I'm not sure what's cooler... the fact that the animators took Jonathan's advice and changed the reload animation, or that they took the time and effort to ask for specific guns to be analysed. The Crytek team are amazing!!!
The Sharps pistol and single shot shotgun with a magazine may have only been suggested because they were running an in-game event with a paid battle pass including those guns as unloackables. But I believe the event is over now, so if it was in fact just trying to show off battle pass rewards, this video came out a little late.
@@Heegaherger when you're "on top of the game" for so long you begin to think you're untouchable. They outsell so many other games year after year they don't see a need to try so hard anymore.
I can't remember if Jonathan covered it in the first video, but I really like how this is one of few games I can think of that shows dented primers for fired revolver rounds and doesn't just go for an all or nothing approach
Yeah, I was about to post a comment how good this review was before I found yours. Jonathan really seems to enjoy himself a bit extra this time and I especially like the shout out to C&Rrsenal, Otias and May some fantastic videos with a lot of research and time put into them.
The devs love the community, a utuber I like mentioned that one of the houses had a chimney but no fireplace so they added a wood stove in the house, super small but cool nonetheless
Here's me posting again, asking you to have him cover Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1 and 2 and covering all the weapons in the game that never made it to service like the MRC rifle and such.
the Devs for Hunt: Showdown are always very interested in accuracy and plausibility for their weapons so I would not be surprised to see the side loader, that was a 1 seconds mention in this video, added in for the Martini Henry.
Awesome video. One point of feedback - Jonathan's video segments interacting with the weapons are very low frame rate / jittery. It unfortunately makes it difficult to visually focus on what features he is pointing out on these weapons. GameSpot should get this man a better camera for recording (really doesn't have to be high end), and look at motion interpolation for the existing content. Edit: judging by the higher quality of some of his other videos - maybe this was an editing issue that can easily be fixed?
best part was when a hard surface modeler asked him to review the pistol and he's spending more time reviewing the animation and VFX than the actual modeling and texturing of the gun
@@TBContent24 there's probably a non-zero chance that he did do a full review of them but was cut for this video. I'd hope that if he did that the critique was sent to the devs. But that's a lot of assumptions
They picked the worst possible example of a scottfield. Idk who chooses what guns to show and how to showcase them, but they are really doing a disservice to these videos.
3 Stages of watching Gamespot's firearms expert reacts videos: 1. Watching because of the games 2. Watching because it's very informative on the weapons 3. Watching because of Jonathan Ferguson, the keeper of firearms and artillery at royal armouries museum in the UK.
And if you'd like to help out the Royal Armouries Museum and continue to support Jonathan's work, check out the links in the description of this video.
I'd love him to see the bulletgrubber animations specifically. And the technique where you hold the fire button to keep from rechambering, so you can reload without losing a round.
Yes, these are good ideas It seems like a no brainer to show him bulletgrubber but I didn’t think of it either lol That’s an interesting oversight, because it’s so cool but also unique to this game. Maybe next time…?
There is absolutely nothing strange about the technique of reloading the bullet after firing a round. If you fire a bolt action gun, your hand is not going to pass the bullet automatically like a robot... A bolt action rifle fires and to pass the next bullet you have to pull the bolt back to eject the empty shell, and there you decide if you want to pass the next bullet by closing the bolt, or if you didn't pull it all the way back the bolt you can place a single new bullet in the chamber to close it and shoot.
@@kykiske321 I'm totally aware of that. However, hunt showdown is one of the only games I have personally played where you can perform this technique. He specifically mentioned enjoying when games, rather than just giving you an animation, allowed you to more finely control the features on a firearm. Therefore, I thought he'd find it interesting that hunt showdown included this feature.
@@kykiske321 most games with bolt actions like the ones in hunt, whenever you reload you do a full reload and magically keep the bullets. In hunt, if you do a partial reload with a bolt action you'll lose 1-2 rounds unless you have bulletgrubber. Losing ammo also happens on the lever action Winchester and Mauser with partial reload unless you have the perk bullet grubber. Where you catch the ammo being ejected and save it
YAAAS! IT"S HERE!!! A little disappointed that we didn't get to the topic of custom ammo, but to actually have the developers make requests?! Awesome! Edit: I was so convinced that he'd call BS on the ambidextrous reload on the dual dolchs, but am pleasantly surprised to hear that is halfway feasible, lol.
Only thing I'd be concerned about with the dolch dual reload like that is potentially denting the case of the rounds you're slamming into each other. Otherwise I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work in theory.
When I saw the C&K with Slugs I was sure we were going to get some Custom Ammo talk but alas that must be the next video Johnathan is doing *hint hint gameSpot*
Watching this video again before the Hunt Christmas update and the rumored addition of the Harston quickloader to the martini henry... Think Jonathan is gonna need to take a look at this one again very soon.
Surprised that the Uppercut was received as just a normal Caldwell Conversion Pistol. It's not. The CC uses normal compact pistol rounds but the Uppercut uses long ammo. Rifle rounds. Theoretically the same stuff you'd put in the sparks or the lebel.
Yep I believe it was based on the walker pistol. It was a basically a horse killer, but it had a nasty habit of exploding if improperly used. Was disappointed it wasn't recognized.
"Nice to see I'm being of some help and not just whinging away on a webcam." But Johnathon, whinging and moaning is a proud, time honored British tradition!
This combines two of my favourite things. A weapon expert sharing his knowledge and Hunt Showdown. Love that the devs reached out as this game shines when it comes to attention to details. Jonathan has, at least to me, the perfect mindset when making these videos. Love it!
4:55 I'm really hoping Jonathan gets to do a video on Receiver 2 someday, because that game is *all* about what he's talking about here. Manually operating every individual action involved in operating a handgun, and even simulating some common malfunctions that you need to know how to actually clear.
Red Orchestra 2 has a MG-42 where, if you shoot it too much too quickly, you can actually manually activate a barrel change for the gun. It looks amazing and I'd love to see a reaction to stuff like that.
I love how genuinely excited he gets about this game lol Crytek's devs are amazingly impressive for being this open to feedback on an already excellent job and the fact that the suggestions got implemented, and that Jonathan got to see it?? 🥺it's all so wholesome lol I hope there's a third part and Jonathan is shown some more skins, and talks about the Vetterli. I love that gun lol
I really like the animations in this game. They just feel, I don't know how else to say it, meaty. Like you actually feel the recoil and carefully go through the reload process. In a lot of games reloading and firing just seems like a mild annoyance but, the detail they put in just gives a lot of character to the gun.
PLEASE check out receiver 2. It has exatly what Jonathan was talking about with actually interacting with the gun like you would in real life. A button for each function etc.
Yeah, the way reciver lets you come up with your own reload system is very cool. But it requires a lot more effort from the player to get good clips as opposed to just pressing the "reload" button and waiting for the animation to finish.
@@dark2023-1lovesoni True, demonstrating advanced gameplay would take some time. But the game does have a "shooting range" mode, so getting a little practice and just demonstrating all the guns and mechanics should be simple enough. (Can also unlock everything from the debug menu to save more time - Press Ctrl + F12 while paused)
Actually, what if they just had Jonathan play reciver himself. That'd probably give him a better chance to examine the way that game handles firearm manipulation.
@@dark2023-1lovesoni Fair point, actually. It might be a decent idea for a special "let's play"-ish episode, if they've got the time and inclination. Receiver is very much one of those games that puts everyone on equal footing at the start anyway, due to the unorthodox controls - Might as well be him learning it :P
As far as the top rear receiver marking on the auto 5, I have several that were among my grandad's duck guns. One of them, from when he shipped them to New Orleans form Belgium in 1922. The 16ga is marked as such in this location. Our current theory is that as this was before FN actually started importing them in 16ga in 1923, the port of Orleans required all non commercial imports to be marked. Given that this one also had an extended magazine tube installed by an official FN smith in Brussels, and the marking lacks the yellow and green gold inlay, we think this was a special request he made to the factory. Granted this is all form 100 year old paperwork, and a highschool level of French....
I made a comment (I'm guessing years ago)on the Alofts video from C&Rsenal that it looked like something from "Hunt: Showdown". Sort of hilarious that they actually added it after the RA video on it.
10:37 With the upcoming event in Hunt, this is pretty relevant since I believe they're adding it into the game this coming event on... The 14th of this month (December for those looking at this comment in the future) I believe
ehhh considering the time frame of the game it only half makes sense bc of the setting. many of these rifles would be almost new thanks to the manufacturing dates and due to the Great War not having taken place yet. MAYBEEEE only weapons from the Spanish American War would be so beat. otherwise most would probably be less than 10 years old. most would be like 5, so they'd be in a lot better conditions, especially not having rust on them. fits the games grungy zombie aesthetic tho.
@@Dezzyyy I'm assuming the zombie situation helps hand wave the time issue away as I'd imagine these guns get used constantly with no time spent for cleaning and maintenance
The name of the Crown & King is a direct reference to the Browning. The Crown & King is made by John Crown (which is a reference to John Browning) and the rest I think is a play on words Browning -> Crown & King. In-game the lore is that Crown created his own firearms company called Crown & King.
There’s a few versions of the Schofield in game. The base one has the full/normal length barrel. The one they showed has a shortened barrel for both aesthetics and balancing
Well, that's just great. Been watching Jonathan talk about gaming weapons for a very long time now, and it's so good that there's one developer out there willing to look into his critiques of what he sees. (And being completely honest, why wouldn't you? If your game is looking for accuracy, Jonathan is basically handing out free tech support.) If anywhing Winnie Soo is playing the game flawlessly. She watches these, fixes what Jonathan talks about, comes back around, actually asks him to look at certain weapons, maybe he has gripes with them, she fixes them again. I just hope he gets a mention in the game's credits for those free audits. But overall, everyone wins. From Jonathan, to the developers, to the players.
So glad to finally see Hunt: Showdown on this show again! I've been asking for it for ages, would love to see more of the weirder weapons from the game showcased in the future, too!
They didn't show the full reload animations for the Scottfield! What a shame - for those who don't know, emptying the revolver gives an opportunity to empty every casing and reload without having the extract them by hand. This actually does speed things up quite a bit compared to the single action armies.
If you return back to PAYDAY 2 again, please let him cover the Taran Tactical Innovations weapons, like the Heckler & Koch P30L, SIG-SAUER MPX, and TR-1 Ultralight used from the John Wick movies.
A few other comments have also mentioned this, you guys should get Johnathan to check out Receiver 2, you interact with every part of the gun in that game
Great video, amazing content as always! I love his overthinking moments, feel free to dive into that! Question: What's up with the framerate on his camera? The gameplay footage is normal but anytime Jonathan is on camera it's almost motion sickness inducing how bad the framerate is. His other videos aren't that bad, did something happen with this footage? You can REALLY tell at 8:54 with the side by side.
13:20 this also happens on the normal Winfield Marksman Rifle and the Veterlli Marksman as well, where the ejected casing goes through the scope. Small thing but yeah cant unsee it once you notice it.
I don't know if he's done this yet, but perhaps a cliser look at some of the weapons from "Gears of war" or it's sequels. The Lancer still has the best "bayonet" in gaming history, after all, change my mind.
Can't wait to see Jonathan take a look at Hunt part 3, lots of cool new firearms have been added including the Martini Henry attachment he mentioned here!
Out of genuine curiosity and naivety, did people or do people ever grease/lubricate the chambers on revolvers to reduce that "stiction" as coined by our dear curator. Edit: The general british accent and head nod plus demeanor of Jonathan is so great at 6:50 when he's so blasé in saying "well obviously its empty", felt like a bond villain was proving he wasn't about to shoot me LOL
Cool to see Jonathan pleased with some of the firearms and animations. Not an easy guy to please, he get's the whole "well it's for videogames" while mixing it with critique. Nice one
12:20 in the game lore, most guns are contraband or stolen from dead hunters, hence why they're so weathered. And there are some in game gun oil canisters to clean them. It even removes the scratches from the metal and furniture hahaha
