Thanks. Six year old video still giving useful tips. Am on my first action cam and I had no idea why I was sent an 'extra' backdoor. Did not realize it is to improve audio recording when not shooting under water.
Thanks for watching. 6 years old but the advice still stands. The newer models don't even have Waterproof housings to muffle the sound. Eventually, if you upgrade, you will be pleased with the better audio you can achieve.
Thank you very much because out of all the video you have the best and important information especially formatting the SD card one little detail no else have mention before.great thanks
tom ford That's great Tom. I could update it for HERO4 but then another model will come along (such as the recent HERO+ LCD and HERO4 Session) and it will be the same thing. The principles are the same for all models. Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated.
Gary Winstead You're welcome Gary. I've got a backlog of GoPro accessories to review. After that I hope to continue this series. Stay tuned. Cheers Bryn
I bought a used GoPro Hero 3+ silver. It came with an adapter. What do I use it for? Didn't have the manual. It seems to fit onto the back of the camera. I'm and older generation lady and and not very techy lol
I had a closer look at it, it was very late last night when I was checking it out, and I think it might be what u just described. Which is awsome as I bought it to use on trail deides and drives(I have horses), and during the marathon phase of combined driving (carriage driving). Thank you for replying. I've subscribed to your channel to keep learning, all the way over the pond in Ontario Canada 😊
James Seals Thanks James. That is my intention..to make nice easy understandable tutorials. Some 13 year olds criticize this style but I am not really making my videos for them. They may think I am too slow for them but it is a deliberate move to help the older and less experienced crowd. My main target group is 35-60. Thanks for the feedback and I will continue to create more similar content. Cheers Bryn
+ConceptualViral No worries. The Hero2 was a really good camera at the time. As each model is released, you tend to forget that the old cameras are still good. I have them all sitting on the shelf and they all work perfectly. Cheers bryn
That's awesome. You are most welcome. I'd love to get the DJI Phantom 2 but I have so much on my plate right now, I probably wouldn't have time to fly it. I still haven't opened my HERO4 Silver from 3 months ago. Lol
Great video for us older and more challenged users. Appreciate your professional delivery and presentation. I do like your background music compared to some other types I have viewed.
+Brynmag Productions hey ,if anyone else wants to discover how to use GoPro like a PRO? Try Moorack Simple Gopro Miracle (do a google search gopro user tips ) ? Ive got excellent success with it.
+Highway Rider You can't charge the camera, you can only charge a battery. If you don't have a battery inside the camera it wont be charged. You can however POWER the camera by plugging in a powered USB cable. But it won't charge anything and you can't damage the camera. Make sense? Bryn
You're welcome Joseph. I have been busy but plan to continue this series when I have a chance. I will cover mounts, resolutions and frame rates, batteries, shooting strategies, etc.
Thanks Michael. I'm still working on the new look but it promises to make it easier to produce videos quicker, despite what the weather is doing outside. early days yet, so we'll see.....
Thanks for the video. I am going to buy a new Gopro Hero 4 soon. Its my first time to have Gopro so I am trying to learn more about it before I physically have it with me.
Mohammed Ebeid Thanks Mohammed. Before long, they will everywhere in Egypt, you watch. You'll find lots of helpful videos on my channel. thanks for subscribing.
Very helpful vid, I always keep the dust cover on the camera, when in use, and keep sharp track of it when it is off, when charging or down loading, I usually put it in the case and close it, it can disappear as it is tiny and black. Thanks for the upload.
Michael Hollier Good point. I spend a lot of time cleaning my lenses. I don't worry so much about scratching the lens on the camera itself but I have scratched several lens covers on the housings. None of these seem to be visible in the footage though.
Ok...I was referring to the dust cover..ing the sd card & usb receptical..?? you?? Also I have just ordered the Sena bluetooth back pack allowing me to make audio over the vid from a remote location, like my motorcycle helmit, to say a tri pod or to the motor bike, or where ever the camera is, 100 feet or so. Thanks again.
Michael Hollier Ohh, sorry, I misunderstood. Nah, I take the side cover off and chuck it in my gear kit. I have a plastic bag full of them. I have the SENA 20S dual headsets sitting here waiting to be reviewed. I will be doing some tests with it hopefully on motorbikes and using the Bluetooth Audio Pack. Don't hold your breath though. Lol I have so much going on right now. Let me know how it goes for you.
Yeah funny eh... never bothered cuz I never bothered, which doesn't make any sense of course.I've had it so long the original battery is dead, so I ordered new batteries, plus an accessory kit. Bunch different type mounts n stuff.Really looking forward to figuring out how to use it on my kayak and on hikes.
Shot a mini test vid, just sitting at the desk. A-ok...So then the wife and I loaded up the backpacks, grabbed a couple fishing rods, I put the GoPro on using a headband mount. We hiked in to the confluence of the McLeod R and Groat Cr, 20 miles south of Whitecourt Alberta. It went very well. The shots were clear, all were focused where I was looking, which was nice. Got decent action shots, shore casting for Walleye. FYI: left the camera turned on continuously, so that I could just quickly hit the play button to video something. In 3 hours pretty much exact, the battery was killed.
Hi! Great vid! I'm very close to buying a gopro hero 3 or 3+ what's your opinion? I'm new to gopros actually. Should I get the silver or should I get the black? I've heard many great reviews for both. Is it worth the extra $100 that I could spend in accessories for the black edition? I'd be using it a ton. Snowboarding, ocean, ect.
Thanks a lot, for your instructions,, I've just buy a Go Pro Hero 3 Sylver edition,,lucky mine, I got 32G MicroSD card Cat 10, I've followed your instructions, now waiting for complete charge, then I'll try for the first time this mysterious and great machine,, cheers, ;)
just great, is a wonderful piece of machine,,even batterie is good, at least netter than all those cheap cam's you can find,,even batterie as a nice performance,, well for my needs, ;)
well, I've try the two options on video mode,,720/50FPS and 1080/25FPS,, very nice definition, got to learn better how to perform image capture/lights/angle/view, etc,, to be able make some pretty cool stuff like slow motion, well I'm trying to get bat plaining those lovely creatures of the night,,
Yeah, it's a new set up and I'm still trying to get the lighting right. I've still got a lot to learn but I'm getting there. The weather? Maybe one day. I'll need even more gear for that. Lol
Thanks. I made this before the HERO was out. The maximum recommended size memory card for the HERO is 32Gb. I will have to add an annotation or even update the video to include HERO4 cameras.
Bryn, you offer such great information! Thank you. Now I only need a NEW GoPro HERO. When the day comes, I will turn to you for help! Thanks for the upload!
Thanks. That was actually useful. I'm charging the little wonder now. I'm going to go on to the mounts video now, because I have these strange black and white alien checker pieces with adhesive on the back, and I don't know what they are for.
+Sailor Barsoom Hello Sailor. If you are referring to my suggested next video at the end, I haven't made that 2nd video yet. However I do plan to do that within the next couple of months. I have been working 6 days a week and have very little time right now. I'm not sure what the black & White adhesive things are.
Brynmag Productions They are anchor points for tethering it to your gear. I understand that you can only spare so much time for making these videos. Most people have to, what's the phrase I'm looking for? Work for a living, that's it. I'm just glad for *this* video, because it was a real help. I found one about the mounts, and should watch somebody's video about how to get worthwhile footage tonight or tomorrow. Good luck at work and on future videos.
I bought a Gopro hero (don't see any numbers after Hero) and wondered what brand micro SD card you would recommend. I see class 10 or UHS 1 but not sure what brand would be best.
Toby Zollner For the GoPro HERO (entry level camera) you will need a Class 10/UHS 1 card up to 32Gb maximum. I totally recommend Lexar cards. In my experience they are very reliable. GoPro recommends Lexar, as well as Sandisk Extreme cards. Check out this GoPro article regarding their recommendations: gopro.com/support/articles/software-update-release
Hi sneakeypokegums (I'm not even gona ask..) You're welcome and I'm glad to have you onboard with my channel. Every new subscriber and Thumbs up helps me grow my channel faster. Bryn
Hi Bryn! Thanks for yet another great video! I have had a GoPro for nearly a year but i had no idea as to what PAL/NTSC was, so thanks for that! However, after a bit of research, the country I live in (France) is SECAM. What do you recommend I put it on? Cheers!
Hi Alex. The frame rates for SECAM are the same as PAL, so I would use PAL. Why GoPro have not included a setting for SECAM....I don't really know. There are some differences to do with Colour but how easily you can match SECAM footage with PAL footage in your editing program, I don't know either. Maybe someone else reading this could comment if they know the answer. I have several other cameras that are PAL only, so I always use the PAL setting on my GoPro cameras, so that I can match frame rates. Also in France your Fluorescent lights are 100HZ, so if you film using NTSC, you will get light flicker. Bryn
Excellent instruction, no hesitation or nervousness. Either you rehearsed this many times before you actually made this video or you're really good with Gopro camera operation. Either way, good job and thanks. I just got the hero 4 and this helps immensely.
Thank you. I've been doing this for a while now, so it is a lot easier than it used to be. I play with GoPro cameras everyday. I have 9 of them. Lol. I will be doing lots more HERO4 videos coming soon.
+Harold Harold Hi Harold. yep, that's high on my list of priorities to get done. I have just been working so much and not as much time for making RU-vid videos as I would like. Bu once I am able, I will be making a whole series on all these different aspects. Stay tuned.

is there a way to get the videos to not be 17mins long. I use my GoPro as a dash cam, but when I go back to see the vid, its a bunch of 17min clips. Help, if you can and thanx in advance.
+Eric Lemus No, that's normal because of the fat32 file separation protocol (that limits files to less than 4Gb). Lots of other cameras will stop recording at that point (particularly Canon DSLR's) while the Gopro keeps going and saves as roughly 17 m files in 1080 or longer in 720. You can easily join them together seamlessly in an editing program. Cheers Bryn
Your video is very useful Brynmag! Thanks a lot. I just have one question. I've turned off the camera, but there is still blue light shines. What that means? How can i turn it off? My camera is hero4 silver.
Thank you. That means your wi-fi is still turned on. If you don't turn it off the light will continue to flash until the camera battery goes flat in about 12 hours. Simply Press and HOLD the side button on the camera to turn off the Wi-Fi. Regards Bryn
You forgot to tell your viewers to turn that horrible beeping down to 70% volume, lol All joking aside, this video is great to help new users set up the camera for the first time. I have found it's a lot easier to use the GoPro App to change settings, once you've set that connectivity, as long as you've got a device which supports the app. It's a lot easier than using the buttons on the camera itself. Cheers and thanks for making this great instructional video!
Krankie V Actually I tell people to turn it off altogether. Can't stand that beeping. Totally agree. I use the App all the time. So much easier. The only thing that is better is using the new HERO4 Silver with the built in touch screen. Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated.
Ah, I bet a touch screen is really nice. I couldn't justify spending nearly twice as much for the hero 4 as I did on the 3+. I'm happy with my purchase as it's obviously a high quality product. Being so small and durable, the UI must suffer a little bit, I suppose, but that's okay with me. Keep doing what you do man!
Got anything like this for the Hero 4 silver? I'm getting one, but I've never used a GoPro before-I know that some of the steps will be the same, but not all of them.
I just purchased the Gopro Hero 4 black Music. Still waiting for it to ship. My question after watching this video is, I am not a professional nor am I a person that needs the best of everything. I am however an avid concert and festival goer and will be using this primarily to film performances. I saw on the go pro site there was a surf model and a music model and I believe one other. Did I make the correct purchase.
Rich I. You bought the best GoPro camera there is. The Black Edition cameras are considered to be Professional level cameras. The HERO4 Silver is the "Pro-sumer" model and would have been sufficient for your needs and the built in touch screen might have helped you line up your shots. Some people have reported being less than happy with the performance of GoPro cameras in low light but you will have to wait and see. The music version is aimed mainly at musicians. It has several mounts for things like mic stands and sticking the camera on a guitar neck, etc.
Nishant Sood You are right that GoPro have an article recommending 5V & 1 Amp: gopro.com/support/articles/recommended-chargers However the guys at Wasabi tell me it's ok to charge your GoPro batteries using a 2.1 Amp charger, since the camera only draws the amps that it needs. There is a huge amount of blogs and forums discussing this issue and the overwhelming response from electrical engineers is that you wont damage your camera by using a higher amp rated charger, however the voltage is crucial. You can make up your own mind but I have been using 1/2.1 Amp chargers for over 6 years without any issues.
Brynmag Productions Yes it's just to make sure the users know the ratings bcz these things can easily f up with atleast higher voltages ,still its just better to be under the ratings to just be on the safer side.
How do I increase more time for my video usage? For example my remaining recording time was set to 2h 30min. Now it is around 1h. Do I have to buy a new memory card in order to increase the time back up?
When i film with my gopro and wanna see the video on my computer or ipad the video starts and after about two seconds all i can see is a green screen and sometimes the video doesnt even save. I was filming a weeding with my gopro and when i came home nothing was on the sd card. And about two weeks ago i had a card error and had to format it on my gopro. What could it be? When i put a other card it works fine
You're welcome. generally when you buy a Gopro camera it will have the latest firmware that was available when it was boxed. So depending on how long it has been sitting on the shelf, the firmware is probably out of date. GoPro usually releases version 1 firmware with the camera. version 2 includes bug fixes and often new features. Version 3 also includes bug fixes and sometimes new features but will usually be the last firmware update. So yes, it's good and you should update the camera.
Bryn, I'm planning to do cross-country (US) driving, and want to take lots of pictures and, hopefully, capture lots of action shots in nature. I'm thinking of getting the GoPro at a friend's recommendation, but I'm wondering if GoPro has less expensive competition, without my sacrificing any major features. In your opinion, is the GoPro the best product in its price range?
+Daniel Toma I think you're asking the wrong person...I'm a GoPro addict!! But to try to be unbiased, a GoPro may not be the best camera if you are mainly taking photos. However if you want to shoot video and make timelapses, a GoPro would be best...maybe. I have heaps of cameras. A point and shoot for quick snaps and family photos | A DSLR for quality photographs, especially if I want to shoot in Manual mode. A handycam for video that I want without Fisheye, vlogs, etc. And about 13 GoPro cameras because, as I said, I'm an addict!! I really can't comment on other brands (i.e Non-GoPro action cameras) as I don't have any. Let me say this, if you could only afford ONE camera, then a GoPro HERO camera would probably be my first choice for all round versatility. But don't forget to allow for Accessories - "You don't just buy a GoPro". Bryn
What GoPro should i get? And why? Not doing anything major on it, just simple recording holidays and events etc... I would preferably have the GoPro with the longest battery life. Money issues are not a problem as i have been working this summer.
Alex Odefalk I would totally recommend the HERO4 Silver. Longer battery life than the Black edition. Has the built in touch screen and enough specs to suit most users. The HERO3+ has longer battery life but you would miss out on some of the new features in the HERO4 that make it the model to buy now. I am using Timelapse video most of the time now as the quality is so good and easier to use. Too many reasons to list, but that's my view. Cheers Bryn
Alex Odefalk HERO4 Session is a cool little camera. Enough specs to suit most Prosumers. The fact that you don't need a separate waterproof housing means better audio from the Mic and the sealed lens area means NO FOGGING. The frames means less hardware to achieve camera rotation, which is awesome for helmet mounting. Quick start recording is a good feature that saves battery life if start/stopping frequently. Downside: Built in battery means once the battery goes flat(1.5 to 2 hrs recording time ), you have to plug into wall charger or USB to charge. HERO+LCD has the touch screen which is good to set up your shot and change camera settings. Again NO Fogging because cam is sealed in. Good camera for most New Users or as a secondary camera. Downside: again built in battery.
biggie obie If it's the GoPro HERO basic Entry level camera, then you can use the Sandisk Ultra but only up to a maximum capacity of 32 GB.If you are referring to other models (3, 3+ or 4) then you can use Sandisk Ultra in Silver or White Editions. You can also use it in Black Edition cameras but not for the higher resolutions, protune ON or with Timelapse 0.5 second intervals.
Ok,so now I have the camera synced with my android phone but it is telling me that preview is not supported. I can not see what is being filmed or watch what was filmed. Help
Hi Louis I totally plan to revamp this series at some point. RU-vid has taken a slight backburner while I build my online accessories business www.herogear.com.au But soon I will start making new videos with all sorts of "New User" tips and tutorials. It's just a man's gotta eat. Bryn
