This is southern rock at it's finest. The flute solo at the beginning & end is great. Love their music from the 70's. Some of their other big hits were "Fire on the Mountain" & "Heard It in a Love Song". Southern rock fiddler Charlie Daniels did quite a few collaborations with them.

Can't You See is one of those songs that's so damned solidly good that sometimes it gets overshadowed by other flashier songs. Just a great American, soulful song. I have seen Marshall Tucker live throughout their earlier years, and it was always guaranteed fun music you could rock to in a down-to-earth atmosphere.

Toy Caldwell was a Marine sergeant and served in Vietnam and received a PurpleHeart. . Tommy Caldwell also served in Vietnam and was a private first class. The Caldwell brothers were the founders of the Marshall Tucker Band. Toy Caldwell died in 1993 from respiratory failure, and Tommy Caldwell died in a car accident on April 28, 1980. Tim Caldwell also passed away on March 28, 1980, from a car accident.

I love MTB. Doug sang lead most often, but this is Toy Caldwell (the fastest thumb in the south) singing lead and playing lead guitar. Toy's brother Tommy played bass. That flute is compliments of Doug Eubanks. Rhythm guitar is George McCorkle. Drums is Paul Riddle. If you know his voice, you can hear Doug Gray in the background. I love the "Carolina Dreams" album from the first note to the last.

Marshall Tucker was one of the bands signed to Capricorn Records, which was an independent label in my hometown of Macon, Georgia. Other notable bands and artists signed to Capricorn included The Allman Brothers, Elvin Bishop, Wet Willie, Percy Sledge, and more. Capricorn Records is often credited for creating the southern rock genre.

This song takes me back to the 70s for sure. I saw The Marshall Tucker Band when they opened for The Allman Brothers back in the mid 70s, They performed at The Cow Palace in Oakland, Ca. Once the Allman Brothers had finished their set.... several members of Marshall Tucker came back on stage as well as Boz Scaggs. Wow... That was a LOT OF TALENT on one stage. Great concert. Take care...

1976 saw the Marshall Tucker Band in Boston, with Elvin Bishop as the opening act. After the first encore, the MTB asked for patience with a reset, and equipment for both bands was brought back out, and the two bands played together for more than 20 minutes - beginning with "Will the Circle Be Unbroken". Superb show.

To me, that flute sounds breathy and warm, almost like a wooden recorder. I can't see this as a love song, it's a song of despair over his woman walking out on him without saying goodbye. He's deeply broken over what she did, initially saying he was going to jump off the highest mountain, or find a hole in the wall to crawl inside and die. This is the beginning of recovery from a relationship that went deeply wrong, but it's when the emotional wounds are still bleeding.

Born and raised just an hr or so from Spartanburg S.C., I grew up listening to this band. I'm in my 50's now, but they were huge back in the 70's to early 80's. And your right, as a teen living in a rural area I spent many a summer evening in my 77' Grand Prix, windows down, woods and farmland going by and the MTB cassette in the tape player cranked to 10!

LOVE this song.. I have since it came out. I am an old lady, 64, and this is the soundtrack of my youth. The 70s was definitely one of the best decades for music (followed by grunge/alternative).. the 80s.. meh... the 90s.. meh until the end of the decade. About 10 years ago I saw these dudes in their bus leaving an eating establishment in Spring, Tx. They had just finished a gig and were hitting the road again. Had to honk and wave!

Nice musical and lyrical breakdown by the guys here. It would have been awesome to here a comparison with the recent ELP/prog rock song. There is something about the country and R&B base to most Southern rock from that era that typically makes it a more worthwhile listen for me than most, not all, 1970s prog rock. I was glad that both Nick and Ryan brought up the guitar and piano work with the vocals. Great stuff! Another quality and entertaining video on the board for the guys. 😁 #BobRossAlbumCover 😂 #SouthernAllOverThePlace (Note: That's a great t-shirt slogan with your logo for the merch store. The guys turn the page from Paramore to The Marshall Tucker Band, another group that blurred the lines of conventional musical genres. "Can't You See" apparently has been sampled once by a group named Fun Lovin Criminals in 1998 for their song "Big Night Out." The song has only been covered 10 times but some legends and well known groups/artists have recorded the song. Hank Williams Jr. appears to be the first to release a cover with fellow country legend Waylon Jennings recording a version not long after in the mid 1970s (the first link above). More recently, The Charlie Daniels Band put out a cover about 25 years ago. The Zac Brown Band with Kid Rock released a version nearly 15 years ago. Soft rock/"Yacht Rock" act Firefall did their own version just a year ago. That song is the second link above. Just as the other varied artists, songs, and genres have been intriguing, it will be interesting to see what the guys think of this 1970s hit. The one thing we do know is that the next song could come from any artist, any genre, and just about any era! 😁
