Weird DANISH CHRISTMAS Things to Foreigners Living in Denmark

In this video Derek looks at Danish Christmas traditions, celebrations and experiences in Denmark. In particular, we focus on cultural things that confuse foreigners and even seem weird to outsiders learning about Christmas in Denmark. Derek is joined by none other than himself - but from 2017. The "old Derek" from November of his first year after moving to Denmark has already seen a lot of strange Danish things. Christmas offers a brand new crop of strange Danish cultural experiences. Luckily, modern-day Derek is there as a guide to explain these things that seemed really weird at first after moving to Denmark from the United States.
Of course - NONE of these things are "weird" - they're just different. Danish culture is beautiful and fun to learn about, and this was a neat way to show them all! That said, many of these things are surprises and even culture shocks for people who move to Denmark or travel to Denmark at Christmas.
Here are some of the things about living in Denmark during that first Christmas which were surprising to 2017 Derek with explanations from 2023 Derek. It's a summary of all the lessons that I've learned from living with the Danes during Christmastime or Jul 🎄 🇩🇰

The calendars are/were probably my favorite part of Christmas. You get a bit of chocolate in the morning and a few other things for when you get back home again. There will be a little hint about the days episode of the tv calendar and you’ll spend most of the month thinking, maybe it’s this year I win the big amount on that scratch off calendar. On the 23 th my family used to split up, where my mom went to her mom and decorate the Christmas tree and my dad went to his parents and did the same. My sister and I who are twins would then switch between them year to year. But both of my grandparents on my dad’s side have died in the recent years, so now he just stay home with one twin and make some good dinner. We also got the tradition of starting at 13 on the 24th because my grandpa got sick. But it has been like that most of my life, so it’ll be a tradition I’ll try and continue. We dance around the tree first and give gifts before we eat, because then it’s out of the way.

Unsure where you have the idea, that the tree has to de decrorated with gold and silver stars - most people I know use a variaty of colours. Also fun fact - Julehjerter used to have candy put in them, alongside krammerhuse, so at the end of the evening, kids got to "eat the tree"

Where have you been?😮 Almost everyone I know, including myself, have our house filled with tinsel, julehjerter (Christmas hearts) nisser, angels, candles, stockings, more nisser and even more nisser! Seriously. Imagine just every window pain, shelf and basically every flat suffice packed with nisser. And of course the indoor electric lights. Sorry you missed it. ❤️🎄🥂 Still. I will say the decorations are very individual. Some people go with the clean Scandinavian type, some more traditional Danish, some more American style and of course many do a mix. As far as the candles go it’s getting quite common to have electric candles on the tree cause fire hazard same with Lucia although it depends on the place and the older children the more common real candles get. But I do remember in my kindergarten I was the lead girl and the wreath which was a little bit too big had real flames and I was soooo nervous. But when I got to real school we just had the electric ones that look like real candles

In Scadinavia we count down until Jul, which is why we start celebration on the 24th and that lasts 3 days with various gatherings. Most countries go by the concept that santa arrives on the night of the 24th, and so too here. So that is why we count down to 24th, as the start of Jule, which starts on the 25th.

Well it isn't the first christmas beer. You can get Carlsberg 47, Grimbergen Noel, Hancock Merry x-mas and a lot more, before the horrible Juleøl from Tuborg. In the viking age, the origin of Christmas was because of yulefest, which was a big gathering at the longhouse, where you prepared and ate the last fresh produce you got, so it wouldn't get spoiled, and then you were fasting indtil fastelavn aka there was limited supply of food up here in the north :P Then the Christians came and said that Jesus was born accidently at the same time as yulefest.
