Today I'm snowboarding with Rob from SportRx and taking him down his first ever black diamond. Four days ago Rob did his first snowboard run of the season in about a year. He's been working on snowboarding with more speed and more confidence. I've got two simple tips to help Rob with his first black diamond. The first is to to start on his toe edge. The heel turn is the easier of the two and by starting on your toes you set yourself up to be successful on your first turn. The second tip is to commit to the toe turn and face your chest to the top of the run. This will get the toe turn around so you can control your speed and get ready for the next turn. If you have any questions about snowboarding on black diamonds please leave them in the comments. Check out Rob and SportRx on their RU-vid channel for goggle and sunglasses videos. Thanks for watching!

Ben M ah yes a comment I have been looking for. I needed to know that was possible. How many hours did you ride per day, and how many days per week.

Very interesting to know. I just had day 4 myself, all but one self taught off videos like this. I'm already bombing down the greens (maybe not quite as fast as some but still faster than the majority) and am reasonably confident getting some decent speed on blues. Only been riding one day a week for the past month though so that makes things tough. Still though even then I've noticed massively less fatigue after today now that my technique is getting loosened up and I'm not trying harder than I need to.

It's a good video. Condition varies from area. If you are in the northeast, black diamonds are much harder due to the icy condition. The video looks like blue in northeast. Be safe....

I'm days into my 4th season and finally getting confident with that toe-side turn. I was always scared to commit because I thought I'd fall on my face (which I spent all of my 1st and 2nd season doing). As it turns out, when you don't commit, you end up catching an edge and falling.....HARD.

There really seems to be a wide spectrum of what difficulty resorts designate to be a "black diamond." I've seen black diamonds at my home resort that look about like this or even slightly easier in slope gradient, but then others that are WAY worse with super narrow, steep, bumpy terrain through the forest.
@CorginShep
@CorginShep 6 лет назад
That's because not every resort uses the double/triple black designation. Blacks in general are generally at a minimum of 40% grade and anything past that is up to the resort (other factors are like if it is a mogul field, etc.). Also, slopes are ranked by the hardest section of that slope. So if your resort doesn't want to add multiple grades then they'll just put the entire slope as black even if it's only for a short section. Look at Mammoth's map and you can see that this slope (ricochet) on the far left side is rated black then goes to a black/blue which is just a borderline black.

Once I was on a blue just kinda warming up to the snow and crap and I accidentally cut of onto a steep ass double black diamond. As I was going down (extremely scared) I cut to close to the edge and hit a cliff. Only a broken ankle and 2 hours of waiting for the ski patrol to notice me and help me up and drive me to the hospital which was 3 hours away 😎

Nice work Rob. Looking good out there. Bend your knees and keep that up and you'll progress very quickly. I remember my first black diamond was just more intimidating when I saw the drop off. Once I was on it I was like oh you just pick up speed quicker every thing is basically the same. I got this. Ice sucks on black diamonds. I have had a rough time with ice only on black diamonds. I spend so much time on my edges and I often don't see it. Having the proper lens for lighting would probably have benefited me. Thanks sport rx. My goggles will be here in a couple of weeks or so.

Yo snowboard pro camp I got a question. How do you get from the skill level that rob is at or maybe a little bit more comfortable, to stronger rider? I've been snowboarding in the Midwest where the "mountains" are laughable at best. I've just been trying to progress with jumps but I'm wondering, what can I do to improve my regular riding? I don't really know what steps I should be taking to get from intermediate to more of a styled/impressive sort of riding. Thanks man, btw I've been watching since 50000 subs, keep it up!

Howdy! Quick question for anyone who wants to help! I recently did my first Black Diamond Run and it was all powder, and it felt amazing. My only problem was I could not get my toe side turns around fast enough due to the heavy powder therefor making me fall multiple times. Does anyone have any tips for getting your board around fast on steep Black runs, groomed or fresh powder? Anything and everything will be very appreciated! :)
@GC16199
@GC16199 6 лет назад
Try to jump up a little bit and make a more pronounced up and down movement if you like when you're turning, this will unweigh your board a bit and makes it easier to turn. It's almost like jumping a small 180. Steep runs with low speed means short turns. As the speed is higher you can widen you're turns but then you really have to turn on you're edges like carving.

@G2thesecondpower
@G2thesecondpower 5 лет назад
Learn to rock from edge to edge when going "straight". Bend both knees and get a little lower help and you steer with your back foot well always bending that front knee into your front edge turn. If you feel yourself going too fast spill some speed by breaking a little bit on your heel edge--you can break on your toe edge to it just means they're going backwards a bit. When you're going really fast and you wouldn't want to slow yourself down a bit it's easier just to dump a little speed when you go on to your heel a bit. Anyway hope that helps--going fast on the straights is actually harder to learn and then turning on steeper terrain--at least it was for me; so this is coming from somebody that has freshly learned how to let that board get ripping without automatically having a mental freak out ;)! It takes time, and good equipment helps. I start learning last year on an older mostly camber board that caught edges if I wasn't careful, and it had crappy bindings and I had crappy boots. I bought a new fairly stable CamRock board, new boots and some wicked new bindings and it's been a game-changer for feeling confident and stable on the board.

No disrespect or anything at all like that; maybe it was the way the camera angle was but that didn't really look very steep! I know that steepness is not all that goes into making something a black run--but dang man we have some blue and black runs here on Mt. Washy that look alooooot steeper than that; (definitely not trying to downplay any accomplishments here; I thought some of our blue runs were terrifying only a few months ago :) ) and I am scared of those Moguli steep beasts!

I'm also working on speed + control. You always want to be on an edge. If your board is flat it will go wherever the hell it wants. Second.. lower yourself down enough to where your back hand can touch the board. I found that this position offers good control and if i wipe out, im already close to the ground. I'm hoping that as my balance and control improves, i will crouch less and less.

It's pretty steep but mellows out in the middle. It's not as hard as cornice bowl or daves run. Check it out in the Mammoth map right on the left side of the north face. It starts off black then in the middle turns to a hard blue.

Not anymore but I'm still not bending that much! If it's not shaking for me am I then bending right? The reason why I'm wondering is because I want to improve and also run a 45 degree called "väggen" how do I know if I'm bending right?
@bluesclooey7897
@bluesclooey7897 6 лет назад
Noes You shouldn't be on a 45 degree slope until you get the amount of experience you need to know how much your knees should be bending, but you can't always keep your knees bent at the same angle, you need to be fluent at changing the amount you have bent your knees over every bump.

A skier broke his nose and right arm at that one slope,( the next day) And the first time i went down i was hella scared, it was icy and like 2 weeks before I "got rid" of my steel edges (like sanded then down or what you call it) Beacuse I had to, to fix my board So.. To summarise it Around 75-80° hill+ No steel edges+ Only 1 1/2 year experience of snowboarding at the time = One hella scared dude

@BrandonGraham
@BrandonGraham 6 лет назад
Andy Parker In my limited experience, width has little to do with the rating (I've seen some really narrow greens). Seems more to do with skill. This was probably steeper than a blue. Might have been on the easy side for black diamond, but probably still difficult to intermediate riders because of the angle.

The Viewer They use the same system in all of the bigger slopes in Sweden. Weird that they wouldnt use it in norway, nothing bad with it.

Is that what Americans call Black Diamond? I'm not sure if its the video that makes it look underwhelming but I've been down steeper and more difficult reds in Europe! Not trying to be a douche and one up, just making an observation.
