IL-2 Battle of Normandy has launched and I decided to hop back into IL-2 after a very long break. This was my first real sortie and it actually came out to be a very nice one with some good take aways so in celebration of the launch, I decided to make a video. This should be interesting to both DCS and IL-2 players. I hope you enjoy.

This channel focuses on combat flight simulators like DCS World and IL-2 Great Battles. If you play either of these games or flight simulators like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and enjoy aviation and dogfighting then this channel is for you. Even if you are coming from War Thunder and BF2042, you can learn to fly these combat flight simulators.
I play using TrackIR5 and do not use VR, this means that I am able to capture footage for tutorials, how-to-guides and other multiplayer tips and tricks video in 1440p.
Eagle Dynamics has made it easier than ever to learn DCS because the game is technically free. The game has the F-15, F-16, Su-27, Mig-29, Mig-21, Mig-19, Mig-15, F-86 Sabre, Jf-17, Mirage 2000, F-18 Hornet and F-14 Tomcat. There are soon other modules coming such as the Mig-23 and F-4. Lastly, there are helicopters like the Mi-24 Hind and AH-64 Apache.

The map is very nice and much larger than I expected. For those that play jets only, I hope this video acts as inspiration to try out in warbirds in either IL-2 or DCS. The fundamentals you learn in WWII will always stay with you and apply to all. For IL-2, I would recommend the Finnish Server or Combat Box, for DCS I would recommend the No.20 WWII Server.

Can definitely attest to this. Started with the f18 in DCS and learned all the systems but didnt leanr amythijg about knife fights. Had to go to IL2 and slow it down a bit but once you have it in IL2, it translate very easily from props to jets

Well at least my poor efforts can be a lesson to others. I was the Tempest that you shot down first. I'm not sure why they didn't show up but I had a couple of 1000lb bombs so wasn't really flying cover as such. Ironically enough, my VR glitched out just before you started shooting which is why you see me wobbling about. My screen went blank next thing I was dead. I actually thought I collided with the guy to my left hence the "WTF happened?". I was a little relieved that I was shot down as there is nothing worse than crashing into a wingman.

All the planes merging over the channel around the same time reminds me of when IL-2 was just the Stalingrad expansion. Constant dogfights over Stalingrad city, very fun to patrol as a fighter, but very dangerous as an attacker or bomber.

@@Enigma89 I'm thinking a B-25 or B-26 are the most likely. They've just added a bunch of new skins for the B-25, like a USAAF desert, USAAF olive drab/unpainted, and also two VVS skins. Maybe it could indicate some future plans?

All manouvers and your gunnery skill are great. 10/10. Only thing when you have engine damage and trying to reach base that is far go below 0.8 ata, manually open rads and keep temp to 80C. That will prolong life of your damage engine.. 😀👍

Thanks, I do feel bad because this channel started as an IL-2 channel but the game has been a bit fixed in position and I found myself playing DCS more. I still love warbirds so I will sprinkle these in when I play il2.

The IL2 devs have mentioned that doing 4 engine bombers is not possible. There is only so much ai the game can handle in mp before it falls apart. For example getting a lot of moving ships in multiplayer is not easy while this was standard in '46. The UI is quite good in that game but you are so limited in the targets you can have in MP

The big screens and uber high res actively make spotting harder. I go against the grain and already play in 2K, most people downgrade themselves to 1k to boost their spotting.

For multiplayer, DCS is great (though IL-2 has a lot more planes). For single-player warbirding, though, IL-2 is so much better that it's not even a contest.

Do you fly any DCS Warbirds? I just started and while ground attack and wrecking (and getting wrecked by) bomber formations is fun, I don't find fighter to fighter combat to be much fun (yet?) How does IL2 compare? I'm playing single player.

IL-2 is for a WWII experience. DCS Warbirds is for an experience for that specific plane. The modeling in DCS is impressive but because they focus so much on fidelity, they do not have a lot of planes modeled. I personally think IL-2 Is a great game and worth it and I have heard the single player content is great because of the campaign system they have. I do not play single player so I would maybe ask reddit as I am just not super familiar.

If you're wanting single player, go with IL-2. It has quick missions, advanced quick missions (which have a ton of different types of missions and the world is 'alive' so there are fighters, bombers, transports, and ground activity all doing their own thing, basically a One-Off Sand Box), pilot campaigns that can span the entire war, or just a few months, and then both official and community made missions and campaigns. I own both IL2 and DCS, and have the 109K4 in DCS with one of the paid campaigns. that is fun (other than AI issues) but otherwise, there's not much to 'do' in DCS WWII other than multiplayer, and as Enigma says, there's not a lot of planes, and the choices are kind of odd so I'm not sure how 'balanced' multiplayer is in DCS. And, finally, when you are ready for multiplayer, Combat Box and Finnish Virtual Pilots both offer great missions with an immersive AI ATC 'radio' on CB, and a dynamic war environment on FVP. There's a lot of videos out there to check out. Like you, I'm not to into PvP fighter action, but I do like to hop in a 110 or 410 and sneak off by myself and blow something up and then see if I can get away from whoever finds me!

My biggest thing is that like you said, the il2 engine is a bit hamstrung, the maps really leave something to be desired as far as VFR flying is concerned. the newer DCS maps are a bit easier to learn various landmarks to really "know" where you are, where in il2 I always feel like I'm looking at generic city after generic city, placed on a generic tile and everything is just so "blah" and bland.

I noticed that the cities along the coast had more custom looking ports so it made it easier. Navigating is a bit tricky in IL2 for the reasons you mentioned though, on long flights i typically will measure and time my own waypoints.

Is IL-2 worth buying BoS and Normandy as well, or would you recommend just getting Normandy direct as a standalone from the IL-2 site? Been in DCS for a couple weeks, have heard IL-2 is a better starting point progress quickly with learning flight maneuvering and tactics. Def want to play multiplayer, am curious if Normandy by itself would have enough people on servers

I like your flying. When I say fire you are firing before I get the whole word out. Other people I watch fire after I get the whole word out and barely clip the tail or miss entirely. But you know deflection shooting pretty good. I will be watching all your prop clips, but I hate watching jet flying. Missiles are boring.

Thanks for sharing your POV, i appreciate it. I do think my gunnery is decent but if you want to see great Gunnery you should search for Krupinski's videos, his gunnery is on another level. I will try to make a balance between WWII and jets stuff. I think WWII stuff is really my main passion but with how slow the development of IL-2 GB is, it is hard to keep super interested in it as it feels a bit stale after a while. I will be doing some more IL-2 1946 videos though over time.

agree with your assessment of the IL2 engine. I haven't actually gotten Normandy myself as it simply wasn't worth it for me. IL2 is not only starting to look dated, it simply does look dated in comparison to other flightsims. The devs really need to update the visuals of the engine or switch to/create a new one, otherwise they simply won't be able to stay competitive in this incredibly niche market. Jason especially keeps telling people on the Forums that we should play DCS if we liked it better, and that some point, if IL2 stays on the same course as it has in the recent years, I'm afraid that is simply what people will do.

For the past few days I came back to IL-2 multiplayer and the HUGE issue is still there. Spotting in this game is absolute DOGSHIT. Especially against the ground. I'm looking at the enemy plane that is flying low and then poof it's like it disappeared. I just can't see it anymore. I've tried everything. I've switched to 720p resolution yesterday and it helps quite a bit against targets up in the sky that are far away but it doesn't help at all with the ground blending issue. I'm not giving this game another go until I hear that they've tackled this issue.

Using blurred ground textures and changing the gamma to 0.7 really helps with this. You need to make a bigger contrast between the planes vs the ground. Spotting leaves a lot to be desired that for sure.
