Bob was saying the 'N' word with respect. He was telling a tale. A true tale. Don't be offended. He wasn't singing that word with any hate.

Well, it's a character saying it anyway. People seem to think all songs are autobiography and singing about something bad is somehow endorsing it.

Dylan has now been writing and recording for 60 plus years. He is a Nobel Prize winner and has changed the course of musical history forever. His writing has touched on every imaginable subject in every imaginable way and style. A true genius and artist. If you like poetic songs of injustice try the original audio recording of “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” another true story.

And yet in 2004 or 05, I was given such a hard time by the English department at my university and had to defend my choice to write about Bob Dylan, saying “you need to prove he’s a poet” (and meanwhile the girl writing about Buffy the Vampire Slayer gets no pushback) and then as I’m doing that, this Harvard big deal Christopher Ricks writes a book interpreting Bob Dylan’s lyrics and that is the only reason they agreed to let me write about him. I wonder what those same people thought when he won the Nobel prize for poetry. Also: “We want to pin this triple murder on him/he ain’t no gentleman jim” meaning that Hurricane is not the type to move to the side when a white person is walking past, he’s not going to bow and scrape.

I had the same experience in college in 1975 (the year he released Hurricane) I wanted to write about Dylan in a poetry course and I had to share several books from the time written about Dylan to convince the professor he qualified. With all he has done he still doesn’t get the respect he deserves. BTW, Gentlemen Jim Corbett was a boxer who was given credit for bringing civility to boxing. It doesn’t change the validity of your statement but, it’s a historical fact.

This song is the one time Dylan uses the n-word anywhere in the thousands of hours he's been recorded, and he has the black folks say it. Dylan is all about the power of words. Don't forget, Dylan was invited to sing at the I Have A Dream Speech in Washington. Sang two songs before MLK spoke immortality into a microphone. Bob traveled with voter registration buses into the deep south. There's a youtube video of him singing Only A Pawn In Their Game to black sharecroppers that will blow your mind. Following Dylan is a red pill, Shon.

If you don't know that injustices just like this one sill happen today you are either willfully ignorant or just not much of a critical thinker. As for the other half of your comment "Quit pretending like everyone are racial victims." There are quite a few things to say but ill just point out that nobody suggested that everyone was was anything. You made that up to satisfy your thirst to invalidate the experience of others . For the future any tine you find yourself saying "every" or "all" when speaking about people you should pause because there is a good chance you're making a generalization that is fraught with error.

Bob Dylan was a heavily involved civil rights activists who fought the injustices by the American court system, a majority of his songs were events that really happened backed by facts, and this song, by Bob Dylan is the most powerful songs he ever did about the civil rights erra he is a legendary songwriter/singer because he was a white man who risked his reputation and public image to fight for the rights of people who's voices were being muffled by a corrupt system so he used his voice and influence to reach the ears of millions in hopes to help better and bring together a society that was broken by a strong racial divide, Bob Dylan was a hero, he had everything at risk by publishing and singing this song at the height of the civil rights movement and he didn't care he was willing to write music as a way to throw punches at the system knowing what he stood to lose but stood firm in his fight for civil rights

My appreciation of this song goes way back to when it was first released, and it is without question the most intense piece of music he's ever created, both musically and lyrically. And that's saying a lot, because the poet laureate is an American treasure who has given us more cultural wealth than any individual artist. I was fortunate to see him for the first time in concert 2 days ago. I highly recommend that everybody look up his paintings and other artwork, which are also full of the type of Americana iconography that he presents in so much of his music.

It’s gotta be an early performance, the lyrics different from the album like Desolation Row in the basement tapes. BTW this is a true story. See the movie Hurricane. It’s all true. I forget who played Hurricane, I think Denzel? I could be wrong. What Dylan did, tried to do, did for Rueben Carter by writing this song was beautiful. He calls the song Hurricane because that was Carter’s boxing name, Reuben “Hurricane” Carter. I’ll grab you the wikipedia link. And yes, he was about to fight the title bout for the middleweight championship. In Patterson, there has always been speculation that the cops, D.A., Bradley, someone, was making money from his incarceration and his not fighting. So here’s the link for the facts: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubin_Carter

The talented violinist who graced the "Hurricane" ballad with her soaring melodies is Scarlet Rivera. Her distinctive style, blending rock and classical influences, added a powerful layer of emotion and energy to the song. Here's some more about Scarlet and her role in "Hurricane": Discovery: Dylan famously "discovered" Scarlet while driving around New York City one day. He stopped his limousine when he saw her walking with her violin case and invited her to his rehearsal studio. After hearing her play, he knew she was perfect for the song. Unique Sound: Scarlet's playing on "Hurricane" is characterized by its soaring improvisations, gritty electric violin tone, and use of minor pentatonic and blues scales. This unique style perfectly complements the raw emotion and intensity of Dylan's vocals. Beyond Hurricane: Though best known for "Hurricane," Scarlet went on to collaborate with Dylan on his studio album "Desire" and played a significant role in his Rolling Thunder Revue tour. She has also enjoyed a successful solo career and continues to perform and inspire with her distinctive musical voice.

This story is true. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was thrown in jail under false charges and when he got out 19 years later, they gave him an honorary Middleweight Belt, but I am sure Carter would have wanted the real thing. Bob is an amazing song writer, and an amazing voice. He won the academy award for his song "Things Have Changed" but being the man he is, he had to accept via live TV from his concert having just played the song live.

I had the same reaction when i heard this song for the first time in 1976. I still have the same reactions when i hear the Dylan´s songs. I think he is the greatest songwriter. More than greatest songwriter, he is a wonderful storyteller and a amazing poet. He is a genius

he said "we want to pin this triple murder on him." The song shed light on the injustice-many folks became involved-Rubin Carter was eventually cleared. Good reaction vid, Shon.

Rubin Carter was never cleared. His conviction was overturned on a procedural matter, but it was not overturned with prejudice, meaning that he could have been retried on the same charges. He was never found to have been innocent, or to have been framed, or a lot of other untrue things that some people like to claim. Because of the amount of time that had passed since the murders and Carter’s first trial, the state chose not to try him again. Some witnesses were dead, and the memories of those who were still alive would be questionable after a couple of decades; and even if he had been retried and found guilty again, he would have been eligible for parole very soon because of the amount of time he had already served. So, the state simply chose not to retry him.

very nice reaction video. I like when people have no clue. I guess you know about Rubin Hurricane Carter now. It´s just great the way Dylan can tell a story. The rhymes. His voice

He earned the n-word pass. He was extremely bold for his time to even write the song about these racial injustices, let alone the fact that he is white. For anyone calling him out to the n-word in the song, literally this song is him protesting about the unfair treatment of black people and his song is showing the sentiment at the time.

Dylan decided to play a set at this tribute concert for the producer John Hammond who signed him to his first recording contract. Dylan and the band flew from NYC to Chicago at night rehearsing on the plane, were driven right to the concert and played. That's why he looks like he just woke up.
