They started as 6 members in 2012 but 3 members left soon after, so they asked their vocal coach (Solji) and a trainee (Hyelin) that was originally rejected to join them, which made them a 5 member group. Then they were almost completely unknown until the end of 2014, they were almost on the verge of disbanding because it was tough financially, their manager wasn't even getting paid at one point. Then a fancam of Hani performing "Up and down" went viral, it has more than 30 millions views, which is the most of any female kpop artist, and only one or two bts fancams have more views, and not by much, which is crazy because they were completely unknown at the time. This fancam saved their career, "Up and down", which had been released a few months before and hadn't been successul made a complete comeback on the charts, it was so crazy that music shows even invited EXID to come promote the song even though the promotion period had already ended (which I think is the first time it happened in kpop history). After that they came out with great songs again and again. But their trouble is not over, when they finally were successful, Solji (the former vocal coach), who is the leader and main vocal got sick and was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and had to take a break for almost 2 years, from the end of 2016 to their full group comeback in November 2018.

Ahh EXID... My first kpop love... Probably the only group capable of doing sexy concepts this quirky and tounge-in-cheek. Not to mention how funny these women are outside of mvs, they have a great dynamic together, they're up there in terms of how entertaining they are...
OMG I'VE NEVER CLICKED SO FAST!!! EXID in general had a pretty rough start. They stared as a 6 membered group with the song "Whoz that Girl" and a few months after debut, 3 members suddenly left the group. As a result, they pulled in Hyelin, who was cut from the original line up and Solji, who was the group's vocal coach. They did a few releases with moderate reception and were at a pretty low point by the time "Up&Down" was released. Yes "Up&Down" is one of those songs that if you've stuck around Kpop enough, you've definitely heard parts of it in the passing. That's the song that helped blow up. Basically there is a fancam of Hani performing it at an event that went viral and subsequently caused the song to fly back up the charts 6months after they had already finished promoting it. So as a result, the group went back on music shows to promote is and they got their first music show win from it. The company also put Hani on a bunch of variety shows and people found her to be quirky and very entertaining to watch which further helped the group climb to the top. But the a lot of the broadcast stations weren't too fond Up&Down and deemed the hip thrusts too sexual. So they had to alter the choreography to satisfy the broadcast station regualtions. As a response to that, they released "Ah Yeah" which the MV kind of plays on the idea of censorship (you should check it out). Also funfact, they are one of the tallest Kpop girl groups ever (average height I believe is 168.35 cm). I think the only girl group taller than them was 9Muses who's average is around 170-171cm. Though Weeekly may also surpass them since they have a bunch of members over 170cm. Hahaha if you thought Up&Down's "story" is hard to understand, "Every Night" is another side of weird. I believe even the girls said they didn't know what the storyline was supposed to be. Yes I would say Solji is probably one of the strongest girl group main vocalists. I mean, she wasn't the group's vocal coach for nothing. She not only won the first ever episode of King Of Masked singer, but she won it a second time and held on to the win for some time. She also held the highest score on Duet Song Festival along with her partner (idk if that ever got broken). But she's basically a monster when it comes to singing competitions. At this point, EXID's future is a bit unknown. Their contract expired in 2019 and not all members renewed. But they all emphasized that they did not disband and do plan on returning as a group in the future. They also continued to promote as EXID under their Japanese label which didn't expired until the end of 2020. However, throughout 2020, the members who did renew their contract with Banana Culture all eventually left as well and from the looks of it, the company seems to have closed its doors. So now the possibility of an EXID return is in question.
the latest from Hani and Hyelin is that there is no disband - each one is pursuing thie own individual thing, Hani & Jeonghwa went into acting, Hyelin, is doing youtuber and variety shows - LE is working with Shinsadong Tiger, and his new girl group, also writing songs - Solji is having a great solo career ---
EXID is a group that everyone must get into at one point. Every member has so much to offer. Also, LE is so talented like she writes so many popular songs and has mentored so many female kpop rappers that we know today. A legend. I wish she got more recognition
Exid is one of my favourite girlgroups to be honest! i never heard about them until i saw them at Arirangs Simply Kpop back when they debuted and the Charisma was just SO intriguing that i immediately looked them up afterwards. Their stage presence is seriously no joke, especially with LEs rap and everyones vocals. When they walked towards the stage, one of the viewers in the bottom row had her legs a bit stretched out and LE stumbled over them a bit. The fan was looking absolutely horrified but LE just laughed and gave her a little wink. And later when they were on stage, she looked back at the fan and just gave her a little "i'm watching you" hand motion, it was so funny. They just seemed increibly down to earth and like such fun people to be around
fun fact: in many of their music videos EXID kill a man. I particularly like LIE's storyline. Hani's name tag says: KILL X. X broke Hyelin's heart, and their mission is to kill him. (in the lyrics translations you'll see how much they hate him). They try but fail, that's when we see Jeonghwa unconscious in the elevator, his shadow cast over her. He hurt Jeonghwa. I LOVE EXID so much, they (and Infinite) get ALL the credit for making me want to deep dive KPOP beyond Blackpink when I started 2 years ago. Hani is by far my female ULT. Every Night has to be one of my favorite songs and I wish it came after Up & Down so that the general public would love and appreciate it more. It always remained one of the girls’ favorite songs that they wished had done better.

Exid is one of my ults and I feel like I have to inform you about how amazing their discography is. Not a single time have I listened to an Exid song and not liked it. Their b-sides are so good and their solos show their different vocal colors. I hope you continue to enjoy them!!!

My absolute QUEENS!! I love them so much and when I first started listening and watching them, I had the same reaction ("they're beautiful and I'm gay", well i'm bi, but y'know). "Every night" is an underrated gem, their voices are heavenly and I just keep falling in love with them. Solji and Hyelyn are such a powerful duo of main vocals that they take your breath away. i highly recommend to react to the rest of their music videos and listen to their bsides too, their discography is UNMATCHED, no skips. they're my favorite girlgroup along with snsd, their concepts are always so fresh, hands down most original mvs in kpop, both the vocal and rap line are one of the best in kpop + they're all good dancers even tho their choreographies are a bit too much for south korea's standards... i wished they got more recognition, they're truly such a talented group.
I wouldnt necessarily say LE is underappreciated. Shes generally pretty well regarded as one of the best rappers to come through kpop. She has tons of writing and production credits, for other groups as well, not just EXID, so plenty of other groups know well her talent level. The only time i would have ever said she was underappreciated was.... well when barely anyone knew who EXID was. lol. Glad to see you starting the journey. When you get to Ah Yeah, make sure to pay attention to the MV. People used to just focus on their sexiness (which is somewhat fair, they were aware of their power and knew it was a strength they could use), but Ah Yeah is everything I love about this group distilled to perfection. I don't want to spoil it so you have your own analysis but..... its just amazing.
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaah EXID!! To be completely honest I've never really liked "Up and Down" but it was sooooooo iconic back in the days. I also loooooooved "Every Night" (my very first EXID song and I had both your expression and had a hugeeeeee laugh at the same time. I also was looking forward to their songs because of their awesome vocals and it reminded somehow of Spica ). Also like "Ah Yeah" (and its message underneath), "DDD" and "I Love You". For the info, LE wrote and composed "L.I.E.". Solji was their vocal coach and is my bias (I shed tears when I saw her surprise appearance during one of their concert as she was on break for a long time because of medical issues). Really enjoy watching them off stage as well. And as an InSomnia, I wished to see Solji and Dreamcatcher interact during a Korean culture festival last year in 2020 where they both performed (unfortunately there was none on screen). 😥 Hope to see them collab one day or maybe see a cover.
I think you confused this song and MV 8:20 This song “Every Night - EXID” That lyrics are them being sad about how their lover doesn’t true love the but just wants them for sex every night. (8:49 LE’s rap part “Booty calls” are mentioned in english) So this is a way of getting revenge? like they get chilies and squeeze them up, then take them to where. he’s sitting with multiple womens around him. they throw the chillies on the ground so the air is filled with it which cause everyone to feel sick and spit out their drinks on the guy and then pass out because the chilies is harmful to them. That’s why they are dancing around gas masks with dead bodies behind them. My fav song forever and I hope they’re reunion again ;)
Think About is a very very very very good B-Side from their Hippity Hop album. If I remember correctly that's the first album they put out with the lineup we know, because they had members who had to leave in their early days after things with regard to agreements on co-management from the agency side. Anyway EXID really has a very good discography. Worth a deep dive.
DDD and Night Rather Than Day are my favorites from them and I think you're really gonna enjoy them, especially the second one, considering the style of music you usually say you enjoy.
