I'd guess that nearly all firearms holders would never seek any help for mental issues. I'm sure your certificates would be revoked immediately for getting yourself the correct help.
To be honest, based on a relative's experience and speaking to an experienced firearms officer myself, theyre more concerned about attempts to cover up a mental health issue. That said, if you suffered from serious ongoing issues it would be a real problem. Theyre not that concerned about mild or short term depression following things such as a bereavement or losing your job.
@@prb9013 My experience with a Firearms Officer is that generally doesnt want the public owning Firearms & anyone with a past history of mental illness is more prone for that condition to return at some point.
Oh Boy.... So if you’re depressed, your only choice for suicide is a gun? Tell that to the Japanese. Diagnosed with a terminal illness? Sorry, but you’ll either have to suffer until the bitter end, or leap out of a window. Government is never the solution. Thanks for sharing this, Callum. It’s depressing as hell, but thanks.
The anti gun sentiment in the NHS and biased views of medical professionals interpreting records is going to be a major issue in getting an application through. GPs in the main are not qualified in mental health issues and legally may not even be able to complete. Forcing applicants to fill out these forms could also lead to direct descrimination and potentially be unlawful under the equality act 2010.
As mentioned in the form the GP is not allowed to give an opinion but he is just ticking the boxes of which illnesses someone has. He is not saying this person is not allowed to shoot a gun. But something like this person had a depression in 2014 and used antidepressants for a year and currently he is not showing sings of depression. So purely the facts and no interpretations. I think the GP is perfectly able to do that.
I applied for mine in mid 2017, granted early 2018. My surgery didn't charge for the service but they did want me to come in and talk to them about it since my GP didn't know me very well. Seemed fair enough and they were very quick with it.
You do know that this is not actually law and people acquiescing to these demands will ensure that it will become law. For me, thumbs down for this video.
Used shotgun medicals myself gained my medical records, took a week to get them sent them too shotgun medicals had my certificate within that same week, carnt recommend them enough.
I had to do this on my last renewal 18 months ago. My GP told me 3-6 weeks (ended up being 4), but the police only give you a 21 day window to get it to them after the application, so you end up playing a game of hedging your bets by not sending off your license too soon (or the force bin you GP letter) and not too late (so the force doesn’t bin your application after the 21 day window expires). Then once you send it off you have to keep chasing both of them otherwise you are basically relying on two civil servants working as a team which ain’t going to happen. In the end I discovered my ‘letter’ was done my some low level admin pleb who didn’t even bother to sign it, luckily I had insisted they send an email copy and I was able to argue with my force that the email address was proof enough that it had come from the GP, otherwise I would have had to go through the whole thing again. It’s probably much worse now due to Covid so assume absolute incompetence and chase it constantly - best of luck!!
I self harmed briefly in 2010 and received a diagnosis of mild depression in 2018... am now planning to apply for an SGC having tried clay pigeon shooting... so this is bloody useful... many thanks!
If you want to shoot clays get CPSA membership they can support you with legal aspects of applying for you SGC. If your mental health condition is long term and has chartiristics outlined in the equality act 2010 you may be protected against descrimination when applying for services but you will need to be checked out by a legal professional qualified in this field, if you feel that it will be a problem for you.
I'm not sure if it's different in terms of firearms and shotgun certs, but I just had to complete a GP form for my air weapon cert application in Scotland and the Police Scotland covering letter specifically said that the GP does not have the final call on determining medical fitness , only the Chief Constable. The GP is just providing information and the police will ultimately decide.
By filling these things in they are profiling you did mine last year didn't need one they need to give a reason why you can't have one it is not a necessary condition
Callum it cost me £40 here in Wiltshire . I’ve been shooting since 1993 and this is the first time that I’ve ever been asked for one of these forms with my firearms application , cheeky Ferkers ...
And this form is not valid now legally, as you had to pay £40 for it. The firearms act states that declerations have to be given factually and of individual free will. Since money changed hand it's legitimacy has been curupted!
For renewals in my experience, GP's are not processing this medical proforma citing covid, also they are refusing information requests so that you cannot pass on your medical records to a third party to complete this process, even when its the firearm owners legal obligation to have this form when submitting a renewal and the GP knows that I/you are liable to prosecution, financial loss, or the stress of finding someone or somewhere to store your firearms whilst trying to sort your application out. It has taken me months to get my license renewed and a huge amount of stress, which in my opinion is unwarranted. If we as firearm owners have an obligation to abide by the law then the legal and professional bodies should also make every effort to expedite this process due to the gravity and consequences for us of not complying with these laws. My local firearms unit was very helpful throughout this stressful time but they are policing this legislation not making it! My advice is to be as polite as possible and to not give up..
Also people if you have a pattern of police call out but you have not been charged or arrested you will be refused, thats including domestic violence, or any police criminal investigations. You will be refused if there is a pattern.
Out of the entire application process the medical form was the only bit I had an issue with. My doctor initially sent my form back saying I had anxiety and depression when I've never suffered from either... I'm lucky that the FEO who spoke to me was understanding when I explained this was incorrect. I ended up going in to the doctors and getting an appointment with him to discuss this. I had to get him to complete another form and complete a cover letter saying he was mistaken the first time. Whilst speaking to him he was very anti-gun. The NHS are rife with anti-gun sentiment.
To be fair, looking at it from the NHS point of view, they are the ones who’ll deal with the aftermath of a shooting. It is wrong that they should take a dim view of legit gun owners but we all have our opinions.
What do you expect,I've been a Pharmacist GP surgery prescriber for 10 years, I only known 1 dispenser who shoots clays with full-bore rifles on a boat. No Pharmacist shooters and a Psychiatrist who hates guns, most of them are very demure and intellectual. A Psychiatrist will use a Firearms licence/gun hobby as evidence you're going to blow someones brains out if you have an awkward diagnosis.
@@EnglishShooting I have access to my patient access already. Let's see. If I get desperate, I can go to the same service you've mentioned at any time.
Sir pls if I come from Nigeria to London or USA is there a possibility I can get d license to own guns or firearms and for d purpose of selling fire arms not to abuse it? I want to start a firearms business maybe in London that is d purpose of d license.
@@EnglishShooting no but I want to understand if an immigrant can get the license to not just possess but also to start up the business there. What are d things required to start up a fire arm store for immigrant? But before I apply I ought to have lived in uk for 2 yrs?
Hi.I would like to know if the rules are the same for European citizens with residence,Just let me know because I will be applying soon. Thanks for helping 👍
Did they not check medical records at all before this then? Ive had my fac for one and a half year now but i seem to recall having to write down my GP address?
What the police thought was inappropriate comments on one of his videos. Bit unfortunate really, but when you hold a ticket you hold your tongue, especially on your own you tube channel 🤐🤐🤐
My practice refused on BMA policy grounds. Blatantly said they didnt support private gun ownership. So I requested all my medical records under 2 pieces of legislation, cost me a tenner admin costs, then sent it as a bundle to the Firearms dept. Got my licence no problem.
I heard a rumour that Hampshire licencing were asking FAC holders to provide a shot cartridge case for each of their firearms - seems a bit much - any idea if that is true?
It wasn't mandatory but advised, BASC completely shot down the idea (excuse the pun 😂) saying that due to guns wearing over time it's completely useless.
