What's funny about that episode is that the first time I saw it I was going, "Who the fuck is this lady?". Turns out I missed this episode where the introduce her. The beauty of owning all ten seasons though is that you can watch every episode. And the beauty of haven not seen Stargate in at least 6 years is that you FORGET a ton of episodes, so you watch these clips and get super excited because a forgotten episode might as well be a brand new episode of SG1.

Use the Manual over-ride. It's not working......Wait! It's a manual over-ride! Why is he on the computer? Shouldn't it be Manual????? Now if he opened a big box and started shutting off relays or breakers then that would be a real manual override! The Iris should be active open. Which means it needs power to stay open! Security vs convenience is an art. What if an SG team returns back home and while en route there's a power outage. "like bugs on a windshield" ~ O'Neill. Many instances irl where automatic doors go open on power outage, to not trap people. You could have a security delay on a few batteries/backup generators, but it would be tied to average travel time, which grants the exact same advantage to a person escaping. Also, people spilling coffee or a random bug. In critical systems like this, it's often made simple in design, but intentionally "dumb" (difficult) to accidentally make it fail, extra backdoors and fancy smartphone control apps in the design can grant more reliable control, but simultaneously allows more points of failure/hacks. You can see the dilemma surely. There's also the "what ifs", what if earth is on the verge of destruction, power can be lacking, and the stargate instantly becomes the defacto best evacuation option. In such extreme measures, counting for the lights to still be on is rather wishfull thinking. Especially with nukes who emit EMP which fries electronics nonetheless. Then the iris is closed, and u can enjoy ur last moments, thinking about that Darwin award u won before total human extinction.

„manual override“ proceeds to type something into a computer...
@shadenox8164
@shadenox8164 Год назад
Yes, manual overrides are where you take control away from an automated system. So even if you're still using the computer if you are taking control from an automated system, that is a manual override. There's also the more specific manual analog override, the analog part of the name specifies the override in question is something physical rather than digital and that's probably what you're thinking of.
@TheVergile
@TheVergile Год назад
@@shadenox8164 in principle thats correct, but it makes no sense in this situation. If your interface is non-responsive to input a manual override that is done through the same interface is utterly useless and no one would ever design a system this way. This whole thing is a Computer interacting with a physical system (the stargate). Somewhere there are relays the computer controls which then activate power delivery to the gate and control the motors that move the ring and the iris-shield, etc. In this situation a manual override would obviously not be to type stuff into the non-responsive computer but to manually trip said relays. Whatever you type into the computer at that point is just another automation. And if the system is compromised exchanging one automation for another is probably not gonna help. Manual digital overrides are useless word constructs. Since they are indistinguishable from any other human input. Maybe you could argue they are inputs made with a higher admin authority. But if the chief of an installation talks about using “THE” override then its obviosuly gonna be a big box of breakers. Because otherwise you are implyinfg that the digital overrides are the only ones you have. Which would be the most back-asswards way to design anything.

If the gate can't operate when it's buried they should've had a completely manual (no computers) system to drop a blocker into the gate. They have the Iris, but some purely gravity assisted concrete block dropping in from the back to obstruct the gate would make anything like this impossible.

@backupplan6058

Thanks to the thumbnail image it’s clear those gate address are all wrong. Few use the point of origin of earth as the 7th symbol which really isn’t needed as the hope it you know what’s the point of origin is or is automatically added when dialling. Also if it truly uses points in space then how can you have point of origin twice in the same address.
@eboskie1
@eboskie1 5 лет назад
If think of it as 6+1 there is no reason you couldn't use the same symbol for the 7th slot as any of the others. They only have so many symbols to work with and there are many many gates so why wouldn't they be able to use whatever symbol is for the point of origin as the 7th symbol as well as in any other slot at the same time. example - code 1234567 and code 1234577 would lead you to 2 different places. In this example if you are not able to use the number 7 in the first 6 slots you are limiting the amount of addresses you can assign. I also see an example of this in the clip. From the clip it would be 1237567... which is a perfectly legit address. So you do not have a point of origin twice in the same address only 1 the 7th symbol... you are just reusing symbols for sake of addressing space.
@backupplan6058
@backupplan6058 5 лет назад
eboskie1 first that’s not how the gates have been demonstrated and explained how they work. It’s 6 spacial points that triangulate with a point of origin, how it became in the SG1 (not using the film interpretation) every gate has a main set of 37 matching symbols that are the same to every gate within that galaxy but the 38th is a unique symbol to that planet, it’s how they are able after Abydos to be able to get back so easy, they now know what the earth address is so it’s only a matter of identifying which new symbol is on the gate that’s the point of origin. There are a few cases where the gates did not have a position which was equivalent to its space position but this was explained as modified gates which likely during its periodic updates encrypts a secondary position in the database in the event one of those gates is dialled.

I just noticed a minor mistake. Hammond says "abort the countdown" but we were not yet told the salf-destruct was active. It's likely a mistake introduced in editing. They probably cut a short bit or a voice over where it's stated the self-destruct was activated for better pacing of the scene.

There is a question on my mind that had me curious if it would work because it could have saved them a lot of trouble. ok from what I know the stargate doesn't work if there is something in front of it, but what about something inside of it. I ask because the gate was buried in the ground for ages and couldn't be dialed into. So couldn't they have had a block of something slide into the gate to stop the dilation from even activating or would the gate simply destroyed what was inside it?
@samsonguy10k
@samsonguy10k 4 года назад
For one, the stargate works fine if there is something in front of it. That's how the iris performs. It is so close to the event horizon that it just doesn't make a whirlpool effect. Anything further away from that distance, and the whirlpool forms, vaporizing everything it touches, as was seen in this episode much earlier. But if there is something completely obscuring the opening, such as a ton of dirt or the iris moved back to where the event horizon forms, then it does not activate. So, yes, they could build something like a piston that would block it, but it would have to be in the aperture just right, and quite possibly very, very heavy. Both very dangerous and not fail-proof ingredients. But they did come up with actual manual overrides later, learning from what others had done, including Plague Witch. That's part of what made this series good, was they acknowledged a lot of loopholes that enemies had taken advantage of, and corrected them within the storyline. But, every now and then a scifi tale(Star Trek included) needs the enemy to actually win and get what they want, to make the challenge bigger the next time they meet.
@chasemakes
@chasemakes 4 года назад
@@samsonguy10k Yes, I agree. I just like to think about how funny it would be if they made a piston that did enter into the stargate, but then the power fails so they just look at each other and goes, "whose ideas was this again?"

@DavidSmith-fs5qj 2 года назад
I think that fans of a show are prepared to accept plotholes and gaps in logic, as long as it is entertaining. One example(and there are so many), would be the episode 1969, in which SG-1 find themselves back in 1969, and have to find their own way home. They ended back in 1969 because of a solar flar which hit the gate as they went through. So, they manage to find a large telescope, which is left totally unstaffed, so they can plot the next solar flares. Then, when they manage to find the Stargate, it is again, totally ungarded, that is, until, the moment they are about to go through, guards appear, and fire shots at them. fortunately, as they go through the gate, the bullets veer off in another direction, thereby missing them, so convenient.
