You’ve heard of the Renault Scenic, right? It was something of a household name through the nineties and noughties, having been a phenomenal success as an affordable and brilliantly utilitarian, if rather boring MPV. Then the family crossover-SUV came along, and the MPV died off - so much so that the Scenic was discontinued altogether in the UK by 2019. But now it’s back and - you guessed it - it’s morphed into a stylish crossover-SUV that’s out to topple the popular Peugeot 3008, Skoda Enyaq iV and Nissan Qashqai.
The Renault Scenic E-Tech only gets one powertrain, which features a 215bhp electric motor on the front wheels, and a 91kWh lithium-ion battery with an 87kWh usable capacity to power it.
This brings an official WLTP range of up to 379 miles, which is seriously impressive and is usefully better than you’ll get from the Skoda Enyaq iV, VW ID.4, Peugeot e-3008 and even the much more expensive Tesla Model Y. A smaller battery Scenic is offered in mainland Europe, but it’s unlikely to come to the UK.
Charging speeds are good on the Scenic, too, with a peak 150kW charging rate being on a par with or better than many of those rivals, although the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 will charge at over 200kW. When plugged into a powerful enough rapid charger, the Scenic can suck up enough electricity for a 20-80% charge in around 25 minutes. A 7kW home charger will manage a full charge from nearly empty in some 13 hours.

Renault are on a real roll at the moment. Compare the rear access and legroom of the Scenic to a Peugeot 3008, STELLANTIS need to get their act together.

It’s great, but will they do what they’ve done with the Zoe and stopped selling parts individually so now if you have a small circuit board failure ok the charge controller it’s £2500 for another…

Effin sellouts, MPVs are much more practical than SUVs, people are just dense. I love when I ask some of my younger, single colleagues why an SUV instead of a sporty hatchback or a sedan, and get easier to enter as an answer. Are we giving birth to geriatric patients nowadays?

@@badbasic if you can see some of my other comments on EVs, I would want a decent estate that can do 300-350 miles, however the MG5, Astra and 308 fall short of that and i5 is £70k plus. We’re not really blessed with much choice in the EV world for family sized cars that aren’t SUVs, I lost track of the number of friends I had who said “we need a bigger car now we’re having kids” and simply got a Qashqai or something equally boring with no actual further room like an estate car would have given… That being said, I’m allowed my opinion that is is actually a decent looking motor, what I didn’t say is that it might suffer from the Peugeot effect for me (looks really cool and edgy on release, but once I’ve seen a few on the road it starts to look dated…)

@@alxdava2004 just checked this... 2012 face-lifted entry-level Scenic was ~20k... with inflation etc, that would be close to 30k today... So this version is a *bit* more expensive, with a lot more tech 'as standard' than that older Scenic.

We will be looking for a new EV around May/June next year. A couple of months back the Skoda Enyaq was the most likely option. Then the e-3008 became a possibility. But now I think the Renault Scenic is at the top of the list. 14-15 months to go before the decision is made but it's going to take something special to beat that Scenic. I really, really didn't want a grey car but that matte shadow grey paint option is too nice!!

There’ll be a lot of change, so spend the time playing with the EVs. On thing I hadn’t thought about how many Porton the phone integration is as well as mapping apps that let you support multi stop plans, schedule around trips-and let you save the roots for later. The one built into my car (BMW) isn’t up to this. It is probably fine for driving across the UK in the diesel model where you can decide which service station to pull into on a whim, but on an EV you want to plan ahead and tell the car where you’ll be stopping, so it knows to heat the battery. Ideally, you also want the passenger to be looking at Zapmap to see if the chargers are actually working there or whether you should pull off the motorway and hit something else. Of course in 14 to 15 months, things will be radically better there too: Even in the space of six months charging along the M4 and M5 has got way better.

Original Scenic owner here, bought one way back in 1999! They were great cars for the time and truly innovative with their folding/removable seats. Kids grown up now, but great family car at the time. This new one looks great and whilst it doesn’t have the flexibility of the old ones, there are some lovely touches in there and certainly a much better proposition than an e3008 and maybe edging out an Enyaq/ID4 too. As a company car driver might be tempted by one of these if the leasing rates are good.

Whilst I like the Peugeot external design, Stellantis continue to make the same mistake... They believe their EVs are worth £10,000 too much! Every model Vauxhall, Peugeot & Citroën are the same £35k to £50k! They then discount them and destroy their own residual values. My money is on the Scenic...👍👍👍. But more than that ... Renault are smashing it in 2024... just look at their R5 EV!!

@michaelheadley2041 True... Renault are on the design and on the money for 2024/5... I think 2022/3 it was Hyundai/Kia but now their prices are too steep. Stellantis are OK but simply too expensive to buy and devaluation too high to privately own... Tesla are simply... Tesla like or hate Marmite cars.

How the engine is build, how the car looks under what are the constructions used and isf the car is sharing parts and designs with some other car models and brands and how everything is build in.

I will put this on my list! Preferable to the Ariya that it shares a lot with, not keen on the Nissan's styling, pricing or complex range. The lure of more powerful RWD models like the Enyaq, Model Y or EV6 might be too much, until you look at the Scenic 87kwh Tecno. At £40,995 it is a lot of money but it is way cheaper than the rivals.

Makes you wonder who would buy the Austral now. A little like who will buy the Clio when the 5 comes out. Renault seem to have a certain amount of duplication in their range and unusually their electric models are better and more desirable than their ICE models

they’re going to need to start considering the 40k luxury tax band which will apply to EVs from I think April next year? £500 extra on your VED each year will mean cars that are just over the threshold will get people pausing before buying.

Lease on my Ioniq 5 se is up in about a year. This is very close to the top of my list for my next one! Scenic, mach-e, Ioniq 5 (again) or Ford Explorer. thanks for the video helped a lot!

The ride on the Mach-e I drove was truly unbearably hard. I made smooth roads look bumpy and never settled. I hope they have fixed it. Think it was the long range version. So disappointed.

Love to have known the rear seat room when someone 6'4" is driving as a difference. All the reviewers on the channel need to bring a water bottle to show where they fit/don't fit as that is important for most owners. Many channels do bring one to show that. Is there a deadzone between the footrest and the brake pedal, as in enough room to put your foot on your floor rather than the footrest? Real world range based on your efficiency as stated of 3.3mi/kWh on the 87kWh pack gets you about 287mi, assuming the 87kWh is usable not gross battery size.

Given some of the crazy prices that are regularly attached to new EVs, this does is very good value for money. Bravo Renault, lovely design, practical and value for money. Another contender to replace my ID.3

Drove this car last night. Been looking for a new EV for at least a year now having been an EV driver for 11 years. Renault have thought through absolutely everything in regards to this EV. The RFID card system, battery preconditioning and navigation system, effectively allowing use of multiple charger point service providers is brilliant. The only question I have is how does it tow? The sales rep quoted towing loads, but We couldn’t see a tow hitch. There were 4 in the vehicle last night, two at 6’5”, and we had plenty of room. The Iconic with the solarbay roof is particularly appealing. Not cheap though!

Thanks. Looks like a well-priced, stylish EV for families who can afford the monthly payments. It’s a good deal, lighter than the Peugeot e3008. Only advantage for the Peugeot may be interior style and quality. Deals may level out the price difference a bit? A Model Y carries a lot more stuff.

I'm a BMW 330e user and my lease comes to an end next year and I can't wait to order the new Scenic!! At this price for fully electric SUV/ crossover? Bargain! Love the looks, the spec is awesome, super excited!!

The e-3008 has more battery capacity, though - 73 vs. 60, and 98 vs. 87. Also, you don't get a dual motor option with the Scenic, and the e-3008's coupé shape makes it slightly less draggy. Still, the Scenic does weigh a fair amount less, and if you're wanting more space, the e-5008 is going to be even more expensive. I can only hope that the Peugeot offerings have more kit and better material quality, because it feels as if they're trying to compete in a different sector and it's likely to go horribly wrong for them.

Based on the WLTP figures, the range of the Long Range Scenic is only 56 miles less than the e-3008. Is an extra 56 miles really worth £7,000 to £8,000? The LR e-3008 is also slower and as mentioned in the review, less practical too.

More battery is only good if it equates to more range... otherwise, it's just more mass to haul around, and it costs more to fill up.

The car looks superb in Alpine trim. Unfortunately currently in UK the the panoramic sunroof and 360 surround camera only available for the iconic trim, not the Alpine trim.

'Perso' is something they've kept from French. It's a common abbreviation of 'personnel'. It can also have a connotation of a selfish little pleasure.

I test drove a rhd Iconic being toured around the UK by Renault. Much roomier than Megane but that beats the Scenic in style which is a bit Peugeot-ish. Very quiet and smooth but in Eco I saw we only got 2.8. I also found it pretty sluggish.My Ec4 is much nippier in Eco. In Comfort you really take off though. Boot and rear legroom great but that plastic holder for tablet does not look durable. I wish the headlining wasn't dark grey. In Techno version without the panoramic roof would be pretty dark. I was driving in misty conditions with the dusk falling but the steering wheel controls weren't illuminated. I also found the drivers screen far too busy. It didn't seem like that when I drove a Megane. The Iconic with metallic paint is not far off £47 k. For that you can get a bigger Ariya. Be interesting to look at a Techno in June when they arrive.

It's impressive. Never been a Renault fan but this is really good. I love the rear console too, really well thought out. Playing with phones it what almost all passengers do. It really is an alternative to a Model Y.

Excellent review. (Wish I was on holiday in sunnier climbs as well!) Looks great and a lovely cabin design and practicalities,.Just a shame no true 1 pedal drive mode (Why not?!) and no frunk (although admittedly not massively needed as the boot and cabin are huge)

Wow. Looks like Renault grabbed all the best designers to build this one. Very nice. Lots of room in the rear and since it wasn't mentioned in this video, there isn't space in the front. (bonnet) I have to say, the range sounds great. I'd like to see more. Thanks for this review.

An identikit suv.. used to be something with an identity and specific purpose. Not that I’m a cynic honest. Nearly as practical as a Berlingo then. Our car new in 2019 cost 16.5k for straight (pre registered ok but…).

Immediately before watching this I watched another reviewers review of the new BMW iX2 - BMW have seriously missed the mark with that car compared to the electric Scenic. This car is way more practical and way better value for money and IT LOOKS GOOD unlike the IX2

I like this car and I like your video Nicola, well done! About the pano roof, it is probably a laminated glass with a really thin layer of liquid crystals (I work in the automotive glazing industry). I personally HATE that volume stalk (the right side of the steering wheel is too full imh) but apart from that, it looks super nice this car. Fun fact: "perso" in italian means "lost", and it made me laugh hard when you said the Scenic has a "lost" mode :)

The volume stalk was never a problem for me, I drove different Renault's that had one, starting with Megane 2, Latitude, Laguna 3 and Talisman, it doesn't get in the way. It takes a bit of time to learn the buttons but once you do it's really great. It beats the steering wheel controls, you don't have to look at it. The reviewers usually don't like it and it's normal for someone first time in the car. The right side only appears too full, I think I would like the wipers to be in the some place they always were. Way better than a Tesla I think.

@@razvanlex yeah I understand getting used to that, it won't be a deal breaker, however I drove some Renaults in the past and I didn't like it, I prefer a couple of buttons on the string wheel. Also, I think it's not worth having an additional stalk, especially if you have one for the gears as well, but this is just my opinion.

​@@Dawheel90 I get your point, but if you test one you would understand> drove many cars and also owned some Renault's. There are buttons on the steering wheel but they are used for other things. Usually on the left now is the adaptive cruise control and on the right the phone, mileage computer, voice control and so on. I tested the Megane E-Tech and they are ok, not a problem. That is the difference between having an opinion based on video/pictures and a review and driving the real thing. But of course, it's your opinion and you prefer things in a different way. It depends on how adaptable our brain is.

@@razvanlex yeah I tested the Megane e-tech (loved the car) and the volume stalk was not a problem, just I don't like it, I think there are better ways to control things. I ended up buying an MG4 but it was mostly due to price difference, not because of the stalk 😁

@@Dawheel90 Again, I understand you. But you have to realise that being something new for you and different it's normal not to like it until you get used to it. On a test drive for you it was a problem. For me as a Renault owner, not anymore. Better ways I don't think so. If you are in a large roundabout or anytime the steering wheel it's not straight it's a problem with steering wheel controls. My current car has audio control also on the steering wheel and sometimes (albeit rarely) it's a problem. Especially when you wont the volume down or mute while you park the car and the steering wheel is not in a straight position. The Renault audio stalk it's in the same position and easier to control in this situation.

Shame we can't order this configuration in the UK, if you want the panoramic roof it only comes in the white/grey interior (it's a family car after all!) Come on Renault, give us the same options as Europe...

Scenic is definitely the wrong name for this car. It's your average SUV, not a dedicated "family " vehicle. First and second Scenic generation use to have very useful and variable rear seat solution, not available anymore 😕

A fun review and thank you. I expect the platform Renault are using is the one they share with Nissan. So the comparison with Peugeot will be a comparison between Renault/Nissan and Stellantis. On this showing the Renault/Nissan platform is going to be highly competitive. Renault have clearly made the right decision to use Google software where you have only to look at how VW still struggles with its in house software and an UI/UX which is not as good as this.

The flush doorhandles is a terrible trend for areas where winters are cool they keep freezing. While its easy to heat the car cabin the door handles are still frozen.

Oh… Nicola, you are my favorite presenter. Hands down. Speaking of hands, how did you nick your thumb? The Scenic looks great! I like the digital rear view mirror in my I5, and I swear you'd get used to it. The only thumbs down for me with the Scenic: no one-pedal driving regen. Bummer. Ah… damn… wish we'd get them on this side of the pond.

I'll wait until solid stat batteries are available. Just think it is too early and early adopters always seem to pay a high price. The technology seems to evolve very quickly.

I don’t like the SUV shape but otherwise there's a lot to like about this. I'm a bit unsure about the boot...volume is equivalent to ID4 but with a lot of depth, so it's obviously not as long and may be a bit lacking for bigger items. I'd have to test it for real.
