Renault are on somewhat of a roll recently. Not only is the Megane one of our favourite electric cars (Bryan is still crying about his one going back to Renault) but the new 5 and hotly anticipated 4 are cars that we are just gagging to drive. But the latest electric car from the French firm is a rather sensible, and not very clever, mid-sized crossover just like everyone else has in their range. And they've even dug out an old name for it; Scenic. So what could this possibly offer us that we haven't seen before? Bryan drew the short straw and flew out to Spain to find out because as always, it is the AutoEV Road Test Review that can be trusted to deliver the only verdict that you need if you are interested in buying a new electric car.

I have had 3 Scenics over the years and this is, like the others, a good family car, which does happen to be electric. I recently managed to test drive a right hand drive version (adapted from the left hand drive production line) and it is a superb drive. I have one on order.

@@jimfisk6302that's great thanks. I only drive Renaults as their seat suits my dodgy spine. The seats are flat all the way down rather than a curve that pushes into your spine which gives me pain. From what I see it looks like my Scenic MK3. I hope the auto wipers are better. They just don't do work properly on the Scenic MK3. Drives me nuts. Manual selection is best & gives you choice. I resort too flicking it on light rain.

Why on earth does a family car need 19 or 20 inch wheels? 17 inch rims and taller tyres would improve the ride and efficiency.

As a Megane E-Tech owner I can see that Renault have gone one step further in their Renaulution with the Scenic. I can understand why it’s great looking and clever design made it the judges choice for European Car of the Year. My only criticism I have is that the lip below the tailgate is far too high for a family car that is likely to be carrying dogs and bikes. BTW I have been told that the 2025 UK spec Megane is going to get the bigger Infotainment screen from the Scenic and Austral and the same driver binnacle display. It grates a bit that I bought my car before the price reduction and the option of the Heat pump plus pack - and now the larger centre screen. I have though got the benefit of the 5 year warranty.

You are correct about 0-60 times. Modern driving conditions mean that unless you have a track focussed car there's no point in having more power than is required to join motorways and overtake safely. A three second 0-60 just means higher insurance costs because it's too fast to enjoy safely on public roads.

I made a testdrive in a megane e tech today, and its crazy fast compared to my mazda 6, which is already enough for a daily driver. We are going for this scenic because the kids dont fit in the megane...

I think Renault dealerships should give classes on how to use the car. The braking regen thing is hard to understand & seems dangerous to me & you use paddles on the wheel as well. Braking is important obviously. So much to learn & charging. Don't charge to 100% to protect btys. Thank god for RU-vid. Up here in Scotland there aren't any in showrooms. Renault are frustrating in how UK gets treated I feel.

Sure, but if it is too simple to disable over-speed now mandatory warnings, the regulators will just make impossible to do it. Maybe it would have been better if disabling the sound was automatically enabling a huge visual warning when speed is over speed limits. Speed is a huge factor in around 30% of all fatal accidents, in a city most death would be avoided if people were respecting speed limits.

Ah yes, you noticed! I filmed that competitor section many times just trying to remember every car in the same market and price point! And probably the most important one (the Ariya!) was the one I forgot! I had to get the car back to the launch venue and only realised after I got back to the UK I had left it out!!! Interestingly, I retired from driving the Scenic to an Enyaq on my driveway that I have been filming this week. Has made for a good comparison!

I think it looks better than most of its rivals. Only gripe I would have is that it doesn’t seem to have electric seats (not that I can see on Renault website) and if it’s a family car with potentially 2 different driving positions then that makes it a bit of a bind when you swap drivers

Please note: Espirit Alpine model in the UK does not have the panoramic roof or 360 camera & rear view camera. But it does have better seats and wheels than the Iconic

Unfortunately because people want crossovers. Manufacturers will only build what people buy. That being said, I am going to be reviewing the new Peugeot E308 SW in a month, so maybe estates will make a comeback?

I realise that to an extent, but given the popularity of the MG5 and the anticipation of the upcoming VW estate, a cheap option of engineering an extension at the rear as in the 'old days' must be viable (imho).@@AutoEV

So enjoy your reviews Bryan, very thorough. I'd love to get a more objective idea of interior noise levels on many of these EVs, maybe some actual Db measurements on smooth and rough pavement in your neighborhood? Also, in your Renault reviews and others you talk about the sustainablility design ethos of using various materials and yes, I do care about this but hey, if sustainability is worth talking about then you should give us an idea of what type of battery is being used and where it's sourced: Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) batteries sourced in China vs. iron-phospate (LFP) batteries or non-Chinese sourced NMC batteries, there's a big difference in the environmental cost of producing these different batteries. I'm in USA, but I do enjoy hearing about all these vehicles we don't get: Renault, Skoda, BYD, MG, etc.

Nice review, and nice car. I just don't agree when you say that the Scenic is cheaper than the Tesla model Y with a longer range (38:05). For the price I went on both configuration tools and with the same equipment the prices are the same. For the range it is a bit more complex, yes the range on one charge is higher with the Scenic, thanks to the bigger battery, but it is not what matters. On a daily basis 625 km or 535 km changes nothing since the average distance driven per day in Europe is 30 km, and I guess even less in the UK. And on a long trip, what matters is the charge speed or more precisely the time you need before being able to continue to the next fast charger or your destination, and then the Tesla definitely wins. And of course the Tesla has other arguments at this price, eg it is all wheel drive, there is a big frunk, the charge price and convenience (plug and charge) at Superchargers, the performance even if I agree that it is not the most important for a family car, etc. So it is nice to have this Scenic, I am sure that people who will buy it will be very happy, but the model Y is also quite a great choice for the family at the same price. Anyway, the more choice the better for a smooth transition away from fossil fuel.

This is probably the best family car of those three. The EV6 is a better drivers car. The Ioniq 5 is really spacious, but feels very big. I’d say the Scenic is probably the best all rounder as a family car.

Things will get interesting when renault brings this to Australia, probably in about a year. I think they should bring it faster than that. Because right now the Model Y dominates the market space and Australia doesn't have VW SUVs, Ayria isn't here. If a buyer wants to buy from a trusted brand there isn't many options.

I need to change company cars early next year and had been ear-marking an Enyaq 85 as my new one, but very interested to see what the costs will be for the Scenic. Will try one out in the summer - sounds like it’s a very nice car and love the red colour. Only thing I’d need to check is boot depth - it looks like that high boot space figure is due to the deep lip and as we have 2 fair sized dogs I would prefer a deeper boot front to back.

The Scenic v's Enyaq is a very valid test. I returned from driving the Scenic to having an Enyaq 60 on test and it made me remember how good the Skoda is. I think I prefer the Renault to drive, and I really like the Google OS and think their sustainability message is much better than Skoda. Plus that range from the bigger battery is a big tick in the box IF it proves to be efficient enough. However, I think the practicality of the Enyaq's load space length may be the deciding factor for you.

@@AutoEVI’ve driven an Enyaq and it’s a nice car and a particularly spacious boot, but l I think I’d prefer the Scenic for looks/packaging and tech. We’ll see - might come down to price anyway as won’t know the leasing rates for a while on our company scheme.

Who knows? AllI can say is that Renault assure me that the efficiency of the car has greatly increased over the Megane, which was my only real issue with that car over the 3 months I had mine.

There is a tool on Renault's site to answer your question, you can select the Scenic battery size, speed, temperature, driving mode, etc. I wrote a comment with the link hours ago but Google has just deleted it since sadly Google does not like links that send people outside of the Google environment.

The boot sill makes a practical model, completely useless. It is funny the Kona is tiny but with a flat load bay makes it easy to load big heavy items..

It's the only real bugbear I had with it. However I am assured that the UK cars will have a false floor to heighten it. Now whether that is an option, I wasn't told. But having lived with the Megane, it can be a nuisance, agreed.

Good to have easy access to turn assistance off but try it before you do. Renault have done a very good job and they are less aggressive and annoying than other brands.

That is a very fair point. I returned from Spain to drive the Skoda Enyaq again, and that certainly has the space in the boot length that the Scenic lacks.

Its a up market ev kadjar replacement model , same dimensions, except the roof is a inch lower .The onlyone worth bothering to get is the bigger battery version with glass roof which is about 42 ,ooo poonds . I still have the old 2016 kadjar signature autobox with a glass roof , 23 ooo when new and giving about 60% round town driving 38/39 mpg and over 400 miles a tank full ,if taking in long runs , (real world driving) . The kadjar insurance is 13 e , for the new one it will be over double the cost and more. Sadly my wages havnt risen by the 80 % cost of the new scenic kadjar. Ps Scenic names about 2 decades old and it was for a people carrier, so a bit confusing as this is Suv type . The 20 inch wheels look cool 😎 but it effects the ride when going over road imperfections especially road bumps and potholes here in the south , so its every minute then .

From all the reviews I've read and watched, this looks like a massive hit for Renault - great in most respects but lacking in one or two. I would have liked them to really take on the competition with a longer warranty and like the Megane, they haven't thought about dog owners! Does nobody at Renault own a dog? I think I'd still go for the Model Y.

You want "dog mode" or just a flat trunk ? For the trunk I think they have an accessory to make it flat. For the dog mode maybe there will be an app since it is Google OS.

Preferably both but the flat floor and a lower entry are the biggies. The boot lip looks really high, hence the big drop to the floor - not good for dogs.

The Renault in the tested version costs 55,000 euros in the Netherlands. The Tesla model Y euro 45,000. I still miss the power consumption during the test and the type of battery.

Are you sure about these numbers? According to the official website, this long-range Reanult starts at €48k(and the top spec is from €51.7k) and the long-range Model Y starts at €51k. These are the numbers from the companies official website . What is your source for the figures ?

@@Dqtube I guess prices are not the same in all countries. In France I just checked and *with the same level of equipment* the Renault and the Tesla are at the same price, even if the Tesla is AWD. But yes, the starting price is lower for the Renault, but it excludes quite a few things including the mobile charger.

My opinions on looking at this and the Megane, if they dropped the boot sill 20cm it might be a very practical car. As it is, they're both useless to me.

Yes… that’s a problem with so many current EVs. MG4, Enyaq and even Niro’s boot sills are a good bit lower. ( Megane 840mm high, MG4 and Enyaq 730mm high, Niro 760, Astra 760, e308 770mm. Id4 780.

@@Mancozeb100 630 isn't arbitrary, it's the height of my dog's chin and the tallest thing she will jump in! Only EV's I know that would work are the various Van-MPVs and the rather expensive estates. Stellantis do both but the vans are too short ranged and the estates are horrendously expensive. Also, where did you get your numbers from, I've not seen most of those referenced online!

The figures - Was at an EV show in Dublin, a few weeks ago - like a proper nerd, I brought my measuring tape and measured as many car boots as I could! For me the majority of French car designs don’t age well. You see them at launch and think that looks great but after a few years you see one on the road looking raggedy and think good job I avoided that!

The base model E-Tech gives you 379 miles, it actually gives you the longest out of the 3 ranges. Yes it will be less, but this is what is quoted. So lets say 300 miles, will do me. I hope to get one depending on the seat. Please show the driver seat in full a bit longer, so I can judge, dodgy spine.

One of the best seats you can get in this style of car. Did 2,600 miles in my Megane with this seat and it’s beautifully supportive. I’d suggest either the Techno or Iconic. The Esprit Alpine has a bit more shoulder support, but the seats “pinch” a bit down the sides. Iconic trim is the one I’d go for personally.

I would say to improve aeronautic, and so better range, like with Tesla models S and X. But the Tesla models 3 and Y way is also quite good if you do not mind explaining how to open the doors each time somebody tries for the first time.

Renault likes induction motors, they are cheaper but takes more space especially if powerful, idem as for Zoé, Mégane E-Tech, the future R5 E-Tech, etc. Induction motors also have no rare-earth elements, a good point if you believe it is bad to use something that for now comes mostly from China. And off course as for all EVs there are no are-earth elements in the batteries.

o YES THAT 60KW going to sell in huge numbers (abouth the same as the Enyaq 60 and ID.4) near none!!!!!!!! You cant compare a nmc 60 ev to a 60 LFP ev! The lfp takes you 20% further daily. And yes the Tesla model Y charges its 60 in around 20min.... So this 60 is going fail big time.

Whilst I do appreciate that you may prefer a shorter video, let me explain why we choose to do this length of review. The automotive media space is a very crowded one, some with big names attached to them. How do we, as a very small, independent company get noticed? We go into greater detail. As an ex car salesman, I have spent years listening to customers in the showroom and understanding what they would like to know when buying a new car. So we try to cover those things in our reviews. Yes, it costs us views (which would earn us more money) and subscribers (again, we lose revenue by not growing as fast), but we feel it’s what stands us apart from every other automotive RU-vid channel. This isn’t me being horrible to your comment, far from it, we welcome everyone’s viewpoint. But I just wanted to explain the rationale why we do these long reviews. If anyone is interested in buying a new EV, ten minutes won’t give them enough detail to understand the car. We go a bit more in-depth, and give more opinion. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. It is appreciated.

Lets hope renault got it charging speed in order this time (2024 needs to be below 30min) And consumption need to be lower than the megane exspecialy on the highway In other words this ev is years younger than a Model Y so it needs to be better on all points if not then Renault FAILED

That is why it is good to have choice, because many people will prefer the "clean" model Y rather than the cluttered scenic. I guess it depends of what you expect from a car, being a "computer on wheels" is a frequent criticism against Tesla but it is definitely appealing to me. While I don't like the SUV shape of the Renault, the lack of a fruck, not being AWD at this price level, etc.

…and yet Audi still uses ‘E-tron’ in France, which looks much like ‘TRD’ does in English. But couldn’t such a new car have had a new name? ‘Scenic’ will always remind me of Man Down. Perhaps they don’t watch that in France.

@@fradius1 I don't think Tesla needs their employees to make bad comments on other EVs. Most likely an anti EV guy (because of the not so clever price comment) who does not understand that humanity is composed of many people with different needs and tastes. Or maybe a troll with no real life, always happy to induce hate. Better ignoring it.
