FILM DESCRIPTION:
Hoping to reach the moon by the end of the decade, NASA plans a series of extremely dangerous, unprecedented missions in the early 1960s. Engineer Neil Armstrong joins the space program, spending years in training and risking his life during test flights. On July 16, 1969, the nation and world watch in wonder as Armstrong and fellow astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins embark on the historic Apollo 11 spaceflight.

Yeah....I noticed that. Unfortunately, they had the alarm klaxon going all the time, and if you listen to the audio loop from Eagle, they aren't there.

When Ryan Gosling does the speech walking outside (which makes sense because we've heard him the whole movie), they really made sure it was very close to Neil's original cadence too. It was a nice touch.

I like think that music just naturally plays in their head. That's why they didn't panic when their fuel was low, the computer was overwhelmed, or the landing site was too rough. Just go to manual, focus on their training, and find an alternate landing site. Most importantly, with the largest audience ever 240,000 miles away-They made it look easy!

Gonna be honest, not even remotely moved by the musical composition of this movie. It's not BAD music but to me it just does not even remotely convey the depth of what going to the moon really meant. To be fair I know why the music was written the way it was after listening to an interview from the director but I disagree with it unfortunately. Just being nit picky though. I personally feel the music needs more depth. The movie needed Hans Zimmer.

This really demonstrates aspects of the lunar landing I'd never considered, for example, how mind blowing fast the LM was traveling over the surface prior to landing, the relative fragility and primitiveness of the spacecraft, the muscle memory the astronauts had to develop, the dangers of the landing itself, to say nothing of the flight as a whole, the cool demeanors maintained by everyone involved, and really just how insane of an undertaking this was, so soon after man discovered flight.

Well the multi staged liquid fuel rocket was patented by robert Goddard in 1914 so it is actually considerably less advanced than a jet engine, it is just a firework in principle. Now pulse jets, they are a work of utter awesomeness.

The lunar module would land itself. That's the awesome part. The crew were there to monitor it's performance in performing that landing and relay critical info/cross check with ground control. This is akin to a gung ho seat of their pants dramatic version i.e. 12 minutes of actual controlled descent cut down to a couple of minutes and exagerrated for dramatic effect.

@@jonathanlynch8372 except the last seven minutes Armstrong had to switch to manual because their computer program was leading the LM into an Boulder field. He leveled at 600 ft then started blitzing across the surface until he slowly touched it down at around 175 ft.

1:13 First wide shot of the moon in the entire movie!! The scale here, coupled with the incredible soundtrack gives me goosebumps every time. Weather it’s with NASA, SpaceX, or Blue Origin, I can’t wait until we finally go back.

It rebooted instantly, several times even though it was being overloaded with data from a radar that should have been turned off, and still guided them to the surface properly. A modern cellphone would have still been saying No Coverage as they crashed into the Moon.

I think there are real reasons to ask questions as there are a lot of holes in the story and the footage and that a reasoned discussion is a scientific direction to pursue. If you just all hate each other because you just seek to enforce your own predetermined point of view then perhaps you are falling into a trap that was set in 1969.

Richard yes, that to me is probably the most powerful element. During the launch and the landing - big, powerfully, emotional scenes - that's his daughter's theme playing in the background. What a juxtaposition of associations!

I think quite the opposite, it was so over dramatized as hell, the shaking scenes inside the ships were insane and completely unrealistic, characters had nothing to do with the real ones, and it was plain boring. On the other hand the Apollo 11 movie from 2019 was exceptional, it really shows how things really were without all the hollywood stuff that ruins the experience.

3:57 - 4:09 I really love this scene so much. The way they angled the camera facing toward the surface of the moon, like the real one, and the subtle music/score after the landing. It's like "they did it, they finally did it". Such an amazing movie.

Yeah, while fun cinema, nothing about this scene is a genuine recreation of the actual landing. They hammed it up for the movie, probably because it takes more to keep the younger generations attention... But the reality was already as captivating as could be. Watch this same scene in From The Earth To The Moon and you'll see an ACTUAL recreation and can see yourself why this over dramatized film really doesn't do justice to these men.

@@-First-Last Nixon had a lot of things destroyed because he feared they could, somehow, fall into Soviet hands. Things like specialized tools to build the Apollo spacecraft and Saturn V booster. (You couldn't exactly build those with off-the-pegboard wrenches from Harbor Freight.) Bottom line, the tools were melted down.

Watching this scene in IMAX was an experience I will never forget. 1:13 onwards the soundtrack and the first wide angle shot of the moon, that moment had me in tears. I get goosebumps almost every time I listen to this.

This movie captured something far more personal than it might have suggested at first blush. It wasn't all about the adventure of humans leaving one celestial body for another, although the achievement is one of our most immense and important. It was about the love of a father for his lost child. It's the one thing that really stuck with me after watching.

Nx Doyle, yep, you got it. It didn't just depict that historic moment and leading up to it, but it added that extra layer of his relationship with his daughter. That music theme in the soundtrack is his daughter's theme, lilting in the background as he's concentrating on his landing. His daughter never left him...... (Shit....I got tears now just thinking about it...)

You guys nailed it. I'm a manned space enthusiast, so anytime I see a film about manned space I'm all over it. The moon landing was used to tell an even larger story. Being the first man to walk on the moon pales in comparison to a father's love for his child. I saw this film in the theater alone while on business in California. I was a wreck, and all I wanted to do was hug my girls tight back in Florida.

Yeah, imagine the amount of adrenaline they had in their blood. Neil was recorded with a heart rate of above 160 and Buzz with somewhere in the 130 iirc. Of course Neil was an experience fighter pilot and test pilot, but this was still something else.

Neil Armstrong and Buz Aldrin , Micheal Collins,true heros I will always remember. If you wish to become something in your life and make this a better world for having lived in it. It is beyond me why this film didn't get more praise or take home oscars. It is one of the best theater experiences I had in 2018 by far and it's personal approach to telling Neil's story is unique and emotional. This was the first time I actually felt like I took the journey with the astronauts, even more so than apollo 13. The soundtrack is also something else.

You can see why it won an Oscar for Special Effects (& sound editing, mixing) over Avengers, Black Panther, and Solo. Awesome practical effect of an actual near death experience over limitless CGI fantasy overplay. Nice touch of using the real Charlie Duke audio from Houston. So suspenseful, I had to remember when I was 10 and watched the landing and, of course, it was a piece of cake. Loved that sound track too. A real sense of inevitability.

Nothing approaches "Interstellar" and that docking scene. My theater broke out into spontaneous applause for that one scene, the only sound throughout the whole movie. People were collapsed in their seats afterwards. Still giving me the shakes 6 years later.

This film captured the heroism of these men. This was basically a one trip mission, it was success or nothing at all. Best part Buzz Aldrin says we cant land there. Neil Armstrong response- "We're going Manual!" Changes history and lands AMERICA on the moon.

My skin prickles watching these 5 minutes of film. Neil and Buzz's feelings on reaching the moon must be indescribable. The scene of the astronauts trying to control the LEM and avoid the crater brings tears to my eyes. That scene synthesizes all the human effort to dominate the forces of the universe. Thanks to NASA: its engineers, its scientists and its brave astronauts. A strong hug from an Argentine who feels deep admiration for the best that the United States has given to the world.

This music is beautiful I believes the film is attempting to relay the spirit of the boy scout adventurers especially Armstrong who defied death on many occassions and wasn't gonna let some silly descent into a gravitional environment he had no clue about defeat him. He was learning how to navigate the LEM as he flew the LEM down to the lunar surface. The heart of an explorer is a wonderful thing.

Jesus the way the lunar surface looks through the windows... so mysterious, ancient and in a weird way... sinister. Awesome shot to include. It makes you feel so small when the moon has just been a white dot in the night sky your entire life. Awesome movie.

I was born in 1964. There are about 3 things I remember as a child living in the 60's. This is one of them. It was THAT monumental a moment for the world. Even my 5 year old self could sense it. And during this sequence for real..... The World held its breath.....

Nixon had a backup speech prepared if the mission was aborted or the LM crashed. Had the LM Descent Stage run out of fuel the Ascent Stage would automatically engage to return them to lunar orbit and reunite with the CM/SM Columbia.

Extremely underrated movie! I got chills when I saw this scene at the movie theater, the score is simply incredible. I was on the edge of my seat during the this scene, despite knowing the outcome of it. Just epic! What an accomplishment by mankind!

I was 10 years old and remembered the landing. We as a Family just like the Rest of America, watched and watched and watched. FINALLY, the Astronauts walk on the Moon. I was living in Denver, CO and walked out our front door facing East and remember looking directly at the MOON. KNOWING THAT there were 2 Men standing on the Moon. Every night I would look at the Moon. I WILL NEVER FORGET. Armstrong, his Naval Training, don't crack under pressure, make the landing on the Moon. Who was the 1st Astronaut? Shephard USN, 1st Orbit, Naval Aviator, yes USMC but still a Naval Aviator. Apollo 13, Lovell USN - stayed cool and saved the crew. What were the firsts USN, USMC, USN and USN

Technically he's not wrong about Shepard being the first ASTROnaut. Yuri Gagarin was a COSMOnaut. Don't ask me why the Soviets had a different name, but I remember reading that they thought the Americans were terribly arrogant in their naming for some reason, like 'Astro' was bragging or something.

Fabulous: At 65 I'm still emotional watching this. I was 14 at the time. For Christmas I was gifted the "Eagle Book of Rockets and Space Travel"...before the Apollo 11 landing. For a childs book it was/is rammed with info about the Space Program. It was actually humbling even then to see what these guys, and NASA achieved. Currently reading First Man, the bio of Neil Armstrong. 50+ years on, one despairs at the current mindless, mundane and pitiful preoccupations of certain people...This was a unifying human endeavour. We need a reprise (preferably not Jeff Bezos though , please)

Not sure, but It appears from news footage that the public did not realize during the landing that Eagle had overshot the Landing Zone, was running low on fuel or that Armstrong was hovering around for a landing zone on manual. Do you recall if this was ever revealed in post news commentary. Wally Schirra who was with Cronkite would have understood but he didn’t communicate the implications during the broadcast. Cronkite was ready to feint as it was. Maybe that played a factor.

In contrast to this clip, in which Buzz Aldrin is yelping in near-panic most of the time, in real life the one time his voice DID raise was when Neil was flying horizontally to get over the crater, and he stepped up his horizontal speed to 47 fps forward (about 30 mph). He said, "you're pegged on horizontal velocity," and Neil had to slow it down.
