I’ve bought my first big bike in the form of a 2002 Kawasaki ER5! Problems with the bike almost immediately, however, means I haven’t actually ridden it properly yet. Until now...

Recently downsized from a CB1100 to an ER-5 and I'm not disappointed. It's obviously a smaller, less powerful bike but it's just so light and manoeuvrable. Great bike.

I’ve been riding one of these for my A2 course. Lovely bike. Since speed limits have been neutered all over the country I’ve spent 99% of the time at 30 or below so when I finally got onto a 40 I could just hear the bike telling me “I’ve been waiting all day for this” and immediately delivering the power that I need.

I love your reaction to the bike's grunt! I learned to ride on an ER5 and I remember that feeling the first time I opened the throttle on a dual carriageway having only ridden 125s, I had a massive grin plastered across my face. 'First big bike' it may be, but as you've discovered, even slow bikes are fast and that old 500 twin is a torquey little motor. Hope you're still enjoying it!

A half-decent ER-5 can be picked up for a song at the moment (March 2020). They're solid and capable. Every home should have one, even if it's only as a bargain-basement second bike. Pleased you're enjoying yourself, M.C..

I started my first lesson on a 125, about halfway through my instructor said 'Seems like you've got the hang of it, I think we'll upscale a bit' and promptly put me on a 650. I was in shock. Idk how it works where you are but (I'm in the Netherlands) I'm getting my A license, but because I'm not yet 24 I'll get code 80 so it'll basically be an A2 until I turn 24. I'm looking for a good bike for an A2 license, would you recommend this?

I've gone from an 90 bhp fz6 to an er5 and you're right. Between 5 and 7 grand the 500 twins concede nothing to 600 fours.

Its a great cumfy mid bike , stick a little handle bar fairing and top box on it and go touring . Kawasaki made a battery fatal error on earlier models by putting the voltage regulator on the very bottom of the bike ,open to all the road crud .....mine went on a trip up to the lakes and it slowly boiled the battery till the bike broke down a fried the electrics . .the later models have it relocated more sensibly

I've tried another bikes but I stay by my ER5 too. 50HP 2 Cylinders is not eqal to 100HP 4 Cylinders. What I mean ER5 is more agressive ar low revs what makes endless fun.

I went from a 125 to a gpz500, which is very similar but just a little more peppy ( its about 10 hp up but its mostly over 7k where it goes.... pretty well) felt like a ROCKET compared to the 125.... brakes let it down until I converted it to twin discs, zzr600 master and added er500 caliper for the other side
