Finland's Pohjanmaa-class corvette program is making good progress. According to the Finnish Navy, the procurement contracts signed a year ago laid a solid foundation and the preparatory work is currently underway for the start of construction in 2022.
The Pohjanmaa-class corvette will be the backbone of the Finnish Navy’s fleet for decades to come, but it will be a while before the first ship hits the water.
The physical steel cutting and welding of the ships is planned to start at Rauma Marine Constructions in 2022. This is a new challenge for the shipyard. Modern warships differ from the yard’s most traditional ship designs, such as passenger car ferries in many respects. Due to its nature, the project for the Finnish Defense Forces also requires stricter security arrangements than usual.
The vessels are to be built under a canopy, which is why the yard is currently planning the necessary hall investments to implement this construction method.
The shipyard, which has a long shipbuilding tradition in Rauma, will take on a new area when it starts practical work on a challenging warship project. Jyrki Heinimaa, CEO of Rauma Marine Construction, describes the project ahead:
A warship is made for combat and in that sense very different from a passenger car ferry. Unlike passenger car ferries, warships do not have common large spaces for people and goods. The warship is a very compact entity, which means that the available space must accommodate the maximum number of equipment, systems and people.
Construction must take place in a very strictly decided order. In this respect, advance planning of shipbuilding is extremely important for construction.
An exceptionally efficient and versatile combat system, ie a combat management system, sensors and weapon systems, will be procured for the ship class on the scale of the Navy and partly also the Defense Forces. Such a class of surface combatant capable of mine laying and mine counter measure missions has no equivalent in the world.
The co-operation between the Finnish Navy and Rauma Shipyard has been excellent throughout history and the co-operation is still seamless. The decision-making of the Squadron 2020 project involved and will involve many different stages. Due to the different construction model, which includes the Finnish Defense Forces Logistics Department and the combat system supplier Saab, the project’s cooperation requires continuous tripartite cooperation in the implementation of the project.
The Pohjanmaa-class corvettes (Squadron 2020 program) will be constructed in Finland. They will be multi role surface combatants with ice breaking capabilities. The construction contract (worth 647.6 million Euros) was awarded to Finnish shipbuilder Rauma Marine Constructions in September 2019. The construction of the four corvettes will is set to start in 2022 and end in 2025. Full operational status of the entire Pohjanmaa-class with the Finnish Navy is expected to be achieved by 2028.
Saab was selected in September 2019 to provide and integrate the combat system and sensors of the corvettes. The vessels will be equipped with ESSM surface to air missiles, Gabriel V anti-ship missiles and Torpedo 47 torpedoes. Kongsberg will equip the vessels with its SS2030 and SD9500 sonars.
Together with the existing four Hamina-class missile boats that are currently being modernized, the four new corvettes will form the backbone of the Finnish Navy from the mid-2020s. They will replace seven older vessels that have been or are due to be decommissioned: the single Pohjanmaa and two Hämeenmaa-class minelayers as wll as four Rauma-class missile boats.

Good that the remaining Helsinki-class boats found good use! Rauma-class and finally the Hamina-class were the successors, but in my opinion our military is too eager to withdraw hardware from service.

Armament: PTO2020 Gabriel anti-surface missile system, ITO20 Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft missile system. Light Torpedo Torped 47 as an anti-submarine system. Sea mines as a mining system. The 57-millimeter BAE Bofors cannon, decoy launchers and remote-controlled weapons are used as close-in self-defense systems. Sensors: Surveillance and fire control radar, echo sounder and towed hydrophone cable, hull sonar Battle Management System: Saab 9LV etc....

Today, a frigate refers to a medium-sized warship with a draft of about 1,500 to 4,000 tons, used in naval departments for surface and air defense, as fast patrol and missile ships, and as anti-submarine ships.(US) In France, frigates are ships smaller than a cruiser and there is no equivalent to the term destroyer.

This type of "fregat" design, is excactly what Denmark neds for its Thetis class 4 arctic corvettes replacement
@jarkkosorri8903

According to the international ship classification, corvettes are the smallest battleships. According to the sinking of Ostrobothnia-class ships, they could still be easily classified as frigates and, based on their armament, even as destroyers.

I would like to know from someone why Finland, which would fight in littorals and skerries, chose the IAI Gabriel 5 Missile rather than the NSM or RBS-15?Any thoughts?

@jonnekallu1627
@jonnekallu1627 3 года назад
My personal guess would be because the Gabriel missiles are perhaps better at distinguishing radar return signals of ships from one another. Hamina Class missile boats will be responsible for littoral combat and as far as I know they are fitted with RBS-15 anti-ship missiles where as the Pohjanmaa class is more responsible to keep the open sea trade routes open & protected. Perhaps the Gabriel missiles are better at distinguishing between passenger ferries and enemy warships? They are Israeli made missiles and it's pretty busy at the mediterranean sea. All those fishing boats, cargo ships, neighboring nation patrol boats and all... Just my guess.
@duhni4551

Gabriel was chosen since it can be used against land targets also. I guess there are other weapon sales in play too, Israel and Finland have long tradition in selling weapon systems to each others.
@octowuss1888

Feel silly replying to a year old post, but the Gabriel 5 has an advanced active multi-spectra seeker designed for cluttered littoral environments. So it should be just as capable as the NSM. Probably cheaper too.
@ajk1616
@ajk1616 10 месяцев назад
Old post but I reply anyway.... at the time of selection Finnish Navy summarized the selection as "The best and most affordable candidate was selected." Rarely best and cheapest fit in the same sentence but in this case it could materialize. Multi-spectral seeker designed form littoral environment + active radar. Missile with sea and land attack capability. Notably Gabriel V warhead is 2x weight compared to NSM and has reported overall weight of 1250kg (NSM 400kg).Excluding warhead NSM weights 280kg while Gabriel V is 1000kg. There must be something extra buried in those kg's.

@ghansu
@ghansu 3 года назад
Modern warships dont use much more higher caliber deck guns anymore. Ships dont have any armor anymore because its useless against modern weapon systems like missiles and torpedoes. Thats there because its rapid firing gun with very good fuse, which in best case can shoot down missile, low flying plane and sink a small attack craft from quite of distance. If you have got your ship in gun range in any other ship these days you have done something horrible wrong.

It's spelled "Poh-Yanmah", for crying out loud! And The Finnish Navy can make do with Gabriel missiles, coz if enemy has survived SAAB sensors, SAAB JAS-39 Gripen E, SAAB torpedoes and SAAB Bofors/ Bae 57 Mk III/ Bae 40 Mk IV there's nothing to lose engaging Gabriel missiles. [Just joking]

What worries me somewhat is the very small main gub. Actually too small even for the Hamina Class from which they will be transferred to these de facto frigates. They look simply ridiculos in the new home. A war ship type that without exception has at least 76 mm main gun. Gabriel surface missiles on the other hand are clear improvement. Unfortunately Evolved Sparrow ai defense missiles are like the main gun too low reaching. Absolutely of no worry to the enemy (Russia) whose possible attacks they are meant to counter for. I definitely disagree with the Finnish defence forces with the peanut armament of the frigates. Too many in that size and wit that armament. More Hamina class type ships would have been needed with Gabriel missiles and also with 76 mm automatic main gun. I would have purchased a good condition second hand Euro Frigate for international jobs, training and flagship purposes. In the Finnish archipelago we might have been able to develope even smaller than Hamina class fast attacl missile boats wit lesser number but high quality missilis and those smaller boats maybe wit 57 mm peanut main gun and casette systems of changing rapidly use mode to torpedo and or mine service boats
@duhni4551
@duhni4551 2 года назад
Those guns are meant to counter missiles, when these ships destroys targets they will do it with missiles not with guns. Peanut armaments? These things will have destroyers armament which is unheard of in this class of ships =D Also we have all sorts of ships on top of Hamina, you ought to read about these things before you get desperate over it =D
@kk-gr3ly

and why does it matter when the bow cannon is used at soft and close targets and possibly missles? You do realize that 57mm fires faster than the 76?
