I feel like a good training with this acuspike is spiking (with the jump) and every good spike, you raise it a tiny bit higher. Once its high to the point u can rarely hit a spike well, u train with that height. So slowly u can get a higher jump and get used to jumping higher. Once u master that high jump, u can raise it even higher and continue like that

Hey Coach Donny! I am a little embarrassed to be saying this in front of everyone, but I couldn't find a way to message you privately. I am currently morbidly obese right now. After a scare in my life that occurred approximately 3 weeks ago, I have been eating healthy meals and my portions have been reduced by like 90% of what I normally ate. I am going to be prepping to go to the gym soon. I have been watching some of the national volleyball games on RU-vid, which has really inspired me to want to play in a game myself (not national league, just any game). I can't do it now unfortunately, after one jump I would be completely out of breath. I just want to know if your nutrition plans and online training can be catered to someone of my physique? Also, is there any workouts that you recommend to do that can help me firstly lose weight, but also have higher jumps? Do you think someone of my physique should even be attempting to jump, or could this injure my knees/ankles? I apologize to throw so much information at you all at once.

I would recommend it going on a diet. Losing some of that weight could help with physical activities, challenging or not. A diet is a great way to lose weight easily, but don’t go on a really extreme diet. Maybe add in some light exercises while on your diet, but not too hard where you’re eventually not making progress. What I mean is that instead of doing one set of maybe 10 push ups, it would be more viable if you could do 2 or 3 sets of 5 push ups, you know.

jo coach, i just finish watching your your vid on spiking a slide. Now i have a question, im a little weird cause i am right handed but i can jump the highest on one foot of my right foot... so can i still pull a proper slide spike jumping of my right leg and hitting with my right hand? and what would be a good approch be ? 3 steps starting with right or 4 steps staring with left? for normal spike i forced myself to do left right left because it makes sence with the hip position although its not really natural for me..

@aidangayadeen4186
@aidangayadeen4186 3 года назад
Not the coach but I'm a player. outside hitter from the UK I play for a uni team. I'm only 5ft6 so i do hella jump training. Quite simply work more on single leg work. In my jump training week I have an entire day dedicated to single leg work. With bodyweight alone you can do it. Work on pistol squats. Do single legged wall sits and bodyweight leg extensions. Also a very neglected but important factor is your ankle flexibility. This helps strengthen the tendons at the front of your lower leg. The front part of your calf essentially. Do single legged box jumps. Even more simple than the jump itself step off the box onto one leg and stick the landing properly. Things like that

I just want to ask. Is there a difference when hitters jump with sort of a forward force than just jumping vertically like what you guys are doing?
@Bi11leon
@Bi11leon 3 года назад
Probably more power with a broad jump. Short people with a decent jump prefer jumping straight up because they can reach a higher contact point.
@Bumi-90
@Bumi-90 3 года назад
Usually you should jump vertical. Every bit of forward motion is lost potential force, but vertical movement can be a tactical decision, or if you can easily jump higher, you might not care if you lose potential height. But on most run ups it is important to jump hit and land as close to the net, so by moving in the air you are in danger of touching the net
@IsuChairyc
@IsuChairyc 3 года назад
This is gonna be a little outta left field, but do you have any advice for someone who is 5 foot 3 who's only redeeming trait is his leg strength? I don't feel id be accurate enough to play libero but ive also never checked my jump height. Last i remember a few years ago i could nick the bottom of the basketball net from my middle school. Im 18 now though.
@Bumi-90
@Bumi-90 3 года назад
Accuracy is just a thing of training. But try to play the position you are most interested in. {Edit: sorry the hight is in feet and decimal feet, I'm not used to imperial and just converted to feet} I'm ~6 foot tall and had ~5.2 foot tall players blocking me or hitting over my block My teams main setter was ~5.5 foot tall. Jumping is a important trait, but running fast reaction times and quick movement are important in defense, and often small players are better at saving difficult attacks than tall players. Try to listen to advise on your way, but try your hardest to achieve the goal you set yourself.
@IsuChairyc
@IsuChairyc 3 года назад
@@Bumi-90 yeah i know its a thing about training but in all my time ive always been slow to improve on accuracy over more physical differences. For example running laps i could improvr my time in a few days versus accuracy would take months and still be minimal

i have a question - how to correctly tell if the ball is going in or out? i always mess it up in my games
@dwx
@dwx 3 года назад
Follow the ball to the line if you can. For back row receive, I usually stand 3m from the back line. Anything that's going above my head is most likely out. I'm 5'5". Edit: I realized you're probably asking more for receiving attacks... In that case, I'd say the first step is getting your defensive formation down so that you are where you're supposed to be. For example, if you're in "1" and you're defending a ball coming from the opponents power, I'd try to keep my right foot close to the line.
@Bumi-90
@Bumi-90 3 года назад
As stupid as it sounds. It is a good way to learn, by just standing in your position or near it and watching how it looks. Most attacks are too fast to analyze, so you need to build up an instinct, and the fastest way is just to gather as much information as possible. I usually say to the team just to predict every hit in training from every position, so they can warn each other in game if someone can't see or analyze the hit right.

I want to ask something. I've just got into volleyball and there's one thing that I'm particularly struggling with. Since I'm a basketball player, I have a pretty high reach and max jump vert as I can dunk fully, however, when I practice spiking, I can never get the right distance from my arm to the net or get the full palm on the ball. I have a 6'9 wingspan but always either hit the ball with the side of my hand on serves or touch the net on a spike. What can I do to practice the distancing and hand placement? I am able to do jump serves and once every ten serves, I get a decent on in, the others I either hit with the side of my hand, out or go to high to be competent jump serve.
@felix5740g
@felix5740g 3 года назад
You might just want to practice hitting against the wall. Indirectly - You spike the ball down at the floor, it bounces to the wall and back to you. Common practice for hitting. Focus on technique and point of contact. It's a rather boring excercise but if you do it right and with focus you get more used to hitting the ball and you learn to make micro adjusments. Good thing about this excercise is that you can do it alone and that you get a very high number of reps compared to other drills which is ultamately what you're looking for.
@filipecascais-davies1161
@filipecascais-davies1161 3 года назад
@@felix5740g thanks. I've seen some of the older players do this so I'll start practicing that. Unfortunately we're in lock down but im learning rotations in game as well as run ups. It's just that I have ridiculously long arms that I can't judge the distance between the net and where I'm at. Tbh I'm build like Lev from haikyuu 6'4/5 with long arms and skinny
@felix5740g
@felix5740g 3 года назад
@@filipecascais-davies1161 For me personally, timing and positioning when spiking was/is pretty much the hardest thing to learn. Some people are just born with it, some people just have to grind it out :D But once it clicks for you, you should be able to develop really good spike strenght given your phisique so just keep pracitcing :) Lockdown is really unfortunate right now (same here in germany) but if you're able to - have someone watch and analyse you. What can also be really helpful is recording yourself so you can actually see your mistakes.
@Bumi-90
@Bumi-90 3 года назад
@@felix5740g For hitting this is a great exercise. For the serves I can also advise you to catch the ball instead of hitting it, in the same motion as you would hit it, and then looking at your hand placement. You can learn a lot by doing this evey other time

I assume you learn nothing about timing and reading the trajectory of the set. While this gives you a great possibility to work on your approach and hitting technique it won't necessarily make you spike better in a real game. But then again, first comes technique (approach, arm swing, etc.) then comes the rest.

It is very useful if the setter is accurate. A big strength is that you can easily train accuracy by laying targets on the ground, so you can do many repetitions with no variables outside of your control, so you can concentrate on the set, when approaching in a game.
