@@sam.alexander.reviews the only time i use my steam deck is when im at home but when im not at home i bring my Nintendo Switch oled with me because the battery on the switch oled last longer than the steam deck battery
Another quick recommendation: get a sideways 90° angled USB cable or adapter. Something that you can more easily plug into your deck while it's in the case so you can charge y when it's not in use.
@@Fernando-ek8jp Yeah, I got one of those right angle magnetic plug ins but the problem is if you disconnect everything except the magnetic plug, the Steam Deck still thinks you have a charger cable plugged in and gives you that message on desktop mode. Not sure if it makes any real difference but yeah
Another tip is when you format your new SD card, don't use the built in format option in game mode. Manually format your SD card in desktop mode using the included KDE Partition Manager in the start menu. This will increase the SD downloading speed significantly for most users.
Formatted mine with the built in format option in game mode and really haven't had a complaint about download speed. I have the base model deck with no mods so the SD card is my primary storage for my game installs.
I’m a playstation guys since a lil kid, now I’m 36 and having PS5. Wife just bought me steam deck, could you pls elaborate more what are you trying to advise here, I dont quite understand 😬
@@nastyline9693don’t worry too much about it, he’s talking about optimizing download speeds if you have an sd card to put in the steam deck. You don’t really have to worry about that. If you want extra storage just put the sd card inside and it will get formatted (which basically gets the sd card ready for you to put games on it). But yeah if you don’t need more storage than you don’t have to worry about it.
@@nastyline9693 Ay mate I'm a playstation guy too, thinking about getting one of these steam decks for work. I literally don't know anything about PC stuff and haven't used one since about 1999 lol, how u finding the steam deck? Is it easy to use for someone like me????
@@bricktop.If you stick to Verified games it's a breeze. You can do more advanced stuff and very complex things as it can do anything any other PC can do, but you don't have to
Just a protip: if you have the 512GB version do not put a screen protector on it because it has the etched glass you. Will turn the screen into a mirror...
Comment on the external battery bank: Look up the output of the battery, most low price ones, even if they're of good quality and have good capacity, top off at 5V and 2-3amps for a total of 10-15watts of output. That is more than fine for a phone even while under heavy use, but the steam Deck does need at least a 20watt (so 5volts, 4amps) charger to be able to charge while in use, otherwise it might actually still drain even while charging if you're using it to game. Basically any battery bank will work if the steam deck is off or sleeping though, so you could still use pretty much any old external battery you have lying around to give it a bit of extra juice between play sessions if you don't have an outlet handy.
Want to add another note to this: if you plan on flying most airlines have a limit of about 27000 mah, you can bring 2 20000 mah batteries while flying
@@MattWiles love my base model. I purchased a matte-film type screen protector and a 512 SD card and really don't feel like I'm missing out on anything the pricier models offer.
@@MattWilesbase model is definitely the winner in terms of bang for a buck.. i mean, it has the same perfomance in terms of fps and everything. The only difference is the storage which can be expanded with a sd card and i watched a test that checked the loading times for gamss with the sd card, the ssd of the mid and high tier models and the mmc storage of the base model without the sd card and i kid you not, the ssd was the slowest in most cases.. the sd card loading times were almost always 2,3 seconds faster and the mmc storage also.. the only difference where the ssd was faster was booting up the steam deck where it was like 3 seconds faster. So yeah, definitely go for the base model. I dont like the high tier screen, the colors look faded and not as sharp so for me the "anti glare" screen is definitely a negative thing on top of being way pricier
@@MattWiles whats the difference when using a premium anti glare screen protector on top? i mean i would protect the matte screen too, so i guess the many many content creators that swear by the base model and an even faster 1-2TB SSD upgrade cant be wrong about the matte screen protectors, right?
Fun fact. The ugreen or anker usb-c dongles both fit well in the included pouch and therefore in the cutout on the carrying case. As a bonus, ax the included charger and just get any ugreen or anker 100w multi port, and then you can charge your other stuff in addition to the deck.
Should add that if you have the anti glare model steam deck make sure you get anti glare screen protector as well. Cause normal ones will just add back reflections
I never watched you until now but you've earned my sub, you literally went straight to the point at the beginning and I really like that. As for the Steam Deck, I sold my Series S because of it, I love the Deck!!!
I found your video shortly after I bought my steamdeck to find out some additional information about it and there was one thing you mentioned that I didn't know you could do easily anyway and that's installing plug-ins thanks for the info. I think the steamdeck is the best handheld around I didn't think anything would beat the switch boy I was proven wrong 😅
I sold my Switch as I only used it for BOTW. I've always been a PC gamer and I have soooooo many games. I only use my desktop for racing sims now, everything else is on my Deck. I'll throw it up on the TV and play with the Switch pro con. Awesome device.
I've been loving my Steam Deck. Fallen Order runs great on it. It was a little annoying to get started, but that was due to EAs interface. Otherwise, the game itself is great.😊
Appreciate the video. I just ordered the 512gb Steam Deck. Will order a 1TB SD card a few days before it arrives. I figure 1.5 TB of total storage should be enough seeing as I still play my Switch and 3DS. I won't be putting on a screen protector. Already have a good external battery pack. Already have a HDMI USB dongle. Have plenty of controllers. Even have the Steam controller. Might look for a good case/skin just for comfort. First thing I'm going to do after all of that is see about add Game Pass to my Steam Deck.
The biggest potential issue I've found with "Unsupported" games is not issues with playing the game, itself, but that some of them will not properly sync your save files with the cloud, so you can't really alternate between playing it on your PC and Deck.
Hey Sam, late comment but with Black Ops 3, if you only play the zombies you can go to properties and dlc and remove the campaign and multiplayer to save up storage as B03 is already a beefy game with it's storage size
Also, if you have an older model LCD with a lower tier wifi chip, what you can do to speed up its downloads is by enabling "limit download speed" and enter a high number or the max speed your internet will allow. Itll make downloads significantly faster.
My Steamdeck is coming Friday or Saturday. I have Amazon Vine so ordered a case, screen protector, and stand which were all free. Can't wait for it to arrive.
Great video! man. These are the things I would do with my Steam Deck myself. Loving you high quality videos. I will definitely looking to talk about this myself Lol.
I have OLED 1TB and I ain't disappointed. I love it, it's a toy and the tool at the same time. Edit: Back to the video, you should at least mention desktop mode, it's literally a game changer when it comes to handhelds. (I bet you assumed people know about it, but if someone has no clue what SD is, it could actually interest them)
I ordered the steam deck (baseline) 1tb memory card and screen protector at once. The steam deck arrived first and no way I’ll use it until the 1tb and screen protector arrives. I can jam on some games on my gaming laptop no rush! Eventually I’ll be getting a sleeve protector, and upgrade the 64 of memory down the line! 💪
Received my steam deck and barely started setting it up, im overwhelmed. I also got a Rick and Morty Vinyl skin, screen protector and a rugged case, along with a case coverto protect the screen even further...i dunno which game to start with first...
Someone else said that too. It's not necessary. Here was my response there: Considering a2 spec is above the Steam Deck SD slot capabilities, there would be next to no difference, if any at all. It only supports up to roughly 100mb/s and that's the capabilities of a1. A2 would only really benefit you in random read/write which doesn't help much at all with games as they are mostly sequential reads. UHS-1 Class 10 is really all you need to worry about for max SD card performance in Steam Deck
Even if a game is listed as “unsupported” doesn’t actually mean it won’t work. I already owners a few games listed as “unsupported” and they fun just fine.
Screen protector may come with a caveat if you got the 1TB model that has a matte anti glare screen finish. Putting a regular screen protector on it will mess with the anti glare. Heard even a anti glare protector affects the visual.
actually i disagree abo8t the charger see with not many know it is great getting the 45w charger especially if your going to use it while its charging let me explain. as your using the system, the steam deck will always use more power then when you charge it so if you charge is slowly, your steam deck isn't going to charge at all, say your battery is at 30% and you have it slowly charging you got to 31% charge, if you're playing an intensive game or any game at all you will notice that 31% will drop to 30% and it may fluctuate remember always have more power coming in then when it being used to counter the discharging affects
They should build newer models with external batteries so you don't have down time hell they could sell different models with extra batteries and battery charger that would be cool.
screen protector on the 500gb model MUST be matte, otherwise you just paid the extra money for no reason. I threw out my glass screen protectors because they were glossy finished. Get the Spiggen case with the lanyard, will stop you dropping it, more-so than bumping.
Steam Deck games are everywhere! :D I knew this day would come, I get to order a Steam Deck. But would I get in trouble for ordering a Steam Deck with my account without playing games on my computer?
I wish I would’ve got the steam deck instead of getting a Nintendo switch oled. I really don’t know why I did but I’m gonna make up for it by getting a steam deck
100% put a screen protector on, 100% put a case on, 100% charge it to 100%, do all those things before you even turn the deck on for the first time and you'll never get a single scratch on it. Source: i do this with everything i get, nothing i own from new has ever gotten a scratch on it.
i really do not recommend using a screen protector with the 512gb version it looks horrible with the non reflecting screen. I tried two different brands one had a more frosted texture but it lead to heavy washing effect with the colors and the other clear one just gave a lot of reflections which made the non reflecting screen pointless.
I've been using a screen protector since day 1 on my 512 and it looks fine. Yes, it's a little annoying the few times I've used this thing under direct sunlight (almost never because I usually play in-doors or in my car). But at least glare goes away when you move around or change position. Scratches don't. No matter what excuses you give, at the end of the day, your excuses aren't going to protect my screen from being scratched. If I was confident enough to open up the Deck and install a 512 nvme drive, I would have bought the 64gb model and upgraded it myself. But many of us are NOT confident to even open up the Deck, let alone remove and install parts of it. Even the confident people doing this are breaking their SD cards because they forgot to remove it. So we buy 512 gb and slap a screen protector on it. All my other handheld devices have scratched up screens and I've regretted not using screen protectors just because I didn't want to spend money on them.
@@Goldie_Roger yes you are correct but for all the people who like to switch out parts you can order the non reflecting screen on ifixit like every replacement part for the deck The plans for it are open available i use the jsaux backplate with the awesome long back buttons.. i think when replacement parts are available and there is a bag for it its not a big deal to get some scatches.. at least for me. Everyone is different in this regard i am not a big fan to put a handheld in all kind of cases and screen protectors it makes the steam deck much bigger
@@Goldie_RogerI understand you need to use a screen protector. As you stated, your other devices have scratches on them. But if you’re like me it would only make the quality of your deck worse. I’ve had a switch for years with no scratches or screen protectors. Same as my current phone. I’m not wasting the anti glare on my new 512gb deck model by putting a screen protector on it. The degrade in image quality just isn’t worth it FOR ME. But for others it might be if they’re more prone to damaging their devices.
You should write a proper script next time. First you recommend a 25W Charger just to turn around and say it would be a bad idea because it would turn the battery on off constantly. Why not just dont recommend the 25W charger alltogether then and just mention the risk? Would reduce the possibility of people, especially not native speakers like me, getting it wrong.
When you say have games to play offline, apparently you need an internet connection even for single player games, there's lots of people on YT talking sbout this and how terrible it is. One example is trying to use it on a flight, which apparently you cant. Havebt got one myself but ive read a lot about this
I was debating whether or not I need a screen protector since the screen itself is glass. Doesn't glass scratch a lot less than plastic? I have the 64gb model btw.
