In this video Derek looks at Danish culture and history to explain why Danes go so crazy for New Years fireworks. Fireworks in Denmark have always been a spectacle since moving to Copenhagen in 2017. Year after year, we are amazed at just how wild for fireworks our Danish friends and neighbors can get. We know firsthand that this can be a weird tradition for many foreigners living in Denmark - even if they're used to celebrating New Years with a fireworks show.
We've always wondered why the tradition of New Years Eve fireworks has become so intense in Denmark. In Danish history, there are examples of pistols being used to "ring in the new year" and there are many examples of Danish history being shaped by fireworks. Most of all, the Seest fireworks tragedy in 2004.
This video explains the historical and cultural reasons behind the love of fireworks in Denmark as well as the changing opinions of most Danes. The change in public sentiment could result in new Danish laws to restrict fireworks in Denmark beginning next New Years Eve.
How will New Years Eve in Denmark continue to evolve and what do you think about Danes and their love of fireworks?

In my family lighting the fireworks ourselves is part of the tradition that some of us look forward to. However, we've been raised with safety precautions in place to prevent hazards that previous generations risked. Eye protection is required. You walk away from your lit fireworks instead of running so you don't trip. You don't return to fireworks that fail to take off. Rockets must always be fully vertical.

All the way through (form 0. to Gym) school on the last day before chrismasholiday we are told to take care and come back with all our fingers. Not to mention our parents who teach us the proper way to do it. My father works with things that says boom and when we for the first time lit firework he helped. It was so fun😅

Looking out of my window in Copenhagen, there are no buildings opposite and I can see right down the road to traffic lights in the distance. Usually a good display but 1999/2000 was spectacular with all kinds of fireworks arching over the road from both sides and one end to the other - there's no way they were all legal. But I'm English and with some friends once (1980ish) decided to celebrate bonfire night (Guy Fawkes - Nov. 5th). It never entered our heads that it might be illegal, but we were on a beach beside a major shipping lane and it only took a couple of minutes for the police to descend after we fired off our first rocket. Luckily we were not drunk (we hadn't been there long enough) and Danish police are generally reasonable people so we were only told to stop.

If you think things in Denmark are crazy, try being on the 31th in the Netherlands. It starts even a few days before new years eve and its constant bangs. In the northern provinces they even fire metal milk containers that create bangs that make our houses shake. We have official firework regulation that we can light it only after 18.00 but none follow that. Here people fire all kind of fireworks from normal to illegal avalange arrows. So not all european neighbours like to spend New Years eve indoors ;)

How they could see it all from a hill top balcony, and jump under the table, when they saw it all explode. They all sat in the bathroom with no power and a battery-radio, hearing the fireworks outside, while the radio said George Bush had won the presidentsy

A house was blown to smithereens by a "chrysanthemum" bomb, it's a ball shaped charge on the end of a rocket, next to my house when I was a kid in the 90's and it was a popular pass time for us kids to blow up mail boxes and generally do some pretty questionable explosive experimentation by engineering our own bombs from dissected fireworks. In my adult life I have had many bad experiences with equally stupid kids shooting at me and others with roman candles or fireworks charges meant to be detonated at heights of 100 meters or more. I am glad to see this shit go and I am thankful I still have all my fingers.

Building Lego cars, putting rockets on it to let it race. Blowing up rotting apples with illigal "kanonslag" (cannon shots???), and a lot more! Now a days everything is so controlled and boring.

I would argue hygge isn't just "cozy" it's more like a feeling of being in love with the moment... The world could be burning but then a family member comes with blankets and hot cocoa and suddenly all the bad in the world disappears... When you feel hygge then you dont feel the cold... Hygge can be drinking with your friends, it can be having sex, it can be going for a walk... In Danish the word for scary is "uhyggeligt" being "not hyggeligt" under World War 2 we were forced to black out our windows and could only have candle light to light our homes because the fear of the nazis bombing us... That's why hygge is such a big part of our culture... You can't have hygge without uhygge... Hygge is more the feeling of safety making us forget everything bad... When you just stop in the moment and have to take everything in and you wish that moment would never stop and you could die right now and it feels like it would be okay because you are with someone you love(be it friends, family or your girlfriend/boyfriend)... It is really hard to explain... But if you have ever just felt in love with the moment and you just find yourself disappear and taking it all in... That's the feeling of hygge... Are firework cozy? No... But is hygge to stand with your neighbors, friends and family and look up at the sky... You dont feel the cold... You dont hear anything around other than the people you are with... You are just in love with the moment... It is really hard to explain... I think that is why people just took it to mean cozy... But a banging party can also be hyggeligt... Its just enjoying the moment and the people you are with in an intense way... You get that warm feeling from within and you wish here and now would never end... Wish it was always like this...

It becomes more of a recent events/news video meaing that i as a dane can also learn a thing or two. ps: personally i have stopped in recent years to buy and fire off fireworks - mostly for two reasons: 1) its a waste of money in one of the already most expensive seasons of the year (ie chrismas) 2) it harmful to the environment with all waste it makes.

It's the time a year there are no diffrence between a kid and an old man i love it. But we have made our own table so no matter if a battery blow up, it can't harm anyone, and we don't get drunk so we still can do it safe. But many people can seem to figure out keeping thwm self and others safe. They shoot rockets in to eachother. I don't know where that has come from.

Another major tradition is new years pranks . Crude but sometimes elaborate pranks played on neighbors and strangers during new years night . Legends tell of picket fences hoisted up flagpoles, shotguns fired over peoples heads and fooling entire families into thinking it is still night for days . More modern reports include rowdy teens stealing and relocating anything not under lock and key (thus a practice of moving all such things into locked sheds for the entire night), and even more rowdy teens using fireworks to blow up public mailboxes (thus postal workers locking up all of them for the duration) .

One new years prank I see a lot in Denmark is when teenagers find a Christmas tree. It usually gets "stolen" (accepted because Christmas is over and the tree is now garbage), and then hung at the top of the nearest flagpole. A bit pointless, but also an innocent prank with the only "victim" being the owner of the flagpole having to lower the tree from the pole and dispose of it.

@@RobeTrotting This is no longer done, as far as I know, but it used to be common. Do you know about Peters Jul? It is a book from 1866, still in print, that describes Christmas from little Peter looking forward longingly, to the dustman carrying away the Christmas tree in the spring. I recommend that you read it. It is such a cultural icon. From the section Nytårs Aften: Nå, hvor det buldrer derude! Hør! Der kom en potte på Karens dør. Det var vist Anders, for Karen siger, at han gør løjer med alle piger. If you go further back, the people of the house would reward the throwers with treats. The purpose was originally to chase away bad luck. But that was very long ago. Peter thinks that whoever did the throwing was having fun with Karen.

Great video as always.. But im always baffled that hygge seems to have Hoogah as its pronunciation. Hoogah can not turn into hygge in my language. To begin with double O does not make a Y sound. A danish Y doesn't hasn't got a sound that exist in English. So saying Hygge is pronounced as Hoogah is like saying ice cream is pronounced ees croom.
@RobeTrotting
@RobeTrotting 5 месяцев назад
Yeah, I think it’s just how I talk - you can tell I speak and accent my English differently than other people (native and non-native). It’s something I may be sensitive about, and I believe you’re trying to help, but it comes across as nitpicking and is discouraging. People speak second languages with accents and pronunciation that is different than native speakers - but if you understand them, why shame them?

@@RobeTrotting well, this time i was thinking more about the 900 US videos online that always puts it down as Hoogah. It's even spelt that sometimes. So i just spelt it like that before seeing that you didn't spell it like that. But it seems to be the norm. So the Hoogah becomes the go to spelling now. But its like that American i saw trying hotdogs from a pølsevogn in Cph. He asked the lady whats your name, and she goes Lone. And he said.. Bye Loon.. That's not anywhere near what she said.. Thats why i say.. Maybe not so much.. Lets be fluent in danish and know every word and sentence there is.. Rather.. Less words but with focus on the actual pronunciation. Its not nice when a Lone becomes a Loon.. And no im not danish myself, i just came before it became hard to pronounce anything. That's my advantage. 😉

@@RobeTrotting and no it's not a shaming thing.. But considering i had a friend from Iran thay came here at 26 or so and was fluent within 6 months and never did any word in a way that it wasn't said.. And i taught myself Japanese when living in London.. I do believe that All these languages doesn't have anything to do with danish.. But sounds like its said.. I made that important from the get go in 1994. Everything must sound Japanese.. And a lot of Americans online think that Scandinavian words are said like they are in English.. And ive noticed that scandis never assume that anything is remotely the same. They start out thinking this is gonna be different. But take both Ryan and Taylor Wuss or Wass depending on what of their 900 channels you go to.. They always go.. Oh foreign language, that's gonna be like this.. And looking at the german punk band Die Ärzte and think it's said like Die Hard mixed with Arses.. So dying assholes or something.. That too can feel a bit tiresome after a while.. Like everything has to be said like a guy from New York would say it.. That can be a bit much after 15-20 years of seeing that.. Im not trying to be a douche or anything and it's not really against you guys anyway... Its just getting a bit.. Oh here we go again with the weird stuff.. And with only Americans and the odd Brit doing it you get a bit.. Come on now.. That's all it is.. An observation.. And Hygge seems to land on all US morning shows and talk shows for some reason. But always said with this conviction that it's Hoogah.. Thers even a bloody US book about danish Hoogah.. Even though you couldn't put Hygge up against Hoogah and make it sound the same.. Its getting to be a bit meh.. And i don't believe that Americans can't hear sounds as well as Europeans. It sounds dumb to make them less than anybody else on this planet.. I wont buy that.. Sounds are sounds and we learn them just like a mocking bird would. Yanks aren't less than birds right.? I have met a lot of US people that come out with.. Americans are not made to make those sounds.. So Arabs. Chinese and everybody else can do it just not English speakers? Nonsense. Amd what advantage does an Arab have ? I would say none.. Its all that stuff that's grinding me.. Not anybody specific channel really..

Only 5 million??? - that sounds very low 😮 It's not [hoog-ga] btw., but [h'ue'g-ge] with the 'ue' being like the first vowel in the word "ne(w)" or the French word "rue" (street). It's a bit like an "ee"-sound, but with pointy (kiss) lips instead 😉

@@RobeTrotting Yeah, this confuses me too. On all my firework cakes, it says F3 and G1.3, which represent the groups the fireworks belong to. That's the maximum for consumer fireworks. But as you said, online it says F1 and F2 are the only classes sold, but most of the articles I found were for Sweden

A major source of wanting fireworks restrictions is widespread misuse, such as firing at all times of night from early December to late January . Hence the reduced sale period and even shorter legal use period . Then there's the usual idiots trying to promote exaggerated restrictions for stupid reasons like scared pets etc.
@RobeTrotting

I definitely sympathize with the impact it has on dogs, with their hearing it just ruins their lives for four days. But you’re right, the overall “issue” tends to be caused by a small minority misusing them and ruining things for the rest. God Nytår til dig 🥳

Why do America’s go nuts on 4th of Juli ?
@RobeTrotting
@RobeTrotting 5 месяцев назад
I think most countries go a little nuts on their national day/independence day, July 4th is usually just a trip to the beach or a backyard bbq BUT where I grew up it’s usually municipal fireworks shows and the personal ones are low grade fireworks (F1 and F2 by EU measures). They also aren’t non-stop or on the same level and it’s not New Years level of intoxication, so it’s a bit different tbh.

It’s as if this time Danes are allowed to do something “they’re not supposed to” and set off powerful explosions in the sky leaving it in the old year, just before everyone is expected to conform, be like each other and adhere to social forms built on conduct and control. Sad if true, hope not..
