Alan Jackson has always been one of the favorite country singers., and he writes all of his own songs. This song reminds me of the way I grew up in the south. I know the reason this song was so popular. I lived it. I grew up driving my grandfather's old John Boat and his old green pickup truck. I remember being very young behind the wheel of that truck. Probably 7. That's the beauty of growing up in the country. Life is filled with experiences with your family. We all spent a lot of time with each other. We depended on each other. We were all we had. I wouldn't trade the experiences I had with my grandfather for anything. He was a WW2 vet. Retired by the time I came along. We spent every day going on adventures. The man literally taught me everything I know. He could do about anything. Only now that I'm older and I realize I can do almost everything I need to do and fix anything around the house because of him and what he taught me. I have a lot of friends that have to call and pay people because they didn't have someone in their life like him. I was so blessed to have him. Loosing him is still the biggest void I have in my life. He was just irreplaceable.
This will always remind me of my grandpa. He taught me ro drive young, built race cars, dune buggy's etc... Lots of adventures behind a wheel. Here i sit in an 18 wheeler. Loving every minute 😊
I heard this song for the first time awhile back and it brought me to tears. Now I have a pick up I bought from my dad due to the sentimental value it has to me. He bought it in 1996 and I learnt to drive in it and it's some of my best memories of my father who passed away late 2019.
My dad taught me and my sisters how to drive in his jeep in the mountains and he used to tell me “slow down Mario” since we lost him in October this song makes me cry every time I hear it
Those 'feelings' he mentions are so true and real. I was riding,(and crashing) mini bikes at 8. Had to help Dad repair more than one fence. Driving tractor in a vinyard at 10. Just a small FordN9, but at that age, the power made me King-O-The- Road! Such a shame young ones today don't get that experience.

This song makes me cry every single time I hear it. Sitting on my Dad's lap and "driving" when I was a toddler is one of my best and most favorite memories of my Dad.
In the country, Daddy's have kids out on back roads learning to drive at 10 or 12 years old & driving tractors before that. LOL As for Alan? His writing & his laid back style are like a warm blanket. Everything about his screams the simple life filled with family, love & homespun living. Love the photo of him in the boat with his dad at the end of the video. I love when that beat kicks in in the beginning. It's small and simple, but sooo good and I anticipate it in my soul when I start to listen to this song. This is one of my best friend's favorite songs. He told me it reminds him of his dad, who passed away in a house fire when he was a little kid. His dad used to take him fishing and stuff. Though I can relate to the experiences within the lyrics, myself, that's not what I think about while enjoying this song. I just simply love the sound, and the sentiment of the lyrics/message.

Now it is my oldest Grandchild that is ready to learn to drive ( She wants to learn how to drive a stick ) . With Mr. Jackson the older you get the more his song get to you. I learnt to drive with a three on the tree Grandpa's old truck such great memories of my youth and now with grandkids like Alan I hope my kids and grandkids look back at the good times we had and the little things like this. I played this song at my Dad's funeral with tears in my eyes. I still tear up even today at 56 cause all the memories come back I miss him so much he was best friend and mentor.
When Alan Jackson's father passed away, he wanted to write a song to honor him. As he tried to come up with deep things to say about the man, all he could think of was the good times he had with him. Since Alan's father was a mechanic, with Alan becoming a gear head himself, those good times came when his father trusted his young son to drive something. All of us fellow gear heads can relate. Anyway, he later did write the deep tribute that he originally intended to write. It's called "A Small Town Southern Man"
100% pure nostalgia! I grew up on a farm in Florida, cow pastures and orange groves. I learned to drive the farm tractor as soon as I could push the clutch all the way down. And the farm pickup truck as soon as I could see over the steering wheel. Sweet memories with my Granddad!

My gosh, I am 70. I grew up driving my dads boat and know the feeling. We called the boat Hubs tub. Believe it or not, I learned to drive with an old 1962 Ford truck on a dirt road going to the town dump. Such memories... Hopefully my sons remember us together the same way.
I learned to drive on my uncles farm when I was 9. Driving the tractor so the guys could load up the hay bales. Then my older brother taught me ride a dirt bike. Then my first car was a rusted up Datsun with a manual choke and a stick. I was so proud every time I got behind a wheel.
I've always enjoyed this song a lot for my own memories. Growing up country, learning to drive a tractor at 9 or 10, "graduating" to a hay or grain truck then a combine was just how boys were expected to help around the farm/ranch. At 14 we could legally drive grain or corn trucks on those country roads from the fields to the grain elevator in town, then back again for another load. Simple pleasures and memories now of enjoying a cold drink out of the water can on the pickup tailgate to cut the dust from your throat as mom brings out sandwiches, then turn on the combine lights and keep working until it's all cut. Alan has a way to put that seed in my mind and I take it from there!

I grew up on a ranch/ farm, I learned to drive tractors before I could ride a bike. The only time I rode a bike was when I would go to school. When I was 8 my grandpa gave me a 57 Chevy truck. I kept that truck until I was 20, sold it to pay for my first wedding, should have kept the truck.
My daddy let me drive his 1967 Plymouth around an old dirt road on Bearwallow Mountain. Hes been gone a year now so this song takes me back. I totally get it.

This song was practically me! I remember being about 09 to 10 years old and my grandpa teaching me how to drive a 1949 to 1952 John Deere tractor and those memories of him teach me how to do it has been with me all my life and I’m almost 37 now whenever I hear one of those tractors, it takes me back in time! Unfortunately, don’t hear songs like this on the radio anymore! If you do, it’s rare! Unfortunately, country music these days is the same old crap!
With me it was not driving a boat; rather, it was swimming in the river, climbing tall pines, and hunting with my own rifle in the forest by myself. In a word, it is independence for the child that gives him/her confidence later as an adult. As a parent I now realize how difficult this process is--to release the child to grow.

The 2nd verse takes a twist like a pretzel, from the ideal presented in the 1st verse. It brings tears to some people that can relate to its message.
The road I live on I remember it used to be a one lane dirt road and you better pray you didn’t meet anyone because it was only big enough for one vehicle and nowhere to turn around. Now it’s a paved two lane. I mention that because we used to drive vehicles/F-100 up and down this road when we were really young.
My dad taught me how to work on engines back in the day. I loved it. Now you have to have special degrees to work on cars because of all the computers and shit. But give me a car made between 60 and 80, I could maintain that car forever. Now you have to take it to a garage or have special training and equipment which is only available to trained individuals. Planned obsolescence at its best ya'll.
I learned how to drive in my pawpaw's yellow 1952 Chevrolet Belair, turned me loose in a cow pasture and it was the greatest feeling. He later gave me the old Chevy and it was my first car in high school.
His 3 girls that you saw are all grown up now. The one lost her husband a few years back to an accident. Alan has a degenerative nerve condition known as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. He said it was inherited from his father. It causes him to stumble and lose his balance.
My best friend was going to see Alan perform for the first time around his birthday, but that's when Alan's son-in-law passed, and the concert got canceled.
I personally think "Like Red on a Rose" and "Little Man" are a couple of great songs that are under-appreciated. "Like Red on a Rose" has a different sound and feel than what he usually does. And I think Allison Krause helped him produce it.

To me, the song isn't about driving. It's about a kid spending time with his dad, and dad helping his kids gain self-confidence on the way to adulthood.
My dad used to take me on his Kayak and Canoe as a kid and it an experience next to nothing else. It's so fun and relaxing even if paddling is a workout. If your fit or used it, it isn't You guys have got to try it. If you get near the land you'll see all kinds of bugs, fish, weird plants and can even find little secret land areas and a lot of other stuff. It doesn't just have to be a boring floating around the lake u can explore while boating.

Alan is true blue country and humble and very much a family man. A lot of his music is about his life. This song reminds me of my husband and his daddy. His daddy had him driving very young whether it be be dirt bikes, go carts, four wheelers and cars.

My husband is the biggest Alan fan... probably 10 or 11 yrs ago.. my oldest son asked us to go to the DE state Fair to see Alan....I've been born and raised at the Delaware State Fair... First concert I truly remember is Charley Pride... I was 5.. Alan Jackson put on an amazing concert that night...... here's my thing though.. we paid $60 a ticket at the Fair.. we saw him 2 yrs later at the Baltimore Arena..no lie.. $600 a ticket...
This song is my story, I grew up in a rural area where we all drove cars, trucks, tractors and heavy equipment at an early age. My 2 youngest are 15 & 17 year old daughters and they too have been driving the same kind of things for years. My 15 year old daughter drove a Caterpillar dump truck at age 11, and my 17 year old daughter was teaching adults how to drive a manual shift transmission when she was 12 years old. It was a lot of fun for me back then, and I'm enjoying seeing them learn the way I did. It does make me feel a little sad for folks who didn't get those kinds of opportunities.

Someone needs to take you out crawdaddin' or noodlin' catfish! I was raised in Oklahoma and now live in upstate NY, and have a friend from Manhattan that never owned a car and got his driver's license when he was in his early 30s. There is nothing in my being that can make me imagine not owning a vehicle of some sort.
