FILM DESCRIPTION:
Hoping to reach the moon by the end of the decade, NASA plans a series of extremely dangerous, unprecedented missions in the early 1960s. Engineer Neil Armstrong joins the space program, spending years in training and risking his life during test flights. On July 16, 1969, the nation and world watch in wonder as Armstrong and fellow astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins embark on the historic Apollo 11 spaceflight.

This does a far better job in describing the redeeming qualities of humanity than planting a flag ever could. A parents love for their child is perhaps the only reason our species has survived so far. Planting a flag makes me proud to be American. Him saying goodbye to his daughter on the moon makes me proud to be human and is more powerful than a flag could ever be.

Many viewers of this movie thought it would be a film about glorifying mans greatest accomplishment of the 20th century, but were then displeased after seeing it because they felt that the producers turned this into a depressing story. That is not the point of this film. The goal of this movie was to show how the death of his daughter and several of his friends, along with being extremely wrapped up in his work with NASA affected Neil’s personal relationship with his family and his entire outlook on life. Yes, it is about the “First Man” to set foot on the moon, everyone knows that part of history. But this movie was an eye-opener to what Neil’s personal life was like, and how he coped with it.

The thing is.. Neil was reportedly known for being a funny guy who liked joking. Honestly, do you think Nasa would have let a man that depressed fly on Apolo 11 ? This movie clearly reinterpreted his personality in order to deliver an emotional yet biased story, that’s kind of sad when History is being rewritten by Hollywood.

E Mick yes but you should watch the movie back. In the movie he is presented as a blank person (like 90% of ryan gosling’s roles btw) who can be mad for no reason and doesn’t have any connection with his own children. Armstrong wasn’t a sociopath at all and that’s why I don’t like that movie which pretends to be an accurate biography and thus makes people (like the author of this comment) think Neil was dead from the inside despite how colourful his personality truly was.

@@romanor2000 They focussed far more on the very private nature of Neil than they did on the warm side of him, I agree. Contrast would have been better than a totally one sided portrayal, because the reality of people like that is they hide the pain. I have no issue with scenes like this, and many of the home life ones, because they are essentially invasive, into what were actually private moments, but the scenes with the other astonauts and with NASA, etc, could have showed more of the lighter side to him

Who cares if this didn’t actually happen? This moment perfectly completes the emotional arc of Neil finally coming to terms with his daughter’s death. He finally got to the Moon for his little girl and now he gets to rest.

Most powerful scene of the movie. The compounding factors of where he was, the broken heart for his daughter and the music tied it all together into a seriously heart wrenching moment that made this grown man halt the distribution of popcorn into my mouth, feel his pain and drip from the eye ball area a little more than I’m comfortable saying.

TLDR: this scene was an assumption by the director, because this isn’t know if he did do this. The director mad assumptions about this part of the movie people don’t really know if he did do this in the scene. During the landing buzz aldrin stated that he saw Neil go to the edge of the crate and stand there, he thought this was weird because I wasn’t part of the mission plan. Buzz never saw him drop anything, just noted he was standing on the edge of a crater. This is possible because Apollo astronauts smuggle stuff in their suits like the music player buzz had. Neil’s son Eric who Neil had a rocky relationship said that if he did, I would actually show he cared. Also Neil’s wife stated that she was never able to find Karen’s bracelet, but state she move so many times It could have just gotten lost.

It's really strange how movies will focus on personal issues instead of a person's achievements. We all have personal "baggage". It's a part of life. We still move forward and get things done.

Earlier in the movie, we hear him say that he'd rather take something useful like fuel on the ship, than jewelry. We, the audience are given a picture of him being extremely rational, to the extent of seeming emotionless to the people around him. Then this scene comes. And we see he did take something of purely emotional value with him, without telling anyone. We see he's not coldhearted or emotionless, but just doesn't know how to express it. This hit really close to home for me, and I'm sure many other people feel the same way. I might've shed more tears in the theaters than I'm comfortable to admit. This movie was outstanding, and it's baffling how it didn't get any recognition.

There was no reason for him too go too that creator, he had some time and did it was said for a sample and I'd like too think for a private freak out and it's not known if he did this but his sons say it would've been something he'd have done. When Hillary (a close friend of his in later years) and Norgay were at the top of Mt Everest in 1953 they did similar stuff.

In an interview with surviving members of the Armstrong family, they said that Neil did keep his daughter's bracelet but when he died they were unable to trace it. We know Neil Armstrong took personal effects with him to the moon (as did other astronauts, it became a tradition to leave something behind) so it's not implausible that this is what happened. But we'll never know for certain. All that matters is that it could have happened.

I knew very little about Neil Armstrong before seeing this film, and learning about all the tragedy in his life was really sad. It felt like a punch to the gut when you see the funeral scene towards the beginning. Losing a child is something that no one should have to experience. It's clear that this tragedy affected Neil throughout his life.

What a gut punch. First you're thinking oh wow, he's thinking of his daughter and how proud she'd be of Papa! Then the glove opens up to reveal her bracelet and suddenly his struggle to get to the Moon takes a whole new relevance and of course you start sobbing like a baby!

Watching this movie in theaters, this scene really hit me hard. Since then, my wife and I had our first child... A little baby girl. As an introvert and someone on the autistic spectrum this movie always touches me. IRL, I lost someone important to me in my own life and was never able to show my grief in public. This scene in particular, where Armstrong deals with his grief in private, is very touching.

I see a lot of comments mentioning “he finally let her go” On the contrary. Him taking the bracelet and leaving it on the moon isn’t a release. He’s transformed forever and nothing will lift the grief off his shoulders. Leaving the bracelet on the moon was simply his way of sharing the accomplishment with his little girl.

Every one knows about Neil Armstrong the astronaut. But noone knows about niel armstrong the man, the father and the husband. This movie was incredible in showing us viewers the hidden struggles he faced and the circumstances that allowed for his historic feat.

His biography, First Man (a book) covered much more than what was in the film. His wife Jan's mention of models of balsa wood in the film is such a detail: it's something that is covered, as Neil kept his childhood airplane models, they existed until destroyed in a fire that nearly claimed the life of his family. One son, to add poignancy, was rescued by Ed White, the astronaut who was his neighbour, who later died in the fire of Apollo 1.

Saw this in theatres with my wife when we were just newly married. Extremely moving scene. Rewatched the movie recently, now that I have a son and daughter, and it's even more heart wrenching. This movie makes me miss my boss, Dr. Eric Keck. The school principal who I was dear friends with. He helped me work with kids in hopes I become a teacher or any position relating to science which I am passionate about. He died of a heart attack back in July of 2020. I still grief over him. He wanted me to have a great career despite of my autism. This year I have become a geology tour guide for Yellowstone National Park. I am finally using my knowledge of science for a career, but still miss him. RIP Dr Eric Keck

One of the most moving scenes in cinematic history. I cried in the theater as the weight of Neil Armstrong's grief for his daughter overshadowed his moment of triumph on the moon. Masterful filmmaking by Damien Chazelle.

I have to say, growing up and learning about the Apollo missions, it really bums me out that I didn't know about this interesting detail. After doing some research, I honestly believe Neil did leave something behind on the moon regarding his deceased daughter. The fact that he really did go to Little West Crater by himself, took a photo of the crater, stayed there for more than 2 minutes alone convinces me strongly he did leave something in the crater. It makes sense. @2:01 you can almost see Neil's shadow became his daughter's shadow. Powerful and emotional.

A tragic but human moment for a man that was a national hero for a generation across the world. Like his sister, I have to hope it's true that he allowed himself this moment of grieving.

This film brings so many mixed emotions for me, Ryan Gosling is fantastic, I love the cinematography, the story, the fact it shows the sacrifice and the reality of what it does to a man taking on such a task. But also the fact I have a daughter about the same age makes some of the scenes in this movie really difficult and emotional to watch, I very rarely cry, but scenes like this instantly makes my eyes water up...it is so powerful. I think when my daughter is grown up I'll be fine, but at the moment it's too relatable.

As someone who lost her daughter, to the same cancer, in 1993 I have to say how accurate the depiction of grief is. Oh, and I also cry buckets when I watch this but it's cathartic and releases tension and rage.

A small detail that gets lost in the greatness of this scene is how when they show the LEM it’s from far away so it’s quite small and poorly lit, contrasting these beautiful, bright close up memories of what is first Neil’s family but soon focuses on his daughter, that’s at the forefront of his mind not the mission. He’s tried in vain to run as far as humanly possible away from his grief but he surrenders to it here and even manages to leave it behind. What a film! wasn’t cliche, it was emotional, nerve wracking and best of all relatable.

There is nothing at all that can compare to losing a child. I lost a baby and ever after I have lived my life incomplete. Even going to the moon wouldn't fix it.

When I watched First Man for the first time, I didn't know what to expect. I seriously thought I would be watching something related to the Saturn V rocket which took them there. Instead, it was the man I was seeing. Neil Armstrong and all he had to endure to get to the Moon and be called first. And this scene follows... I am glued to the screen, unable to blink, or close my mouth. I am frozen with emotion. I let it all out. I haven't cried watching a film in a very long time, but this one hit hard! I cried as much as that rocket spent fuel to get them there. Let me tell you, in my personal opinion, for this scene alone, it was well worth the efforts involved to make the trip. It was an achievement, not just national, but global, and in a very personal way, for a man, the man, the first to set foot on a celestial body other than our own, perhaps helped bring a little bit of emotional closure.

To put this into perspective, this man right here had a whole family and life, the fact that he sacrificed everything he ever had is immaculate. Too leave your reality, ego, and everything you know behind and sacrifice your life to the greater good of man kind in my eyes is one of the most powerful moments ever known too man
