Barry is dearly Missed. Its only great He is no longer dealing with the stresses and pain he had to endure during his time with us. We miss you Brotha.
I called and talked to Eric today and he gave his time without rushing me and answered a lot of questions. I have a much better understanding on what I would like to get for my first handgun now. Thank you so much for being such a nice and friendly person Eric! The videos you guys make are always well thought out and very informative and that is very time consuming to plan and shoot. Please keep it up! I might plan a vacation out to your area just so i can buy a gun from you. You are only 11.5 hours from me and i love driving. I was very sad to hear about Barry passing! I know he is in heaven shooting for God now. Thank you!
Rest in Peace Barry, you will be sorely missed. I hope you're enjoying yourself in the afterlife, you brightened my day every time I watched you in a video, and many others at that. Much love from Earth.
So glad that you included the P64 in this video. That has been my primary carry pistol as a deliver driver for years. It has never failed to fire at the range and is surprisingly accurate. I put the trigger spring and lighter recoil kit on mine and it is a joy to shoot. I picked mine up for $170 back in 2008 and it has been one of my favorite pistols that I own. It has gotten me out of several bad situations. Great videos guys.
My NAA revolver 22 mag is with me all the time. Mine is carried in a remora pocket holster in a front pocket. Never a failure to fire. Mine has a inch and five eights barrel. Best gun purchase iv ever made.
I'm happy to be able to get the videos and learn from Barry...RIP...2017 and he's still learning me stuff. Many thanks Eric, Chad and the much missed Barry. All the way from or to Vancouver Canada eh
just wanna let u guys at "Moss Pawn" gentlemen, i just bought my 1st handgun 2day & it was the S&W SD9VE for $319+ tax here in Goodlettsville, TN @ Academy Sports + Outdoors with the background check for $10 for all 2gether i got it for all 2gether was $362.15 with a 15+1 round, i've shot a few different guns b4 of a .45, .40 & a 9mm, i'm used the 9mm & might get used to the .45 & always have been a fan of 1911 series but so damn expensive of being around $700+, so i decided to get this one am happy, thanks & just wanted to give my 2 cents
Could not agree with you more. I'm a first time buyer but I have done my homework on firearms and I personally find the S&W SD40 VE is ideal for home defense as well as self defense "hint SD". Great stuff and keep doing what you do.
today is the 5 yr anniversary of this video. It's interesting how they are talking about Glock influence, polymer frames, striker fired. And there were exactly right!
Watching Barry and Eric in these old videos is so nostalgic I remember getting home from middle school and binge watching these videos Barry always told it how it was and didn’t care what anyone thought we all miss you Barry I’m just so grateful even after all of these years I can still come back and enjoy these old videos and relive my childhood
Got 2600+ rounds through my SD9VE. To this date, not one single FTF or FTE. I have shot any and every kind of 9mm ammo, even handloads on the 'hot side'. This gun just keeps on pounding. I never changed anything, after 1k rounds the trigger gets pretty soft and isn't as hard as it is brand new. Recoil spring is still in perfect shape to have a polymer guide rod. Not one light strike yet. Keep in mind I go all out when I clean my firearms, even taking the firing pin and all out to clean/check (after a few hundred rounds some brass shavings end up inside the firing pin tube). If you own one of these guns, or are thinking about getting one, they are great, probably the best if you want a cheap'er defense handgun, my opinion. I have other guns, the SD9VE is my T+E gun for my handloads. So really, the last 1k'ish rounds through it were all handloads (that way if my dumbass goes to far with the limits I don't risk blowing up one of my expensive guns :).
I'll have to agree with your comment. owned mine for about 5 years and have shot close to 7k rounds. my only complaint is the rear sight tends to drift.
honestly this was 5ish years ago, i couldn't tell you exactly what it is but, it was almost certainly something cheap as i'm cheap. it is still broken, i never got the sticker to mail it in 5 years ago;just now am i trying to get it fixed.
sccy cpx-2, taurus pt-111 g2, sar b6pc/K2P, canik tp series, Smith and Wesson SDVE, zastava CZ999, Zastava m70a, Ruger LCPs', Chiappa MC27, thats all I can think of that I've owned/still own off the top my head, all good, reliable choices. I duty carry Sig/Glock with Hk backup, but I do ccw the aformentioned pistols from time to time.
The first two guns are just what I recommended to my friend under a budget for him and his wife. I really like my bersa 380. I had some custom carbon fiber grips made for mine and it really improved the grip and appearance. My slide has seen a lot of wear from going in and out of the holster but the grips still look like new, they have held up very well.
The only reason I can think of for you to not at least have one Taurus is because you just don't like them because of their reputation. As with all firearm companies you have a period when quality was not the best or changes had to be made to the production line do to malfunctions. S&W had some problems with the shield and early sigmas and has been plagued with revolver issues including gap space. Springfield had some problems with the XDS. I oun a few Taurus pistols and never had an issue with any of them. They have been just as reliable as my Ruger and XD pistols. You can get the Taurus pt709/940 for under $300. The Millennium G2 is all new and supposed to be really nice and can be had for around $350. Then there is the 24/7 and pt809/840. I have seen them as low as $350. And even if you have an issue they have a LIFETIME warranty.
I owned a Taurus Millenium Pro in .45ACP and shot over 5000 rounds through it..still functioned perfect and does to this day..I love my Taurus..in those 5000 rounds it never once had a hickup..no stovepipes, no hangups, no issues at all..and considering I paid $175 for it used from a local gun shop, I was more than content with it.
If anyone finds themselves in Atlanta, Moss Pawn and Gun is right on the outskirts. I was in ATL on a business trip and after the day concluded drove to Moss and got to Meet Eric and Barry. Eric took me upstairs to show me what he was working on and spend what seemed like over an hour just BSing. Great people, I'm glad to support them.
If money was a big issue & I could only afford one gun I would get a surplus Mac or CZ of some type. Really, any quality used gun is going to be a better buy than a cheap new gun.
Jacob Johnston I agree. I had some CZs when I was a student because they are affordable. They are also good, reliable guns. I have things I like more than the CZs now but they cost 3 or 4x as much. .
Love his comment about letting people try out his Glock 19. It was the first handgun i purchased and I'm so thankful for the people at Vance's in Columbus, Oh for pointing me in that direction, and away from the cheaper guns i had been looking at it. I own a half dozen handguns now, including a very recent purchase of an HK 45, but the Glock is still hands down my favorite! Thank you Dan Bilzerian for turning me onto Zev Tech products; now i have plenty of (expensive) options in mind for modifying my Glock.
Best education I've received since College. Thank you for the videos. You guys are helping me narrow down my first handgun purchase. Very informative, I'm subscribing now.
Eric Shumate I was a little surprised it wasn't there also. There sure seems to be a lot of snobbery against the Taurus. I Have over 1000 through it all types from the cheapest federal aluminum to the Liberty civil defense and never had ONE PROBLEM. And for under $250
Another great video, guys. I have watched several of your videos now, and I have to say these are the most informative videos about personal firearms I have yet seen. Please keep them coming.
Been watching you guys for awhile and love your professional experienced advice and reviews. I would not feel uncomfortable or unarmed, being armed with your suggested self defense recommendations - thanks guys
The Tokarev M70A in 9mm or M57 in 7.62x25 are overlooked in this category. The M70A is a daily carry for me. I've put several thousand rounds though it at the range and have never had a misfire. It's solid steel (other than the grip), slim fit in the hand and a 9+1 capacity. For under $300, you can't go wrong.
I have had a SW SD9VE 9 mm. Most dependable gun in my arsenal--only for $319. It's my HDG (home defense gun) and never fails go Bang, regardless of ammo. Best deal out there if you don't besmirk the low price.
Even a .22LR will drop a human being. There are no toys that go bang. They're all killers. The .22LR is the preferred round of the assassin. Does the job and does it very quietly. This should tell you something.
+Rob ONeill (Rob O) It isn't because of how quiet it is because a .22 is still loud enough 2 draw attention. A .22 is a guarantee kill. The .22 don't have enough energy 2 leave the human body so it will ricochet all over the internal organs of the body. It is basically like making them swallow a grenade. If you shoot somebody in the head the bullet will just get lodged in the skull and it may not kill them. Shooting them in the chest is the best way 2 kill them if you're using a .22 rifle or pistol. The draw back is that if you're shooting from a long distance the .22 bullet will lose a ton of power and may not be deadly when it hits the target.
+Bubba B I agree. I was shot in the guts by one in '84. Six major surgeries and 5 outpatient surgeries later, I still need more. Fucked up my life in big ways. Still carrying the bullet at the base of my butt. Went in the front and stuck in the back. Nearly killed me. I was only saved because my doctor had been a battlefield surgeon in Vietnam and knew exactly how to handle a gut shot wound. I came very close, even had a near death experience and spoke with a Spirit while on the Operating Room Table.
+Rob ONeill (Rob O) The only time a gun will drop you where you stand is if its a kill shot. Mainly to the head. A shot to the heart will about 95% of the time kill you where you stand as well. Even if you shoot someone with a 44 in the chest and it misses their heart. They are still going to be alive, bleeding out like a son of a bitch but still alive and possible to deliver a death blow themselves before they expire. If its not a kill shot more often than not they will be alive till they bleed out, or bleeding stops, or a kill shot is delivered.
+Rob ONeill (Rob O) So glad you are OK now and had a competent surgeon! People also forget that Pres. Reagan was almost killed by a .22 round that had already ricocheted off of the door frame of his limo before entering his chest..
Im about to buy my first handgun, and while I like your list and I definitly want that .22mag cause ive seen those for about $150, my budget is about 500-600$. Im torn between two guns, the Glock 21 .45acp, or the 9mm Walther PPQ. Both great companies, both reliable and accurate shooters. I guess it comes down to weather having 15 9mm rounds is better than having 13+1 .45acp rounds. Can anyone give me a suggestion?
I haven't shot the PPQ, but I've heard good things about it, and its trigger. A recommendation depends on your intended use. As a range gun, I'd go with a 9mm over a .45. But then I'd consider a Glock in a 9mm, or the S&W they look at here, or a Stoeger Cougar. The Cougar is the old Beretta Cougar. It was the daddy of the PX4 Storm, but in steel, rather than polymer. They run about $400 I think at Academy Sports. Or, look at the Taurus PT92, which runs under $400. Taurus builds it in the old Beretta factory and some folks like it better than the Beretta 92. That .22 Mag is only for a hideout emergency gun.
The PPQ is an excellent weapon. Hands down the best striker-fired gun experience, out of the box, that I have ever had. It is also quite comfortable to carry for me. If this is going to be a primary carry weapon for you, I wouldn't go with the G21. The PPQ is a great choice, but if you want a bit more gun look at a G23. There is a reason .40 has become a popular round for LEO, and the G23 is probably the best platform for CC in a .40. You can also get the Lone Wolf 9mm barrel to switch it to basically a G19 with a heavier nose to maximize ammo availability. That all said, you will not be dissatisfied with a PPQ.
For self protection you will probably only get one shot. CCW weapons are for in your face point and shoot. They are not target pistols. I hope you never need to test these theories.
this video is 6 years old now but it excited me to see a p-64. it was my first semi-auto handgun and i love it. not many people know what it is when i talk about it so i just tell them its a makarov copy. i wouldn't trade it for anything
I have a Taurus 709 slim and a 24/7 45. The 709 has never failed, the 24/7 45 I got with 5 mags 2nd hand, 2 of the mags would not feed 100% so I called Taurus and they sent me 2 new mags free. Now both fire without any issues with 8" groups @ 75'
Chace t Early glocks are well known to blow up. As in, you fire a round and the gun explodes into pieces in your hand. Check your serial number on glocks website to see if it's safe or not.
I have been looking for a pistol for the longest time that would fit my criteria: 9mm very small SA/DA at least 10 round standard mag I couldn't find any really small 9mm's that weren't DAO, and I figured a Thunder 380 was the closest I could get. I WAS WRONG! Thank you guys for mentioning their Thunder Plus. It got me to go to the Bersa website, where I found the Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Carry. While it seems much different from the Thunder 380, it is only a little larger, and has a standard 13 round mag. It has everything I want in a pistol, and even though you didn't mention it in the video, I likely never would've found it without watching this. With how much popularity the 380 has, and how I've never seen a single other product from Bersa, I simply assumed the Thunder 380 was their only notable product. I was wrong, and I'm glad I was!
i have the sd9ve...absolutely love this gun...accurate, reliable and very reasonably priced...highly recommend it to anybody looking for a good budget 9mm...
True story: I took my hi point .40 to the range with my Dad. He has a Kimber 1911. After 300 rounds, I had zero failure to feeds or failure to ejects. His Kimber 1911 had 3. Anecdotal evidence yes, but I’ve put around 1,000 rounds through my hi point and had 1 failure to feed (had never cleaned the pistol until that point) Hi points simply work.
Aaron Deaton same experience with my hi-point carbines (i own the 9mm&.45acp). Pull the trigger and it shoots every time. The triggers are kind of heavy&long but a gun Smith in the family solved that problem.
Why ? If you're buying a gun at some point you intend to use it as a tool for self defense among other things, why go cheap ? Just save up till you can afford a better gun imo. If you really want the cheapest gun that works that dubious distinction would go to the High Point. They come in right around $150 these days. However if you can afford one of those then you can afford to save up another few months and buy one of the ones in this video, or save up another few months and buy something like a Glock.
piratesthatpwn Its not that bad. A box of 9mm range ammo is anywhere from $13-$17 dollars these days. Self defense ammo can be had for around $20-$25 a box. Even on a tight budget most people should be able to afford $50 every couple months to spend on range ammo and a range trip to practice.
I ended up going with the sd9. Awesome gun. I expected a turd thanks to the sigma reputation but i was wrong. Its reliable, very accurate, and pretty comfortable in my hand. Not a fan of stainless slides but i can live with it.
+Billy Celli i actually like the sigma after i reworked the trigger.another inexpensive gun is the hi-point c-9 .only 169have been using it with ball ammo on snakes.
+STUSKY Can't speak to DB's smaller compacts, but the DBFS9's easily one of the most underrated FS Polymer framed handguns out there and an excellent performer. Fact, end of story.
+Nor Wester (4Rescue) Actually yea the DBFS9 is great but after a little over 500 rounds mine failed. I sold it but I'm wanting to get another to give it another try. It shot great and never really malfunctioned. Besides with Perfecta 115 Gr. It liked 124 Gr.
Sorry to hear you had a failure, what happened if you don't mind me asking?. I really like how mine shoots, the bore-axis/grip is REALLY low to the top of your hand and it really kills what little recoil the 9mm has for me. I wish ya luck if you give it a try again, it can be hard to trust something that failed you once, esp. firearms. I haven't actually been shooting mine since I picked up a Canik TP9SA though (I have a thing for the "sleeper", budget guns and that Canik is AMAZING, so much so I wish I could use it as an EDC) but the DB has been fairly flawless for me. The DB is getting re-deployed as the "truck gun" for the time being but not because it hasn't worked, it just got beaten out by a better "sleeper". For the backcountry I carry my 10mm G20. and my EDC/CC weapon is a Kahr 9mm.
+Nor Wester (4Rescue) The striker wasn't engaging. It did run flawless besides when I used perfecta. Also the last mag I shot it slam fired the last two rounds. DiamondBack never responded to my message even to this day. I really like the gun though. I'm more than likely gonna give it another shot.
Kench Maker I'm sorry to hear that the Philippines has the lock down on ya'll over there. Governments just don't understand that armed civilians are a great thing. Whose gonna invade a country full of people with guns. You want the people to be able to assemble a militia in a national emergency. Plus, what criminal wants to break into someones house when he knows he's just gonna get filled with lead as soon as he walks through the door.
Use to double action revolver triggers S&W SD9VE 7-8 lb trigger isn't bad, it's not a target pistol, it's a defense pistol. One thing I did was replace the factor 17 lb factory recoil guise rod assembly with 20 lb Galloway Precision stainless steel one. Helps reduce limp wristing, S&W SD9VE is my EDC firearm have had no issues. S&W could sell these at $450 so $300-$350 is an awesome deal. Those on a budget, look for a dealer with a layaway program.
Gents, I carry a CZ vz 82 everywhere I go...been able to get 9x18 ammo right along...while the CZ83 was going hungry(8-) Also have a P64 and love it for when the CZ82 might be a little too bulky...but the double action pull..Damn! Love the polygonal rifling in the CZ82 barrel... Both shoot pretty accurately for me...though the 82 hits a little harder with its longer barrel. Oh...and thanks for all you guys do to make lotsa good data available for new... and some of us older shooters. You Lads rock!98-)
travis bickle Yeah...they hold up pretty well too. Now. the 83 is a little loose and sloppy...but a friend made a tiny little bushing to tighten up the barrel to slide fit. I'll get a little more range toy time out of it and then it can be parts for the 82.
Hell, where I live during the ammo scare, I could find 9x18 more than I could find 9x19 or even .40. 10 bucks for 50 rounds, you can't beat it. I actually thought about looking into converting a G19 to 9x18 just for range time.
RandyLeftHandy At a local gunshop, a lady came in and bought a little Sig .380 pistol to pack. But at the time they had no ammo to sell her. One lad who works there went to his car and got 25 rounds so the lady could at least try the gun out. Next day I took 2 boxes of .380 down there and the owner traded me 3 boxed of 9X18 for it. And I STILL see more 9x18 around than 9X17... thought supply is catching up on .380/9X17 lately.
I had a P-64 years ago but sold as I needed the money. It was a good shooter. Been looking at the Versa Thunder and the Combat models. Both are quality guns and soon, one will be hanging on the belt. Thanks for the video. Well done.
And here we are in 2021 with the largest selection of outstanding, superb modern combat handguns in 9mm from $300 and up. Canik TP9's, Taurus G3, CZ P10, Sar9, Walther PDP, S&W MP 2.0, and the list goes on.
I got a Makarov 380 acp that was made in the early 90's for the American civilian market. It has an adjustable rear sight and it's chambered for 380acp. I love the double/single action. It's bullet proof. It used to be a great carry gun but now I carry either the Ruger ECP 380 as my pocket gun or the LCP 9mm. The Makarov is still just a tad too heavy and a tad too big to fit in my blue jeans pocket without imprinting....
Gotta give the NAA props! I got the Black Widow which has a longer barrel than the Pug, but basically same concept. I got it in college because my school had a no gun policy, so I needed a deep concealment piece. Invisible under even the most bare summer clothing (I routinely wore it under shorts and a t-shirt in my pants pocket) and as they say, the best concealed piece is the one you HAVE!
ive got an SW9 that ive had for years . i honestly never thought the trigger was "bad", it doesnt feel any different to me than my Glock. its 100 percent reliable and eats any ammo i throw in it . its also accurate . couldnt ask for anything more . its a heck of a bargain for a high cap 9mm .
I just picked the S&W sd9VE and I love it so far. Payed 350 and some change. The only thing I want to see them do is to come up with a better grip or have changeable grips, kinda like a Tarus. I own two Taurus weapons, the 840, and the PT 709 slim. Great videos guys!
I was really saddened,by barrys passing but God always calls the best eartoplier, dont top doing video's and 1 more thing I s I watch another great teacher and as I was posting im getting into training on shooting by the way he go's by hickok 45
Glad to see a Derringer made the cut. I've carried an old Davis Derringer for about 20 years now. Best 34-dollar gun I ever bought -- I was a dealer then & paid wholesale, of course. I'm sure it's not the quality of the NAA Arms model, but it's a shame the Davis didn't survive. Anyone could afford it, and it's truly a firearm you can ALWAYS carry, even in running shorts, and .22 mag is a serious load. And at that price you didn't care if your pocket change scarred it up.
First off I LOVE all these vids incd Gun Gripes. I was reading about an undercover FBI bust in NY NY that went sideways and the agent had a N American arms 22mag as his holdout. The UC had to use the 22mag and later the NYPD support team asked what they heck he was using. The NAA 22mag has another feature that when you shoot it at someone that is not expecting it the muzzle flash and sound is like a cannon. The 22mag is a great round for a backup IMHO. Thanks to MR Moss for lending the shop.
I recently purchased a Zastava M57 (7.62x25), brand new manufacture for about $270. I have yet to receive it, kind of a late Christmas present. But none the less, I would highly recommend either this model of the M70 (9mm version). They are very inexpensive and damn fine quality for what you pay for. Brand new manufacture, so the safeties included on them are designed for them, not just 'tacked on' for importation laws, etc. Now I mentioned the M70 model, basically the same price, almost the same gun except the cal. change. Since the 7.62 Tokarev round is starting to get more difficult to find, BUT their are still new manufacture ammunition that is made for it. So despite the higher price for the ammo, it might just be worth it in the end.
i have personally had a problem with the bersa trigger not re engaging but it was just a pin behind the trigger and under the handle. the pin will work itself out about a millimeter but it is a very simple fix. You just have to re seat the pin with a punch and hammer. I love this gun i use this gun my wife loves this gun. it is fun and comfortable to shoot
We started selling the Turkish made CZ clones by Sarsilmaz (In the US as SAR ARMS) around six months ago. We sell the SAR B6 and B6 Compact for $289. We've sold many dozens and have heard nothing but positive feedback - For the money they cant be beat.
Looking back at this video and seeing the budget options that were available just 7 years ago compared to today is astonishing. These days, you can pick up great value guns in the $200 range instead of $300 that are still really good quality for the money.
In my experience teaching shooting to people who have never handled guns before, I would always recommend a single-action, slide operated, hammer-fired semiautomatic. They are simpler in design, thus easy to learn it's full functions, and much safer to handle. The 1911 is a great choice for someone who wants to own an automatic for the first time. As of this time, Kahr Arms AKA Auto-Ordnance makes a basic, milspec 1911 for budget price, and they have been for the last 20 years.
hell ya a keltec pf9. I bought one for 300 after all fees and taxes 3 months ago. Ive put 600 rounds through it of all types (hp, ball, 115gr, 124gr, PMC, federal, american eagle) and have had only 1 malfuntion (an FTE on the 20th or so round). The next 580 rounds have been flawless, and the gun shoots just as accurately if not more accurately than my buddies Ruger LC9. The PF9 is bang for the buck regardless of your prejudices.
I just received today a magazine for a .380 Bersa. Promag 383A/Series 95 7 rnd. under $18.00 with lifetime warranty, just like the gun. the UC .40 S&W shipped with 2 mags. 1911 you can get any place, Makarov also 2 mags, baby eagle two mags and so on. The only pistol I don't have 2 mags is the hi-point c9, but I don't plan on shooting it that much. Shoots fine but not easily concealable with that size slide. It will be a truck gun.
I always frowned upon a Taurus but I found the PT92 at Academy Sports for 329.00! It comes with a 19 round and a 17 round mag! So far I think it is the best deal on a gun I ever got!!! It is a well balanced functional and good looking gun. As far as conceal carry it is not but makes a good truck gun!
Right now the Hungarian Hi-Powers are available right around the $350-$400 range. A reliable, 13-round double-stack pistol, and it's a classic design. It's one of the best deals out there, especially since an FN-made one costs more than twice that much.
You two made one he'll of a pair. Damn I keep saying this but I didn't know Barry but I feel like I did in a weird way. I am not ashamed to say I shed a tear when he passed. I am not a ball baby either.
I have a P-64 and it's very easy to shoot accurately. It's a blowback design where the barrel is fixed to the frame, where many semi-auto pistols are locked breech designs with a tilting barrel.
Just to elaborate on the Millennium a bit, a friend and myself ran 800rds of 230gr cast bullets loads through my Millenniums last Saturday, reloaded all 800 and ran them again on Sunday with no malfunctions and not a bit of cleaning or lubricating. 800 rounds through each gun in 2 days without a malfunction is pretty good for a $350 pistol running cast bullets.
A hand gun I would highly recommend is the high-point 40sw. I bought one brand new in the box for $235. It also came with a laser. The gun fires flawlessly and is vary easy to take apart and clean. It is a bit of a brick but for under $300 you defiantly get a lot of bang for your buck.
