The B-52 is scheduled for retirement in 2045, that will be 90 years from it's first activation at Castle Air Force Base with the 93rd Bomb Wing. For the aircraft themselves it will be 83 years in service from the date of the last B-52H being delivered to the U.S. Air Force on October 26th 1962. That aircraft being B-52 61-0042 that last of the kind. Guess Boeing engineers and architects did a fantastic job!!

So, while debating the B-52's usefulness, are we supposed to forget about the existence of the MALD, MALD-J, JASSM-ER, AGM-88E, JSOW, low-flying capabilities, and electromagnetic jamming, all of which have been or will be integrated with the B-52, and all of which enable the B-52 to be used against an enemy with air defenses? Based on your argument that the B-52 is useless, it would appear that you would like us to temporarily disband our knowledge of those systems while analyzing it.

What is embarrasing about it??!! It got it's own purpose. It may be 'ancinent' but it keeps getting upgraded with technical components. It will remain in service for several more years. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

If you seriously believe a single cruise missile could sink a 1,000 foot long, 100,000 ton, heavily honeycombed ship in a single hit, your best bet would be to find your nearest mental institution and check yourself in. Then, of course, you have the fact that U.S. Navy ships are protected by the ESSM and SM-6, which make those Russian missiles pretty benign.

Except by the time the B52's get there, the opposing air force will have been wiped out either on the ground or in the air.

I like this plane it's proven excellent for carpet bombing but I do prefer the Tu 160.
