have never used the finishing powder… here I go, trying it now… THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
This was SO helpful, Stephanie! I never used finishing powder as I didn't know how to use it. I have one in my Hourglass Leopard Palette plus I have CT powder. I will definitely add this to my makeup routine. Thank you for this short but informative video. Greatly appreciated..
This might be the solution I was looking for. I can never get my blush to go on evenly, and a finishing powder may help even it out. I use quality brushes, BK Beauty, & REPHR, so I think it’s just user error. 🤷♀️ 😂. Thanks so much Steph !
I became a powder convert about 5 years ago, having thought I wouldn't love the finish. It turns out I love the Hourglass and Elf Halo Glow powders for finishing.
The physicians formula butter glow powder is perfection for a finishing powder!!! I like it above my hourglass powders. I have both and use PF daily. 44 with oily skin.
This might be a dumb question, but is it best to use finishing powder as last last step after setting spray or use setting spray after finishing powder?
I've just asked a commenter what powder she used to achieve a flawless 53 years old complexions, so I'm going to ask you the same question 😁 I practically never wear a foundation under my makeup so I've never used a finishing powder. However I found that video very informative thanks to her live example which I found great! I sometimes can go a bit overboard with my blush. Therefore to see how Stephanie smoothed and blurred her on-purpose exaggerated blushed/highlighted face really convinced me 🙂
I use Laura Mercier candleglow sheer perfecting powder but it has been discontinued. When it is gone it will be a sad day but I will probably try Mac's finishing powder.
I have been using Meteorites by Guerlain for years as the last step in my makeup. It gives an absolutely beautiful finish. It is pricey and you are supposed to use their special brush, but my first container lasted me for over ten years. I never heard of a finishing powder but have always used it that way. The new Givenchy powder reminds me of the Meteorites but it is a loose powder unlike the solid balls. I highly recommend it!
I have used Bare Minerals Original loose powder at the end of my makeup routine for years and have received so many compliments on how good my makeup looks. And I am 71 yo. I have learned that you have to keep trying until you find something that works for you.
This looks awesome...I can't wait for your next video when you explain the difference of which powder to use when! I have loose and pressed powders and would love for my finishing touch to look like you this video. 💚
Thank you so much Stephanie ❣️ I have terrible pores on my nose so I will try this👍 You ALWAYS look so pretty! Your makeup, skin, hair are all just beautiful ❣️ Looking forward to the “powders” video to come🥰
Hi Stephanie. I looked for your video with top setting and finishing powders you referenced as upcoming, but couldn’t’t find it. I see you had some from a few years ago. Did you ever post the video? Thanks
I was going to skip this because I thought I had powders down, but it was a great reminder to use finishing powders which I don’t always use…can’t wait for the overall order video because it turns out I’ve amassed a lot of powder
Thank you for this video. Nobody talks about finishing powders anymore and I haven’t been sure how to use the one I have in my Hourglass palette. Now I know! 😁
How can I tell if a powder is a “setting powder” or a “finishing powder” I don’t think I’ve ever seen a powder that was specifically called a finishing powder. What makes a powder a finishing powder as opposed to a setting powder? Is it more finely milled? This sounds like EXACTLY what I’ve been needing after my skin changed for the worse (thanks to the good old menopause! My skin now seems more “crepey” and my pores are much more pronounced)with age, but I’m in the U.K. and I’m not convinced I’m going to be able to find one 🤦🏻♀️ help!!
@@barndi Ah right, that would make sense, have I understood it correctly that finishing power also has a tiny bit of shimmer or luminescence to it rather than being a flat powder?
Hi! Some are loose and some are pressed. I gave several examples in the video 🤩 One of my examples was actually a loose powder. Bare Minerals Mineral Veil is also loose. Most powders will say finishing powder. Most HD powders are finishing powders and powders that have a glow to them are used as finishing powders. Though some finishing powders do have a soft matte finish rather than a glow. But setting powders state that they're setting powders. I hope that clarified a bit!
I never used to own a finishing powder until i bought my first hourglass holiday palette last year and wow! does it make a difference! It totally changed my makeup game 😎
My mind is blown by your perfect explanation. My skin is very similar to yours so I am excited to try this. Which shade of the Elf and Physicians Formula powder did you personally use?
I have to try this and by pure coincidence I have the Mac powder in my collection somewhere. Will definitely be train this next time I’m getting ready.
I'm excited to try this. I generally don't use powders because I have dry skin so I'm glad u brought that up. I like to use a really dewy highlighter at the end (Merit in Cava). I don't think this would go well with powder over it. Should I do finishing powder than dewy highlighter or would that defeat the purpose. Thanks!!
You can absolutely do your highlighter over it if you prefer. There are no hard and fast rules. Try it under and see what happens. If it dulls it too much, put some on top! :)
Hi! I usually apply setting spray after I'm completely finished because I want my makeup set in like that. But experiment to see what you like best. You may prefer to do setting spray and then follow with finishing powder :)
I'll be interested in your video on powders. I find it confusing between Finishing, Setting, Blotting, etc. And why wouldn't I just use the Givenchy, if it can be used for Setting and Finishing? One product for both.
Hi Stephanie, thank you for this video. Just to clarify, would I apply powder in this order after my foundation?: setting powder, then setting spray, then finishing powder?
Hi! Apply your foundation (then cream or liquid color products if you use those) then setting powder (then powder color products if you use those). I usually apply my finishing powder at this point and then my setting spray if I'm using it because I want my makeup set in like that. But experiment to see what you like best. You may prefer to do setting spray and then follow with finishing powder :)
Great video Stephanie! Thank you so much! I have I believe 2 of these powders (maybe one more, need to go through my stash 😬) but I have been confused as how to use them since I have been using my Laura Mercier loose setting powder for setting my face. I had to have been influenced to buy those finishing powders but can’t remember where or why. I look forward to the next video you out on the different powders! 🥰👍 You and Risa are my faves 🙌
It does help my makeup last longer than it would if I didn't do it, but for truly bulletproof makeup that lasts a really long time, I do use setting spray.
Stephanie, im scouting your channel to look for a video where you talk about how to apply concealer on your under eyes that doesn’t look cakey or set into the fine lines. I have not been able to find such a video, and also concealer recommendations for aging skin. Please help!! I’m trying out make up products for my wedding and I’ve come to notice that all concealers I’ve tried make me look 10 years older and I’m about to give up 🥲 what am I missing? Do I need an under eye specific primer?
Look for both my how to conceal hollows and dark circles video from a few months ago and for the aquaphor one from maybe a month ago where I show some nice prep-step options (other than aquaphor). You can find an entire playlist on my main channel all about concealer where those and other concealer videos are found. 💗
@@StephanieMarie I did watch the Aquaphor one and have placed a pick up order for it at Ulta! I’m very hopeful! But I’ll watch the other one too! I did watch a video where you show how to apply the Estee Lauder foundation and you mention on that video that you don’t bring the foundation up to under the eyes, and I feel like that may have contributed for my terrible results. I’ve always applied foundation everywhere (including the under eyes) and then a layer of concealer on top of what still needed more coverage. I’m going to now adjust that and hopefully get better results!
Do you have to set your face before using finishing powder? I just don’t want to use double powder because I have dry skin, but I love the look the Charlotte tilbury and hourglass give
Thank you for this great video. I have dry and mature skin,so I never use powder much. I do like Ami Cole powder but I’ll have to see if it’s a setting or finishing powder.
I haven't tried that one but it looks like a setting powder based on the description. You can always try finishing with it and see if you like the results. If not, grab something else! Thank you for watching!
I assume that you don't need to use finishing powder when using other powder products, like Laura Geller's foundation as an example? My pores are enormous and nothing is working!
So helpful I have not been liking the way foundations have been looking lately and this is the step I think I need. In your opinion which powder is the best for a candle lit glow?
Hi Stephanie! My holy grail setting powder was also the Laura Mercier Candleglow powder. So disappointed that it was discontinued. How do you find the replacement compares to the original? Weighing up whether to try it once my candleglow hits pan. Thanks ☺️
I loved that one too! I find the new one to be more sheer and not quite the same. I like it but don't love it the way I did Candleglow. I prefer MAC to it :)
Do you have any tricks for texture and dryness? I have Melasma and am currently on Hydroquinone. It's causing slight peeling, which is making my makeup look terrible. I use hydrating essence, a nice barrier supportive moisturizer and the P. Calm sunscreen you recommended. It helps, but the moment I put foundation on, you can see every bit of the peeling😢
I'm not sure how often you're using it, but it's usually best to start out using products like that 1-2x a week to build your skin tolerance up, then add a day as tolerated, and so on. That helps minimize peeling and dryness. You may want to try backing off your usage a bit until your skin is fully adjusted. You could also try adding a bit of facial oil (maracuja, marula, rose hip or something else) into your facial moisturizer or topping your moisturizer with it.
Hi Stephanie, I’m Jennie. Can you please recommend a good drugstore finishing powder I want to try it and I’ve never used finishing powder before. Thank you, Jennie.
I think that the physicians formula, elf and Sephora are considered to be drugstore brands. At least none of the rest are what I would consider drugstore. I hope this helps
So, right after all your makeup (foundation, blush, etc) you apply SETTING powder and right after you apply FINISHING powder? 😳 pleeeeease clarify this for me ❤, isn’t that too much powder?
Hi, you apply the setting powder after your foundation and concealer. Then apply your blush and all other make up. Then the finishing powder. Hope that helps.
Setting powder is applied to set foundation, concealer, creams and liquids. You apply it after those. Then you apply other powder color products. After you're finished with ALL of you're makeup, the final step is finishing powder. It's polishes off the look
I don't either :) It can't hurt to try it out. I'd use a less dense brush with it since it may have more coverage than you might want. It makes me shiny, so if it does that to you, you may find extra shine from it. But it never hurts to try using an unused product in an alternate way. You never know!
Im 55 with combo oily T with texture (pores and fine lines). I try to avoid layering powders (bothe setting and finishing) cuz my oils create cakiness. So which should i choose?
I'm 48 and also have oily/combo skin and find the MAC I demo'ed with to be smoothing and non-cakey and to have the right amount of luminosity. Everyone is different. But that's the one I like.
I'm confused.. so if we only use powder products (no creams on the face) we use the setting powder, apply our products (blush, bronzer, etc) and then finishing powder?
