Slipknot is my favorite metal band. My daughter introduced me to their music about 3 years ago. Their songs have spoken to the abuse we have experienced. This song to me describes those who lie to control and restrain others, which prevents their subjects from pursuing their dreams. Although I am a fan of EVERY single Neo Forte

The meaning of the title and subsequently song itself is depression basically: Corey is addressing depression as an entity of sorts in the lyrics and talking about how it always tries to break him down, thus the process of tearing him apart and making him miserable is what depression is good at; "that's what you do best", it's depression's forte. The Nero part of the title simply refers to the colour black, as in darkness and misery - depression does do what it does best, but it's not a good thing, quite the opposite - thus it's a black forte. That analysis thing you read at the beginning was really off in terms of what the song's about; the band has never had any issue with christians/religion really; they occasionally use some dark/vaguely satanic imagery or references, but it's often just for theatrics and fun, and is also used as a metaphor for other things, like their relationship with the music industry

I feel exactly what Adam feels when he says he loves this song. It it exciting . I love the lines - “that’s what you do best... lie! Because many religious establishments and cults have lied to people to keep them controlled. Every single word speaks to me I am speechless, love it so. Many who have been abused have kept things to themselves for fear and want to explode inside from all they’ve suffered. Slipknot has an excellent way of speaking for people in their music. Much respect.

I was listening to the album and I was at the end of Nero Forte right when you uploaded this haha. About the title, Nero is a mythical villain and a Forte is what someone does best. So basically the title is saying that someone is the best at being a really bad person.

what my initial reaction was is that Nero besides Roman emperor can also be just something really dark. And with Corey's history with depression, I think that's what it is about. Depression taking hold of him and being damn good at it. Slipknot made jabs at religion in the past, but I would not put this song into that category.

Theres another track on this record called "Orphan." The persecution of christans may have been a reference to the persecution that has been done to him as a child and also possibilty directed towards his ex-wife

I know this is like, ultra late and maybe someone commented this already, but Corey Taylor (the singer) got in fact sexually abused as a child. Maybe check out the song "I'm not Jesus" that he did together with Apocalyptica. Another song that deals with sexual child abuse is the song daddy by korn, again the singer actually went through it a s a child (it wasn't his father as the song title might suggest, it was a babysitter or something). The song is the purest ball of emotion i have ever heard and very direct, given that the topic is so dark, the song is honestly very hard to listen to (you will know what i mean when you decide to check it out). But it's also a very important theme, such events can destroy ones live forever and since its such a mood killer, it doesnt get talked about a lot. That's part of what makes that song so important and awesome. Addition: if you consider listening to daddy, there is a lyrics video on yt but the lyrics aren't completely correct, you still get the overall point but i suggest you pull up the lyrics from a different source like genius while listening. If you ever plan to try and sit through the song, that is.

okay so even if it's not the intended message, I _could_ actually easily see this as connected to Christianity? Like, in a "person who suffered religious abuse" kind of way. Maybe it's just 'cause I'm queer and personally know people who have been abused by religious institutions for their queerness, but the whole "you're so traumatic, see through your bullshit" thing can easily be used to describe the way certain religious groups use their religion to justify their hate and abuse. "A home like yours is upside down" would then refer to the church as the "house of God" where they take religious texts about loving your neighbour and turn them *upside down* and make them about hating anyone who's different.

He’s basically singing to the ideals and normalization of using religion as an excuse to hurt people. No disrespect to the uploader or commentors, but I don't like when anyone tries to decipher anything about Slipknot and say "this means this." That's the theme of the band; you don't know who we are or what our songs mean, so it's up to personal interpretation. It's better to say "I think" than "this is what is." Look at "Tortilla Man"; from interviews, the band is having a lot of fun keeping him a secret, just like they did themselves when they where younger.
