Been a while, but the way I interpret it (with the context of Gerard's comments about the emo genre, and the daily mail incident [look it up, it was fuckin crazy when it happened, people are idiots]) is that the culture (the songs) is all about angst and self hate and such, and so while for some it serves as a way to pour their feelings out, for others it causes them become more depressed

Did you notice how almost every song leads into the next one? Interlude leading into Vemon, for example. Edit: I love how Gerard Way loses his shit just melting screaming his head off. You have Ray Toro and Frank Iero to thank for guitars. Also, the story is that a killer is sent to hell and he barters with the Devil for his lover's soul (Demolition Lovers, look it up). Her soul in exchange for the souls of 1000 evil men. He's getting his revenge on the ppl who killed them while trying to save her soul. He fails. Everything is muddled because the narrator is not only unreliable but absolutely insane. Some fans even theorize that all the albums connect into one big story.

I heard that in I never told you what i do for a living he discovers he is the last person he has to kill, because with killing all that evil people, he has become one. So he has to decide between staying alive or killing himself and saving her soul, knowing they'll never be back together. Also I heard that what killed her was the medications they used to take (thank you for the venom), and the man just dies in the end. If they were both dead from the beginning, when he dies they would be together in hell, so I guess it makes more sense.

@ivantorres2357
@ivantorres2357 5 лет назад
valy0f actually it is about Gerard’s relationship with alcohol the term Jet Set life is a term for a social group of wealthily people who travel to participate in these social activities in which he is referring to the band because they’re constantly touring and during his early years of this he was going through bad depression in which he would abuse drugs and alcohol which almost made him commit suicide which is why the name of the song is “The Jetset Life Is Gonna Kill You” I found all this out through a very interesting documentary of MCR called Life on the murder scene you should check it out

I like your wrap up. Black Parade is iconic, and songs like House of Wolves, Teenagers, and Mama are by far their hardest hitting and best demonstrations of power, but the consistency of Three Cheers show that these guys weren't a fluke and took a very exploitable genre (and fanbase) and exposed it to the brilliance any musical genius can introduce into a particular sound. MCR acts as a very easy gap into metal and hard rock, and makes emo more accessible for people who are unsure what to try first

@yeah8926
@yeah8926 6 лет назад
i just wanted to mention, the concept behind three cheers is particularly confusing to understand, and requires quite some research. unlike the black parade, mcr was much more vague in showing the meaning behind this album. the most supported theory though has a pretty awesome fictional element. it's about a man, and his lover gets shot and killed in a gunfight. he makes a deal with the devil to bring his her back to life by taking the lives of 1,000 evil men, to then find out he is the thousandth person, and him and girlfriend are both executed for his crimes. now it may be confusing to understand how it connects with the songs on the album, but after a couple listens and looking into the lyrics it makes a lot of sense. gerard also based the songs off of stories (ex. "to the end" was based off of a story called a rose for emily) and past experiences (helena was based off of his grandmother elena's death). ANYWAYS that was long but yeah even though its hard to dig out the story in the album its actually very interesting!

Hey-o. Some context for the story in the album, you kinda got most of everything wrong. Our main character (who I will be calling "the Man") is killed along with his lover (they are believed to be the Demolition Lovers from MCR's first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, who are killed at the end of the album). He makes a deal with the Devil, where is he brings the Devil the souls of 1000 evil men and women than he can be with his lover again. We can see signs of this in songs like You Know What They Do to Guys Like Me in Prison, where during the guitar solo, we hear the Man screaming that he is going to burn down a hotel in the hopes of raising the number of people he has killed. Also, during the time of recording this album, frontman Gerard Way was on a legendary alcoholic and drug abuse streak, and nearly killing himself. Drugs are mention in The Jetset Life is Gonna Kill You, where he says, "She bought the last line, of just the worst kind". The line is a line of cocaine, which Gerard was using at one point. There are also references to homosexuality throughout the album, such as in the chorus of You Know What They Do to Guys Like Me in Prison (Prison for short), where the Man says, "I don't know , How we're just two men as God had made us, Well, I can't, well, I can!" The Man is falling for another male in prison and begins to question his sexuality. He begins it to also question his mental stability in Prison, both because of his newfound attraction and because of the amount of killing he is doing, including the gunfight that got him arrested ("Am I losing myself?"). Now that we've brought it back to the 1000 souls he must bring, we can talk about I Never Told You What I Do For a Living. In this song, after taking 999 souls to the Devil, the Man realizes that the Devil (unsurprisingly) tricked him and that the 1000th evil soul the Man's own. He will be sent straight to Hell, while his lover will go to Heaven. He will never see her again, and he realizes that after all the atrocities he has committed, he knows that's how it is best. The Man says, "And it's better off this way, so much better off this way , I can't clean the blood off the sheets in my bed". He can't undo his actions. He doesn't deserve to be with her and she doesn't deserve to have to see the monster he's become. In the last line of the album, "And we're all dead, now", the Man has comes to terms with the fact that he, as well as the 999 people he has killed, are dead, and shall never walk the Earth ever again. They are no more, their stories are over.

The whole concept of the album is kind of a retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice where the main character is a hitman whose wife dies in a gunfight. In order to bring her back, he makes a deal with the devil to bring him the souls of 1000 evil men and in the end, he finds out he's the last one. I interpret "I Never Told you What I Do for a Living" as the main character saying his goodbyes to the wife bc he knows he has to sacrifice himself to bring her back. He's essentially confessing his sins to her. In the end there's this cathartic scream of " I can't get the blood off the sheets in my bed" which I interpret as the speaker finally breaking down as he reckons with his guilty conscious over all the people he's killed. That's just how I see it though!

YAASSS!!! Someone who appreciates the music for the MUSIC!!! Ray Toro is definitely one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. I've never heard his name mentioned in conversations about talented guitarists. What he did(and still does) was so amazing, and really it's one of the most obvious elements that carried the band. Also the drums. Everyone hates on Bob(and I don't actually remember if he recorded on this album- but I think he did... ) but he really did contribute so much to the band's sound. MCR wouldn't have been the same without his drum skills. Thanks for having an awesome- I mean- a Brad taste in music, Brad:)

It's about his grandma, her death inspired the album. Helena was about her. She was the "she" in Welcome to the Black Parade. She was a big supporter of the band. She bought them a van when they started and bought Gerard his first guitar. She was a big artisic influence for the Way brothers. Also, Danger Days or other P!at stuff. So about the concept of the album, one thing that a lot of people don't know is that all of their first 3 albums are related in concept. On their first album, essentially there's a couple that are bandits and they get caught up in some shit and the girl ends up dying in a gunfight. Then the devil comes to the guy and tells him that they can be reunited if he takes the lives of 1000 evil men. "Three Cheers" is the story of him taking the lives of those evil men. It starts with the funeral of his partner and then shows him going after all of the people he's supposed to kill (Give Em Hell, Kid, Hang Em High, etc), evading the police (You Know What They Do...), and mourning her death (Ghost of You, Cemetary Drive). Then at the end, he finds out the last name on the list is his own name and he'll be joining her in hell. The Black Parade is more of a thematic followup to this as it deals with him approaching and accepting death. There are callbacks to this story on The Sharpest Lives, Sleep, Mama, and House of Wolves, but it also adds in the sickness/cancer theme and has a lot of reflecting back on the life he's led. The connection is pretty tenuous and The Black Parade works better as a standalone, but the connection is still there. Three Cheers could have done a better job at telling the story, but they were still learning how to make a concept album and the things they learned there directly inspired The Black Parade.

Would love to see a Danger Days video. A lot of what twenty one pilots tries to do MCR nailed. Don't waste your time with their first album. It was a basement recording so they'd have something to sell at shows. Three Cheers really was the first album that got praise for them. The Black Parade is an iconic masterpiece. Danger Days is really solid though. It doesn't tell a story, but there is a theme. A radio station blast from 2019, that a gang of rebels listens to outside of a place called battery city. It really is a great album, with a lot more happy themes. Really need to check it out

I never told you what I do for a living is one of my all time favorites so I was happy you enjoyed it, especially at the hit you in the face parts I love. I have to agree with the whole "it doesn't connect and isn't as lyrically obvious" as black parade but all the songs just hit you so hard. I listened to this during my freshman year when a classmate committed suicide, it was my first experience with suicide and I went to his wake (He was a drummer and in band with us and was such a joker) and when I came home I just went to my room and listened to this album and cried for hours. Unrelated note, I'd love to see you listen to Danger Days just because it is so different from 3 cheers and Black Parade I'd just love to see your opinion on where they went in the next album. Especially since the change in some of the songs felt quite drastic

First of all, great video! I love your reviews and mcr is my favorite band, so it can’t go wrong :)) I didn’t understand the concept of this album either, until after a few listens (and some discussion online). It’s a really good concept album if you look into and analyze the lyrics, but not as clear as, for example, the black parade. Review whatever album you feel like reviewing, but I’ll watch out for one on Bullets
