Angelina had music lessons starting at age 4 but NO vocal training as her teachers were smart enough to know she was a natural. Angelina was around her 9th birthday when she created this arrangement, as she always does, and delivered this powerful, emotional performance. Please read her bio. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on RU-vid. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. *Why Angelina always performs barefoot* At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. Angelina, at age 6 and 7, did record a few songs in a recording studio at her school, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 7 year old. At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. When asked what she would like to do with the prize money she won (500,000 kroner or about $80,000), Angelina replied, “I want to give it to the poor children”. Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on RU-vid went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old. In December 2014, Angelina realized a life-long desire to sing at the Save the Children's Peace Prize Celebration which is part of the Noble Peace Prize celebration. Angelina’s family took her to United States, Brazil, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, Singapore among other corners of Earth, to perform for heads of state and to help raise money for charity. All before Angelina turned 14. At age 9, Angelina recorded a music video covering the 1956 Jay Hawkin’s classic, “I Put a Spell On You”. The video begins by showing Angelina writing her “wishes” for how she wants to perform the song. Angelina has always created her own arrangements for her cover songs. At age 10 and just a week before her 11th birthday, Angelina recorded a demo of “I’m Still Holding Out for You”. Her family never pursued having that recording officially released but someone leaked it on a RU-vid video. Thankfully, everyone involved with that song is now ok with the leaked version. Many angels (fans) believe this is one of Angelina’s best performances. When Angelina was 11, she performed a number of concerts in Norway with a jazz/rock band. Those concerts included up to 14 songs, each remarkably performed. Angelina seems to be at her best when on stage, never nervous, only 100% confident. Also at age 11, Angelina recorded her “It’s Magic” album which has, at times, been in the top 10 best selling jazz albums. On June 27, 2018, at age 12, Jordan performed “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London. She has said that was the high point of her young career which was already in it’s 6th year. During 2018, Angelina lost her paternal grandfather, her friend Avicii and one of her idols, Aretha Franklin. She did a moving tribute for each. In 2019, Angelina accepted an invitation to compete in the 2nd season of America’s Got Talent (AGT), The Champions. She had, since age 3, wanted to perform for Simon Cowell and she earned his praise with her genius arrangement of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The surviving members of Queen loved it so much they put a link to it on their Twitter. Angelina was eliminated after covering Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. Angelina’s family refused to sign any agreement with AGT. Angelina, before age 14, had covered more than 130 songs from 80 different artists, spanning at least 8 genres, all of which are available on RU-vid. Angelina has always made changes to each song she covers and often her version is preferred over the original. The pandemic hit shortly after her performances on AGT and likely caused a change of plans by her family, most notably her Uncle Michael who is her manager. Her family agreed to a contract with Republic Records in August 2020. Republic Records declared Angelina Jordan their highest priority new artist. Reportedly her family requested Republic to allow her as normal a childhood as possible and therefore have yet to fully promote her. During the pandemic, Angelina was often seen buying meals for the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. In November 2020, Angelina released “Million Miles” which she wrote after the passing of her beloved maternal grandfather. She dedicated the song to anyone who has ever lost a loved one. Angelina had previously released, 3 other original songs: “What is Life”, “Oslo” and “Shield” In April 2021, her original “7th Heaven” was released. A jazzy, danceable, inspiring song. Angelina has posted numerous short performances on Tik Tok and Instagram. Angelina had concerts in Norway in July 2022. Personally, Angelina as a great human being and her music came into my life when I needed it most. Her music has improved the quality of my life more than I can express. She arguably brings the most confident, versatile, seemingly effortless, and fearless vocal artistry found today (whether measured across artists, genres, or decades). You may think this an exaggeration but listen to a few more of her many performances (160+ covers plus original songs - all on YT) and you will see! She has been performing at a high level all over the world since age 8 when she won Norway's Got Talent singing Billie Holiday, Nancy Sinatra, and Gershwin. It is the rare singer that can, as Angelina has done, go from Queen to "Screamin" Jay Hawkins to Adele to Elvis to Whitney Houston to Michael Jackson to Etta James to James Brown to Amy Winehouse to the Beatles (and many others in between) and do them all justice! If you want to hear music, listen to anyone. If you want to feel music, listen to Angelina. She will stagger you with her ability to find and bring forth the 'essence', the emotional message of nearly any song. You have far to go with Angelina. A few people have mentioned why she sings barefoot 🥺 This goes back to what I said about maturity, it seems like she is able to empathise at a level beyond her years. Also sometimes at a young age it can be an eye opener to see things you take for granted have so much worth to other people. No wonder she can bring emotion to her singing.

I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RU-vid, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she con convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

In all of my long life I have heard nearly all of the past and current greatest female vocalists, but I have never encountered anyone like Angelina Jordan. You don’t just listen to Angelina. The girl complimented Angelina on her shoes and Angelina noticed her scarred bare feet so she gave them to her, and the little girl told Angelina she would pray for her every day. You don't know what you've let yourself in for. I have listened to her every day for 8 years...since she was 8. I caught her on an episode of Lillyhammer . I looked her up and found she auditioned for NORWAYS GOT TALENT at 7 was 8 by her winning performance of Summertime. Saw her huge outdoor performance age 8, complete with back up singers WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKE. you watched this aged 9. Her love of jazz came from her grandma who was a poet and painter. Also was a famous child prodigy. I think that experience allowed the family to know how to nurture her without exploiting her. They have tried to apply brakes but the drive comes from Angelina. There is a clip of her singing with a mike before she was 2 in tune, and another refusing to sing along with other kindergarten children as the noise offended her perfect pitch. Her family paid for a studio session as a surprise and we see a 6 year old Angelina brimming with excitement and singing her little heart out. There are just short of 200 covers on Utube and tik tok. Every genre and style. Her first love was jazz though. She has a very loyal international fan base called Angels who have watched her grow up so can be a little protective.

You've got over 180 covers and 5 originals to choose from, so there's a journey ahead for you. Of the 4 NGT performances, only NGT 1 and the final, NGT 4, have English subtitles or closed captions. I apologize to all those that follow Angelina's "Spell on You" reactions, but I have tirelessly played this video maybe a couple hundred times and am still dumbfounded by the performance and delighted by the shocked reactors. I cut and paste this following reply all the time now because it gets tiring typing it out so often .... so, again, I apologize, but it must be done: Angelina wrote an incredibly emotional song called "Million Miles" in memory of her beloved grandfather who had just passed away (at that time). She was 13/14 years old. She recorded it later as her first single for her new label, Republic Records. Do a reaction to the black and white live studio version. It is one of three companion videos. The others are the actual official Republic video music release and a lyrics version. I highly recommend doing a reaction to the lyrics version second. It is the same recording as the official version but has graphics done by her grandmother, a noteworthy Iranian artist. With these videos, she has produced a quite stunning beginning of her career with Republic. Also, the pianist in the live studio video is a very high up Republic executive. Angelina commented that when she was in the studio doing the song she cried throughout the session. You can hear and see the pain she feels for her loss when you watch the live studio set. She said she wanted the song to be for anyone that had such a loss. With consideration to that background to her song, you will get as emotional as she was when she recorded it. She has this magical vocal power that draws you into this other dimension. She has always put her soul and emotions into her works. She arranges most all her music, as she has been doing since she began performing over the past ten plus years.
The Creator bestowed the essence of music and the voices from the greats and gave humanity this gift. She will be Queen of the industry one day. While I'm sure she has had some vocal training over the years, the jazz vocal techniques she displays on this rendition is something that she has developed on her own by studying all the jazz greats of the past on RU-vid. This girl loves singing and is her own biggest driving force. Fortunately for us, she has shared her journey from a young age on RU-vid so we can witness the evolution of the jazz master she has become today.
This is "one extreme", stylistically speaking, in her vast catalog (almost 200 different songs at this point, in several hundred individual performances). There are a few performances that are, let's say, "in the same ballpark" as this one, but she never went so hard on a vocal ever again - even when she would perform the same song live, later on. Almost everything else she's done, both before and after this music video, has been quite a bit more subtle. She sang this song in this way because that's what the song called for (in this particular arrangement, anyway, based on the original by Screamin' Jay Hawkins). She sings other songs very differently, because that's what those songs call for. I'm not going to say that there's only one "best way" to sing any given song, but what I will say is that Angelina has a real knack for making her version of a song feel like "the way the song _should_ have been sung".😊 (Get comfortable… this is a very long comment.) She's always been pretty "all over the map" in terms of musical genres and singing styles, but the general trend in her "public singing career" (which started when she was 7) has been a slow "branching out" from slower, classic jazz tunes and pop ballads to more modern, pop-diva type stuff. But that's a *huge* oversimplification. For example, her first-ever vocal performance caught on camera was a rendition of (the title line of) Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You", at the _insanely_ young age of 18 months (the video evidence of that is here on YT), and one of her most recent professionally produced music videos (from 6 months ago) is her own (re)arrangement of the late-'60s Elvis classic "Suspicious Minds". I say a "slow branching out", but actually her development strikes me as being closer to "punctuated equilibrium" than an example of "gradualism". In my mind, there are four distinct phases of her singing career: 1. Beginnings, before her public debut. Ages 1½ to nearly 8. Like I said, she started singing at 18 months, and for years she only sang for friends and family (even though she _wanted_ to sing for the general public at least since the age of 3, when she announced that she wanted to sing for Simon Cowell on one of his shows - presumably this was _America's Got Talent_ since she was probably living in the U.S. at the time [she was born in Oslo and moved back there around the time she started school]). Frustratingly few videos of her singing before she was 6 have been posted by her family, but a handful of videos from sessions she did in a modest community recording studio at 6 and/or 7 have been posted to her Fanclub Mosarz channel [i.e., Angelina Jordan Fanclub Mosarz] in the last few years, and they reveal that at that age she was still struggling a bit with consistency in her vocals (i.e., she was still singing more or less "like a child"). 2. Public debut on _Norske Talenter_ [Norway's Got Talent] at 7-almost-8 (broadcast when she was 8) up to around 10½. It seems that when she stepped onto the NGT stage, she "leveled up" in a massive way, and (with very rare, admittedly debatable, exceptions) "never looked back" (i.e., her singing has been damn-near perfect since then). In this period, in which most of her stuff was seen on TV and in live concerts/appearances (as opposed to later years, where most of her stuff would be posted directly to YT, etc.), she sang mostly classic jazz ballads (e.g., "Fly Me to the Moon", "Summertime", "What a Difference a Day Makes", "At Last"), pop ballads ("Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", "I'll Be There", "Unchained Melody"), and Christmas songs ("Silent Night", "White Christmas"). By the end of this period, she was starting to branch out into more modern fare - more Adele and Amy Winehouse, for example (although she first recorded covers of those artists [AFAIK] at 6-or-7, and 8, respectively). This period also saw the release of her her first "original" song: a cover of Amy's "Back to Black" featuring _completely_ rewritten lyrics. (It's literally a whole different song, lyrically speaking, so it counts as an original in my book.) 3. Ages 10½ to 13-almost-14. A noticeably maturing voice and an explosion of different singing styles, at first only recorded in "private" videos that were not widely seen until years later (again, on her AJFM channel). Eventually, she created her CoverChannel here on YT and started posting covers there pretty regularly. She also released three more original songs, two solely written by her ("Oslo" and "What Is Life", released on an album called _It's Magic_ in 2018) and one co-written with a songwriting team ("Shield", released as a single late that same year). Her covers in this period span all kinds of genres and singing styles, from Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" to Alan Walker's "Faded", to Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", to Amy Winehouse's "Valerie", to Lana Del Rey's "Born to Die", to Elvis's "How Great Thou Art", to Miley Cyrus's "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart", to Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing", to Audrey Hepburn's "Moon River", to… many, many others. Many fans would point to this period as the time in which Angelina became one of the best singers ever. (And I have to agree.) 4. "Bohemian Rhapsody" to the present. Her appearance on _America's Got Talent: The Champions_ in spring 2020 (recorded in October 2019 and broadcast starting in January 2020, when she was still 13) finally fulfilled 3-year-old Angelina's wish to "sing for Simon" and brought her much attention for her novel reworking of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" (basically doubling [or more] her fanbase in a few weeks). Unfortunately, she was not able to completely capitalize on her latest "bump" in fame, as the world shut down soon afterwards. Through most of 2020 she couldn't even post new covers online because she didn't have the necessary equipment. It was a dark time for her (and for everyone, of course, but a real let-down for her in particular, given the possibilities that vanished almost overnight). On the plus side, she signed with Republic Records (after many years of saying no to record labels, producers, etc., who wanted to snag her) and released her first original under that label, "Million Miles" in November 2020. In 2021, she released her latest original, "7th Heaven", and started posting tons of short videos on TikTok and Insta. This allowed her to indulge in another explosion of different kinds of covers (mostly partial ones, consisting of just one of two verses), including songs by Bruno Mars, Estelle, Dua Lipa, Sting, Lionel Ritchie, Cher, LP, Harry Styles, and many others. She also started pretty regularly accompanying herself on guitar, revealing that she had improved a great deal on that instrument since her first such attempt, back in December 2019. She's even started playing guitar in "official" performances - in music videos (the aforementioned "Suspicious Minds") and live concerts (her summer concerts in Norway last year). She doesn't do a whole lot… but she's doing it. (She also plays the piano, which she has been doing informally "forever" [there are pictures of her doing so as a baby] and more formally, in "lessons" in and/or after school, for at least a few years, I think. There are many videos of her singing and playing the piano in informal settings, from age 8 to the present, but she has never done so in an "official" performance, like she's started doing with the guitar.) Started singing with a mike, luckily videod at one and a half. She had lessons on how to protect her voice and vocal exercises. The vocal teacher they tried to hire in the beginning stressed it was essential that no coach come in and interfere with her natural tone and instinctive approach to tecnique and music. They said traditional coaching would be disastrous. Her tone come to her immersion listening to jazz greats from a baby.

She was not groomed or trained to be what she is. She is a savant. If you really want to understand what you are looking at in this song, you would have to go back to the original version of the song by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and understand that she was reinterpreting the original. She wrote the arrangement. She made all of those creaetive choices. This is almost incomprehensible given the execution. Angelina's diversity is astonishing, and you will see her continue to mature as an artist. Keep in mind, she comes out of the great jazz traditions. She was obviously raised on a diet of Billie Holiday, Etta James, Nina Simone, Ella, etc. When she covers more contemporary artists and songs, she has this ability to pay just enough homage to the original, while making it uniquely her own. I would listen to her do 'I'd rather go Blind,' Rhianna's 'Stay,' Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' her two Adel Covers, and her cover of Elvis's "Suspicious Minds." That will walk you through her work at 12, 13, 15, and 16 years of age. You will get a sense of her progression both artistically and technically. I believe there is a strong probability she will turn out to be one of the greats people will listen to long after her death.

If you could coach that they would. These are techniques of singers into that kind of stuff for decades. So I don't know, suppose the super young formative years are huge, and taking the odd interest in incredibly old styles at a young age, singing every waking hour and loving it, produces that maybe. Not a lot of sample size out there of kids knowing they want to be singers and loving real music by 3 years old. Everyone around her must have balanced that whole situation so brilliantly, her family deserves so much credit it isn't even funny. God she's something else these days, voice is so beautiful, control, massive skillset, almost 17, like two days I think.
With Angelina, there isn't any particular song where you experience everything she can do. She tastefully includes only those techniques, textures, embellishments, or whatever is needed to interpret any given song. So you can literally watch 100 of her videos and be completely surprised by her on the 101st. She is my favorite artist right now. Dimash and Diana are beyond anything found on Earth and aren't included in my top favorites merely because there are so few songs by them in English. This is too bad because Dimash is undoubtedly the most technically skilled singer in the history of recording and there is also so much more to his artistry than just the technical part.

But a Gothic cathedral demands respect. So it's not small venue Aurora laughing with the audience, but she was so good ...
