FIRST TEST RIDE: DUCATI SCRAMBLER ICON

Struggling with the extra weight of my Triumph Bonneville T100, I've been considering trading her in for something smaller in weight. My main dilemma- I don't want a cruiser look, and I don't want a sport bike look, so I have few options with an in-between look that weighs 400lbs or lighter. About time I test ride the Ducati Scrambler, then.

Scrambler has hazards lights. Hold the left signal for couple seconds then the hazards turn on. Just remember the Scrambler is Air cooled. It runs heat normally. Glad you enjoyed the Scrambler.

Hi Doodle, this was a very detailed review of the Ducati Scrambler Icon and you were so enjoying the ride to the point that you wished you'd test ridden it before your bonneville but the heat from the exhaust is a real problem (link inserted). I get so much out of your reviews you're an authority on highlighting the good and the bad features, so important to would be purchasers.
@johncourt9580

Hi Doodle, Your enthusiasm for the Scrambler is infectious and the heat problem you highlighted, is easily fixed with an exhaust heat wrap, I just watched the video, which resulted after showing this video, a good result and a great help to Scrambler owners.

Catching up on vids. I can't offer any advice because you're the only one who knows what is "right" for you. If I were in your position though, I'd probably take the year of learning the new weight especially because it's a beautiful nicely sized bike. It's built heavier for freeway travel which again may not be what is needed. You do what's right for you!

I have to say...as a new rider I'm impressed with how relaxed you seem to be on the interstate. I rode for a year before my first interstate ride and the grooves in the road, the speeds and the multi-lane traffic were all a bit disconcerting at first. Interstate riding is still not my preference if I have options. Good luck, and yes....check out the Street Twin. PS: Bring a friend and ride up to TWO in Suches some weekend. You're likely to see hundreds of bikes and if I"m there, we can compare short bikes.

Doodle, have you tried a monster 797, basically the same engine but in a monster body. I had a scrambler for a couple of years and I loved it, the engine is sweet. It is very easy to ride and live in urban and commuter settings. The heat is a little problem, but only when stopped at lights. Finally I had no reliability issues with my scrambler.

Larger bikes like your Bonneville and the Ducati are much happier on the open road than in all that city traffic. I think you might be too. Ride the Bonnie to the mountains and spend some time away from all the traffic. Have your mechanic add some freeplay to the throttle cable to ease the fast response, he can do it while you wait, it should only take a few minutes and if he's a good guy he probably won't charge you. Whatever you choose to do I wish you safe riding and lots of fun and adventures on two wheels, jj.

Hey Doodle, new subscriber with a little advice for you. Yes, the Scrambler is a great bike and you would have a lot of fun on it BUT before you give up on the Bonnie spend more time with it. Learn how to pick it up. Its just like jiu jitsu, its all about the technique. Watch a few of the suggested videos then (with a friend or two around for moral support) actually lay the Bonnie down (gently! ) and pick it up. I think once you have the confidence that you can handle it you'll get back the excitement for the bike that you had when you test rode it. Good luck :)

I have a 2015 Icon and I am at 5'3", definitely burned my legs while riding back from Miami and getting stuck in rush hour traffic. I only had jeans on. Air cooled. Nature of the beast. On long rides, I wear overpants, even in central Florida. The Olympia pants I have are awesome.

Did you end up getting it,? I had an Atomic orange Icon, one of funnest bikes I’ve ever had What pissed me off was it started very weak, and Pandora’s was to busy with Ducati warranty issues apparently to fix it in a reasonable time I traded for a R9T Pure and eventually traded it for a 2105 Bonneville New Church. Which I love

Hello! I know I’m late to the party :) Just bought a 2019 Ducati scrambler “full throttle” as my first bike. It is AWESOME! The 2019 model has gear indicator, ABS, cornering ABS, and hasards has it’s own switch. I can see how heat could be an issue, but my mesh pants are really good at shielding heat. Great beginner bike! Light weight is also a huge bonus, not scared to drop it when walking it. Sure power is a lot as a beginner bike, but with break-in period I have to be smooth as I learn the bike.

take into consideration the maintenance cost of the ducati, if your not going to make a valve adjustment your self than it will be a very expensive. also consider the cost of parts, I know that you should think about dropping the bike but sooner or later we all do mistakes, the parts of the ducati are really expensive. IMO I would just trade your Triumph with the Street Twin, it's lighter and has a very low seat height, partially watercooled and still with that classic look of a standard motorcycle.

Good review on the Duck. I have always thought well of them (I test rode a monster before I bought my first Triumph), but did not buy it mainly due to its maintenance requirements. Unfortunately, there are not that many classically styled motorcycles in your price, weight and displacement range to choose from. I look forward to finding out where you go from here.

While you are still looking, you may want to consider test riding the Suzuki SV650. It is a highly regarded do it all bike that is similar to the Duck you tested, but is water cooled (less heat from the cylinders) and is less expensive to service.

I wonder if you have option to adjust your suspension on your bonny, I suspect it could be that bike is set up for a larger heavier rider. you might consult the manual or dealer about this, but it may be as simple as reducing tire pressure so your ride is less jarring. When I rode a s40 for he first time, I had the same reaction, I thought it felt like riding a bicycle because of the light weight and maneuverability.

Really glad that you're giving the Ducati Scrambler a shot! 😘 You can turn on the hazard for that, just gotta know how to switch it on. Whoo whee that burning leg is for real man, it sucks anytime I have to sit waiting for a traffic light. Really excited to be taking mine up the coast next week! Hopefully, you figure out what you'll do on the bikes. The Bonneville is still really cool looking too, and dealing with a new bike for me is almost like re-learning how to ride. Good luck and ride safe!

Wondering: are there NO after-market exhausts for the Ducati that would route the exhaust away from one's legs?

@aaron.hudacky
@aaron.hudacky 7 лет назад
The Moto Guzzi V7 III Special is another motorcycle you might want to look at, although it is somewhat heavier than your preferred weight range. It is about 420 lbs without fuel and 460 with it's 5.8 gallon tank full, has a 744cc 90 degree air cooled, 52 hp pushrod V-twin, shaft drive, easy valve adjustment that you could easily do yourself every 6,000 miles or so, and retails for about $8500 new. Moto Guzzi's strongest negative is sparse dealer network, so depending where you live, you might have to travel to see one. Used ones are pretty cheap, just stay away from the plastic tank model years (2012 and earlier I think) if you buy used. V7 weight is higher than the Scrambler, but only by about 35lbs without fuel, and the Guzzi carries 2.2 gallons more gas, so you could take less gas to keep it lighter or take the weight penalty and increase range considerably.

Awesome! :D Thanks for watching. I do miss it, but wouldn't go back to less power after tasting more. Triumph and Ducati's have more sensitive throttles, ride smoother, and accelerate a little faster, which I haven't tested that (I ride slow). It's a great bike! Hope you enjoy

It's an air cooled engine so it will burn baby burn your legs in hot weather (cold weather too if you're sitting in traffic long). It just will. If I were buying a Honda Grom or a Kawasaki Z125 (both with 125cc engines) then I would not mind it being air cooled, but a larger displacements - liquid cooled all the way. Have you tried a 2017 Triumph Street Twin?

One of my wife's bikes is a 620 Multistrada. Also air cooled like the Scrambler. We put an oil cooler on the bike and that has helped to cool the bike down BUT you still have to be moving for the bike to cool. Not sure if that's an option for the Scrambler. One other thing to note is that this bike has timing belts. Ducati recommends changing them every 2 years EVEN is you don't ride a lot. If you do this at a dealership its will be big $$$. My wife has two BMWs and they are cheaper to maintain than the Duc. IF I were you ID consider getting a liquid cooled bike. From what I can gather about you, you might like a Honda Hornet (CB600F). Upright position, light, air cooled, around 100 HP, easy to ride and Honda reliability. I have one and it is a fun bike an my wife likes it too. Good luck.

Ducati rides similar to T100, weighs 95lbs lighter but constantly buzzes at speed, and consistently fries your inner legs...comfort first, style second. You can overcome the weight diff with experience, but the ducati will ALWAYS; 1.making you legs painful(BURNING you) 2. Buzz at cruising speed which equals numbs hands, slower reaction times, and increased rider fatigue.

Look at the maintenance schedule and the price, that should scare you away from the Ducati. BTW I just checked my FZ 07-40mph in first not 15.

ok so my bro has one of these and all the vibrations are from emitions controle stuff. for free by deleting the charcoal canister the bike is a million times smoother. then an exhaust and a rexxer tune change the game!

Using a Scrambler Urban Enduro, took a 90 mile ride from Chicago to Milwaukee, it gets uncomfortable due to the amount of wind you catch

The Scrambler obviously needs a thigh temperature gauge... The markings should reflect lukewarm ... toasty...sauteed ... baked ...broiled... and... fall off the bone well done. :^)

Denis Rousseau , definitely a low seat-height stable platform, significantly less expensive than T100 (especially used), and still smooth with plenty of power.

A lot of people are trying to justify heavy bikes here.. I cannot justify a heavy bike.. I ride a 400 pound Yamaha r6, and I wouldn't want anything heavier

the Kawasaki 650 Vulcan S is worthy of a test ride doodle. the new Honda rebel 500 might be good, Yamaha has a 650 star that is a cruiser, long and low. too much power/weight with most of the bigger bikes.

If on a test ride you see issues then I think I'd pass on the bike. You shouldn't have to redesign the poor design that Ducati did. Does it vibrate more than your t100? Weight is concern but I suspect seat height is also a player. Test drive a Yamaha fz07 and see if the seat height works for you. Under 400 lbs wet. Another bike you should try out is a Suzuki sv650. About 434 wet and under 31 seat height. Plenty of power and fun to ride. Remember that RIDING the bike is just as important as how it looks. For me it's more important. If I'm not enjoying the bike but it looks good then I'm not owning it. I'd rather have a type of bike that I RIDE over just looking at it. Also 33 repair in 4 years vs 11-14 is a major difference. Take your time. I can tell you that I've never owned a bike that cooked my legs while stopped. My Vstrom is cool either while sitting or riding. Be safe! Bill

There are pluses and minuses to light bikes as well, especially on the highway. Your Bonnie is about what... 150 lbs heavier than your S40? Can you not feel a difference in stability at highway speeds? That the Bonnie feels more planted and less affected by wind and turbulence? Since you will always have to travel to those mountains on the highway, I think you may regret loosing your Bonnie. But that's just my 2 cents.

Some cogent thoughts! There are always trade-offs in motorcycle choice, as no bike is perfect for every situation.

B.S. You should keep the Bonnie and save your money and upgrade the exhaust, air box, wheels on it and you'll loose 50-100 lbs and you'll have the Iconic bike that will be timeless, the Ducati Scrambler will be discontinued in a few years.... just saying.
