Good job. I overhauled my first motor a 1949 Ford flathead in 1963 when I was 13 years old. I did it all by myself got it to run pretty good but being a kid I put plain water in it no antifreeze and the next night it got way below freezing and cracked the block. I learned from my mistake.

Great video brother!! I would highly recommend an AFR gauge. You will be able to keep an eye on dangerous lien condition and diagnose most tuning issues. I put one on my 76 F150 and it has been very useful in tuning the carburetor.

Congratulations! The car sounds good. I've enjoyed the great videos and liked following your build. If you believe the carb is correct for your build, an updated intake and better flowing headers might be next for consideration on your project list. The break-in really depends on the honing finish that was done during the engine build and the type of rings you went with. Those factors will determin your break-in time. Change oil at 500 miles duriing break-in.

A 750 CFM carb on a 347 is about perfect you could go a little lower but and gives you the option to go with more horsepower and it's better to be rich then lean! I would definitely put an RPM air gap on it with a one-inch phenolic spacer! You're absolutely right about the transmission and the rear end too, I have the same engine transmission and rear end making about the same power and I beat the dog piss out of it no problems you just can't get you aggressive the first thing to go will definitely be the transmission before the rear end!

If you are using one of the Comp XE cams or other cams with very aggressive ramp rates you will likely always hear more valve train noise than you may be accustomed to. The "fast action" of these ramps creates noises (such as setting the valves back on their seats) that you wouldn't hear with other, slower ramp rate cams. The "slower" cams create the same sounds but at a higher rpm where the general "sound and fury" of the higher engine rpm masks those noises. Do check your valvetrain geometry though; pushrod length is critical when changing things in a motor. if your push rod length is correct you will see a narrow shiny spot on the valve stem tips right near their centers. If you see a wider and/or off-center wear pattern, your pushrod length is not correct which is causing alignment issues with your rocker arms, etc. This can result in lost power and accelerated engine wear, especially valve guides. Very important; check it. Lots of good RU-vid videos to help. Best way to adjust those valve train clearances is with the motor off. Make sure the cam is on its heel for the rocker you are adjusting. Slowly tighten the rocker's adjusting nut while spinning the pushrod back and forth with your fingertips. As soon as you feel a little drag on the pushrod, stop. Tighten another 1/2 to 3/4 turn for a street motor. Done. Again, RU-vid videos are out there to demonstrate the process. While you have your valve covers off do a thorough inspection for shiny spots which can indicate the rockers hitting/rubbing lightly on the valve covers. This happens frequently when upgrading to a performance cam and roller rockers. If it's minor interference, often a thicker valve cover gasket will remedy the issue. You have built a REALLY beautiful car there...you should be proud and enjoy!

Sounds great man! Yeah I love the hydraulic clutch on my 68 fairlane from modern driveline, I bought the bigger bore version because they had two and the bigger bore master cylinder gives a little firmer pedal which I like plus it moves more fluid to make sure I’m fully disengaging the clutch all the way. As for the ticking sound, if you have adjustable rocker arms which I assume you do with everything else you got in the motor then you may have to adjust them after a few runs. If you have hydraulic lifters then you just start the car and back off on the rocker arm stud u til the ticking gets real noticeable then tighten it back down until it stops then give a 1/4 turn tighter and they are set. If you have solid lifters then you have to set each cylinder to top dead center and use a feeler gauge to set them and do that for all 16 rockers. Anyway great work regardless and great video, glad to see that ole girl running again.

@@AndyKruseChannel you’re welcome, yeah it’s not hard just takes some time, it can be messy if you have hydraulic lifters and have to set them with the engine running but taking an old valve cover and cutting the top open keeps the oil from spilling over. Looking forward to the upcoming videos.

Great build! I wouldn't change the carburetor. It will only give what the engine needs. A good tune is essential. There may be hood clearance issues with the Performer RPM. I have a 351W in my '65 convertible, and I'm thinking the RPM or the Air-Gap are too tall.

Thanks! Yeah, I do like the flexibility that a larger carb provides at the higher RPMs, but I think you're right, a good tune will be the best way. I'm good on hood clearance, I've got the space because of the scoop cutout. :)

You should go thru and double check your rocker / lash adjustment, your motor did sound weird under load, I know you have a roller deal so check out the hundred 's of YT videos on how to adjust SBF hydraulic roller rockers . zero lash + 1/2 turn.

Is your coolant reservoir on the passenger side? I see a rubber line running out of the bottom of what looks like a small reservoir. The system might have burped out a little extra coolant when it warmed up? Mine did that a few weeks ago after filling up the system and driving it for the first time. Sounds great. Nice job.

Thanks! I figured out that it was just some left over coolant trapped on the plastic fan shroud from when it erupted a few weeks ago. This was the first drive since the install and there were little drops here and there of coolant that I never cleaned up. And since it doesn't evaporate, it was just sitting there waiting for the wind to blow it around. It's all good now! :)

Hi great engine but I wouldn’t run it until you pull the valve covers somethings not right I would look for loose rockers sticky valves or bent pushrods or maybe just a simple adjustment on the rocker arms do you have a solid cam or is it hydraulic

The thing that i learned is whit a new engine is to rev it to 3000 3500 max for first 1000 miles and alot of engine braking . Say from 2500 rpm tot 1500 rpm So country roads driving with alot of engine braking and accelerating (not full throttle)should be best to seat the rings because of the vacuum of engine braking , it will pull the rings against the cilinderwalls. That is what the engine builders in Belgium told me and also i read this on American forums They also told me that driving at steady rpms will not help to seat the rings so no highway

Good advice. Small clarification. There are opposing needs in a new/rebuilt engine. The rings need to seat quickly, before the cross hatch pattern in the cylinder walls smooths out. First 50 miles or so is really important, and by 100 miles are so, ring seal is usually pretty close to what it's going to be. On the other hand, there are many newly-established clearances in the engine that need to wear in or seat together...bearings, piston to cylinder walls, thrust clearances, etc. These thrive on gentle to moderate rpm. So the key is to apply some hard pulls very early on to seat the rings, but NOT at high rpm. You can do this on the highway in a higher gear (so the revs build more slowly). Bring the engine to full operating temperature. Starting at a pretty low rpm (maybe 2000, depends on cam), ease the throttle to the floor and let the motor pull hard but not above approximately 2/3 of its max rpm. Let off the throttle and let the motor drag the speed down again. This creates a high vacuum in the cylinders which draws oil up the cylinder walls, cooling the pistons and cylinder walls from the "ring seating pull" you just made. I like to drive along gently for a couple minutes between pulls to let everything fully return to normal temp. Repeat this about four times and your rings are 100% seated. Use conventional motor oil instead of synthetic while breaking in the rings; then, if you prefer it (I do) you can change to synthetic at your first break-in oil change. With rings seated you can spend the rest of the next 500 miles or so driving as gently as you prefer to finish breaking in all the other clearances in the engine. It's a balancing act; key is to break those rings in early and then go easy for whatever you believe is an appropriate distance. There are plenty of arguments about how long it does, or does not, take to break in the bearings and other clearances. However, once you properly break in those rings you can't hurt anything by driving it easy. On the other hand, if you drive it too easy and the rings fail to fully seat you will always have some blow-by and/or compromised oil control.

Sounds nice, just curious what altitude do you live at?? That can determine how rich or lean an engine will run. Compression ratio? Take the car out on the highway for a long cruise, then see how the plugs are burning. I run a Preformer RPM intake. I milled the center divider down 1/4" The AIR Gap sits 1" higher. Personally I would run the intake you have. Looks at the came specs as well. Is it a hydraulic, hydraulic roller, solid lifted? I run a 700 double pumper. Runs good. When you change the master cylinder make sure the pedal ratio is correct and bore size. There's an adjustable push rod that is sold by NPD and an adjustable proportional valve. Very important. Invest in an MSD Distributor, small cap, this allows you to adjust the timing and curve. Sounds like you are on the right track. However, if the cam is too big, you may want to put something more "street able" RPM range. A little smaller carburetor will give you more torque, it all depends on what type of driving you are doing. Driving it, 1000 miles, dial it in as best you can then from there. Just my thoughts, been down this road and parts do get $$$$.

Altitude about 1800 feet, compression is 10.5:1, and hydraulic rollers. Cam is a Trick Flow, stage 2, that focuses on mid and high RPM, which is where I wanted this motor to be. I will spend more time in the lower RPMs, but I want car to come alive when I'm not being responsible, not while I'm on my way to the grocery store. :) I'm ok with Air-Gap sitting 1 inch higher as I've got the clearance below the hood, but I could get a shorter air filter if needed.

@@AndyKruseChannel my father and I built a 65 fastback back in the mid 90's. We used a Ford Racing 302 with GT-40 heads, came with the Ford B303 hydraulic roller. Mated that to a World Class T-5, from Ford Racing. Used the performer RPM intake and a 600 double pumper. My father, who passed away 21 years this month, put a stock 90's Mustang clutch in it. He too had knee issues. I do remember we used the stock Duraspark ignition and a distributor from a non-smog 84-85 mustang GT. He did however have it curved to the combination. It had 3.50's for gears. Great combination, pulled hard to 6k From experience stick with a Ford Racing cam in a Ford engine. I run and F303 roller in my 351w. Change out your harmonic balancer to a Ford Racing, if you haven't done that. You will feel the difference and your engine will benefit. The Ford Balancer is drilled for 3 or 4 bolt crank pulleys. Use an ARP Harmonic balancer bolt as well. I will in southern California ☹️ where the altitude is maybe 400 feet. But the pump gas is terrible. Just my thoughts.

Curious what temperature your fans turn on and off? I was told if they turn on and off Too frequent, it’ll ruin the fans.

185 degrees the fans turn on, then they turn off when the temp gets down to 170. Define too frequent. Ambient temps will play a role (cold days vs hot days), driving your car a lot will play a role, and too small of a radiator will also play a role. All electronics have a service life, crappy/cheap products are likely to have a shorter life than well made electronics. :)

Contrary to popular belief, it is not a great idea to run a street motor cooler than its design temperature. There are numerous reasons for that but suffice to say the designers selected that temperature for a reason (and it's more than emissions). So if it is designed to have a 180 thermostat, once fully warmed up the motor should be running near than temperature most of the time. The only time you want your fans to come on is when temperature climbs above thermostat temp. In other words, the fans are for use only when the radiator can't maintain the design temperature. Ideally your fan thermostat would turn on at least 10-15 degrees higher than your thermostat temperature and then back off at, or slightly above "normal." No power wasted, fans not unnecessarily worn out, and engine runs at its design temperature.

The radiator is a 24" Champion, 2-row unit and a 1999 Ford Contour electric fan. I put a video out a few weeks ago about this install. :)

Both. 😁 The old block was the factory 289 that came in this car (I still have it), and the new block is a mid 80’s hydraulic roller 302 that I had converted to a 347.

I know you already have your carb. You have a hot 347, great heads... put a hi rise intake, blue thunder is a great intake... if you look at the area under the curve that BT is top notch. Looks like original cobra parts too. With a stick shift, you absolutely could benefit from a double pumper carb. A 700dp would be right bin the wheelhouse of that combo. Also, DP requires much less tuning. Hope this helps.

As far as carburetors go, a 750 is maybe more than needed on a 347, but it won't hurt anything. You could get buy with a 600, but you've got the 750. I'm with you; better too big than too small, right? If it runs like you like it, it's the right carb. Engine sounds perfect. Let's go have some fun! EDIT: Definitely consider the Performer RPM or RPM Air Gap intake. I too have the Performer and it works but is restrictive.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards that Air-Gap, but it will only be beneficial above 3500 RPM, so I need to determine if I want that extra 20HP the handful of times I take the motor to the top. :)

I say scratch the carb altogether and go Sniper EFI. Forget all that air/fuel manual mess. Get the Edelbrock performer RPM 302 intake. It’s recommended by both Holley and AFR, two companies I take their word as gospel.

I'm not ready for the EFI, partially because it's expensive, but I sort of enjoy doing the Carb thing. It's a dying art that I have yet to master. :)

@@AndyKruseChannel If you do eventually go EFI skip the Sniper and go with the Terminator X. RPM air gap and the 1 3/4 Tri-y's from Doug's and you'll be good to go.
