Finnegan' Garage Ep.66: Cummins-Powered Chevy Dually to Single Wheel Axle Swap!

My '73 Chevy C30 Ramp Truck has led a hard life. It was converted to Ramp Truck status early on and has been hauling cars ever since. Last year we ditched the 454ci V8 gas engine and TH400 three-speed trans in favor of a compound-turbocharged Cummins 5.9L 12Valve diesel and 47RH four-speed with lockup converter transmission. Both the engine and transmission were modified by Powerdriven Diesel for towing duty and hot rod fun.
It didn't take long to destroy the stock Dana 70 rear axle. A couple of burnouts was really all that was required to send the spider gears in the differential crying to their mama. Determined the make lemonade out of this lemon, we contacted the folks at Quick Performance for an upgrade.
www.quickperformance.com/
The team suggest using the axle out of a late-model Chevy truck, which originally was supplied to GM by American Axle & Manufacturing. The axle not only comes with disc brakes but also a larger 11.5-inch diameter ring gear, which dwarfs the Dana 70's 10.5 inch gear. Right out of the gate this is a better axle for the kind of abuse the Ramp Truck endures, but Quick Performance further improved it by swapping out the 3.73:1 ring and pinion gears for an ever higher 3.42:1 gear ratio. Our Cummins certainly would appreciate the lower rpm and higher wheel speed that this ratio would force it to operate in. The stock open differential was also replaced with a Detroit Trutrac limited-slip differential for two wheel peels!
Here's where things get even more exciting; the new axle came out of a single rear wheel truck. This meant that our stock 16-inch dually wheels wouldn't fit. Also, 17s wouldn't go on either. After many hours of trial and error fitment we stumbled upon a combination of 19.5 wheels and 1/4-inch spacers, which fit the truck and provided a more modern look. Check out the video to see how we made dually wheels fit a single wheel axle as well as tips for setting your pinion angle correctly.

Fun fact, because of the ujoint physics, the driveshaft speed actually oscillates and speeds up then slows down twice during one rotation. The reason why driveline angle is important is because when the angle is roughly corresponding at both ends, the effect cancels out each others rotational vibration. However when a ujoint is trying to go a different speed than the other, it binds and sends a shock through the driveline, causing the vibration. You can google how to set correct pinion angle due to how fast your driveshaft needs to rotate, but it has to be at least 1° so the ujoint needle bearing endcaps do not seize. And thats part of tech school if you are interested so i recommend you research it.

They are comfortable and sound great. While it isn't legal to drive with bluetooth in both ears, they are less obvious than ear muffs and look like any blue tooth in a single ear. The C10 isn't a mini truck, although it may have the same style. It is getting the supercharged corvette engine. And, if it is on Finnegan's Garage, it is bound to be entertaining to watch the build!

Shouldn't be reusing U-bolts. Threads aren't made the same as a normal bolt and are more likely to come loose.
@FinnegansGarage
@FinnegansGarage 5 лет назад
Alright, school me. Why are they more likely to come loose? After one use are they more likely to stretch or something? I'm serious, I'm here to learn, too. :)
@ShainAndrews
@ShainAndrews 5 лет назад
Threads are made by cutting or deformation... just like every other thread. The risk is a thread is damaged while in use, then the nut is run over those areas. Is it a best practice to reuse? Probably not. Do they get reused? All the time.
@arcticscrap4972
@arcticscrap4972 5 лет назад
@Finnegan's Garage The way I had it explained was due to the fact that the u-bolts are rolled thread instead of cut[due to their shape maybe??]. It was something I was told in millwright school. People reuse them all the time but it seems like cheap insurance, especially with a beast of a Cummins. I found a couple links here. Big fan of your shows!! www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=256363 www.eatondetroitspring.com/reinstalling-ubolts/

@@FinnegansGarage Also, what did yall do about the bottom axle plate? I didn't see a close up of the mount unless I missed it. If the clearance wasn't somehow made up wouldn't the plate have a tendency to move with the pressure of the anti sway, bar in turn putting more pressure on the u bolts? It should be fine, those are some big ass u bolts! I've always "heard" that you should never reuse u bolts. A quick google search turns up lots of people who have without problems.
@CGT80
@CGT80 5 лет назад
@@arcticscrap4972 I have heard that rolled threads are stronger than a cut thread, as the latter removes material and the former does not. I'm no expert on it. As far as reusing U bolts, I have always heard not to do that, but wasn't given a decent explanation as to why they wouldn't hold up.

Gonna swap the new truck to the diesel? Since it's pretty much done. Or is the new one too mint
@Real_Mechanic87
@Real_Mechanic87 5 лет назад
Serious question: Why do you believe it needs to be diesel swapped? I mean, it's a perfectly fine, running-and-driving truck. Yeah, it's getting 5.6mpg but it's possible to raise that and it wouldn't be nearly as invasive as replacing the engine.
@Nathan-uy6wf

A diesel really is the best solution for trucks this size and weight, and I don't even like diesels in general. I do really like the old Detroit Diesel two strokes though, that would make an epic conversion though probably not so great for mileage.

@streetdemon8405
@streetdemon8405 5 лет назад
curious as to why you decided to re-use the stock u-bolts? I always been told that u-bolts need to be replaced because after they have been torqued the threads are rolled, not cut. Because of this the threads are distorted when torqued. This distortion will not allow the torqued to be maintained when the nuts are loosened then retightened.
@myassizitchy
@myassizitchy 5 лет назад
As long as they're not stripped or stretched bad I've always reused ubolts. They're not head bolts or anything, not that critical .I've never actually torqued any u bolts EVER...I just tighten em good but not over tighten..and I've done cars, trucks and a hellova lotta 18 wheelers that way and never had one single problem

It may be a GM truck, but generally the Cummins is an easier engine to swap into things. Parts are far more readily available and it’s far easier to tune. Plus I don’t think of them as dodge motors. They are Cummins motors, made for dodge.
