With this project we are taking chain drive to the next level and seeing how well it works with 4WD and large 32" tires. I've had great success with the chain drive setup on the CBR1000 buggy so with this project I want to build it again but this time we are making it 4WD with big 32" tires and its a two seater. we are using a T90 transmission as a transfer case to give us high/medium/low range and reverse.

Another work of art. That is an impressive drive line. The alignment of the cross brace may not be technically perfect, but it looks great and will definitely get the job done. I hope all watching appreciate the time,effort, and thought that has gone into this build. Not to mention the extra time to set up cameras and edit these outstanding videos. Finally, does it have a name? Mr. T 🤔 for all the gold chains, lol. Great work.

Next project I’d like to see something road legal, but off road capable. Preferably with differentials and axels, lol I get it though and it’s fun to experiment with stuff. The main thing I’d be worried about is how loud that machine will be when you factor in exhaust, chain noise and everything else. I’ve had this complaint for years, but if the powersports industry would research and deploy less loud exhaust systems, there would be less people complaining about them. Inexperienced people think loud = fast which is hardly true.

Another approach may be to use a diff (locked) at the drive on the pivot point, and attach sprockets to the ends (one off a small 4x4 for driving front). Then you could put the engine and transfer box in a straight line onto the input shaft … But that’s some thinking getting all the chains working 👍👍

On every build you do, I can see your fabrication skills just keep going up and up, you're definitely an inspirational worker. I would just point out that you don't absolutely need to use round tubing on the entire frame, (which you don't, I can say) you can incorporate more flat bar, u-channel, t-bar etc. etc. Fantastic work Chris, truly awesome!

Hi, I like the videos,great workmanship to get everything squared up and done right. I have notice in some spots with the chains slack,it seems that the tensioner will have to be on the torque side (top part of the chain) of the chain. Tensioners should allways be on the bottom (slack side) to avoid tensioner wear.
@mooversspeedshop
@mooversspeedshop Год назад
Depends on which side the driving side is. The tensioner on the top, of the engine to transfer case chain is on the low tension side

awesome work with the secondary gearbox. nice to see the chain tension adjustment across that main shaft work out! on a unrelate note the placement on those two air ducts on the front of the air box. is very convenient! as most of the bikes that motors like this come IE (most 600cc-1000cc super bike engines) use fresh air ducts on the front fairing area to direct a bit of air to the box and create a bit of pressure. faster you go..... more dense the air gets going into that air box. food for thought. but there is plenty of room to get some ducts to those inlets down the road! also a bit of a snorkel for off roading! great work! love the videos

I noticed that you used pillow blocks on the input and output shafts on that transmission. I swear by pillow blocks they are very strong, and very adjustable, and they are grease able, and they are reasonably priced. I have only one concern now that its starting to come together. the amount of bars used in the frame and rollcage are starting to add up. and it's making me curious about it having a weight problem. especially in the area of HP to weight ratio. and you might have to add some guides on the longer sections of chain, to reduce chain wrap up. otherwise I don't see any other issues. I worked in a muffler shop, and occasionally I would have to build roll cages for the circle track cars. that run at the local track. and from what I could tell your frame and cage is looking good.

I watched a video about a guy who bought a 6x6 amphibious ATV by Amphicat built in the 70's, and it had a similar looking drive train with multiple chains and axels and sprockets. It was about 50 years old, and it still worked like a charm. It needs to be said that those amphinious 6 wheel ATV's don't drive really fast. But you might conclude that if it still works after 50 years that it is a proven concept.

At any rate, I hope this field goes viral cuz it is lit! It looks like it is built like a tank! The size of it with the giant tires is going to make it look lit!
@JimRyan-AKA-Pigeon_Kicker
@JimRyan-AKA-Pigeon_Kicker Год назад
You might have to use a pinch style tension mechanism where you have lessened chain slap while you apply throttle and let off the throttle. I mean think about it, you're mashing on the torque then reversing that torque every time. A floating compression style tensioner will let the chain adjust itself to the forward and reverse torque while maintaining your set chain tension. In theory I guess, if you follow my thoughts.
@airgunningyup
@airgunningyup Год назад
a simple solution when you find a random highspot and want to narrow it down is to put the part bewteen centers. this eliminates the chuck from the equation , especially if you make a center in the chuck and leave it there to hold the work ( because you have now machined the new center exactly 0 on the spindle axis )

Something people might be missing is that unlike the chains on bikes, the tension on those on this machine (and Chris's previous builds) don't vary with suspension movement because the pivots and drive sprockets are concentric, and that's much easier on them.

@EliteRock Год назад
@@fullmetaljacket7 Cut/paste of a reply further down; _"Very inefficient setup for sure ..."_ No, actually. Even in less than optimal condition chains are intrinsically very efficient, _more_ so than gears, particularly bevels such as in diffs which generate a lot of side-thrust internally. Obviously losses increase with wear and loss of lubrication, but o-ring chains can withstand high loads for high mileages without much degradation. Some people must be gauging their efficiency from dried-out, crusty chains on neglected kid's bicycles.
@fullmetaljacket7
@fullmetaljacket7 Год назад
@@EliteRock And you must be gauging their efficiency based on a motorcycle that uses ONE single chain, not a bunch of them, together with tensioners, bearing blocks and whatnot. Not to mention, he's gonna have a lot of fun adjusting all of them after each ride after he learns chain stretch is a thing. If chains were ideal for such application, 4x4's would use them instead of driveshafts.

Very interesting video. Just a friendly suggestion, did you ever consider using (front wheel drive splined hub bearings) mounted to your input and output plates on the stckshift trans there-by supporting your input and output shafts and sprockets mounted to the 4 or 5 stud hub. Would "just" have to take trans splined collars turned down to fit bored out wheel hub splines, then welded. Than again maybe not, good luck 🤞 thanks for sharing 🙂

Awesome content man!! Love this build in particular! Heads up. If you want a better finish with no filing on regular and mildly hard steels. Use high speed steel. Carbide is awesome and my biggest lathe is fully set up with it. But on a tool room size lathe you really aren’t pushing the carbide hard enough to get a great finish. A nice honed h.s.s. Will give a spectacular finish on steel 90% of the time. Especially critical if you are running a lip seal or o ring on the surface.

Chris the thing that people don't understand then aren't mechanically inclined is with the setup you have if you break one to change on the rear-drive you still got one will pull them also the disadvantage of a CV joint and the advantage of using sprockets is you can always change the sprockets out and get different mechanical advantage different gear ratios you can't do that with a fixed gear box with CV axles....
