The reason they have different pings is because Rivals 2 is using server-based rollback like 2XKO (Project L) will. Most Fighting Games use peer to peer, but this could theoretically be better if say, you're in the EU and want to play someone in West Coast USA which normally is like 150-160 ping if you're lucky. Servers could improve that by having both of you connect to an East Coast USA server where you both have around 100 ping, so hopefully it works out that way and longer distance connections are more playable - Tirq

That's not how it works. The inputs still need to travel to the other player. These two are essentially playing in a 130ms ping connection. The main, and really only, advantage of server based netcode is that the game doesn't need to stop for a player that experiences a ping spike and can instead just drop their inputs causing rubberbanding on their end instead of a spike in rollback or delay for the 3 other players. Otherwise, you're just adding a detour between the players that may take them through a route that increases the travel time of inputs between players.

The server dictates what happens in the game, so the ping (round trip) displayed being lower than a normal p2p connection is actually meaningful. It doesn't take 130ms for your data to reach the opponent, it takes 130ms for the data to reach the opponent, then come back to your client. Yes, it will still take 65ms (half of the 130ms round trip ping) for your opponent's inputs to go through the server and then into your client so you visually see their movement, but the game state is still updated as soon as it reached the server, not updated as soon as it reached you. There are examples on why that would benefit the lower ping, but this is all very hypothetical, especially when frame delay is added into the mix and I'm unsure of exactly how Rivals 2 will do everything. - Tirq @@grandsquanchrum

@@BIG_LEFF The server being the authority just allows uneven distribution of correction. It doesn't erase the delay and rollback that you would normally see if they were playing peer to peer. If the server does allow uneven correction then there's a very obvious problem with fairness by giving players that are closer to the server an advantage. The advantage there is that the player's near a server would never see a problem and the players that aren't close enough to a server to never see problems will consistently see the same problem. These advantages aren't hypothetical, server based netcode already exists we already know its problems.

I was the Loxodont! Was a ton of fun playing and the connection from East Coast US to the Western Europe server is more playable than I thought it'd be.

Having seen that dev tournament stream/some of the other matches when Leff streamed it the other day, the online could definitely still use some work. There were lots of consistent small rollbacks that looked janky (albeit not massively disruptive to play), and Leff did mention some laggy connections. Leff is playing EU to USA of course, but the rollbacks also occurred in dev vs dev matches, even when the in game HUD showed low pings and good quality connections (the entire dev team works remotely so it's hard to know for sure the distance). So it seems like a mixed bag overall right now. Of course one of the main goals of the recent kickstarter was to hire on network engineers so it's reasonable to expect these issues to be ironed out, considering that they've only been hired on recently. Game looks fantastic, can't wait to try it myself.

true that there were a lot of rollbacks in the dev tourney. the commentators mentioned that this was because the games were being streamed via Kells’s computer. because Kells lives in northern Canada, his connection to the server was significantly worse than the players. so though the spectating experience of Kells (and the stream) presented a lot of rollbacks, the players themselves were not, which, according to the commentary, was why they were still hitting their tech chases and gameplay didn’t appear affected. they did say that they would look into improving the spectator experience because of it though

this was because kells is in canada connecting to the lobby, and spectator hadnt been tuned to only accept confirmed frames, so it looked really jank. they said on the stream chat that this wouldnt be a problem in the next stream, they just hadnt implemented proper spectator yet is all

Nah he is sick trust me. This one didn't have many opportunities to use things like his downspecial, or f tilt combos. He's got sauce don't fret.

You can cancel first hit of f-tilt into any of your other tilts, his down special is an explosive leap you can act out of as a finisher or a low power extension if you use it early, etc.

Yea, elephant looks cool. He reminds me of Dedede and that spear guy from Rush Down: Revolt. I think I’m going to try him first.

He backed the game with $2000, which also gave him the ability to play in developer tournaments. Looks like he can play in lobbies even outside of the dev tournies, so that's exactly what he chose to do - Tirq

Yea, spear guy is in Rush Down. I also noticed the similarities between the two characters. Loxodont even has a command grab as his side B and a stomp, with elemental properties, for his down B. The up tilt seems to function the same way as the spear guy too, with the reverse hit box and all

There should be a matchmaking setting where you can select a specific character to play against and you only get matched with people near your skill level who play that specific character (Obviously these matches wouldn’t be ranked so you can’t climb the leaderboard with a better matchup)
