I'm a machinist, not a welder. However I do know the ideal angle for butt welding is 30 degrees on both pieces. Keep up the great work Chris!

The best way to line a sprocket up is to put a chain on them and spin it a few times. It will naturally find a true line

If you can find a tank off of a broken air compressor you could add an auxiliary surge tank that should make up for the smaller compressor, it'll run a little longer to pressurize but you'll have a larger reserve volume of air to work with, love the project brother, can't wait to see her choochin under her own steam

Let’s not use drills to do tests like that, it’s a great way to break a wrist…as you almost found out! Remember Chris, some people speak without the benefit of forethought…so pat them on the head and give them a simple explanation and they will be just fine. One advantage to the angle iron is you can easily see the axle turn. Once you have beautiful welds and running within a few thousands you can't tell if it is turning. I wouldn't worry about the axles. Very nice job. Actually the whole thing is looking awesome.

I hope you look into industrial chain slides, for your long chains. They are slippery plastic chain slides, inside a stainless steel square tube. I also hope you consider Steel-It as your coating, on all that hard work.

For the front sprocket, maybe you can bend a thin walled tube in the same radius as the sprocket and then cut it in half? Then make it bolt on so you can remove it? Like a cover if you know what I mean?

Chris buddy little info. Check out the chain to sprocket setup on a mini sprint. They use these plates on either side of the sprocket to keep chain from jumping while racing. They are usually aluminum so wouldn't add much weight to the build.

Awesome! Make sure to pull those boots to make sure the axles are properly greased after putting all that heat in them with the welding. Also looks like you might need more bracing in the door area. With the doors off looks like you only have the one "door" bar and it's brace. Seems like that area could fold.

That air valve on that air over hydraulic jack is killing it's performance, take that thing off, put you a ball valve or some other free flowing valve, we did this conversion for ours in the shop, you can tell it's the same jack! Also heard you say your compressor isn't big enough, if you can find a tank at the scrap yard, like another compressor take, plumb it in between your compressor and hose blocking off all other outlets your not using, gives you more ai volume and that is probably enough to make it easier for your compressor, we have special tank we hook up to shop compressor when we use our 1inch impact for big boy bolts 😂, makes a world of difference 😉

Seems prety much every project, you weld an axle like this at least twice. It might be worth it to build a dedicated mount that turns really slow, keeps it aligned, and don't need to super-heat those rubber covers. I suppose something like that would take a lot of space. These huge projects are pretty impressive, doing in such a small shop. The disassembly was beautiful. ;-) Looking forward to more on this one. Most over the top project yet.

I thought your use of the angle-iron as a mockup/welding-centerer-thiny was rather obvious in its purpose as a mockup/welding-clamping-tool, but I guess not everyone in the comments are on the same wavelength or quite grok the need to keep things aligned. I'm really looking forward to this monster when its finished, its gonna be very cool :)

The disconnect needs to be on the front axle instead of the jackshaft, otherwise it'll be like the front brakes are always on spinning that 30lb chain

You usually get porosity when the gas doesn't shield properly. Maby try turning the gas up slightly and see if it helps. The metal looked very clean to me so other than lack of gas would be my guess. Also try relocating the ground, sometimes that helps. Love the videos man.

Nice Job on the CVs bro! I think I would sleeve them because I tend to overbuild things but I'm sure those CVs and shafts are made for twice the vehicle weight and horsepower of this vehicle so they are probably just fine. I'm really loving this Mid-shaft Chain drive design! It's a hell of a concept and you've proven it really works with rear-wheel drive amazingly. Can't wait to see how this works! Hope it's not too loud. Not that I would care too much if I had it in the woods. This one is going to be a beast!

Another choose for the sprockets to be attached to a shaft is called a Taper Looc. It uses a Morris taper to lock the sprocket to a shaft. Won’t fail like a key. 18:21 18:21

you can put pretension all the chains on this project. normally chains need slack because the swingarm pivot and the sprocket are not in the same spot, but they are on your trophy truck. this should help a bit with the chain hitting the frame.

Take the 2 springs off the bottle jack, you don’t need 4 of them, adding unneeded pressure pulling back on it. See if that helps

A quick wipe with some acetone should remove any oil from weld surfaces. I would guess if you lathe the surface rather than grind you'll have much better results - grinding can embed some material in the surface. I think cut off wheels and disc grinders are the worst for this, compared to a stone or sandpaper, but I'm not a pro.

17:48 Those blocks would be perfect for tube bending. To keep the tube level for the 2nd or 3rd bend. 18:55 Next time use a square or hex rod & matching hubs. 19:02 Move the springs to each end of the hose. To protect hose from bending too tight.

Perhaps air is getting trapped under the weld (thus causing porosity) due to too narrow a bevel you're welding into. Perhaps a wider bevel would assure you're welding clear to the bottom of the bevel, and therefore not creating any voids of trapped air beneath the weld pool.

Great progress. Can not wait till its buttoned up and painted. Going to look great. Maybe aneal and then heat treat axles? Was a pain doing them once would suck to do them 2xs. Plus whatever else might break when they let go. Then sleave them. You are running pretty big tires.

The axles instead of sleeving them you could drill a hole or 2 (not interfering with each other) through the welds and weld pins in it then turn it back down so if in the future you need to replace the rubber covers/dust boots on the drive shafts you can without struggling to get the replacements over the sleeve and then having to make new ones if they get torn up

Nice progress Chris! I can't imagine the time it took to weld and broach the keyways. 🤯 I only have 1 concern... The front chain tensioner will slide/move when a high torque is applied. The clamping force on the smooth tube won't be enough. You will need some sort of splines or second mounting point to keep the clamps from sliding on the tube. But as always, great content ! Can't wait to hear that 1300cc scream!

Union boilermaker here (a trade that would mutually benefit you and us, we need folks exactly like you), porosity issues , try using a gas lense, or put a Y in your 100% argon hose and purge your weld. You mentioned putting a shallow bevel so you didn't have to weld as much, that makes me think maybe you had to stick your tungsten out too far to get to the center. I'd bet on those issues first. Did you know they now make a clear cup for your TIG torch? They're awesome. Also, Tig is good for the center, maybe first couple passes but that's as far as I'd go, I'd stick weld the rest. It would take me probably ten minutes to make that weld, no offense, I've been doing it forever. I've learned quite a few things from your channel, just thought I'd try and help. Also, idk what state you live in but being a boilermaker is a great career and you are seriously what we look for , you have a good mechanical head on your shoulders!

When welding the axels like that, you can leave fractures in the center. That caused me to break a few axels. I set mine up in the lathe to weld them.

If you let the material cool down a little between passes it's good. But don't weld at cold thick stuff cause that will draw to much heat from the weld and might cause it to harden and get brittle, CrMo definitely requires pre-heat because of that. And to much heat will only induce grain growth in the HAZ and also make it brittle like when you do wide weaves, so several narrower string passes are better. Each pass will also anneal the previous weld so avoid weaving even though it's tempting and looks nice. At my IWS course we did a comparison with MMA(stick), one piece as cold as possible and several strings, and the other hot and weaving. Even though we had slag inclusions in the cold weld as the stick went out and got stuck several times as we had such low amperage it had higher tensile strength with an inclusion than the hot weld. So if you want strength then preheat a little if it's thick stuff, keep the amperage low and no weaving and let the temp get back down between the passes. And make smooth transitions, a sharp angle on a very bulgy weld could become a stress riser and induce a crack so avoid that, grind down the weld if necessary.
