Finnegan's Garage Ep.69: How Heavy is This Turbo Hemi?

I needed a good way to mount the fuel cells in my drag boat without drilling holes into the bottom of the boat hull. I decided to build some aluminum mounts and then bond them to the hull using fiberglass mat, fiberglass cloth, fiberglas resin, and an epoxy product. The end result was strong and durable and I'm one step closer to driving this twin-turbo Hemi on the lake. It's gonna be an awesome summer!

No warm bath! I worked in a fiberglass plant, weaving that fiberglass cloth for 3 years. Warm water will open your pores and let the fiberglass go in further. Take a cold shower.

Never seen polyester and expoxy resin used/set at the same time... but hey, it worked! For a glass matt patch that small you could have gone kevlar for not much more $$$$. Kevlar takes the hits better and is stronger - stronger than carbon fibre (Common misnomer). Carbon fibre is stiffer, kevlar has a higher breaking point. Fun fact for the day.

A tip for fiberglass making you itch, a roll of gaff tape gently pressed on to the areas itching will remove the fiberglass strands when removed gently.

Quick tip from a boat builder, if you don't like the tickle dust from fibreglass rub baby powder in to your skin. you will look like Casper the ghost but you won't itch as the powder gets into your skin pours and blocks most of the glass fibres. Also if you drink 7/10 beers after your to drunk to feel it( works down under)

Just an FYI: Vibrational analysis shows that split-lock washers actually do the exact opposite of what they're purported to do. Fasteners subjected to vibration loosen significantly quicker when a split-lock washer is used. That may be why the bolts fell out of the sway-bar mounts on your El-Camino several episodes back. I hope this helps!

I have done something similar with setting aluminum plates into carbon fiber to use as a mount. On the off-chance you see this, here's a tip: We would tap the holes in the plates and not put in studs before laying up carbon (wet layup, same process as with the fiberglass but black and the splinters are worse). To keep the epoxy out of the holes, wrap a throw-away bolt in teflon tape and thread it in; you can then add the fiber the same as you show, but once it cures just take out the bolt (it isn't stuck because of the teflon tape) and sand the area flat - that way you don't have to dremel around all the studs sticking up, you can get a nice flat surface, then put in the studs or bolts. Thanks for making these videos! I'm not building a boat but still enjoy this sort of thing.

Like the mount idea, but I'd have to do larger plates so I could put an extra set or two of studs for when something strips the first set. Split lock washers do zero to lock anything, just for looks or to use up some stud if to long. Nord-lock washers really work and the new style are for soft materials with some flex, so get those.
@joedowding4057
@joedowding4057 5 лет назад
This. Split lockwashers are equivalent to flatwashers for locking. If you don't want it to turn, safety wire it. See page 9. ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19900009424.pdf

I put IMCO stainless off-the-shelf gunnel tanks in an old 19' Kona I had years ago. What a PITA that was, trying to fit the tank, filler neck and hose into the gunnel w/o trimming it and screwing up the look. It had factory fiberglass tanks that filled the bilge of the damn thing the first time I backed it down a ramp. Didn't drive the thing for 2-3 months after I bought it. It was still fun, but not that fast. Maybe 65-68 mph with a tunnel ram, solid roller 460, angle iron loader, and a Jacuzzi 12WJ I believe it was. Looked/sounded badass though, way cooler to me than my first, a Taylor SS done up disco style, LOL!

Use some temporary hold fabric spray adhesive, (from the fabric store) for the cut lines on the fiberglass/ carbon cloth. It helps reduce the annoying "frayed edges" so you don't loose your mind with the stray glass strands. Makes for a neater finished project. Unless if you don't see them, like under a fuel tank or something...

Great video as usual. Excellent work on the tank mounts. One tip I would offer is the way you used the punch tends to dull the edge. It was correct to back the material being cut with wood, but you cut across the grain of the wood. Cutting the wood fibers will dull the edge. If you use the end grain of a 4x4, the punch cutting edge will separate the wood fibers instead of cutting them and it will last longer. Thanks for the work you put into these videos.

Love seeing that Sonny Leonard’s 711ci big block, even if I’m not so into boats... But my interest in them has certainly increased as of late. Between this boat and the one on “PFI Speed” channel (videos should be easy to find, it’s the only boat they have worked on recently), packing 1000hp turbocharged K24 Honda 4 cylinder power, it’s not as wild looking as “Game Over”, but an impressive piece of engineering all the same... They also run a pretty popular RU-vid channel, maybe the two boats could line up together, in the interest of science of course... Power to weight and all that jive yeah. Lol.

Hey Mike, You might be interested in a modification I made to my engine stands. Just thought about it when I saw you were using similar ones. I made up a custom drip tray that claps to the upright that is the full width and length of the stand. Catches any drips,dropped parts or tools. I have a drain tap from an old bike tank in the corner. Handy to catch cleaning fluid when cleaning down or oil if you drain down. Can't be kicked,stood in or spilled as clamped to the stand. Also makes handy place to put parts when servicing the motor or gearbox.

the tip to getting fiber glass of any kind out of your skin if you aren't done working for the day and warm water doesn't seem to cut it. wrap your affected area in blue masking tape and rip it off. it will grab the fiberglass but isn't strong enough to rip your arm hair out.

Just my guess but I bet you go to a nylon nut and a stainless steel washer by the time you put a lock washer on their you're only going to have a couple of threads exposed so, my suggestion is stainless steel washer a thin one and a aircraft nut as they're called with the nylon or one that is crimped those are better they don't wear out like the nylon do and there's going to be so much vibration on that boat you're going to need it pal. Love the boat it's going to be the most awesome one on the water. I'll be down there when you get it running so you can let me drive it haha : D

Putting a flat washer under a lock washer defeats the lock washer. The lock washer is designed to bite into the surface of the nut and the material on the opposite side, in this case the flat washer . Which will spin with the nut and not hold and fiberglass is not strong enough to hold the lockwasher. Therefore always use a nyloc nut if you use a flat washer.

it probable doesn't matter on a boat that will spend as little time on the water as this one. The proper way to do hull penetrations on a wood cored hull is drill from the inside a hole larger than the desired final hole(1 1/2" for a 1/2" penetration) just through the inner skin and the core leaving the outer skin intact. Remove the waste in the hole and pack it with fiber reinforced resin(make your own with resin and mat, just stir mat into catalyzed resin until it is a thick gloppy mess or buy "kitty hair" bond from auto parts store) and tape over the hole with masking tap until the resin cures. sand smooth and drill your final hole through the middle. This leave the core completely protected from water and crushing.

1000hp turbocharged K24 Honda engine. That thing is a beast! Would love to see the boats lined up, power to weight would be a big advantage for the PFI tuned boat. Twin turbo 711ci Hemi would be a torque monster though, spinning up that jet propulsion drive would almost have it barely breaking a sweat. It would be interesting to see which come out on top though. There’s so many different physics involved with boats like these, it could be anyone’s race to win I reckon.

@@jrobpat0154 I hate being one of the know-it-alls in the comments. especially since it'll probably be fine. But as you found out it can be a massive mess to fix too. Or even worse and delaminate down the line I guess they where in a hurry and there's not much local for boats. But it's stuff a DIY boater should have on hand really. Amazon is so fast these days itd be there in less than 2 days. You can buy the cabosil filler in a powder and mix it as thick or thin as you want in a epoxy like West System or the Total Boat line from Johnstown. I get cheap plastic icing bags from Amazon for applying it too, they are about the same as ziplocks etc and you can use the decorating tips if needed too.

Baby powder before fiberglass. Fibers won't stick to it. Did it all the time when I was working with insulation.
