For the last eight months we've been making the 1.5 hour drive every weekend to our homestead in Central Portugal. This week we finally stayed over for the first time and had three whole days to work on the land!

Hi, we're Jazz and Nuno, an Australian-Portuguese couple converting a scrapyard into a homestead in Central Portugal. We bought the 0.7 hectare property in August 2023 and we're documenting everything from the very beginning.
We're learning every step of the way and we're happy to share it with you and invite you along for the ride!

Keep grass short around your place it will help with insects around. Your light is starting to shine. Good luck.

Hi! Thank you so much for your suggestion and message! We are trying to keep them all down around the building as much as possible, with just the strimmer for now it's somewhat of a losing battle 😅 We'll keep at it though, during the summer we plan on cleaning up as much as we can when it all is a bit more dry.

That's a great question 😁 This was the cheap and quick solution, or so we thought 😆 It is working as intended, giving us a dry spot where we can fix up the caravan slowly, as it's clearly in need of a lot of work. Probably we would have done things differently given the opportunity, but we wouldn't have learned had we not gone through it as well 😊 But thank you so much for your message and support, see you on the next one!

Here in Africa we have the same mosquito problem. What I do is put Citronella essential oil in all my household cleaning products, it repels them, I also put it in all our body care products. Plant lots of lavender and lemongrass around the camper, it also repels them. I just don't know if you get these plants where you live...❤❤ PS. just keep the citronella oil away from your dog, it's toxic to them if ingested.

Hi there Yolande! Thank you so much for the message and the tip! 🙏 We'll def have to do something, we still need to see in the summer how bad it gets, the land being swamped when we stayed over really made things worse. We want to see if we can get by just planting some repellents as you mentioned, or if we need to take stronger measures like netting on windows and so on. Thank you again for the message and support! Hope to see you on the next one! 🥰

Nice awning! I like to know, where did you get the tarp?

Thanks Monique! We found the tarp on OLX - just type in 'lona' and you'll find several sellers who resell billboard vinyl as their business :)

Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, good work 👍😁 it's better to keep the strimmer as close to the ground as you can and make half round circle movements 😉 do you guys have a veggie garden 🍓🍉🍑🍊🍍🍌🍅🌽🍠if you make a mixture of apple vinegar and salt you spray it on your bramble berry in your house to kill them off.

Thank you so much for the kind words and for the tip! We'd always rathe use natural methods where we can, so this is really great knowledge! As for the veggie garden, not yet. Since we're not living there yet it's a bit tricky but it's definitely one of the things we're looking forward to most!

Questions.. how much money have you set aside for your stone house renovation and how much will you attempt to do yourselves? Oh., and when will you start?
@TheScrappyHomestead
@TheScrappyHomestead 3 месяца назад
Hi there Mike! Excellent question, I'll give as informative an answer as possible. So as far as our budget we have around 10K atm set aside for the renovations, our intention with this money is to put a new roof on the workshop and also make a room inside where we could stay over. In principle, we want to attempt to do as much as we can, though with more technical stuff we'll either get someone to do it or watch over what we're doing to make sure we're on the right track. In terms of when we plan to start, we hope to get the roof of the workshop ready by the end of this year, and we want to start this summer. Hope that answers it, thank you for all your support!
