I’m 67 years old. I love witnessing young people discovering past music that was iconic in the day. So fun. This song I have pinned as my oldest son’s theme song of life. 😂
Styx are ridiculously talented, there were actually 3 vocalists in the band, but Dennis and Tommy were the most prolific. Never let Tommy’s little baby face fool ya. Great singer and guitarist.
"Crystal Ball is my 3rd favorite Styx track. Ever since I was a teenager, "CB" has held a special place in my heart. It was my 'go to' tune whenever life wasn't going so well, {which was often}...
I’ve known Tommy Shaw for 32 years now. We met in 1990 through a mutual friend and we wrote the song “keeping me alive“ together. When I met Tommy STYX had broken up years earlier and he embarked on a solo career which was short-lived. In 1991 he started the project Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent and Jack blades from night Ranger I forget the drummers name he was a young guy and really amazing. The only thing that’s bigger than Tommy’s talent is his humanity. He is truly one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. I’ve seen him do things for complete strangers even show up at someone’s wedding that he only met once to play a song for them. 🕊❤️🎼
I just saw Styx & REO Speedwagon in concert last month & both KILLED IT!!!! It was truly amazing at their age they perform at such a level. It was like singing all my childhood songs that I normally sing in my car alone w/ 20,000 other people!! Great band!!!!
Yes, I agree that STYX had a lot of great songs! I am 60 years old and grew up with STYX and REO, but to be honest, STYX is not truly STYX without Dennis’ amazing voice!
Those “plastic tubes” you are referring to with the drums are called Octobans . They are melodically tuned in sets of eight (hence the name) and they are also referred to as “tube toms.” They have a unique sound similar to a regular tom tom but higher pitched.
This lead singer is Tommy Shaw. Tommy later formed Damn Yankees with Jack Blades of Night Ranger, Ted Nugent of The Amboy Dukes, and drummer Michael Cartellone of Lynyrd Skynyrd. I saw them in 1976 and it was the loudest concert I ever saw! Tommy did something interesting: He came into the spotlight & introduced a song, he had written, before he became successful and was down & out. It was called "Crytal Ball" and revealed his concerns about his unknown future. This is a very emotional and moving song, and still gives me goosebumps. Please react to Crytal Ball.
I didn't know about the drummer being from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Another cool band that Jack Blades is in is Revolution Saints. Also Doug Aldridge of Whitesnake, along with Deen Castronovo that was in Journey for years are in it. He sounds like Steve Perry, too, but with his own sound. It's a great sounding band. I really like the song, "Light In The Dark".
Great react Jay and Amber. Styx is so underrated - why they aren't in the Rock Hall makes no sense. If you haven't seen it, check out Styx playing live with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra. The kids add an amazing element to Styx's songs. The band obviously loved it, and the young musicians were inspired and excited to be playing with Tommy and the boys.
Lead singer Tommy Shaw is similar to Joe Walsh and the Eagles. Once they joined their respective bands any new easy listening songs suddenly took a back seat to pure rock & roll. As usual a great choice. 👍👍❣️
Ah, my favorite band in high school. Love them. Tommy Shaw is the lead singer in this one. This whole album, Paradise Theater, is one of their better ones.
Fun fact. Dennis DeYoung was a public school music teacher before Styx secured a record deal. Also, Babe was a huge hit when my hubby and I began dating back in high school. It’s still our song to this day❤️❤️
Tommy Shaw is singing lead on this one.You should react to Tommy Shaws other band Damn Yankees. It has Ted Nugent and Jack Blades(Night Ranger) in the band and they have some great songs. You would love the songs Come again and High Enough
Don’t forget “Silence is Broken” and “Where You Goin’ Now”! Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades paired up as well and had a couple hits, though I admit I’m blanking on what they were at this point. But ABSOLUTELY check out Damn Yankees!
Definitely one of my favorite Styx songs. I think this make five Styx songs you've done, and you've only scratched the surface. "Lady" is a classic from their early years, as is "Blue Collar Man". From their 80s discography you can react to "The Best of Times", "Don't Let It End", or "Show Me the Way". You can also branch off if you like and do some Styx members' solo stuff, like Dennis DeYoung's "Desert Moon" or Tommy Shaw's "Girls With Guns". BTW, it was Dennis who did the lead vocals on most of the songs you've reacted to... but it was Tommy this time.
And Tommy Shaw's "What If (Remo's Theme)", which was the theme song from the movie "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins" - a fun movie, but didn't did well at the box office. It was supposed to be the first in a series of movies based on the long running book series "The Destroyer" by Warren Murphy. Remo is a cop that was framed and sentenced to death. His death is faked and he is trained as an assassin for a secret government organization. Anyway, I digress. The song was great.
Styx was really two bands in one --- the Dennis DeYoung version and the Tommy Shaw version depending on who wrote and sang a particular piece. For more of the Tommy Shaw version listen to Fooling Yourself, Renegade, Blue Collar Man and Boat on the River.
This song takes me back to cruising the strip with my friends and hanging out! I do wish you guys could have experienced the 80's. It was the BEST time to be a teenager. There's never been another decade with such a vast array of different musical instruments and synth beats that is now iconic. I hope that with discovering this music now you guys get a feel for what the 80's were about and how much fun was had by those of us who experienced it first hand. ❤
From this album..."Rockin' The Paradise" & "The Best Of Times" are musts, and were the other big hits from the album, but I also love "Lonely People". Other Styx songs: "Show Me The Way", "Don't Let It End", "Blue Collar Man", "Lady", and "Suite Madame Blue" are also amazing. Tommy Shaw is the vocalist on this one.
This was posted on social media a lot when Covid hit and we were all shut down and home. A humorous way of dealing with the crisis. This is one of my favorite Styx songs!
Styx Live is PHENOMENAL. Sounds straight out of the booth and the showman ship I've only seen matched by Weird Al, and the audience involvement only rivaled by Green Day. Such a fun show.
The very Original Band after John Curulewski ( former vocals/guitars) Dennis DeYoung(Keyboards/Lead Vocals) James Young(Lead Guitat/Vocals) Chuck Panazzo (bass guitars) and brother John Panazzo (Drums). Tommy Shaw (vocals/guitars) joined the band after John Curulewski left. In this Video you have Tommy Shaw (guitar) singing. Dennis Deyoung (keyboards) James "JY" Young (Lead Guitar) Chuck Panazzo (bass) and his brother John Panazzo (Drums)(RIP PASSED AWAY). YOU NEED TO REVIEW "SUITE MADAME BLUE" Which is about the USAs rise and impending fall.more songs "Paradise Theater" about Chicagos Paradise Theater"Half Penney two Penny" about greed and money"Grand Illusion" about how TV and magazines give a fake idea about living "Cystal ball" "Best of Times"
"The Best of Times" is one of their best songs and one of their biggest hits. Dennis DeYoung sings that song and it's such a pretty song. It came out in 1981, the same year as this song. "The Best of Times" would be great to review and I hope they do review it.
You have to watch the whole video of Styx live with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra and Chorus of Cleveland and I guarantee you will fall in love with Styx
Here's a reak kick-ass track that nobody ever reacts to - "Queen of Spades" - performed live by the band after reforming with a new keyboardist (Lawrence Gowan), bassist (Ricky Phillips), and drummer (Todd Sucherman), without losing a step: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6yhOY0r-6R4.html
The "tube" drums are know as "Octobans". Typically you would see a setup of 8 octobans used in a full octave. Pink Floyd uses them in the beginning of the song "Time".
Great band! My all time favorite by this group is 'Come Sail Away', also 'Babe', 'Blue Collar Man,' 'Lorelie' (which I think you've already heard, not sure" and many more.
Check out Best of Times and Fooling Yourself. If you want to hear something heavier, listen to Miss America, which is song by the other guitarist James Young. My parents loved Styx. When I was born my mother screamed out “It’s a Miss America” when doctors told her it was a girl. My mom was referring to that song. LOL.
My favorite group ever! This is a great song! They are a deep hole! Check out the songs Grand Illusion, Crystal Ball and Little Suzie! Tommy Shaw is singing this song!
I remember seeing this video on MTV when it first went on the air. As a little kid, I thought it was hilarious! This is one of my mom’s favorite bands so I grew up on Styx. The two other bands she couldn’t get enough of were Foreigner and Journey. I grew up listening to many different genres of music but rock from the early 80’s was my mom’s JAM! 😂 Great video, you two! 🥰
Let's not forget Kansas! When someone asks about "the oldies" I say all 4 of these band names! My "oldies" anyway...they all hit when I was a teen. Boston, Bon Jovi, and Fleetwood Mac all get honorable mentions too
Love Styx... was a staple in my teen/20s years. You should really listen to their song "Foolin' Yourself" with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra of Cleveland. To me, their music is perfect for an orchestral arrangement. (FYI: It's 8:20 long.) Enjoyed your reaction to this!
The drummer in this video is John Panozzo and he is Rockin' In Paradise now, but answering your question, the long acrylic drums are called Dragon Drums. Much like Octobans, but cut longer. They sound amazing on Castle Walls off the Grand Illusion record. You can also see them on the Borrowed Time video.
Love this song. From 1981, their only Top 10 that Tommy Shaw wrote and sang on. Guitarist J.Y. Young also sings lead on a few songs, including Snowblind. Dennis DeYoung parted ways with the band for good in 1999. Lawrence Gowan joined and took over Dennis' vocal parts and he remains with them today.
Lawrence Gowan, 🇨🇦, who had his own career before joining Styx and they let him do some of his own songs that were hits here in 🇨🇦!! Or at least they do when they tour 🇨🇦!!! 😂😂😂
"Suite Madame Blue" is a must. Love to see you do all of the "Paradise Theater" album from 1981, but that doesn't seem to be your thing. What you're doing is great! Love it!
This is one of the best performances I've ever seen in concert! Tommy Shaw was killing it when he did this song. And hey, he lived in the next town over, Niles MI, around the early 80's. (You also heard Tommy sing lead on Renegade)
I didn't know that he had a home in Michigan! Is that how he and Ted got together? I grew up in Clarkston in the late 70s and 80s. Bob Seger had a home there then.
@@theresatrapp4532 I don't know how they got together, but I'm glad they did. 😁 Yeah, he had a place in Niles, all those years ago. lol. Bob Seger, now there's a singer!
Hey you two, that would be Tommy Shaw singing lead, but besides him and Dennis DeYoung, the other guitarist, James Young (no relation), also sings some songs and is also a fantastic guitarist in his own right.
Tommy Shaw is singing this song as well as Renegade! I have a guitar pick from Tommy Shaw. Was front and center on their Paradise Theatre tour! Outstanding band! Dennis is Absolutely one of the greats! His voice is one of the best! You should check out: Crystal Ball(Tommy)(One of my most favorite songs of All time!) also, Suite Madame Blue(Dennis)Lady, Fooling Yourself, The Best of Times and Blue Collar Man, to name a few..
Styx is one of those bands where multiple members could be the "front man" depending on which song you're listening to. This happened a lot in the 70's. The ultimate example would be Fleetwood Mac, but it was all over the place back then. In terms of their next biggest song you haven't done yet, that'd be "Blue Collar Man."
That's Tommy Shaw singing. For the next one, try "Fooling Yourself" or "Boat on the River". In 'Boat on the River' video, I was pleasantly surprised to see them play an accordion and a mandolin. It sounds awesome.
Ok so the guy singing is Tommy Shaw who started and Super group with the singer from Night Ranger and Ted Nugget called “Damn Yankees “ !!! Really I know you will love it!! They came out in the 90s!! High Enough Come Again Mystified Damn Yankees Tell Me How you Want It
Paradise Theater and Grand Illusion are my favorite Styx albums. Paradise is great beginning to end! FyI if you also want to hear some of James Young’s lead singing, then react to “Snowblind” from this album, and Miss America from Grand Illusion.
@@karowak1 and yet, the current lineup plays Mr Roboto in concert. I didn't hate the song, I think it might have been pushing the limits as far as experimentation. But for me, no Dennis - no Styx..
"Crystal Ball" (live versions best IMO, features 12-string acoustic, keys solo, guitar solo, a deceptively heavy drop, and over the years you hear the tightened up album version, more loose/heavy wall of sound in the 80s - early 00s, then more modern tour versions a focus on the musicality of it that's more restrained but you hear the 3- and 4-part harmonies better) "Lorelei" or "Sing For the Day" (more 'sing-songy' and upbeat) "Suite: Madame Blue" (great vocals by Dennis DeYoung in this) "Lights" (nice harmonies and shows off that "Prog" sound a lot)
Awesome song I love it! The cool thing is that my wife just saw them live in Nashville Monday night! They still got, loud and proud! Thanks for all your hard work and keeping great music alive.
Dennis De Young was the original member of Styx and Tommy Shaw came along later, he is the one singing this song along with many others. Dennis is no longer with the group and I believe he is still touring with his own group, not one hundred percent sure. I have seen them twice. August Zadta does the Tommy Shaw songs and does a really good job. Styx tours still with a new keyboards play and he does all the of De Young's songs and also does a really good job. I have seen them twice as well. I've been a huge Styx since I first heard them, I think back in 75. I've seen the original group once only but it was a great show. You really should check out the newer versions of the groups, both very solid. I saw the Dennis De Young band before the pandemic, I think was around 73 and man his pipes were as strong as ever check both groups out with their additions. Styx still has Tommy and James Young.
About six years ago I saw Dennis Deyoung live in Los Angeles. It was a small venue and the concert was being recorded. Dennis had decided that times were tough and asked that all tickets be sold for $5 a piece! He is a class act.
Love to see you two rocking to Styx. Several other songs that I recommend, "Grand Illusion", "Suite Madam Blue", "Rockin' The Paradise", "Best of Times", and "Blue Collar Man".
Styx is a great band with two amazing vocalists: Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung! They have so many great songs to choose from, and I recommend you check out these next: Guitarist Tommy Shaw sang lead on "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", and "Sing For The Day". Keyboard player Dennis DeYoung sang lead on "Lady" and "The Grand Illusion".
Actually they have 3 amazing vocalist . The other guitarist James Young also does lead on some songs like Miss America from THe Grand Illusion and Half Penny-Two Penny from Paradise Theater.
Styx was one of my favorite bands. I loved the mister Roboto concert. The whole paradise theater album is great. It was also “holographic”. I still have the album from the early 80s. Pieces of 8 was another great album.
Back in 2017 Styx played at our local “Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally” here in Binghamton, NY. After the concert the band members came to the club where my boyfriend’s band was playing. Needless to say they sat in with his band (“Splash”) and jammed. They did Their hit Renegade it was very memorable and yes the band members were great guys! Good times!
Just saw Styx last night in concert and can happily report that Tommy Shaw still sounds amazing. He and James Young’s guitar playing was outstanding as well. Definitely worth seeing if you have the chance.
FYI- The story behind "Babe" was that it was NOT to be recorded by /for STYX. Dennis wrote it for his wife. On her birthday, he performed it to her at a private party. He was badgered into recording it after the band agreed it was too good not to. The 'wandering;' keyboard intro was actually DeYoung playing around on a new electronic piano which he'd never tried before. He didn't know recording had begun. Crazy.
If you could see them in concert, the level of audience involvement is unmatched by any band playing today. I think you can still see these guys playng smaller venues. There is a concert video that aired on PBS about 8 or 10 years ago. If you can find it, you'll see what I'm talking about. These former fans showed up with their children and their families to sing along with these guys. I absolutely love them. There will never be another STYX.
Styx was my first convert and set a standard for all concerts that follow. It was the Kilroy Was Here Tour. High standard and top three all time fave bands for this girl. Tommy Shaw was a teenage heartthrob to me. That set another standard to me!
