Same here and I grew up eating, sleeping breathing and playing basketball. Now I'm a 41 year old teacher who coach basketball. But this year was the first I've seen full WNBA games.
Let me start off by saying that comparing Clark to MJ is beyond ridiculous! Shannon knows very well that Jordan's inclusion had nothing to do with marketing or fan popularity, it was because the minute he stepped on the court, NO ONE COULD STOP HIM! And despite fans voting him as a starter to the all-star game, he was only named by the league to the 'All NBA Second Team'. His skill set is what translated into viewership simply because he carried an entire team, and people couldn't wait to see what he'd do next. But in fairness to Shannon Sharpe (who is known as a 'straight shooter' in broadcaster circles and by player's throughout the various leagues alike) he admitted to including way to many things he shouldn't have in his argument for Clark. Moving on to the two women on the panel, they appeared to be stumbling all over themselves trying not to offend anyone for Clark not being selected. Besides making comments like "setting Clark up for failure....minimal playing time...and hindering her development". The first woman lead off by actually saying 'Clark need her rest and a break would be good for her since playing all these games". WTF, Ladies I feel your pain, it can't be easy walking that tightrope that women in the industry are mindful of, knowing that one slip could lead to their downfall. Which brings me to Steven A. An admitted bootlicker, who is well aware that unknown to the viewers. He understands the contraints the women are operating under and that is precisely the reason why he doesn't have to worry about getting much push back from them. Hence his insistence on speaking last, you know that old adage; 'He who laughs last, laughs best'. It affords him the opportunity for a 'drop the Mike moment ' and to belittle the opinions of others without interruption. Tell me honestly, how many of you get up in the morning with your first thought being: "How can I make more money for the boss?" By no means is Steven A. know in any circles as a man whose integrity cannot be questioned. Which is why he spends so much time on the air defending it. So why was Clark left off the Olympic team? (Not snubbed) Isn't odd that none of them mentioned the fact that Clark couldn't attend the Olympic teams training camp because she was playing in the NCAA finals. * The player's are evaluated by their performance in camp * Coaches also rate them from scrimmage games played against other international teams. * Versatility, playing styles and chemistry are all factors * How well they play on both sides of the ball offense & defense. * The roll a player forfills and the needs of the team at each position. * Experience of a player, former Olympians and how well someone is playing to date in the league The bottom line that should be made for Clark not being selected before any other argument is simply that 'KATELYN CLARK IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO MAKE THE ROSTER'! The same reason why the two players that currently lead the 'W' in scoring didn't make it. (Clark's teammate Alyia Boston being one of them) Steven A all those other intangibles like Clark's fan base and growing the game have nothing to do with merit. And that is the one thing that every single player should be able to count on being given when they try out for any team! The Olympic games are all about the spirit of competition and we watch because we take pride in our nation. That sir, has nothing to do with the WNBA, Katelyn Clark, market share or growing the game! Why is it so hard to realize that the WNBA is a joke without Clark. No one cared about it before she was drafted. She may not be the best player in the league but she is the most popular and marketable.
