If we saw the condition of the boat that he bought for $1US you could understand when I say that it was overpriced. Sadly, about 99% of the original timber was little more than firewood. However, it looks like Leo has learned his craft well & I am impressed that he went all the way to the deep south to buy Live Oak simply because it was the best timber for the job at hand. But seriously Leo, $1? Couldn't you haggle?

Leo, cheap fuel fill tip: soak the wood decking around the deck fill completely with water before you start fueling. The water is heavier than diesel and it fills the pores completely before fuel splatters might be landing. The diesel floats and is wiped up easily without residue discoloration of your wood deck. This works on powerboats too.

Keep the freezer in the counter that way the cold is gonna stay down when you open it from the top. Keep the drawer as a fridge… you gonna loose some cold but in the end it will have to work less than to be a freezer 👍🏻✌🏻🇨🇦
@herpderp159
@herpderp159 3 месяца назад
Plus as Patty said he'll need the fridge more often (say for milk to make tea) so it makes sense to not have to clear the counter just to access the fridge. Makes sense to have the fridge be pullout.
@722garage9
@722garage9 3 месяца назад
Question is which one do you use most. As a freezer the counter top can be used more. Paddy might be right, but ultimately, what you cook will dictate daily operations!
@solcrusher
@solcrusher 3 месяца назад
This is my main argument for making the counter one the freezer. However most of the thermal mass in a freezer or fridge is in the contents, not the air. A freezer or fridge full of stuff will take significantly longer to cool down or warm up. The relatively small mass of air in a freezer isn't as big of a deal. Especially if you aren't constantly opening it. Actually from that point of view, the cold box being opened more often should be the one that better contains the air. But either way, the difference in efficiencies we're talking about here are pretty small. Tally Ho certainly isn't lacking for power availability, so I think whatever is more convenient for the crew is the right call. For further viewing, Technology Connections has a video that gives a lot of insight into fridge/freezer design: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8PTjPzw9VhY.html.

Could put walls around the sides of the drawer for the lower fridge/freezer to help keep the cold in.
@davidc6510
@davidc6510 3 месяца назад
Fridge access from galley counter has more space for day to day items and keep the cooler on the open and close. Freezer on the pull out used less often and as such not a big deal for short term cold loss.

When the horizontally sliding fridge/freezer is pulled out, all the cold spills away. Inconvenient if that's the fridge, but a significant power drain if that's the freezer. But opening the top and reaching down is a perfect design for a freezer.
@MikeAG333
@MikeAG333 3 месяца назад
No, "all the cold" doesn't spill away. The cold in a fridge or a freezer is mainly in the contents (high thermal mass), and not in the air (low thermal mass). Losing some cold air is a pity, but it's relatively trivial.
@ahaveland
@ahaveland 3 месяца назад
Just add some walls to the drawer to help keep the cold in when it's opened, and also line with aluminium foil and foam insulation.
@HunterJE
@HunterJE 3 месяца назад
While I agree the thermal mass is more in the contents than the air, the air isn't trivial insofar as replacing all the cold dry air with warm, relatively humid air every time you access seems more likely to lead to potential frost issues over time, this is all hypothetical so would need to see how the system actually performed in this aspect...
@MikeAG333
@MikeAG333 3 месяца назад
@@HunterJE That's all true. I was responding to the claim that "all the cold was lost". It isn't, as we agree. Ideally, you wouldn't want to be replacing the air volume every time the unit was accessed.....but even if you did, that wouldn't mean having to replace all the cold.
@ahaveland
@ahaveland 3 месяца назад
@@HunterJE Yes, the entire volume of air will be dumped each time it's opened and replaced with warm humid air which will just condense drop out as frost which will consume energy and quickly build up. Chest freezer is the way to go.

That diesel is red because it has a dye in it to distinguish it from regular diesel. It is made for off-road vehicles and does not have the taxes applied to it that regular diesel has. It also has a higher sulfur content and doesn't burn as cleanly. It is usually used for construction equipment and off-road toy vehicles. It will stain internal lines and filters, though. What a transformation from the disaster you started off with. I think Albert Strange would be very pleased with what you've done with his creation. Functional and beautiful at the same time, retaining the "old " ways while incorporating modern technology. I get wanting to retain the historical way of sailing, but even Strange was forward-thinking when he added the parafin engine to the design. That's what he had to work with at the time. How about provisions for straps to secure the cook when hard on the wind in a good breeze. Also, Acorn found that the WB stove was less than optimal as the diesel system worked so well that the WB stove was not necessary (i.e., more storage), and they are in the NE with snow and ice. Thanks again for your wonderful skills in editing and mixing and blending of the content and the music. Have the slide-out be the fridge and the top-down be the freezer. Also Id leave the metal surface exposed since it contrasts nicely with the wood.
@railalis
@railalis 3 месяца назад
Also, you don't want to let cold air out of the cold box The freezer won't have to work as hard to cool things down again after being opened if it's a chest freezer rather than a drawer.
@HunterJE
@HunterJE 3 месяца назад
Plus you're much less likely to have something spill or leak in a freezer (most things being solid at least within a short time after being put in there), which is DEFINITELY a thing that happens with top loading fridges no matter how careful you think you're being ask me how I know. Not fun having to pull everything in your fridge out to clean up that mess...
@LoneEagle2061
@LoneEagle2061 3 месяца назад
Chest freezers are vastly more efficient than vertical ones; because the cold air is disturbed less by top access than by a door or drawer (which let it all flow out when opened). Depending on how frequently the fridge is used compared to the freezer, condensation may also be a factor to consider as that cold air flows out of the drawer and draws fresh water onto timbers. My assumption is that (generally speaking) the fridge will be accessed less frequently aboard than ashore, as supplies like fresh milk for tea will be limited.

Adding to this, I think the counter unit has more capacity and I'd imagine youll want to keep more stuff frozen over a long voyage
@tomgidden
@tomgidden 3 месяца назад
Agreed... from the vast amount of knowledge I have from watching less than a handful of videos on RU-vid about chest freezers (hey, Alec), it seems to make more sense for the side-opener to be a refrigerator and the top-opener to be a freezer. I get why it feels the other way -- Leo's "freezer" is more stowed-away kneeling-down under stuff than the instant-access standing-up counter -- but the counter-argument makes sense: when you need to get something out of the fridge, like butter, condiments, beer, you'll probably have ingredients being prepped on the counter already.

I vote to have the frig be the pullout drawer, which will end up being much more convenient than lifting up the counter-top panels to access the food.

Having to move things around while prepping food, just to grab a minor item from the fridge would be a pain. Be that as it may, you'll need to label the tops of the items down at floor level or you'll be for ever grabbing the wrong things.
@HunterJE
@HunterJE 3 месяца назад
Also in a fridge you're much more likely to need any given item at any given time, which that the pull out drawer with side-access facilitates, while in a chest-loading deep freeze you can put stuff you expect not to need any time soon at the bottom and stuff you might need to access sooner/more regularly on top of it...

When I saw the first few episodes of this restoration I thought well that shouldn't be too difficult, just replace all the rotten timber and get those sails up. Now as the finish is in sight, boy oh boy what a project this has been, every single piece of timber(apart from the transom) has been replaced even the lead keel has been recast. The mind bogles at the shear amount of detail gone into the fitout, beautiful cabinetry and varnished timber everywhere, a complex power system, there must be five miles of wiring in this vessel. All thru it all Leo your enthusiasm and can do approach have propelled the build along, of course there have been many skilled workers assisting and all seem to share your wonderful attitude. Fair winds and happy sailing.

I loved this episode! Leo is like an excited kid showing off all these cool things. Great progress! However, i do agree with the draw being the fridge and the countertop being a freezer. Mainly so all the cold air doesnt exit the freezer every time you open it as chest freezers are more efficient.

On the fridge , freezer argument I agree with Patrick!!!. The freezer is multifunctional, useful for vegetables, meat, ice cream and much more suitable to the cooking area, the fridge can only be used for beer, possibly cider (he is from the south west) and much moor suitable for the drinking area 👍

A tip to make the freezer lid fit the freezer tightly: Add some slack when you attach the freezer lids to the wood counter top. This way the door seal will seal properly as the wood moves.

I'm with Leo on the frig/freezer debate. Opening a drawer when heeled over can be a pain, plus a frig is opened many more times than a freezer, so a frig drawer would waste energy as it will spill the cold much more when opened than a top lid. Also, glad to see the rounded faceplate on the head door latch assembly, being fitted into the square cut mortise, was just for fitting purposes and ended up getting a square faceplate. Details. Details.

Since no one has commented yet, I say cover the lower unit face. You could make cover similar to the other doors with the floating center to allow for expansion and contraction. Then either paint, varnish, or mixture of the two. You’ll have to get creative with the cutout for the handle.

The budding flower has started to bloom! That goes for Leo as well as the Tally Ho. Leo, we love the way you envision, manage, encourage, and developed the courage to take on the huge challenge of building/rebuilding such a beautiful boat. You started with nearly nothing but a shell of a hull and a few coins in your pocket. You have been doing so much for so long with so little, that you could build just about any boat with nearly nothing! In fact, you and your wonderful, talented crew ought to continue building/rebuilding wooden boats and documenting the builds for posterity and for my own selfish viewing pleasure, and possibly 479,000 other viewers, as well! Great story telling!

I bought a wood stove just a bit larger than the one on your boat. Painted it burgundy, with a high heat paint. I bought stainless exhaust pipe, used on trucks. (Thicker metal and less issue with corrosion or burn through). My surround is the same as what you plan. Cement board with a wood grain ceramic tile over the cement boards. Great progress on the ship.

After some more thought, put the fridge in the counter. The lower unit should be the freezer. Yes it’ll be harder to access while cooking, but if you’re tacked over or being tossed around with larger swells, it will be a pain to open or close that lower unit, especially when full of food stuff. Under the counter fridge is the right play.
