I'm not from Finland and this does send shivers down my spine and tears in my eyes. My wife, who passed away a month ago, was born in Finland (Kuopio) and came to the USA at the age of seven. At age twelve she and her Finnish mother became naturalized American citizens. Fifty years later, Finland and the USA offered dual Finnish-American citizenship to any Finnish-Americans whose parents had been born in Finland. (The Cold War was over, so Finnish neutrality was no longer an obstacle.) I will never forget the day when she received the letter announcing her new dual citizenship. The tears just flowed, tears of joy. It meant so much to her.
That this isn't Finlands national anthem is an absolute crime. After all you've been through with them, you can't let Russia have a better anthem than you. And this would knock not only them but every other nation on earth out of the park. Stunning, heavenly, superlative.
@@tamautriainen and few chose to have this awful "Maamme" as our national anthem. Really don't get why this haven't changed yet. There has been movements but those have failed.
What an absolutely beautiful piece of music. I have just heard it for the first time and I'm sitting with tears rolling down my face. All love and strength to Finland!! ♥️♥️🇫🇮🇫🇮
These are the original Finnish lyrics. It's been redone in English with at least two sets of lyrics: "Be Still My Soul" and "This Is My Song". Powerful lyrics in all three versions, you can find many performances of all of them on RU-vid. Interestingly, the "Be Still My Soul" lyrics are from a poem written in 1752. Sibelius didn't compose the melody until 1900. "This Is My Song" was written to this melody and also predates the Finnish lyrics: Sibelius originally wrote this as an instrumental piece. The Finnish lyrics wouldn't have gone over so well with the authorities in 1900, since Finland was still part of Russia at that time. 😉
@@lennartbjorksten707 Thank you for your lovely reply. ❤️ I know a little of Sibelius, the Karelia Suite, the violin concerto and I thought I knew Finlandia until I heard these beautiful words in Finnish with English subtitles and the sentiment behind them , especially with the threat your country at that time. That's what brought me to tears. All Love and Strength to Finland. Much Love from London 🇬🇧 🇫🇮
I have Croatian and Bosniak ancestors, but I absolutely love this hymn and teared up listening to this and reading along with it, the lyrics are poetry, thank you to the people of Finland for writing this, with love from your southern neighbors.
As a french guy, I'm very impressed that a country that has existed for 100 years has managed to compose one of the most beautiful melodies on Earth just like that. Congrats finns!
There is an unspoken history of Finnish people in which Swedes and Russians play a big role, basically we were slaughtered and enslaved by them for thousands of years. Of those 2 countries, only the other one keeps on oppressing and stealing from our people. Make a wild guess which country it is.
@@ristuksenvittu Like politics and geopolitics in all countries in regard to their home history and their neighbours, nothings is whote or black, or Red or White as to Finland. It has been like that since we climbed down from the trees and stood up, and it always will be like that until we blow up the earth.
When I was young I went to church every sunday morning. We would sing many christian songs, but sometimes we sang a song with this melody and Dutch christian lyrics (a translation of 'We Rest on Thee'). I didn't really love much of the melodies of the songs, but when this song came by I would sing it loudly and was very moved by it. Later I found out it was written by a great classical composer and it was even a national song of Finland. Now I'll pass by this tune once a week or so. Love from the Netherlands.
I am so happy to hear this song's melody can stand on its own, with it having very sentimental lyrics to me and other finns. But its not actually our national anthem. I whish it was, but alas its the another beautiful song of maamme.
A better, more word for word translation. O Finland, look, your day will dawn The threat of night has already been banished away And the morning’s lark in brightness plays Like the sky itself was playing The powers of night are conquered by the morning’s brightness Your day will dawn, O birthland O rise, Finland, raise high Your head wreathed in great memories O rise, Finland, you showed the world That you banished slavery And didn’t bend under the oppression Your morning has begun, birthland
your translation might be more word for word, indeed, but the idea is not to translate it exactly as it is, but to bring the same, poetic feel to it. that's why i think the translation in the video is actually the best one i've seen, because the use of older english and certain phrase structures bring an atmosphere suitable for the context of the hymn. your translation is also super good, just throwing in an opinion! :)
As a Lancastrian from TODMORDEN, I always had a great affection for the Music of Sibelius • Am 74 Years Old and when I was 14-15 used to leave watching Cricket to listen to Sibelius!!! Thanks very much for your nice words. I have been in Germany couple times and it's nice country too. Best wishes to you also. As European citizen, I hope someone takes Putin out and Europe will be in peace again. I am 54 and first time in my life I am little concerned, cause Russians might come to Finland. Good thing that we joined to NATO 👍
Finlandia hymnillä on minuun kyllä syvä vaikutus. Aina sen kuullessa huomaa, kuinka keho rupeaa reagoimaan eri tavalla. Keho jännittyy, hengitys muutttuu pinnalliseksi ja syke nousee. Ja joka kerta, kyynel valuu silmäkulmasta. Ainoa teos, jolla on itseeni tällainen vaikutus. Kerrassaan upean kuuloinen.
@@Miro.A.Mursu- Itselle sanoituksesta tulee enemmän mieleen sanoituksen aikana vallitsevat tuntemukset kansassa.

This should be the official national anthem of Finland instead of the current German papal march written by a German. This brings a tear to every Finns' eye. This is the true spirit of the Finns.
I dont think you know what you are talking about. Both songs are written by Finns. Both Swedish speaking. Finlandia by Sibelius and Vårt land by Runeberg. Vårt land (Maamme) is the current National Anthem. Jag tror int du riktigt vet vad du talar om..
It would be too much superior to anything else as a national anthem, and the rest of the world would be embarrassed every time it was played. We have to pull our punches quite a bit just to be tactful 😉
Very country should read these beautiful and wonderful words to this anthem. It is expiring. When the world is free again, we intend to visit your wonder courageous country.
When I was 18, I had the great privilege of singing Finlandia in the Finnish language conducted by a wonderful Native whose name I have forgotten. It was held in Nelson NZ and was the highlight of The New Zealand school of Choral conducting around 1988 (give or take a year). Does anyone remember this? We stayed in the Nurses hostel. I would love to know what this conductors name was.
Oh Finland, look, your day is coming The threat of the night banished is already gone And in the brightness of the morning Chiuru calls As if the roof of heaven itself was ringing The powers of the night, the light of the morning is already winning My day is coming, O land of my birth Oh get up, Finland, get up high Head wreathed in great memories Oh stand up, Finland, you showed the world That you banished slavery And that you didn't bend under the oppression The morning has begun, land of birth Something like this. "Used google translator, and it goes pretty much like this"
That translation doesnt give credit to the original finnish lyrics. Made my eyes wet. We finns were under swedish and soviet/tsar rule so long time. Obressed and used. They took our young men to fight their imperial wars... But in the dawn of 20th century we broke free from those chains. Forever gratefull to my grandparents who made this all reality and build this country to one of the best in the world!
Thank you, every single veteran who have fought for our freedom, future and families! If I’d just knew your names and everyone of you would be still alive, I would be more than happy to say thank you personally. Thank you, again! ~Your friendly Finnish guy
PS Only this is not the national anthem. It says wrong in the describition. But many would like this one to be! (It's like an inofficial national anthem)
The Finnish national anthem is Maamme (Our country) by Fredrik Pacius. "Finlandia" by Jean Sibelius is a symphonical poem from 1900 which got its lyrics in the 1940s. It is also very much loved by the Finnish people and perhaps, therefore, often mistakenly thought to be the national anthem of the country.
This Hymni truly hits the heart strings us Finns are a quiet and serious people but this song brings tears to every Finn! Thats why German and Finnish people are so connected on a deep level when the soviets were knocking at our border not a SINGLE allied country came to help us only 1 country answered the call and it was GERMANY!
Yes well we helped with 8000 men and aloth of ammo. But when i say we (swedish), i wasnt yet borned and all my suku lived in jyväskylä. They where finnish. From what i know about history, swedish swedish/finns saved these northern parts (oulu, kemi, torneå, rovaniemi from getting overtaken by russia. Well germans burned down aloth of places....but its russias fault it had to be that way.
What non-Finnish speakers don't really understand how beautifully weaved these lyrics are. The meanings and choices made to convey its message is exceptionally profound. As a singing language, Finnish is very stoic and strong, holding meanings of many whole sentences in just few words. It speaks less, but with power and stance. It's proud and unwavering. For all you, who wish to learn Finnish, I encourage you to learn it and hopefully you experience the same we natives do with this language. With all its beauty, humor and of course, Finlandia hymn, in its form most grandeur.
As a Finn, must say that this one is peace of religion, art, courage, and way more. Thank you for this. That´s the reason, why breath Finnished air! Plot twist: Our National Anthem is originally from Estonia! ;)
It is our national song, not national anthem.
I am 14% Finnish and this brings tears to my eyes when I listen to it. This should definitely be the anthem of Finland. This is the finest of Jean Sibelius works. ☺😊 And happy belated 100th birthday Finland.
Makes sense to be the new anthem since Estonia already has the same. We adopted it upon gaining independence in 1917 while Estonia adopted it in 1922 (three years after gaining independence). We had it first but changing to Finlandia makes sense.
yeah the forests at summer are beautiful but otherwise horrible land, practically full of swamps, mosquitos if not city area and hellish winters...i know im finnish myself
Some years ago I answered to a similar comment by one man of part-Finnish ancestry by these words that, I believe, he found of some help. If such blood runs in your veins and you a thought of a boat gliding along waves of serene lake rouses you, if you can find yourself at home in a thought of silent loneliness of snow-covered, sleeping landscape waiting for spring in cold stillness - or the sizzling stones of hot sauna giving you pause for thoughts only heard in such silence - then there is in you all the parts of a Finn that matter. Find that part in you, and take your heart & sword there. You will find your way to home if you follow the Polar star and birch tree. Tervetuloa kotiin.
Well no matter on what is this the national anthem or not but could be ;-) much more beautiful and we could maybe change this to this beautiful composition of Sibelius like this :-)
Just for your knowledge... Finnish national anthem is called Maamme laulu ( Our Country ) Finlandia hymn by Jean Sibelius triggered a national uprising among artists, politicians and common people and gave us identity. Finlandia hymn as first performed as early as 1899 and was forbidden by russians .
It is a crime that this isnt the official anthem. Even though everybody knows and agrees, that in turth and reality, it already is. Its almost like more than just the anthem, because it is played in the most important occasions instead of the maamme.
It's not. It's the most beautiful hymn in the world and should not be stained by some drunkards singing along in hockey tournaments. So please, don't change the current anthem. This one is for very special occasions.
@@Sklubayy I think its a very special country, and deserves this played as a national anthem. This commands the appereciation about the truth of our country
